Westminster Park residents fight on to save their green space People living in Westminster Park have been dismayed once more by new notices attached to lamp-posts informing them that Dee Valley Water have applied to the Department of Transport to change the use of the green space on Fir Tree Avenue enabling them to build a new water pumping station. Local resident Steve Barnwell said: “Green spaces on the Westminster Park estate were designed as public amenities not to be built on in the future. Land registry documents for 1969 show that this land was ‘dedicated to the public for ever’, and yet Dee Valley Water want to ride roughshod over these orders.” Dee Valley Water have applied to the Department of Transport for a highways stopping-up order which will in effect change the ownership and purpose of this open green space. Currently it is owned by Kier Group and is designated as highway with public access.
Steve is also very disappointed by the response of Cheshire West and Chester Council to the planning application submitted by Dee Valley Water. “This green space is designated in CWAC’s Local Plan as an important part of the ‘Green Network’ in Chester. The urban corridor along the A483 Wrexham Road into Chester should have a green buffer along its length,” he said. He is also concerned that this will set a precedent for future building: “Quite apart from the noise and vibration that we are going to suffer, and the loss of an important local amenity, if the construction of this pumping station is allowed to go ahead, what is to stop another developer or utility company from building in the green buffer zone?” The plans are currently with Cheshire West and Chester Council awaiting approval.
Police and pupils engage in the cage Police took the Panna football cage into Catholic High School recently. The idea was for the PCSO and police to meet with pupils during the school lunch hour to break down barriers.

More patrols to keep a lid on WP vandalism
l The Trucam speed gun was deployed on Lache Lane recently with 21 vehicles found to be over the 30mph limit. Concerns have also been raised about speeding on Circular Drive and St Mark’s Road.
Officers have stepped up patrols in Westminster Park and engaged with young people following complaints of vandalism. l More high visibility patrols were carried out on the Meadows with the police and council wardens. Drug paraphernalia found on the fields suggest that drug users have been in the area. This has been reported to the council for removal and further patrols will be conducted over the coming weeks. l During the last couple of weeks a number of local residents have raised concerns regarding drug use&inChester Council Cheshire West Overleigh Cemetery. GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
FLAMING NOVEMBER COLOUR With the flowers coming to an end for the year, it is time to appreciate the leaves changing colour to yellow, orange and red and berries on shrubs. In sheltered areas where Acers can thrive in cool damp soil, their leaf colour can be stunning in autumn. I have an Acer palmatum Orange Dream, in a pot. In spring the foliage is lime green but in autumn the leaves are edged with orange red than gradually deepen over the days. If you have space for a large tree in the garden and want autumn colour then try a Liquidamber. Some are huge trees but Liquidamber orientalis will grow slowly to 6m tall with yellow and orange foliage in autumn. Plant well away from buildings, at least the ultimate height away, to prevent tree root damage to structures. Last month I suggested a striking grass, Miscanthus sinensis Flamingo for autumn colour. As the weather cools, this grass takes on orange reddish hues as can be seen from the photo. Berries do well at keeping colour going on into winter and this year is superb. Look around as you walk to the shops and you are likely to see gleaming Pyracantha shrubs loaded with berries

in red, orange and yellow. Another desirable plant is Callicarpa or Beauty Berry. The variety Profusion is best for berries which are clusters of purple dotted up the stems. Needs a moisture retentive soil in sun or light shade and berries best after a hot summer. This year Berberis are berrying well with clusters of scarlet berries which make a stunning contrast on the purple leaved varieties. As leaves fall, and if you have space for a leaf compost heap, clear them up and put them in their own heap or damp into plastic bin liners, preferably with grass cuttings to help them rot down. Leaves and grass make the most delicious compost (from the plants point of view!) which is usually weed free. Dig out any vegetables that have finished for the season and add a layer, 3ins deep, of well rotted manure onto the top of the bed to be taken down into the soil over winter. Make sure you have cleared all leaves from around roses and cut off any that show signs of disease. These spore based moulds stay in the soil ready to emerge in the next season so keeping the area clear is important. Finally, plant tulip bulbs, your last chance for a display next year!

