MANY readers will use the A55 and Wrexham Road and will be well used to the big delays at that junction at peak times. So the Highways Agency has started work to remedy the situation with improvements at the roundabout and roads off it. As a result there will be plenty of disruption to traffic over the next five months. You can read more in this month’s edition. Elsewhere in the magazine there is news from Queen’s Park High School, a royal visit to the Lache, gardening, crime update with Jenna Smith, St Mary’s Church and much more. Please remember to support your local traders and say that you saw their advert in the Overleigh Roundabout! The Talkabout Team

This unique workout combines the elements of Pilates, yoga, resistance training and ballet into a highly effective regime performed on the mat and at a ballet barre. The technique utilises the body’s own resistance in conjunction with weights, bands and small balls. The effect is a long, lean dancer’s body without being a dancer!
Wednesday 9.15am & 6pm Thursday 5.45pm Saturday 10.30am
The low impact, total body workout lifts the butt, tones the thighs, flattens the abs and sculpts the arms, whilst protecting the joints. Small isometric contractions are performed and integrated with an interval training approach that burns fat and improves cardiovascular fitness.

PLEASANT PHEASANT THE ϐirst of October sees the beginning of the game season for pheasants. This Season continues until the last day of January and gives continuous opportunity for some very ϐlavoursome meat at very good value. Pheasant contains a high level of iron, protein, Vitamin B6 and selenium which helps to protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. It is fair to say that game is not for everyone and pheasant particularly may not be everyones cup of tea but if it is cooked correctly then this bird can provide some very tasty and wholesome meals for all the family. Note: However you choose to cook your pheasant it is paramount not to overcook it. The meat is always very lean and as such has no give. It will go dry and tough if overcooked. Pheasant is very versatile and can be delicious when roasted, casseroled and even stir-fried. Pheasant breasts are available as well as whole birds and they are superb stuffed, wrapped in bacon and roasted, then served with a creamy sauce. Stir-fried pheasant breast is a very quick eaasy m mea e l. This month’s recipe is for traditional roasted pheasant. It is rather nice to keep things really simple and just enjoy the natural taste of the bird. This is my favourite way to enjoy pheasant. Traditional Roasted Pheasant 1. Generously rub some butter into the legs and breasts. 2. Place a clove of garlic into the cavity of the bird 3. Put a sprig of fresh thyme or rosemary onto the breasts of the bird 4. Wrap approximately 3 slices of streaky bacon around the pheasant and herbs to protect the meat from the heat of the oven. 5 . Roast in a preheated oven at 1 8 0 C or gas mark 5 for 35-45mins. 6. Rest your pheasant for 10 minutes before serving. This very simple roast is delicious served with roasted parsnips, wilted spinach and a red wine gravy. I also love a little redcurrant jelly on the side. It is superb with all game.

HEN Anthony Grosvenor from Eaton Hall sold off some land in Dodleston to the aspiring Thomas Egerton in 1576, little was he to realise the signiϐicance of such a transaction
The land was between Dodleston and Gorstella and within the Township boundary of Dodleston. It included several working farms and a hall, this being Dodleston Hall. The original hall was demolished and rebuilt in the Georgian fashion in 1793; it is now known as Dodleston Hall Farm. In 1576, the original hall was occupied by Thomas Egerton and his family. Although most of his time was spent in London, he was at the beginning of a career in law that would eventually see him become the second most important and powerful man in the country. But that’s another story! Through his work, Thomas was knighted in 1594 and rose to the peerage in1603. By various means he built up a substantial portfolio
of properties throughout twelve counties in England and after his death in March 1617 his son John inherited all of his father’s wealth and land. In May of that year, John was elevated to the peerage as the First earl of Bridgwater and these inheritances would be passed on to subsequent heirs. The Dodleston property eventually landed with Scroop Egerton, the Fourth earl of Bridgwater and it was he who disposed of some property. One such parcel included Dodleston Hall and surrounding ields. Maps of the early and mid 18th century show the land then being owned by John Kelsall and John Glegg. John Kelsall had the majority of the land, including Dodleston Hall and John Glegg a smaller portion close to the Township boundary near Gorstella. The two families were to come together in 1778 with the marriage of Bridgett, the only child of John and Mary Kelsall to John Glegg. A marble memorial in the bell tower of St Mary’s Church in Dodleston records this union.
COTTAGE The land owned by John Glegg included a small ‘two up two down’ cottage and a barn. The cottage now has a date of 1794 with the initials I G J clearly displayed on the front elevation. It is presumed this refers to the Glegg ownership. The relatively small holding of John Glegg, now located on the left hand side of Kinnerton Road heading towards Gorstella has over the years had many

