Water pumping station work angers Westminster Park residents RESIDENTS of Westminster Park are furious at Dee Valley Water’s decision to move ahead with the construction of a pumping station, despite the fact that plans have not yet been brought before the Council’s planning committee. Householders received late notification that preparatory would start on Monday 7th August to construct the pumping station on a grassed area with mature trees situated between Fir Tree Avenue and the Wrexham Road. Plans for this work, however, have only just been submitted to the council and have yet to be considered by the Planning Committee. Further to objections by residents, local Westminster Park councillors Neil Sullivan and Razia Daniels have called the plans in for closer scrutiny. Fir Tree residents, Stephen and Carolyn Barnwell are incensed by the attitude of Dee Valley Water. Stephen said: “This last minute 8 To advertise call 350398

notification is typical of the high-handed way in which this project has been conducted,” “Back in April, without any consultation, and without any intention of applying for planning permission, Dee Valley posted a notice on a nearby fence informing us of their intention to build a pumping station the size of a double garage opposite our house. Further to our objections, they have submitted plans to Cheshire West and Chester Council.” Dee Valley Water claims that the pumping station is necessary to meet OfWat’s requirements for resilience in the water supply, but residents are sure that it has more to do with ensuring that there is a good supply to the proposed housing development further down Wrexham Road. The residents have instigated meetings with Dee Valley Water, which were also attended by MP Chris Matheson and local councillor Neil Sullivan, to

request consideration of other possible sites. Chris Matheson has sent a letter to the Council objecting to the plans. Brian Westcott of the Westminster Park Residents’ Association believes that this pumping station should not be located on Fir Tree Avenue. He says that it should be part of Wrexham Road scheme. “We are very concerned about the effects of this pumping station so close to local houses, and the damage that is going to be caused to the trees screening the houses from the Wrexham Road,” he continued. “This area is part of the buffer zone between the Westminster Park estate and the Wrexham Road and we are sure that there are alternative sites in the new development that could accommodate this pumping station and be less damaging to the environment.” l Carolyn Barnwell and Brian Westcott on the site of the proposed pumping station on Fir Tree Avenue.

ON THE BEAT with Police Community Support Officer Lauren Davies Hello all! Now I am a couple of months in on my new beat, I am settling in and getting to know different groups within the community. A main issue raised by local residents has been speeding. These issues were more specifically raised on Overleigh Road and Lache Park Avenue. Both are 20mph roads . I have deployed the speed gun and Speed indicator device a number of times. Lache Park Avenue has displayed particularly fast speeds. Also, as we find ourselves in the summer months. Can everyone please make sure that all outbuildings, garages etc are fully secure. There have been a number of break ins to insecure garages in recent weeks. Finally, I have recently been given an individual police Twitter account. This information will be specific to my beat and the Handbridge park ward. Please give me a follow on @ chepoldavies. YOU SAID—Residents raised concerns regarding youths in Westminster Park. Reports were these youths were causing damage and ASB. WE DID— High Visibility patrols were conducted at the location to try to offer a presence in the area. In addition, on 25th July a Panna football and Xbox youth engagement event was organised. This was to try and promote sensible use of the park and for our officers to engage with the young people. Over 35 young people attended and engaged with local officers.

Memories of Chester in the 1930s A film night, showing Chester as it was in the 1930s will be held on Wednesday 20th September, 7.30pm, at Lache Community Centre, Hawthorn Road. Tickets on the door ÂŁ1. The event is organised by Lache and Westminster Park Local History Group. Call 679791 for more information. Model citizens are right on track Chester Model Railway Club are holding an exhibition and open day on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th September at Saltney Community Centre. Visitors will get the chance to see six layouts, including one you can control, from 10am-4pm on the Saturday and 10am-3pm on the Sunday. There are also trade stands and displays about club activity at the centre on Sandy Lane, Saltney. Back in 1951 there were probably few who thought that the club would still be going strong nearly 70 years later. However, despite many setbacks along the way, including being given just three weeks to vacate the premises some years ago, they are now going from strength to strength and are proud to possess their own clubrooms. Several well know sections of British railways are being reconstructed in miniature form at the Saltney club. The main aim of our club is to bring people together of all ages and abilities, who have a common interest in modelling railways of various scales and gauges. They cater for all, from those just starting up to more advanced modellers, so plenty of help and encouragement is available. Club night is Monday from 8pm to 10pm. Admission to the open day is ÂŁ3. Gardening has always been my passion I have been a gardener for as long as I can remember, and sowed my first packet of Marigold seeds in my parents’ garden when I was four years old. I went straight from School at 18 to study for a degree in Horticulture and graduated four years later in 1997 from Wye College, University of London. I worked in several different roles in the horticulture industry after graduating (I’ve also worked in recruitment and art sales), but all along I have always wanted to plant beautiful gardens. I set up Tim Does Gardens in 2016 after studying for a year at Kew Gardens and have been creating beautiful gardens in South West London for the last year. I moved to Chester at the start of July this year and have expanded my practice to include Cheshire and the surrounding area. I specialise in adding plants to your garden to give you the dream garden you have always wanted. My gardens look wonderful in every season, even in Winter! I am available to give you advice, add a whole planting scheme or a single border if you prefer. Please get in touch and we can discuss your garden!

