Hockey pitch work to start in the summer
THE CATHOLIC HIGH school has made a substantial leap towards the development of the all-weather, flood-lit synthetic sports pitch. Planning permission was secured last year for a ‘hockey’ specification as this gives the greatest flexibility in terms of the range of sports that can be played on the pitch. Careful financial planning has put the school in a position where it can now go out to tender with the intention of building the pitch during the summer. There is still much work to do behind the scenes and fundraising continues. The first fund-raising event will be the first ever Comedy Night on Friday, 11th March. This will be strictly for over-18s and will be hosted by professional comedian Tony Vino. Tickets are available now for £10 from the school finance office. Tables of up to 10 are available—and the bar will be open! 01244 981609
Big summer bike ride
A fund raising 200 mile cycle ride is taking place this July – the Broken Spoke Sportive. It will be limited to only 75 cyclists who will depart Chester on Saturday 2nd July and follow a route through North Wales before crossing the border and ending day one in Ironbridge. Day two will see the group depart and loop back through East Cheshire before arriving back in Chester, two days and 200 miles later - over 6 stages. Fully supported, all meals, bespoke Jersey and accommodation for a minimum donation of £222). For more information and to enter please visit: www.christofidelis.org.uk/Fund-Raising
Hoops team win three out of four
It was a successful season for the Year 10 / 11 basketball team who beat Blacon 46-41, Bishops Bluecoat 59-18 and Christleton 37-35 with their only blemish a close 31-33 defeat to King’s. Well done to the squad: Connor Davies, Craig Chisholm, Kaan Uzunali, Connor Gentile, Etienne Deans-Louis and Adil Haque.
Students hit the slopes
Launched in December, the Catholic High School Ski Club saw 38 students from Year 7 through to Year 12 take to the piste for the first time. They all showed great resilience and determination to improve with a smile on their face and some of them managed to make it to the top of the nursery slope. With growing numbers and now a regular half term fixture, a larger group including those more experienced, made the journey to Manchester 6 To advertise call 350398

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Handbridge, Curzon Park, Westminster Park &
Hough Green areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Fund-raising’s just a walk in the park! The Westminster Park Health Walking Club handed over a cheque for £112 to Angela Spruce, of the Stroke Association, for money raised from a recent raffle. The picture was taken outside Westminster Park Café where the group meets every Tuesday at 10am. Health walks are aimed at people who are generally retired, offering the chance to be more active, get out into the fresh air and make more friends. They are ideal for those who want to start exercising in a gentle and safe way. There are normally around 35 from a membership of 60 who go on walks up to four miles, although short cuts are available for those who cannot walk the whole distance. On the last Thursday of the month, the group goes further afield with walks further out in Cheshire, on the Wirral, Shropshire and North Wales. If you wish to enjoy good company with a little exercise the please join the club. You will be made very welcome. Call Mike on 680328 or Fred on 675085.

Poulton & Pulford play area gets a cash bonus THE residents of Poulton, Cuckoo’s Nest and Pulford are set to get an improved recreation area thanks largely to a £50,000 grant from funding body WREN. The money, awarded by WREN’s FCC Community Action Fund, will be used to buy playing equipment, seating and landscaping for the old school playing field in Pulford. Councillor Jean Ewins of Poulton & Pulford Parish Council believes the facility will make a huge difference to the lives of people living in the area. She says “This project will provide a real boost to the people of Poulton and Pulford. It is fantastic that WREN has awarded us this money and we are really looking forward to our new recreation area taking shape over the course of this year. WREN is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community, biodiversity and heritage projects from funds donated by FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund. Jean Ewins hopes the project will be ready to use by the end of this summer and would like to acknowledge the huge amount of local support including offers of financial and practical help. Duke’s Drive’s noticeboard takes pride of place VISITORS to the Duke’s Drive can stay up to date with news and forthcoming events, thanks to an eye-catching new noticeboard. Duke’s Drive, which is popular with walkers, runners and bird spotters, was originally a carriage drive to the Duke of Westminster’s Eaton Hall estate. Instead of purchasing a generic noticeboard, Rangers in the council’s greenspaces team asked Paul Noon, of Blacon Adventure Playground, to create a bespoke hand-carved wooden noticeboard. Paul used to live in the Lodge House on the Duke’s Drive and has previously created a selection of wooden carvings for the route through the woodland, which visitors have enjoyed for many years. The materials for the new noticeboard were funded by local ward members Councillors Neil Sullivan and Razia Daniels. Local ward member, Councillor Razia Daniels said: “The finished noticeboard looks truly wonderful. Paul Noon already has a strong connection to this site, so this is a great way to keep a little bit of his spirit and soul within Duke’s Drive.” Chair of the Friends of Duke’s Drive, Conor O’Gorman added: “We are really grateful to Paul for giving his skills and time free of charge to create this beautiful, functional piece of art Evening denture for us.” repair service More information about the Friends of Duke’s Cracked or broken dentures repaired Drive can be found at their website – www. the same night or next day friendsofdukesdrive.org. QUEEN'S PARK H Rowers get busy on dry land
Conservation conversation Students from Year 7 visited Chester Zoo on Curriculum Enrichment Day and were asked to think and focus on ‘conservation’. Zookeepers explained some animals at Chester are tended to and looked after in order to preserve them. This is with the vision that animals, who are extinct in the wild, will one day be reintroduced back into their natural habitat.