owners but in the late 1940s, the simple farm had a radical make over when it was bought as a weekend retreat by Dr Cecil Ledward Forde and his wife Cleonice. It became known as Tudor Farm.
Doctor Forde died in October 1960 and sometime after his death, his widow Mrs Forde moved into accommodation at Crossways, Gorstella. She died in 1981 and both are buried in St Mary’s churchyard.
The Fordes set about extending the building and the varying roof levels are evidence of how the cottage was transformed into the building that currently exists.
In about 1968, Tudor Farm came into the ownership of John Anderton. It was he who took over the management of the organisation Wildfowlers Association of Great Britain and Ireland (WAGBI) that later became the British Association of Shooting and Conservation (BASC) whose headquarters are located at Marford Mill, Rossett.
In December 1950 the magazine Sport & Country carried a two page spread featuring Tudor Farm and the article began with the words ‘This is the brief story of a little cottage, just for the weekends, in the country that has now become a permanent home and a small farm…’ Dr and Mrs Forde were credited with ‘transforming the old cottage into the farmhouse as it is today’. And besides the house, ‘land has been brought into cultivation and many gallons of milk a day are now being produced’
BULLOCKS The article goes on to say that nineteen of its twenty six acres were pasture, the other seven given over to oats, peas and beans. The dairy herd comprised of eleven Jersey cows with an average milk yield of 400 gallons per month. A few bullocks were kept for fattening and they had a lock of forty eight Canadian Plymouth chickens. The farm, which was considered as being a hobby for Mrs Forde was managed by her brother, Major F.J.Ridgway and he employed a full time dairy maid and boy, part time. There is anecdotal reference to the fact Mrs Forde was so proud of her Jersey herd that she had them regularly shampooed to keep them clean and smart!
GALLERY The property was then purchased by Mr & Mrs Peter Bullivant in 1974, itts present owners. It is th hey who have maintained Tudor Farm in its pristine T condition. Apart from being a family home it also houses th he Gorstella Gallery and has two art exhibitions h each year. The gallery space was created from the cow w sh hippons adjoining their property. The same shippons p where the Jersey cattle were w milked in the 1950s! m Adjoining the land is a small area known as Windmill Hill. There was W originally a windmill grinding corn on this site but in the early 18th century it burnt down. More than 400 windmills were lost throughout the country as high winds from a great storm caused the sails to turn furiously, creating high friction loads that resulted in ires destroying the timber structures. Tudor Farm is a simple, un-prepossessing residence but has a great history connected with simple life in Dodleston.

FLOWERING colour is at a premium in mid autumn this year after the mild winter but there are many that offer colour. I have grown Clematis Bill Mackenzie for its wonderful lemon yellow flowers in summer and autumn. They are followed by fluffy seed heads. Once established this climber will cover a large area with its vigorous growth. Cut back to 30cm or 1ft in late winter and it will send up many new stems to flower that year. It will grow on most soils provided the roots are shaded and kept moist. Another colourful climber is the Boston Creeper or Parthenocissus tricuspidata. It has a 3 lobed leaf that produces glorious red / purple colour in autumn. The photo shows it against the green and cream of ivy leaves. It is vigorous and will colour best in a partially shaded wall in well drained soil. Just make sure it does not cover the house! Nerines are bulbs that flower in autumn with the flowers appearing before the leaf. The photo shows the complex brilliant pink flower in all its glory. So if you have a very sunny spot and well drained soil in a sheltered
position, you can grow some of these exquisite flowers. Make sure they are not sheltered by larger plants. An often overlooked shrub is the Winged Spindle or Euonymus alatus. This small shrub has tiny cream flowers in spring which in autumn turn into fingernail sized pink berries. The leaf colour in autumn turns red and would contrast well with a variegated holly. Winter pots should be planted up to give you a lift in the darker months. I plant primulas, cyclamen hederifolium, winter pansies and small daffodils or tulips in pots. Also try a variegated hebe, a spring flowering heather or a pieris with pansies and primulas. Use John Innes No 3 potting compost mixed with grit to improve drainage and enable plants to survive freezing temperatures. In the garden cut back dead stems that look tatty and remove leaves from low plants that could get smothered. Protect your brassicas from those pigeons that like to eat them by covering with netting. Pick your last beans, tomatoes, pumpkins and squashes and remove the old plants.