TESTIMONIALS Tim is reliable, makes excellent recommendations, sticks to budgets and does great work for me. My garden stayed lovely until much later in the year than usual and I am now looking forward to the spring planting in a couple of weeks. My garden will be a pleasure to behold for most of the year thanks to Tim.

Tim has been doing my garden for over a year now and I would highly recommend him. He is hard working and does a fantastic job, and he really knows his stuff. Tim is one of the most knowledgeable gardeners I know (had 4 previously). If you need your garden to bloom and look good, then I would highly recommend Tim.

Tim has helped me again in my garden recently with a new planting scheme. I thoroughly recommend using Tim, he has a real passion and knowledge of gardening and garden design. He is head and shoulders above another gardener I used and he has helped me to create a beautiful garden. I really recommend him!

CLEANSING OILS - THE NE Skincare advice with Jane Bryant, from the Hough Green Clinic

CLEANSING is the foundation for a healthy skin. Oil cleansing is a pure and simple regime that dissolves facial oil congested with bacteria, dead skin cells, dirt and build-up and replaces it with fresh, clear, vibrant plant oils without over-drying or overstripping the skin. Amazingly it can be used on ALL skin types, even those suffering from acne outbreaks. Surely, you are thinking why would you add MORE oil to an oily skin? The answer is that oil attracts oil. The oil also tricks the sebaceous glands into thinking they have produced the said oil, so they do not produce any more!

NEW BUZZ IN CLEANSING A cleansing oil really cleans the pores of any dirt and bacteria, leaving it really clean and keeping it hydrated. It benefits all skin types due to cleansing, hydrating, plumping the skin and moisturising qualities. It leaves the skin feeling supple without being tight. At Hough Green Clinic we highly recommend our Vitage Essential Cleansing Balm. We are using if in all our facials. It is the first cleansing balm to contain manula oil which effectively revitalises, boosts cellular activity, hydrates and repairs the skin. Natural Manula oil is a concentrated source of Vitamin C and E and rich in Omega 9 and 6 which balances, brightens and nourishes the skin. It is a lightweight multi-tasking balm that melts away all make-up leaving the skin refreshed, healthy and hydrated. It contains soothing rose and neroli fragrance and can also be used as a relaxing massage oil. Bitter

orange gently tightens and tones; almond oils enriched with Vitamin E, A and B to seal in moisture, and grape seed oil and rose hip oil to hydrate. As a stand alone it is a beautiful moisturiser, but add a few drops of water and it becomes a luxurious creamy rich cleanser that is massaged well into the skin for a few minutes and then washed off with the complimentary face cloth that is soft brushed cotton on one side and muslin on the other. Vitage Essential Cleansing Balm retails at £28. During the month of September Hough Green Clinic is offering it at the special price of £25. The PTA has been actively fundraising over a number of years to help provide these changes for the school. The children will have the opportunity to walk the golden mile, perform on a stage, build dens using weaving sticks and use the fantastic goal and basketball nets. Activities at the fair included an obstacle course, beat the goalie, make a stone friend and face painting. There was also singing by the reception children and Year 2 danced round the maypole.

HANDBRIDGE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

Handbridge litter pick date The HCA will be organising a second litter pick in Handbridge 10am-2pm Saturday 9th September, in order to start the new school term with a proactive focus on taking care of our area. On this day we will also be holding an informal surgery for residents wishing to discuss any issues in the area; further details will be shared on the community notice board nearer the time. Interested residents should also stay tuned for updates on the arches renovation project which is ongoing: please visit our Handbridge Community Association Facebook page, follow @HandbridgeCA on Twitter and @ handbridgecommunity on Instagram for up-todate event details, or feel free to attend our next meeting at The Carlton Tavern: 6.30pm on Tuesday 5th September.