Lots still happen during the winter at the rowing club, while it may be cold, windy and wet – hard work during the winter period pays off in the summer. The focus turns to long steady state sessions on the water, rowing machines and fitness training. The heavy rain and wind has made it difficult to get out on the water, so training sessions have been on land doing ergos, circuits, runs and core strength work. Rona Fishburn and Emily Cox attended a training day at The Grange School Boat Club for high performing athletes, where they rowed with mixed crews from all over the Northwest; they were also coached and tested throughout the day. Capsize and recovery training at the City Baths for the Year 7 and Year 8 rowers – this is where they put into practice what they should do if they capsize their boat. They are taught how to upright it and get back in. Other activities included a 50m swim test, four minutes treading water and practice using a throw line to rescue someone.

K HIGH SCHOOL The Diamond Jubilee Horror show worthy of the West End!
There has been some great feedback from the school’s long-awaited school show – the Little Shop of Horrors – performed in February. Since September over 110 students spanning Year 7 – 13 have been involved in intensive rehearsals for their big show which culminated in five performances. Matt Yeoman, director of learning for the visual and performing arts, said: “The challenge each year is to produce a show that broadens our students’ experience of musical theatre – a show that both challenges and raises the bar from the previous year. While Little Shop is performed in a ‘Sci-Fi B movie’ style, this has presented a real challenge to all of our students who have had to develop a real flair for melodramatic acting – a challenge they have all risen to and succeeded in meeting.” Reviews have been extremely positive with it being described as ‘amazing’ and feeling like a West End production!

ON THE BEAT with Police Community Support Officer Chris Fox
DOOR-TO-DOOR WARNING RESIDENTS around Handbridge Park have mentioned to me again this week about a group of males going door to door trying to sell household items. The males claim they are ex-offenders and have been sent by the Probation service. The Probation service would not send exoffenders door to door in this way and if you get people knocking on your door trying to sell items my advice would be to advice that the local Police have advised not to buy items in this way. Door to door sellers should have a pedlar’s licence issued by the Police. If you are concerned about people knocking on your door or receive abuse from any door to door sellers please call 101 and we will look to send a patrol out to speak with those involved. Bicycle thefts Bradford Street, Handbridge – An unlocked bicycle was stolen from a back yard. Queens Park High School – A thief cut the lock off a bike and stole it. West Cheshire College, Eaton Road – The lock was cut off a bicycle attached to a bike rack.
House burglary Eaton Road - A glass panel in back door was cut to gain entry and expensive items of jewellery were taken. Enquires are ongoing on the above incidents. Please be vigilant particularly in the Handbridge area as it is clear there has been at least one individual looking to commit thefts and burglaries. Cannabis There has also been a slight increase in reports of youths smoking cannabis in the area. If you witness youths smoking cannabis or any signs of drugs in the local area please help us attend and put a stop to this by calling 101.
Please call 101 if you have any issues to report. Also my e mail address is Christopher.fox@cheshire.pnn.police.uk. Please remember if you have any issues the Police and the local councilors hold the following Surgeries on the first Saturday of every month: Chester Street, Saltney – 9am-10.15am Westminster Park Shops – 10.30am – 11.45am Handbridge – Dee Bridge - Opposite the Ship Inn – 12noon-1pm. If you see one of us out and about stop and have a chat

