You can read more in this edition. We also have news of a campaign to save the run-down phone box on Overleigh Road, details of a new watersports hub on the Meadows, academy status for Queen’s Park High School, clubs news, gardening and health and beauty as well as a legal column with Bartletts.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Handbridge, Curzon Park, Westminster Park &
Hough Green areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Handbridge litter pickers make bags of difference The sun shone for Handbridge residents as they grabbed their gloves and worked together to transform their community. A total of 24 volunteers took part in the community litter pick, organised by the Handbridge Community Association and involving local people of all ages who wanted to make a difference in their neighbourhood. And what a difference: 30 bags of rubbish were collected, including household waste, carpets, hubcaps and washing baskets. From 10am, volunteers gathered at the community notice board to receive their high visibility jackets, litter ‘grabber’ and green bags, all provided by Cheshire West and Cheshire Streetscene team. In groups of two or three they were directed towards areas of Handbridge where litter was most problematic; particularly around the arches, Edgars Field and in the corner gardens on Allington and Prenton Place. A drinks point was provided to offer refreshments to the workers, kindly hosted by Joan Walker on the Saturday and Julie Rowland on the Sunday. All involved felt that it was a very positive step, with passers by stopping to thank the volunteers and comment on how much of a difference it makes to areas that were an eyesore due to littering and fly tipping. HCA Chair Linda Long said: “It is wonderful that so many members of our community came to help this weekend; I hope it shows that the HCA isn’t just about fundraising and events, we take great pride in our area and hope to encourage others to do the same. I’d like to say a huge thank you to all involved! Together we can achieve great things and I believe this weekend is just the start.” Due to the positive response the HCA are now looking to complete a quarterly litter pick in order to keep Handbridge looking sparkling. Anyone interested in joining in should look for dates on our Facebook page or the community notice board on Appleyards Lane.

Wrexham Road plans ‘still not meeting needs of local people’ PEOPLE living in Westminster Park are less than happy about the impact of a big new housing estate on the area. Cheshire West and Chester Council has earmarked land off Wrexham Road for 1,300 new homes. But Westminster Park Residents’ Association fears that there will be a big increase in traffic and that the proposals by the NHS West Cheshire Commissioning Group for a new health hub could involve the relocation of local GP services in Lache and Handbridge. A so-called development brief is under consideration by the council. This will form the basis of the plans going forward, so if people have any concerns, now is the time to air them. “There are currently no buses linking Lache and Handbridge with the Wrexham Road,” said Brian Westcott of the Westminster Park Residents’ Association, “so how are people going to get to the new surgery? They will either have to drive - if they have access to a car, get a taxi – more traffic, or walk or cycle. The distance from these areas to the surgery will be nearly two miles – is this realistic?” “I can’t see how this is going to address the health inequalities in our society. If we make it difficult for the residents of Lache and Handbridge to get to a surgery, they are going to be less inclined to go which will be detrimental to their health,” he added. “Local services should meet the needs of local people.” The Association is also concerned that the plans for education could result in increased traffic

as well as large building costs and disruption to children’s education while they are placed in existing schools on a temporary basis. Although they welcomed an amendment in the brief which removed the statement that a school would not be built until the 700th house was constructed, they are still worried about the timing. “We are keen to see a new school developed at an early stage to avoid even greater congestion on our roads,” said Brian Westcott. “Until the school is built, children will have to be accommodated in other local schools, which will cause them to be overcrowded. Some children will be able to walk or cycle to school, but it is inevitable that a lot of parents will opt to drive their children to school – yet more journeys on this busy route.” Another area of concern is the lack of accommodation for the growing elderly population. The association would like to see a commitment to bungalows or supported living accommodation. “Many of the residents of Westminster Park are of a mature age, and bungalows on our estate are quickly snapped up at premium prices. The need has been stressed at the public meetings we have held. It seems short-sighted of the developers not to identify this marketing opportunity,” said Brian Westcott. “There is a ready-made market on the doorstep if they provided the right type of housing,” he added, “but at present they seem to think we should all be happy to install stair lifts. What most older people would prefer would be single storey accommodation such as bungalows.”