CHAIRWOMAN STEPS DOWN At the recent AGM, attended by Lord Mayor Razia Daniels, gave HCA members a chance to reflect on a productive and exciting year, and to welcome new faces as we move forward. Chairwoman Linda Long thanked volunteers for their efforts on the various projects and events which have taken place since last summer; highlighting the fact that our profile within the community had risen significantly in this time! Not least due to the consistent effort of Debbie Miller who has increased Facebook followers threefold in the last year. Sadly, Linda also announced that she would be stepping down as Chair. John Worden, of St George’s Crescent, was voted in as the new chair of the HCA and congratulated by members.

FINANCES Treasurer Graham Gordon gave a positive report on the HCA finances, revealing that the various fundraising strands from this year have raised £1300 for the charity, which will go towards our 2018 major environmental project: renovating the arches. Of particular success has been the purchase of the vintage popcorn machine, which has featured at many local events and can also be hired out to residents or other community 26 To advertise call 350398

groups. Furthermore our unique ‘Handpicked in Handbridge’ printed shopping bags have also sold steadily throughout the year to contribute to our cause. The HCA would like to thank all local residents and businesses who have supported us in any way over the past year.

FUTURE EVENTS The positivity was continued in a glowing report by secretary Julie Rowland, who listed the activities and events we have been involved in for 2016-2017. With a range of family-friendly events including the Halloween party, Christmas event and Easter party as well as attendance in support of Hoole and Westminster Park community events, every month has had at least one achievement to celebrate. She felt that one of our most successful projects had been the community litter pick in April, which had a very positive response from local people. It was suggested that the HCA should organise a similar event every quarter and should focus our energies on grassroots projects such as this, which will engage the Handbridge community in improving their environment. Lord Mayor Daniels seconded this, and warmly congratulated the HCA on a very productive year.

Woman fined for dumping rubbish A Handbridge woman has been ordered to pay fines totalling £1,660 after being prosecuted for fly-tipping by Cheshire West and Chester Council. Samantha Elizabeth Crawford (42), of Meadow Place, was prosecuted for the fly-tipping of 17 bags of domestic waste in the garden of another householder in the area. An investigation was started in April 2016 when the householder returned from a weekend away to find the bags had been left in the passageway of his property to the side of the garage. When Regulatory Services Officers examined the bags six pieces of evidence were obtained. Despite two letters requesting an interview with Miss Crawford and also visits to her home, Miss Crawford made no contact with Regulatory Services Officers regarding the matter. Chester Magistrates’ Court imposed fines and costs totalling £1,660. Miss Crawford received a fine of £660 for the fly-tipping offence and was also ordered to pay costs of £940 and a victim surcharge of £60. Miss Crawford did not attend court and has 28 days to pay. The Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Councillor Karen Shore said: “Following on from previous successful prosecutions, hopefully this case will act as a deterrent to potential offenders and make them think twice before fly-tipping waste. “Sadly, some people still think they can dispose of rubbish wherever they want causing problems for residents and draining Council services.”

Pirates and plundering in Geoff’s latest novel For his seventh novel Geoff Nelder has plundered a shocking true crime on a grand scale in a favourite British holiday spot. As a change from his science fiction, the former Queen’s Park High School geography teacher has turned his hand to historical fiction but with a twist. In 1551 pirates abducted 5,000 people from Gozo, one of the islands of Malta. Those that survived the sea journey were sold into slavery, some of the men as galley rowers, women into harems in Constantinople. Those spirits have cried out for revenge for nearly 500 years and in Geoff’s Xaghra’s Revenge they get it. The book is available as a Kindle ebook and as a paperback from Amazon. It’s the only book with that title so it is easy to find. Anti-social behaviour POLICE have stepped up patrols following reports of young people causing anti-social behaviour around primary schools in the Lache. PCSO Crocombe has visited the location to offer a presence and engage with the youths in an attempt to reduce the trouble.

