REJUVENATING FACIAL ACUPUNCTURE AT FIELDS CLINIC fields physio
CLINIC
If you are looking for a natural solution to deal with the ageing process consider FACIAL ACUPUNCTURE. Initially you will have a consultation with one of our Acupuncture specialists to discuss your areas of concern. The process consists of a course of treatments where very fine needles are inserted into the lines on your face. This increases circulation to the facial muscles, stimulating tissue cell production thus plumping out the lines, helping improve elasticity of the skin and giving the skin a healthy glow. Simultaneously the acupuncturist will use relaxation and balancing points around your body to assist in reducing tension, benefitting both mind and body. The outcome being improved complexion and a more vibrant facial appearance. I was sceptical and wanted to try it myself before offering it as a treatment at Fields, and now I am absolutely convinced of the benefits in helping your face glow and reducing the depth of the lines. A monthly follow up is best after the course to maintain the benefits. The effects of relieving tension are fantastic, although it is best not to have this done prior to a busy day as you are so chilled afterwards you won’t get anything constructive done!! If you are interested please call and arrange a free consultation with one of our specialist Acupuncturists to discuss in more depth.
Here are a few genuine comments I have recently received: You are looking fabulous, have you been away?
You look great, really glowing.
You look 10 years younger!
For further information please contact Fields on 01244 671948 or send your query via our web page www.fieldsphysio.co.uk and we will be happy to assist.

ON THE BEAT with Police Community Support Officer Chris Fox
Basic measures to keep the thieves at bay I would like to take this opportunity to remind residents on some basic security measures that can help them from becoming a victim of crime. Ensure that your doors and patio doors are always locked when you are in or out of your home. Also ensure that your windows are locked unless you are in the room where your window is open. Put in place a routine where you check that your house doors and windows are locked and check your car is locked before you go to bed. With regards to your vehicles – always check they are locked when you lock them. It is easy to make an error with key fobs where you think that you have locked the vehicle but in fact it hasn’t been done correctly.

Also make sure that there are no valuables in your vehicle. The vast majority of thefts from motor vehicles are opportunistic and someone will approach a parked vehicle and try the door handles. They will then look in the vehicle to see if there are any valuables on display. If the doors of a vehicle are locked and there are no valuables on display the likelihood is the subject will move on and try another vehicle. If you see anyone suspicious or have anything to report please call us on 999 if it is emergency or 101 for a non-emergency response.
Please call 101 if you have any issues to report. Also my e mail address is Christopher. fox@cheshire.pnn.police.uk. Please remember if you have any issues the Police and the local councilors hold the following Surgeries on the first Saturday of every month: Chester Street, Saltney – 9am-10.15am Westminster Park Shops – 10.30am – 11.45am Handbridge – Dee Bridge - Opposite the Ship Inn – 12noon-1pm. Westminster Park housing plans cause concern LOCAL councillors are unhappy after Cheshire West planners approved the building of 31 houses at the end of Sherbourne Avenue on land previously green belt, but now designated for housing in the Local Plan. Cllrs Neil Sullivan and Razia Daniels opposed this application alongside Westminster Park residents because it did not accord with the guidance from the Inspector who approved the final version of the Local Plan which said that “Development should be brought forward in line with an agreed development brief to ensure the delivery of a high quality urban extension and neighbourhood to Chester”. This development brief was considered necessary to deal with the impact of approximately 1300 new homes on traffic congestion, flooding and lack of primary school provision on the existing community. The development brief is not yet submitted let alone agreed and we considered that this initial piecemeal development should have been rejected until there is an agreed development brief. The planning committee voted 6-5 to push through the plans. The Handbridge councillors added: “We hope this does not set a precedent for piecemeal development which may cause extra negative impacts on our community.”

Allington Place fun day success A fun day held in memory of a Handbridge community champion has been hailed a great success. The event was organised by Handbridge Community Association in memory of Marjorie Meacock and was supported by Handbridge Park Cllrs Razia Daniels and Neil Sullivan. Children enjoyed taking part in various activities including a junior talent contest, bongo drums, circus skills and goal scoring challenge and everyone had a chance to add colour to the memorial painting which will be displayed in Allington Place Play area together with an engraved brass commemorative plaque. Cllr Daniels said: “As Deputy Lord Mayor of Chester I unveiled a plaque in the memory of Marjorie Meacock in Edgar’s Field Park last week and paid tribute to her hard work and commitment to the Handbridge Community, she was a formidable lady and will be sadly missed by the community.” Cllr Sullivan added: “We would like to thank everyone for making the day a great success.” 10 To advertise call 350398

