Building starts on the new St M After three years of serious planning and fundraising, the building of a new Community Centre in Handbridge has finally started. The centre is due to open to the local community in June 2018, providing a new hub for community activities for everyone, from the very young through to the elderly. A new car park for the centre will be located on additional land donated by the Grosvenor Estate underneath which a recent archaeological excavation revealed part of a small Roman farm enclosure, and evidence of a late post-medieval clamp kiln, which was used to manufacture bricks for local use. Now thanks to three years hard work and fundraising a new building is about to be raised at the heart of the Handbridge Community.

Ted Graham, who has spearheaded the project, said: “Everyone involved in leading the development of the Centre is very grateful for the support of the community. Fundraising has obviously been a real challenge and we appreciate the loyal dedication of so many people who have pledged and donated money. A wide variety of fundraising activities have been organised over the past three years, making a valuable contribution to reaching our funding target this year. Local councillor Razia Daniels, the Lord Mayor of Chester, has chosen the building of the new Centre as one of her charities for fundraising during her tenure in office. Chester MP Chris Matheson has also been very active in supporting the development. Active fundraising is continuing that will help to cover the costs of fitting out the new

Mary’s Handbridge Centre building. If anyone would like to know more about the new Centre or would be willing to make a donation, they can email Ted Graham at centre2017info@ gmail.com The new centre will include a hall and two community rooms to meet the needs of a range of organisations, groups and clubs. All the rooms will be linked to Wifi and in the main rooms audio and visual presentation equipment
will be provided. A commercial standard kitchen and servery will improve catering. During the building period, groups, who have used the current hall over many decades, are being temporarily relocated to other venues in the area. The interior of the church has been re-organised to provide space for storage and for some groups to hold their regular meetings.

ON THE BEAT with Police Community Support Officer Lauren Davies Over the last few weeks there has been an increase in antisocial behavior at Westminster Park. PREPARE YOUR BODY FOR NEXT SUMMER Skincare advice with Jane Bryant, from the Hough Green Clinic I hope you all had an enjoyable summer. As we move into Autumn and Winter rather too rapidly for my liking it is worth mentioning that this is a perfect time of year to think about Laser/IPL treatments.
When summer returns how great it would be to have hair free legs. Imagine not having to worry about organising your bikini, underarm or leg waxing to coincide with your holiday plans, or worse still, not being able to get an appointment with

your favourite waxing clinic because they are fully booked! Another huge benefit with Laser/IPL treatment is saying goodbye to unsightly in-growing hairs, the lumpy spots and the scarring. You would require 4 to 6 treatments every 6 to 8 weeks. As our prices start as low as £50 for a bikini treatment and you pay as you go for each treatment, rather than for a course, it is easy to budget. How about an early Christmas present? Our Nordlys by Ellipse Laser/IPL is our second Ellipse machine we have had in 11 years. After enjoying our latest model for a year now we are finding this model even more effective than the last and the added benefit of the larger applicator has cut our hair treatment times by half which is great news for everyone. Skin Rejuvenation treatment for sun damaged skin, sun/liver spots on the face, hands and décolletage can be treated at this time of year too. Thread vein treatment to the legs will also benefit. As we age valves in our leg veins become less effective, so less blood is pumped back from the legs. This means blood vessels in our legs become larger, darker and more visible. The Ellipse leg vein treatment uses a precisely calculated pulse of laser energy exactly directed to the vessel being treated. This causes the blood inside the vessel to heat up; causing the wall of the
vessel to collapse. The vessel is reabsorbed naturally by your white blood cells. The skin surrounding the vessel is not affected by the treatment. Smaller leg veins disappear immediately after treatment, larger ones fade away more gradually over a few weeks. We also treat thread veins on the face. For the tricky ones around the nose and any blood spots or Campbell de Morgan spots we use the laser. If you suffer with nail fungus now is a good time again to treat these too as toe nails take a whole year to form and grow; whereas finger nails take 3 months. For the nail fungus you will need 3 weekly treatments followed by a month break before your 4th and final treatment. You have to be patient with this treatment but as the nail grows you gradually clip off the effected nail and watch the new fungus free nail emerge at the base and grow. Nail fungus treatment is £50 per session. For more information please visit our website at www.houghgreenclinic.co.uk or telephone 01244 680414 and speak to Samantha, Lynn or myself. We would be delighted to help or answer any of your concerns. Jane Bryant, Advanced Skin Health Specialist, Hough Green Clinic Tel: 01244 680414