Over the next few pages you can learn about some of the open days that will be running across the area during the autumn months. Open days are so important because they can show parents much more than a report or a school league table. You get to meet staff, ask questions, see the facilities and see how the school operates. Looking for the right school is like searching for the perfect home. It’s only when you step inside that you know if it’s right for you and your child. Overleigh Roundabout September 2017

Firs School Chester Celebrates Popularity of Fir Cones Provision for two year olds

Independent pre-school and primary education for boys and girls 2-11

The Firs School Chester is delighted that since opening the Fir Cones, a new two year old provision, in February, they have been welcoming lots of new pupils to the school. Building on the success and experience of the Pre-School Kindergarten the school now caters for 2-11 year olds. This all year round provision for two year olds offers wrap around care 7:45-6pm (if required) and is located in the dedicated space within the Pre-School Kindergarten building and offers healthy delicious meals prepared on site. The Early Years at the Firs School was recently a finalist for a national Independent School’s Association award for outstanding quality. Lucy Davies, Head teacher at The Firs School comments; “We are delighted to have been

nominated for this prestigious ISA Award and are very proud of our teachers and children. We pride ourselves on inspiring children to learn and we believe these early years are critical in encouraging children to love to learn. The judging process is very thorough and evidence can be wide- ranging and includes an inspection of the school along with evidence of innovation in provision.” The ISA Awards celebrate those making remarkable strategic and financial contributions to independent schools across the UK and provides the benchmark for the sector as a whole. All shortlisted schools can demonstrate value for money to their parents.

New headmistress appointed to the Queen’s School The Governors of The Queen’s School are delighted to announce the appointment of a new Headmistress from January 2018. Following a rigorous recruitment process, Miss Lyndsay Hilton has now been appointed to the role. Miss Hilton joins Queen’s from Exeter School in Devon, which was recently rated Excellent in every category by ISI inspectors and where she currently oversees the highly successful academic and co-curricular programmes as Assistant Head. After a successful career in the chemical industry, Lyndsay moved into teaching in 2004 and has worked previously in leadership roles within the state and independent sectors. Her appointment follows the announcement that current Headmistress Sarah Clark will move to take up the role of Headmistress of the North London Collegiate School in January 2018. Miss Hilton said: “As someone who has always been passionate about the education of girls, I am delighted and honoured to be named as the new Headmistress of this outstanding school. “I believe that girls should always aim high; they should be inspired, supported and challenged to think and work independently so that they may take their life in whichever direction they choose. “I know that these are also the values of The Queen’s School and I am excited to be leading the school’s future, working closely with staff, pupils and parents to build on its current success.” As well as being a regular open water swimmer and climber, Lyndsay is also a keen adventurer and has previously been selected to take part in a scientific research expedition to Antarctica with the Fuchs Foundation. She will join the school as Mrs Hilton-Lang following her wedding in the summer. Chair of Governors Mrs Marion Ardron said: “We were looking for someone who has a rare mix of qualities, skills and experience - and in Lyndsay we have found it. “Sarah Clark has been an excellent Headmistress and has developed the school into a modern, dynamic learning environment for able girls to thrive and develop. We look forward to working with Lyndsay to build on this legacy.”

Enjoy the challenge...

Girls thrive at The Queen’s School because we value them as individuals, inspiring, supporting and challenging them to excel. Come along to our Open Morning to find out more. Abbey Gate College celebrates 40 Years with special gala concert In July, Chester based independent school Abbey Gate College hosted a special Gala Concert as it marked its 40 years anniversary. As part of the concert, 75 past choir members joined the current choir producing a spectacular sound of 140 voices. The concert was directed by Mr Stewart Smith (right, above) who is retiring after 39 and a half years as Director of Music. During this time, he has led a thriving music department with many of his former pupils progressing to careers in opera, music production and cathedral music. At the concert, the audience also enjoyed performances from the Infant and Junior School choir, instrumentalists, and vocalists. The choir has sung in most English cathedrals including London’s St Paul’s Cathedral, where they will return to in April 2018. The choir has also toured to various locations including France, Belgium (Menin Gate), St Mark’s Venice, Germany, Italy, Holland, Denmark and the west and east coast of the USA on two occasions. The concert also welcomed the new Head of Music, James Andrews (right, below) who, as well as being a former pupil of the College, is an ex-Head Chorister of Chester Cathedral and a graduate of the Birmingham Conservatoire. He begins his post in September 2017. For videos of the night’s performances go to the Abbey Gate College YouTube channel.