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Handbridge, Curzon Park, Westminster Park &
Hough Green areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Diamond Jubilee Extend orTheMove?
M
ANY people love where they live - the house, the neighbours and the location - but when things become a bit cramped they often face a difficult decision: “Do we extend or do we move?”
take appropriate loading of a floor rather than a ceiling? Do you need planning permission? All of these things cost money but you won’t necessarily see a great benefit from the expense incurred.
As estate agents we are always being asked for our opinion and predicted end value of a house if extended. Here are a few hints, tips and some questions to get you thinking about whether extending your home is right for you.
SIDE EXTENSION
How much will the house be worth if we extend? Generally speaking if your property is already in good condition and you decide to extend into the loft or at the back of the house you should plan to stay for the medium to long term. A good quality extension will usually cost anywhere from £30,000 upwards, but you are not guaranteed that this amount will be transferred straight to the end value of your home. LOFT CONVERSION If you want to extend into the loft we generally advise that you try and incorporate an ensuite as well as another bedroom. This will be more expensive but will certainly help with end value. Think about access into the new loft room. Will you lose a bedroom creating space for a second staircase? Is there enough head height or will you need to include dormers and a new roof? Will the joists need strengthening to
Extending to the rear or side to create a large kitchen and social space is always popular but consider how much garden area will be used. Family houses with small gardens can sometimes struggle when it comes to resale. Also think about a two storey extension rather than just single. The cost does not double but the space can. Have a look where your drains are. How close to the boundary can you build? Will you need a party wall agreement? Will a neighbour have a right to light issue? Can you build under permitted development or do you need permission? Whatever you decide to do, make sure you get the relevant building regulations approval and we always advise consulting an architect before you approach a builder. If you are facing a decision about whether to extend or move, do contact Somerville’s Estate Agents to discuss things through. We will be able to provide you specific advice about your property and an estimate of the current and post-building work value.

Charlie and Henry were also racing in their double, they made it to the final but unfortunately they crashed and just missed out on a tankard. Harrison raced his J15 single and made it to the final but narrowly missed out on winning. All in all an exciting day with three wins from Gwilym in his J15 single, Ben in his IM3 single and Amy and Emily in their WJ17 double!

K HIGH SCHOOL The Diamond Jubilee
Big challenges for explorers A total of 25 Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze participants completed their expedition. Over the two days students were both mentally and physically challenged; navigating through forestry, fields, footpaths and towns to show their understanding of map reading and orienteering skills. On the first day they planned and walked a route from Delamere Visitor Centre to Brassy Green where they set up camp overnight. During this overnight stay students were tested as they set up tents, cooked an evening meal and breakfast on a camp stove. The next day students navigated their way to Kelsall carrying all their belongings in their huge rucksacks.
Fun filled fiesta Students spent a fun filled adventure in the south of Spain exploring Benalmadena, Mijas, Malaga and Puerto Buenas.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
GLORIOUS WARM AUTUMN COLOURS
In early autumn the colours change from pastels to hot colours and if you plan your garden scheme you can have a concentrated area filled with autumn colour. Autumn flowering shrubs that are reliable and flowers for weeks are the varieties of Hibiscus syriacus. These shrubs will grow on most soil provided they retain moisture. They take a year or two to start to grow and also come into leaf later in spring than most shrubs. However, the show from the large flowers ranging from white with pink centres, to dark pink, blue and pure white is well worth it and once settled in, they can get to 2m tall. For drier soil, how about Abelia Frances Mason. This likes a slightly sheltered position if it is to keep some foliage in winter. The leaves are green and yellow with fragrant white flowers in autumn. One photo is of Abbeywood gardens near Delamere with its prairie planting of grasses such as the tall golden Stipa gigantea and swathes of perennials in wide open spaces. They look stunning at this time of year. One of the plants featured are Sedum spectabile with flat heads of pink flowers
loved by bees. In theory they like a well drained soil and their fleshy leaves do well in drier conditions but they also grow in damper soils. Plant next to Rudbekia fulgida Goldsturm with its yellow flowers for a striking colour combination. Work to do in the garden includes starting to plant daffodils and crocuses for spring. Divide summer flowering perennials and replant them, watering in well to rejuvenate them for next season. Water and harvest runner beans and tomatoes regularly to extend the season. Tomatoes take time to ripen so don’t give up if they stay green, leave them on the plant to ripen. If you have grown pumpkins and squashes, remove leaves so that they ripen. If you would like to visit gardens for ideas, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. You can visit Abbeywood Gardens Delamere ifrom Sunday to Thursday. Mount Pleasant gardens near Kelsall are open on 3rd and 4th September with their Sculpture Exhibition so do go and see the many different themed borders, ponds, stumpery and ferns.