Hayley’s health and fitness
HEALTH AND FITNESS BLOG
HOW COMMITTED ARE YOU? How committed are you? Do you really push yourself or is your mind set holding you back? Take this little quiz to find out if your super fit or how you could do more! 1. On average how many nights a week are you active? I’m active In my job I dont need to exercise (0 points) 1-2 nights (1 point) 2-3 nights (2 points) 4 + nights (3 points) 2. Food preparation and eating I skip meals and eat an evening meal (0 points) I eat as and when I can (1 point) I eat healthily in the day and reward myself at nights (2 points) I eat healthily all week and reward myself with 1 cheat meal per week (3 points) 3. At classes I would say ... I only attend when I have a friend to come with me (0 points) I push myself only when I have the energy (1 point) I am getting better as I get fitter (2 points) I push myself to the max (3 points) 4. The following reasons are a good enough reason to not attend my fitness group I have had a stressful day (0 points) The weather is awful its cold and miserable (0 points) Husband was running late I’ll be late (0 points) I have a cold (0 point) I have an injury (1 point) Family emergency (2 points) 5. My fitness attire... I will spend £5-10 on fitness gear (0 points) I’m not wasting money on decent trainers they all work the same (0 points) I will buy the latest trend if they are worth having (2 points) I will wait for recommendations and research what I need before I buy (3 points) 6. If I miss a class I will... Miss the rest of the week and start fresh next week (0 points) It wasn’t my fault my friend couldnt come I’ll start again when she does (0 points) I’ll make up for it by doing 20 mins at home (1 point) I’ll do what I can at home and attend other classes this week to make up for lost times (2 points) I never miss a class its my routine now (3 points)
If you scored 0-6 points Skipping meals and classes at any given opportunity is a no brainer that you wont get to where you want to be fast. Your mind set really needs to change, if the weather bad and you dont feel like it, its about getting that get up and go no matter what you state of mind. Use family and friends to push you and only use one weekend day as a treat day. Skipping meals especially breakfast causes low blood sugars, you crave rubbish foods in the day and you end up eating more throughout. Plan meals and make large batches on Sundays to freeze and store for the week. Your activity needs to be upped to at least the recommended daily time, with the right footwear and clothing. Being busy in your job doesnt mean you’re giving your heart a work out and exercising helps elminate stress, no excuses! Get on BOOGIE BOUNCE with me to really obviate stress factors. If you scored 6-12 points It sounds like your half way there but little things can sway your motivation. You like to buy the gear to show willing but too often a bad day or a small factor can throw off your routine. Set a target of where you want to be and set realistic goals of how to achieve this. Push yourself that bit further to get to obtain good results and ensure you have a willing and encouraging work out buddy to keep you on track. Personal training would be of you to you as this would give you the extra push you require and break bad haibts. You scored 12 + points WOW you’re a super committed and a fitness lover, you strive to stick to commit and you keep on track no matter what the weather or circumstances. You only buy decent equipment and clothing as its essential to look after yourself with support and good footwear. You dont rely on a friend to motivate you as you will attend your training based on your own motivation and determination. Food is there for fuel only and week days are for looking after your body inside and out, treats are minimal but your hardwork pays off as overall health and your appearance is fit and flourishing! To push yourself further you would need to try new things and shock your body, eg if your a zumba lover, bring weights and add that extra push to your body. Or if your a runner, try using inclines to max yoruself out! One off personal training sessions to show you where you could improve would also be of use. GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
EARLY SPRING MAGIC
MARCH is when spring comes to life with unstoppable new growth, usually offset with gales and frost to damage new shoots but there is always colour or scent to enjoy. March is the best month for daffodils with some many varieties to choose from. I enjoy visiting Dunham Massey winter gardens to see many varieties en masse and took this photo of Narcissus Jenny with larger yellow daffodils behind them. Daffodils are good under deciduous trees or in full sun. Another more unusual bulb out in March is the Erythronium or Dog’s Tooth Violet. More fussy than daffodils, they like light shade and the moisture retentive yet well drained soil that some of find so difficult to achieve! However, if planted around deciduous shrubs and left alone they will give lovely leaves with elegant flowers. Erythronium tuolomense has buttercup yellow flowers or try varieties like Pagoda with pale yel-low blooms or White Beauty with white flowers. Before many of the perennials pop up, shrubs start to get going. Ribes or flowering currant usually is in flower before Forsythia and is very tough. It survives in cold windswept gardens but does best in a more sheltered spot in sun or part shade. The combination of Ribes and Pieris looks stunning for early spring colour. Pieris prefers a slightly acid to neutral soil with some shelter but the combination of white flowers and red or yellow new growth brings life to the garden. If it is scent that you look for try Daphnes. Daphne odora is a rounded evergreen shrub up to 1m high with pink starry highly scented flowers in early spring. Grow somewhere sheltered and where you can smell the fragrance. Another good one is Daphne bholua which is taller, semi evergreen but with the same winter fragrance. Well drained soil that does not dry out is best. Finish tidying the dead growth from last year to allow perennials and grasses to get going. Plant seeds of tomatoes, chillies and cucumbers and keep in a warm place such as windowsill or heated propagator. Ensure that you have completed the pruning of roses and cut back winter flowering heathers when they have finished flowering.