Hayley’s health and fitness
LIFESTYLE TIPS TO GET YOU FIT & HEALTHY HERE ARE my simple steps to becoming a healthy happier you. 1. Give yourself a realistic target and time-scale to achieve. Be mindful that when weight comes off slowly it is more likely to stay off. 2. Avoid crash diets and quick fixes. Anything worth doing isn’t easy, you might lose one stone in two weeks crash dieting but then as soon as you eat normally you will gain your weight back and more! 3. You must get moving daily. Office jobs mean many of us are so far from reaching the recommended 10,000 steps a day, log yours with a pedometer and start increasing your steps. 4. Limit your amount of food, start using the scales to measure your food! When you read calories on the back of food its often based on servings/ grams. People often double or even triple portions to fill their plate. This means your literally eating double the calories per serving of food. 5. Take your time eating, avoid sitting in front of the TV to eat meals, chew your food properly it will tell your brain your full quicker. 6. How many take-aways are you having, if its more than one a month is too many! 7. Don’t be fooled by no added sugar, this doesn’t mean there is No sugar in them! There are still natural sugars in them and carbohydrates, remember to check labels. 8. Exercise as well as diet, you might be less on the scales but if you still struggling to get up and down the stairs and can’t run for a bus without getting out of breath, it’s time to get your fitness up. Remember exercise as well as diet promotes all the internal benefits as well as increasing muscle mass, which helps take pressure off your joints.
9. Be careful running, as soon as people diet they also hit to the pavements to shed the weight. Remember if you’re not used to running, build this up gradually, buy decent trainers to avoid impact, this isn’t always the quickest form of exercise to get results you want. Interval training has been proven to be more effective. 10. Drink lemon water, there are so many benefits to doing this daily, remember to drink more when exercising. 11. Cut out white bread. Opt for granary! 12. Remember you’re a role model to your child’s eating habits in later life. If they see you snacking all day on fast foods its likely they will think this is the norm, teach them good habits to prevent them from gaining excessive weight when they grow up. 13. Lastly, don’t give up lifestyle changes are one of the most effective ways to shed weight and keep it off Written for Talkabout Publishing by Hayley Ryder Personal Trainer and Class instructor 07551 878786

Changes to council ward boundaries COUNCIL boundaries in Cheshire West are likely to change, with the introduction of a new ‘Overleigh Ward’ which takes in Handbridge, Westminster Park and the Lache. It is part of the review which will see the overall number of councillors fall from 75 to 70. In the current arrangements in this area there are two Handbridge Park councillors – Razia Daniels and Neil Sullivan, and a separate Lache ward where Jane Mercer is the councillor. The new arrangements will see all three in a combined Overleigh ward. The proposals have attracted criticism from Reg Barritt, general secretary of Handbride Residents’ Council, who said that Handbridge has little in common with the other areas it is to combine with. But the recommendation from the review commission states: “We fully accept the argument that there appears little to differentiate Lache and parts of Westminster Park and that residents from across the area share facilities. We have concluded that this site should be combined in a ward with neighbouring parts of Chester. We therefore propose to adopt a three-councillor Overleigh ward as part of our draft recommendations.” Other proposals include combining Newton with Hoole and splitting Great Boughton into Vicars Cross and Boughton.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
AUTUMN FRUITS October is a month when the garden still sports some colour and foliage before the leaves fall in autumn. Squahes and pumpkins come in a multitude of shapes and colours as can be seen from the attached photo. When you tap the squash it should sound hollow and be ready to be stored in a cool dry frost free place for up to 6 months. Leaves will start to colour up towards the end of the month. Parthenocissus tricuspidata or Boston Creeper has large 3 lobed leaves that turn a brilliant red in autumn. If you have space on a wall and don’t mind climbing ladders every year to stop it going into the gutters, then it will give interest from spring to autumn. Any well drained soil, ideally with moisture will suit it. An underrated plant is the Persicaria affinis varieties with pink or red small bottle brush flowers. Not often for sale but often seen draped over wall or in crevices in gardens they make good ground cover and will flower from late summer into autumn. New varieties are being developed for their striking foliage and one most often seen is Persicaria microcephala Red Dragon with deep red and green leaves. Lastly, grasses such as the many Miscanthus varieties, tend to look great at this time of year. They will grow tall to 1.5m and develop silky tassels of flowers in red, pink and cream before fading to straw colours in winter. Miscanthus sinensis likes any type of soil provided it is relatively moist. Paired with lower growing Rudbekia fulgida Goldsturm and Sedum spectabile in drifts, it will provide colour and movement in autumn. There is a lot to do in the garden in October. Splitting and replanting perennials so they settle
in for winter. Plant trees and shrubs at this time of year too, except for tender shrubs as they may not survive winter. Planting spring bulbs to give colour from January onwards can start in October although Tulips are best planted in November to avoid disease. Pruning of deciduous shrubs can start although any evergreen shrubs are best left until next spring before cutting back.

Without doubt, a great arts show Queen’s Park High School hosted the Without the Walls arts festival shortly before the end of the summer term which drew in nearly 1,200 people to see performances of dance, music, drama and poetry as well as some amazing artwork.
Pupils show their mastery of maths Children from Overleigh St. Mary’s and Chester Blue Coat Primary Schools, visited QPHS for a day of mathematics and art (MART) led by Dr Sally Bamber and students from the University of Chester. Leading up to the day children had been focusing on primes, factors and multiples and then transferred that learning into art. Children used different colours, textures and patterns to represent different numbers.