Razia inspired by young hero The Deputy Lord Mayor of Chester Cllr Razia Daniels was inspired when she met a little boy with a big story to tell at Chester Charity Dragon Boat Festival. Cllr Daniels met youngster Hugo Saleri at the event and heard from his dad Mushtaq how Hugo underwent open heart surgery when he was just seven months old. Hugo’s recovery inspired their dragon boat team to raise funds for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital at the festival. Mushtaq said: “Alder Hey is a remarkable place and we were very lucky to have it on our doorstep.” He added: “We all had a great time and a great deal of money was raised for the respective good causes.” Cllr Daniels said: “Despite the rain everyone taking part seem to be really enjoying themselves. “It was competitive, with a dramatic photo finish end to the race, and a total of £16,542 was raised for various charities. “I would like to say thank you to everyone who took part in the race.” l Deputy Lord Mayor of Chester, Cllr Razia Daniels, Hugo Saleri and Mushtaq Saleri

Something fishy going on! Neil and Nikki Pearce owners of Lionel Tackle Shop in Buckley are the sponsors of the first ever QPHS Fishing Club which enabled Mr Clubb and Mr Bearcroft to take a group of Year 9 and 10 students to The Trap Pool. The Secretary of Buckley Anglers, Pete Evans, and some members from the Trap did one-to-one fishing coaching with the students. Mr Clubb said: “We had a really successful day, with anglers catching up to 22 fish!

CH4 History with Bernard Dennis
LIKE many things in life, the obvious can stare you in the face yet the reality passes you by: to quote Shakespeare’s Hamlet “Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar”. An extension on this is that everyday objects, be they vulgar or just familiar and plain ordinary, are most likely to be taken for granted. How many residents of Dodleston, those visiting or just passing through the village have ever thought to consider the origins of the two large silo towers at Moat Farm in Pulford Lane? Commonly known locally as the Salt & Pepper Pots, they featured as such on the cover of the recent re-print of the thirtieth anniversary Cookery Book produced by Dodleston & District WI; the cover being designed by Abigail Gifford, a pupil at Dodleston C of E Primary School. The two silo towers have been in existence since 1974 and were installed at Moat Farm to hold cut grass for silage used to feed cattle. The correct technical name for them is Concrete Stave Silos. These towers are 24.40 meters (80 feet) tall and 6.10 meters (20 feet) in diameter. Each will hold around 200 tonnes of grass silage as a winter feed, but are no longer used. The towers were de-commissioned in 1985 as they became uneconomical for the storage of grass silage. With the falling market price of milk and the ever increasing cost of energy, new ‘clamp’ silos for grass silage were built adjacent to the towers. It takes one day to fill a ‘clamp’ silo whereas three days were needed to fill a ‘Stave’ silo. The energy, mainly electric powered blowers to ‘blow’ the cut grass to the top of the silo was making their use expensive and therefore not viable compared to more conventional methods of tractors to fill ‘clamp’ silos. 42 To advertise call 350398
Concrete Stave Silos are constructed from small pre-cast concrete blocks. Each block is about 25 cms wide x 76 cms high and 8 cms thick and have ridged grooves along the edge that locks them together into a high strength shell. Concrete is much stronger in compression than tension, so the silo tower is reinforced with steel hoops, or wire bands, encircling the structure at pre-determined intervals. The static pressure of the silage inside the silo pressing outward on the staves increases towards the bottom. As will be seen on the Moat Farm silo towers, the steel hoops are spaced wider apart near the top but progressively more closely spaced together nearer the bottom. This is to prevent the seams of the concrete blocks from opening and the contents leaking out. The bright shiny domes of the towers are technically referred to as Hemisperical, ie, half globe size. Economical in design, practical and easy to install, the shiny dome acts as a landmark when the sun shines and can be seen for miles around Dodleston. Liverpool Flying Club use the domes as a landmark for training flights and that’s one reason why so many light aircraft can be seen circling Dodleston when the weather permits. The origin of the word ‘silo’ comes from the Greek ‘Siros’ meaning ‘pit for holding grain’ and throughout history silos have been used by many cultures around the world for this purpose. In more recent times, silos have come to have an alternative meaning and use as underground storage for missiles but, have no fear, the landmark silos of Dodleston aren’t a target for unfriendly fire; at least I hope not!
