ON THE BEAT with Police Community Support Officer Chris Fox
Take care when on the school run As the schools have returned officers have been trying to attend schools as often as possible at drop off and pick up times to deal with safe and illegal parking around the Schools. Please ensure that you are parking in a safe, considerate and legal manner around schools. Poor parking around schools can increase the chances of a child being involved in a road traffic accident around a school, which I am sure is the last thing anyone would like to see happen. I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage residents to report any information to the Police on any criminal behaviour they feel is affecting their local communities. This could be information on drugs or thefts in your local area. Information from local residents is vital to us in helping us tackle issues that are having a detrimental effect on local communities. Please rest assured that any information passed will be kept anonymous. Information can be passed via 101 the Police non-emergency number, by phoning Crimestoppers on 0800555111 or by e mailing myself on the above address.
The following crimes have been reported in this area recently: l A car was scraped with a key at the Asda Car Park, River Lane, Saltney l An unlocked garage was broken into at Earlsway, Curzon Park. l A kitchen window was removed in a burglary at Hough Green. l A clay ornament was stolen from a driveway in Hough Green l Numerous items were stolen from a shed in Allington Place, Handbridge. l A kitchen sink was taken from outside a house in Elizabeth Crescent, Queen’s Park. l Police are asking people to ensure that your doors to your house, garage, shed and vehicles are locked. Also make sure that any valuable items are locked away in secure locations with heavy duty locks. Once everything is locked away in secure locations ensure that no valuables are on display. It is evident that a thief has been active around Handbridge Park over the last month.
Please call 101 if you have any issues to report. Also my e mail address is Christopher.fox@cheshire.pnn.police.uk. Please remember if you have any issues the Police and the local councilors hold the following Surgeries on the first Saturday of every month: Chester Street, Saltney – 9am-10.15am Westminster Park Shops – 10.30am – 11.45am Handbridge – Dee Bridge - Opposite the Ship Inn – 12noon-1pm. Poulton park gets a facelift
An improved recreation ground has been officially opened at the Poulton and Pulford Community Park. The park improvements have been largely funded by a £50,000 grant from WREN’S FCC Community Action Fund, along with a number of further grants and donations including: The Westminster Foundation, Sanctuary Housing Trust, The Grosvenor Pulford Hotel and the Sir Donald and Lady Edna Wilson Trust. The money raised has been used to buy new play equipment, seating and landscaping for the old playing field in Pulford. The final development stage of the park will take place this autumn when the spring bulbs and trees will be planted. Aldford hosts national hedgelaying championships Aldford Hall Farm, Aldford, is the venue for the National Hedgelaying Society Championships on Saturday 22nd October. The day-long event is the annual hedgecutting day, showing many styles and the skilled use of tools in the ancient art. Visitors welcome.
Lord Mayor’s annual Dee inspection
The annual inspection of the River Dee has been carried out by the Lord Mayor of Chester, Cllr Angela Claydon, who is also Admiral of the Dee. The title dates back to 1354 when admiralty powers were granted to the mayor by the Black Prince and an annual inspection is undertaken so that any issues can be addressed. When on the river, the Admiral of the Dee is accompanied by a miniature silver oar which was presented in the 17th century and is called the Water Bailiff’s Oar. There are only 21 Lord Mayors in England and the Chester title of Admiral of the Dee is unique. The Lord Mayor said: “It was a great honour to invoke the title of Admiral of the Dee with dates back to the middle of the 1300’s. Chester at that time was second only to the River Thames as a busy port. The title of Admiral of the Dee was bestowed on the mayor because the Black Prince was Earl of Chester, and this was one way for the King to increase income paid as duty and taxes from river users. I am proud to continue the tradition and bear the ancient title of Admiral of the Dee on behalf of the City of Chester” The Lord Mayor was accompanied by the Lady Mayoress, Mrs Sally Burgess, and her family. Also in attendance was Rebecca Archer, representing the Sea Cadets, and members of the Environmental team from Cheshire West and Chester Council, who carried out the formal inspection of the river. l The Lord Mayor of Chester, Cllr Angela Claydon, carries out the inspection of the River Dee with Rebecca Archer, from the Sea Cadets, and Lady Mayoress, Sally Burgess 10 To advertise call 350398