School shares its ideas with the nation Queen’s Park High School has been selected to be showcased in the 2016/17 Parliamentary Review, representing the Education sector in the North. Queen’s Park High School features alongside the Prime Minister and a small number of outstanding schools in a document that looks back on the year in schools and Westminster. The main aim of the Review is to showcase best practice as a learning tool to the public and private sector. The review is sent to over half a million leading policymakers, with the articles acting as both a blueprint for success and a template for reform. Head teacher Lyndsay Watterson said: “We were thrilled to be selected to feature within this year’s Parliamentary Review, showcasing our journey as a school and in particular the importance of visionary leadership.”

TESTIMONIALS
Gardening has always been my passion
Tim is reliable, makes excellent recommendations, sticks to budgets and does great work for me. My garden stayed lovely until much later in the year than usual and I am now looking forward to the spring planting in a couple of weeks. My garden will be a pleasure to behold for most of the year thanks to Tim.
I have been a gardener for as long as I can remember, and sowed my 1st packet of Marigold seeds in my parents’ garden when I was 4 years old. I went straight from School at 18 to study for a degree in Horticulture and graduated 4 years later in 1997 from Wye College, University of London. I worked in several different roles in the horticulture industry after graduating (I’ve also worked in recruitment and art sales), but all along I have always wanted to plant beautiful gardens. I set up Tim Does Gardens in 2016 after studying for a year at Kew Gardens and have been creating beautiful gardens in South West London for the last year. I moved to Chester at the start of July this year and have expanded my practice to include Cheshire and the surrounding area. I specialise in adding plants to your garden to give you the dream garden you have always wanted. My gardens look wonderful in every season, even in Winter!! I am available to give you advice, add a whole planting scheme or a single border if you prefer. Please get in touch and we can discuss your garden. NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME TO BOOK YOUR WINTER TIDY UP.
Tim has been doing my garden for over a year now and I would highly recommend him. He is hard working and does a fantastic job, and he really knows his stuff. Tim is one of the most knowledgeable gardeners I know (had 4 previously). If you need your garden to bloom and look good, then I would highly recommend Tim.
Tim has helped me again in my garden recently with a new planting scheme. I thoroughly recommend using Tim, he has a real passion and knowledge of gardening and garden design. He is head and shoulders above another gardener I used and he has helped me to create a beautiful garden. I really recommend him!

Handbridge Flower Club The Club moved into its new venue in September for our first meeting after the summer break. The Scout Hut, Westminster Park (in Manor Road behind Belgrave School) will be our new home until the Handbridge Community Centre opens next summer. Our demonstrator for the afternoon was Diane Fair, a National demonstrator from Mollington, Her beautiful flowers and masses of unusual foliage transformed the room with her superb interpretation of the theme “Nature’s Bounty”, creating a warm and friendly atmosphere. In October we welcomed back Nantwich demonstrator Ann Gayter, who gave us a floral lesson in “The Language of Flowers”. On 16th November we will have a seasonal demonstration by David Mason from Stockport, depicting “The Twelve Days of Christmas”. Our last event in 2017 is our Christmas Lunch which is booked for 30th November. If you would like to join us for any of our meetings in our new home, you will be very welcome. Admission is £5 for ordinary meetings and £6 for the Christmas demonstration. Call 01244 683715 Chester Globetrotters Saturday 18th November, from 1pm, at the Grosvenor Museum, with talks ‘Tatting around Japan’ by Brenda Rewhorn and ‘Antarctica – Celebrating Shackleton’ by Roy Willis. Scullers go the distance QPHS Rowing Club didn’t have to travel far for their first head race of the new season, as it was on the River Dee. The event, Chester Long Distance Sculls was a timed race over 5000m from Eccleston to the Meadows. Year 11s Zara and Kiera continued their success with their first win at J16 in this race. Congratulations also to Henry and Morgan W, in Year 12, for their first win in their J17 double and to Harrison, in Year 12, and Gwilym, in Year 11, who rowed with two boys from Northwich rowing club to take third overall fastest quad.
Boxes filled for Operation Christmas Child QPHS will once again be supporting Operation Christmas Child this November. A total of 48 Christmas Boxes for all ages were donated last year by students, with many of them coming from Year 7 and 8 students. It is hoped that every pupil can donate one box by including second hand toys, arts & crafts and a cuddly toy to children in the UK and around the world who will not be receiving any Christmas presents due to being homeless, refugees or in a war