Campaign to save Handbridge phone box
SINCE we all started using mobile devices, few of us have to make calls from a traditional phone box. Many of the iconic red BT phone boxes have fallen into disrepair – and nowhere is this more evident than on Overleigh Road, near St Mary’s Church, where the faded red paint and rusted metal makes for a rather sorry sight. As a result BT have launched the Adopt a Kiosk scheme where communities across the country can adopt their local phone box and convert them into mobile libraries, defibrillator containers or miniature coffee shops among others. In Handbridge, local resident Charlotte Jobse is launching a campaign to save the kiosk after learning that BT will be removing it next year. Charlotte said: “We can save it by everyone contacting the planning officer at Chester and Cheshire west council and objecting. We then must have someone from the parish council or a member from a registered charity to apply to adopt it for £1 and then Handbridge community will own and be responsible for its upkeep and do with it what they want. “We must spread the word to save this iconic representation of everything British. It’s an asset to the village and I’m sure if the community knew about it they would want to save it.” A BT spokesman said “The growth of the mobile phone industry has inevitably meant phone box usage has dropped dramatically, and nearly half of the phone boxes in the UK have been removed, but there are still around 8,000 red phone boxes which can be adopted. “We’re giving communities the opportunity to get back in touch with their local phone box, to make them once again an asset that local people can enjoy. “And that doesn’t mean you have to make phone calls from them.” To find out more about the Adopt a Kiosk scheme, visit https://business.bt.com/solutions/ small-business/communities/adopt-a-kiosk/

ELECTROLYSIS HAIR REMOVAL Skincare advice with Jane Bryant, from the Hough Green Clinic
I am often asked why at Hough Green Clinic we still offer hair removal by Electrolysis when we have the latest all singing all dancing laser hair removal machine Nordlys by Ellipse.
grey, white, blonde or very light red hair. We can treat light to medium Asian skins, but not dark skins. Certain medications make the skin sun sensitive and are therefore not suited to laser treatment.
The answer is quite simply that despite our Nordlys being the perfect choice for superfluous hair treatment there are still situations when the Nordlys by Ellipse is basically stumped. As treatment with laser relies on pigment in the hair, it cannot treat
The end result whether you have Electrolysis or Laser treatment is the same. Either treatment is aiming at the root of the hair in the growing phase. In both treatments the hair root is heated and destroyed rendering the follicle in which the hair grows redundant.

Treatment by Electrolysis introduces a very fine gold plated needle into the hair follicle via a hand held Electrolysis pen. The hair root bulb is treated by short wave diathermy. All hair colours and skin types can be treated by Electrolysis and there is no restriction to sun sensitive medication. Both treatments work equally well. The main difference is that with Electrolysis only one hair is treated at a time making the length of treatments quite long. Whereas with laser many hairs can be treated in one shot and so the treatments are very short. I have 34 years of Electrolysis experience and 11 years of laser treatments and find both treatments compliment each other well. If a client has a mixture of grey and
dark hair colour we start by treating the dark hair with laser and then treat the remaining grey hairs with Electrolysis. Samantha has 10 years experience of both Electrolysis and laser. She is also qualified as an Advanced Electrologist to treat skin tags, milia, Campbell de Morgan cherry spots, seborrhoeic warts, common warts, verrucae and many other skin imperfections. Treatments for Electrolysis hair removal start at ÂŁ22 for 15 minutes treatment. Jane Bryant, Advanced Skin Health Specialist, Hough Green Clinic Tel: 01244 680414