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Handbridge, Curzon Park, Westminster Park &
Hough Green areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Selling in the Autumn months
The Diamond Jubilee
MANY house hunters active at this time of year are hoping to be in their new home by Christmas so it’s important to get your sale or purchase agreed by mid-October if this is to be achieved. For anyone wanting to move house over the next few months here are a few simple tips which can help you get going!
BUYING TIPS: If you want to agree a purchase at this time of year and move in by Christmas it’s important to have all your financial arrangements in place and to instruct a solicitor who will work quickly and efficiently. Be sure to check with the seller or agent about the home owner’s onward plans. If you get embroiled in a long chain there can often be delays which are out of your control. Book removal companies early. November and December are a busy time of year and many firms get booked up quickly.
SELLING TIPS: As the weather starts to change, gardens will begin to fade from their summer glory and you will need to cutback the hedging, dead-head flowers and sweep up leaves. The weather can be unpredictable so make sure you have a foot-mat for people to wipe their feet on if it’s raining or over-shoes to wear on light coloured carpets. An umbrella is always handy for showing the garden when it’s wet. If it’s a little chilly, get some background heating on or light a small fire. Warm and cosy rooms are very welcoming when it’s blustery outside. Use lamps on darker days to brighten up a room and even have some chilled background music to create the right feel.
If you are thinking of buying or selling over the next couple of months please feel free to contact Somerville’s Estate Agents with any questions or to Roundabout request a valuation. Overleigh October 2016

QUEEN'S PARK H
Speed king Jack is right on track
Sporty Dan wins award Congratulations to Year 13 student Daniel Depuis who received the coveted Michael Ord Award this year at Queen’s Park High School for his outstanding attitude towards his BTEC studies and continued support with the PE department. Dan has also given up hours of his own time to help coach the school’s Year 7 football team. Dan was presented with the prestigious award by Stuart Ord at the end of last term. Leader of learning for the recreational arts, Mr Clubb, said: “I am really proud of Dan’s achievements. He is an extremely worthy recipient for this very special award.” The Michael Ord Award is a particularly important and meaningful memorial trophy presented to one nominated student each year for their outstanding contribution to Sport. Dan’s name has already been engraved onto the honours plaque which lists previous years’ winners dating back every year to1994. Students who have also received this accolade in recent years include Leah Newell in 2015, Sarah Jans in 2014 and Aliko Mwambingu in 2013.

Jack Hayes-Roberts has his sights firmly set on the Formula One track after his successful second place wins in his first two races at outdoor karting racing. The year 9 student’s aim is to go into professional motorsport and ‘beat Lewis Hamilton or Nico Rosberg’. His dad Colin said that Jack has always been interested in motorsport and since the age of 11 has pestered him to go to the local karting track at Hooton Park. Once Jack had seen them racing on the circuit his sights were firmly fixed. He got his own kart last year and since then has been constantly practicing until he felt he was ready to start racing. He has already shown an instinctive ability in the sport having gained second place in his first two races and achieving the fastest lap time. Jack is in with a chance of winning this year’s championship in Hooton before going on to the UK karting scene.

K HIGH SCHOOL The Diamond Jubilee Gwilym takes silver in nationals Queen’s Park High School Rowing Club travelled to the premier rowing event for juniors of the year at Holme Pierrepont in Nottingham. The club saw 14 students take part over the weekend, which included a new skills and drills event on the Friday for Year 9s. The club had success with Gwilym Harris winning a silver medal in his event, which saw him compete against students of the same age from all over the country, testing his skill in balance, manoeuvrability, technique and racing. Most of the other crews progressed through to the finals on Saturday, however these were later cancelled due to worsening weather conditions. Both Harrison Kendall Smith and Gwilym Harris raced in single boats along with Zara Gautier-Price and Kiera Burke who raced in a composite quad with Royal Chester girls - Fenella, Hannah and cox Freya; they successfully qualified through to the A/B semifinals and finals on Sunday.
Artists give food for thought A Year 9 Art class have been inspired by the community art group, ‘Assemble’ and taken on a co-construction project to design the pasta bar canteen. The students worked together to decide on a basic layout then split off into smaller groups to focus on their area of the canteen. This involved re-inventing table tops, light shades and wall designs. The project has been going on for many weeks enabling students to manage their own learning whilst developing their creativity and team work skills as well as being able to create art with little assistance.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
AUTUMN FRUITS October is a month when the garden still sports some colour and foliage before the leaves fall in autumn. Squahes and pumpkins come in a multitude of shapes and colours as can be seen from the attached photo. When you tap the squash it should sound hollow and be ready to be stored in a cool dry frost free place for up to 6 months. Leaves will start to colour up towards the end of the month. Parthenocissus tricuspidata or Boston Creeper has large 3 lobed leaves that turn a brilliant red in autumn. If you have space on a wall and don’t mind climbing ladders every year to stop it going into the gutters, then it will give interest from spring to autumn. Any well drained soil, ideally with moisture will suit it. An underrated plant is the Persicaria affinis varieties with pink or red small bottle brush flowers. Not often for sale but often seen draped over wall or in crevices in gardens they make good ground cover and will flower from late summer into autumn. New varieties are being developed for their striking foliage and one most often seen is Persicaria microcephala Red Dragon with deep red and green leaves. Lastly, grasses such as the many Miscanthus varieties, tend to look great at this time of year. They will grow tall to 1.5m and develop silky tassels of flowers in red, pink and cream before fading to straw colours in winter. Miscanthus sinensis likes any type of soil provided it is relatively moist. Paired with lower growing Rudbekia fulgida Goldsturm and Sedum spectabile in drifts, it will provide colour and movement in autumn. There is a lot to do in the garden in October. Splitting and replanting perennials so they settle
in for winter. Plant trees and shrubs at this time of year too, except for tender shrubs as they may not survive winter. Planting spring bulbs to give colour from January onwards can start in October although Tulips are best planted in November to avoid disease. Pruning of deciduous shrubs can start although any evergreen shrubs are best left until next spring before cutting back.

Exam success ‘shows evidence of school’s improvement’ Following the success of the A Level Results, Queen’s Park High School is now celebrating some exceptional GCSE results that provide still further evidence that it is moving towards its goal of being an ‘outstanding’ school. Attainment in maths and English rose by over 10 per cent this year. Furthermore, students making expected progress in English is now over 80 per cent, this coupled with students achieving the top grades across all subject areas, and the school achieving its best ever Ebacc performance, provides the clearest indication yet that the school is striding towards excellence for all students. Among the highest performing students were Felicity Weir (8A*s and 4As), Rona Fishburn (8A*s and 2As), Angus Jones (6A*s and 3As), and Jakub Cybulak (5A*s and 5As). These students typify the determination of all students at the school to be successful and to achieve the very best results. Samantha McIlwaine, Humaira Aslam, Tamia Han, Amy Mulholland, Arthur Clouting and Heather Jones also achieved top grades across a range of subjects. Headteacher Lyndsay Watterson said: “One of the many rewards of working in education is on days like today, seeing students achieve above and beyond expectation and being rewarded for their endeavours. Our students worked exceptionally hard in preparation for their exams, with many of them even coming into school on Saturday mornings, voluntarily too! I am delighted to see that this hard work and dedication has paid off and I would like to wish them all every success in the future, whether that is in the sixth form here at Queen’s Park or elsewhere. I would also like to thank our parents for their continued support over the last year in particular. This is a day of celebration for all! “Queen’s Park High school is now brimming with future excellence! While our Ofsted inspection in June notably recognised our improvement journey, the one piece of the jigsaw we were missing at the time was some examination results to evidence this. We now have these and are firmly on track to achieve our ambitions for the future.” 34 To advertise call 350398