Jail for cyclist who attacked elderly man A cyclist who assaulted a partially blind pensioner has been jailed. Timothy Walpole, of Clover Lane, Lache, pleaded guilty to the unprovoked assault on an 80-yearold man at Chester Crown Court. The court was told how in September last year Walpole was cycling along Hamilton Place in Chester when he collided with the victim. After a few heated words, the two men moved on but as the victim was walking down Crook Street and into an alleyway, Walpole, aged 63, approached him. As the elderly man turned away to leave, Walpole assaulted him, causing the victim to hit the floor. The assault left him with cuts and bruises to his face and body as well as an injury to his eye. The court heard how a number of people saw Walpole attack the man with one witnessing an angry confrontation before he raised his arm to strike the victim with a green bag and cycled away. Det Const Stephen Owens, of Chester Local Policing Unit, said: “This was an unprovoked attack on a vulnerable man who was left injured but also badly shaken by what happened to him. “Walpole put fear into a defenceless elderly man who was simply going about his daily business and showed no regard for the distress his actions would have caused. “I can only hope, knowing Walpole is now being punished for his crime, it allows the victim to come to terms with the attack and to try and move forward.” Hand of Bridge Club A friendly group, playing Bridge socially on Thursday morning. New watersports hub on the Meadows COUNCIL planners have given the go-ahead for the Queen’s Park High School Rowing Club building to be demolished to make way for a £2.5million watersports hub. The move will bring together three canoeing clubs, Queen’s Park High School Rowing Club and Royal Chester Rowing Club whose building on the opposite bank is too small. There were a number of concerns raised by people living in Queen’s Park, regarding the extra noise and traffic as well as the encroachment of the building and 46-space car park on the Meadows. But councillors took the view that the building on was no longer fit for purpose and that a new modern facility would help to promote rowing and canoeing on the Dee for many years to come. Lache fun day There will be a fun day and car boot sale on Saturday 13th May 9.30am-1pm, at St Clare’s Church Downsfield Road, Lache. Includes tombola, children’s competition, bouncy castle, music, raffle and refreshments. £5 per car or table. Contact Steve Bonsall on 671817 or email stevebonsall@outlook.com. Beer festival date Chester Rugby Club is the venue for the 29th Chester Charity Beer Festival from 18th-20th May. There will be over 140 real ales, ciders, perries and wines, a pop-up restaurant run by Hickory’s Smokehouse, plus live entertainment. All proceeds go to charity, with over £200,000 raised over previous years. Visit www.chesterbeerfestival. co.uk for more info.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
MARVELLOUS MONTH OF MAY In my garden in a north facing area and in full sun There are many shrubs and trees that give spring colour and this month I recommend some colourful additions to the garden. Starting with Crab Apple or Malus trees. These can be bought on dwarfing rootstocks and will be suitable for small gardens. The varieties Malus Royalty or Profusion have deep pink flowers and dark purple foliage as shown in the photo although the crab apples are tiny. Easy to grow in sun or part shade on loamy to heavy soils. For those with lighter soils and sheltered positions then maybe think about a Ceanothus with rich blue or sometimes white and pink flowers. They can be small or tree sized so check how large it will grow. They often have evergreen foliage but be warned, they have a limited lifespan so after 10 years yours may lose branches, die back and look scraggly. Acid soils will favour Azaleas and Rhododendrons which generally flower in May. So many types to choose from with small Azaleas suitable for pots to huge tree like Rhododendrons. Best in slightly shady spot and acidic, moisture retentive well drained soil. Love it in semi shade under mature trees.
Perennials out in May include the very delicate Dicentra formosa with grey green feathery foliage and little dangling white, pink or red flowers. Very good for woodland as the foliage lasts a long time. Aquilegias or Grannies Bonnet flower in May and will self seed easily if you leave the flower heads to dry out. Jobs to do in the garden in May include planting out your hardened off courgette, tomatoes, and bean seedlings. I also plant seeds of Early Purple Sprouting Broccoli in May for succulent stems of broccoli the next year. Prune back any shrubs that have finished flowering such as Ribes, Pieris and Forsythia. If you would like to visit gardens for ideas, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Tirley Garth, Willington near Tarporley is open on 7th, 14th and 21st May with over 3000 Rhododenrons and Azaleas in the garden. All Fours Farm Aston by Budworth near Nothwich is open on 1st and 28th May if you like traditional country gardens with flowering plants, vegetable garden and pond.

Students returning from the Easter Holidays were actually coming to a ‘new school’ – albeit with the same name! Queen’s Park is now an academy within the Christleton Learning Trust. Head teacher Lynsey Watterson (pictured) said: “As part of the conversion, the Trust successfully bid for an Environmental Improvement Grant which will enable us to carry out some light refurbishment works over the coming weeks, hopefully impacting upon the appearance and feel of the school as we start our new chapter!”
