What’s lurking the Meadows? AN event has taken place to find out the water wildlife in ditches on Chester’s Meadows. Friends of the Meadows staged the event with support from Cheshire West and Chester Council. Titled ‘What lurks beneath’ species present included sticklebacks and common newts which indicate a healthy habitat on this important green space. Handbridge Park Councillor Razia Daniels said: “People of all ages and several families took part and it was such a success that it may become a regular event. “Also Council Countryside Ranger Paul Taylor has logged the different species onto a data base for the management plan for the Meadows.” Rhiannon Taylor and Julie Rose from Friends of the Meadows survey the water wildlife in ditches on the Meadows. Annual warning about river swimming THE council is warning about the dangers of swimming in the River Dee. The move follows a teenage girl being rescued by the river patrol boat after getting into difficulties in the river and suffering exhaustion. The river has some fast currents and high levels of river traffic - with commercial craft, motor boats and rowers making swimming in the river a dangerous occupation due to swimmers being hard to spot. Cllr Lynn Riley, said: “It’s tempting to want to cool off in the river during these sunny days but swimmers really need to be aware of the dangers that the water presents. “The main problem is that swimmers sit very low in the water, and can often not be seen by boats. They are even less visible to rowers, who face away from the direction they are travelling in. “The Council has also recently been made aware of the use of jet skis on the river, which is in contravention of the river byelaws and presents a very serious danger to swimmers.”

EARLY autumn is one of the most spectacular seasons for colour with hot reds, orange, yellow, blue and shades of pink to brighten our gardens. Top of the list of flowers are Dahlias, if you can keep the slugs at bay. They are superb for giving flamboyant flower shapes and colours and range from tall (2m ) to small (50cm) so there is one for all situations. They need a sunny place and moist but well drained soil so heavy clay and dry soils are out with loamy soils preferred. They grow from tubers which should be lifted in late autumn and the foliage cut off then stored in a cool dry place over winter. A less well know plant for sunny positions are Caryopteris clandonensis – a small delicate shrub (1m tall)
that will thrive in sunny well drained soil. Sandy soils are ideal but avoid heavy clay. They have small grey green leaves and clusters of light blue flowers in September. Another favourite are the Asters with many daisy flowers in shades of pink and lilac. The classic Aster Frikartii Monch has the lilac flowers over a period of weeks. Well drained but moist soil and sunny place is best for these perennials. Start harvesting apples and pears. Apples are ready when you lift the apple gently and the stalk breaks off easily. If you have to tug at the apple, it is not ripe and should be left on the tree. You can sow seeds of winter lettuce, lambs lettuce, land cress, rocket and spinach in early September for harvesting in winter and spring although the winter
lettuce is not ready to eat until spring. Cover with a cloche or fleece in cold weather. Lawns can be scarified in September which will remove mounds of moss and dead leaves – it’s amazing how much comes out! Then reseed bare areas or patch with turf. If you would like to visit gardens for ideas, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Mount Pleasant Gardens at Kelsall are always worth visiting with formal and informal areas packed with a huge range of plants, trees, shrubs and ponds. Paths ramble down the terraces with sculptures set in the landscape. It is open on 6th and 7th September.

use topical skin care that specialise in free radical protection and contain antioxidants. These will assist in the replacement of lost and damaged glycans to restore dermal volume. Skin care containing high levels of Vitamin C is recommended as it is a potent antioxidant that rejuvenates the skin. Lactic Acid is a key ingredient in the ight against glycation as it stimulates the skin to produce more of its own Glycan, Hyaluronic Acid. At Hough Green Clinic our PRIORI(R) skin
care products are based on lactic acid and antioxidants Vitamins A, C and E in the ight against Glycation. Our Lactic Acid Peels work deep into the dermis to stimulate the production of new Glycans helping to produce more collagen and greatly hydrate the skin. This plumps out the skin giving it radiance and reduces the visible signs of lines and wrinkles. Jane Bryant, Advanced Skin Health Specialist The Hough Green Clinic Telephone 01244 680414

A BUTCHER’S BLOG with Bruce Edge, from Ernest W.Edge & Son Butchers, Handbridge
Local butcher explains why competing with the big superstores is like.....
DAVI A D AND GOLIATH! WHY Y should the general public use a high street butcher? There are many reasons.
sausage, slice of bacon, or even one egg. This is not possible to buy in any superrmarket.
1. Provenance is a very big one. Traceability from farm to fork. Meat sourced locally from the surrounding countryside supporting local farmers and the local rural economy. Millions of tonnes of supermarket meat is sourced from abroad every year with no bene it to our rural communities whatsoever.
6. Price. Now this is where I get on my soap box! How cheap are supermarkets? Not very. The illusion is cheap but the reality is very different. Years ago they were cheap and had competition on the high street from butchers but in the last thirty years butchers shops have shut in their hundreds. According to the red meat industry forum only between 12-15% of Beef, Lamb and Pork in the UK is sold through traditional butchers and approximately 70% of all meat sales including Chicken are made in supermarkets. Supermarkets do have some expenses that the high street butcher doesn’t . Firstly they employ agents to source their meat for them. Transport costs delivering right across the country. Processing and packaging costs and nationwide advertising costs. My local abattoir is eight miles away which is not only cheaper on fuel but is far better for the animal (and a smaller carbon footprint).
2. Quality. Does anyone genuinely think that supermarket meat is better than a high street butchers? I would be surprised. For example, the twenty-eight day aged beef that I sell as standard rather than a special is not even available in supermarkets. Space does not allow me to give a hundred other examples in this Blog. 3 Freshness. Meat prepared freshly on the day by staff you know and trust, who know you. As opposed to meat prepared in a factory, days earlier then pumped full of water and preservatives. Then dispatched all around the country around various stores to be opened by shop assistants rather than butchers and then inally placed on a shelf with a ten day shelf life? 4. Service. I wou o ld like to o thi think nk tha thatt an any y tr trad adit itio iona nall bu b tch her would d kn know more about their products than a shop assi as sist si sttant. ant. Price matching or price ϔixing?? All the supermarkets openly check each others prices on a daily basis. This would be ine if it was all to give the customers a better deal but I know from wholesale prices that on a very regular basis they can charge far less than they actually do but all p ice match pr h at the the sam samee hi h gh pri r ce. Sign warns speeding drivers A NEW speed activated road sign is reminding drivers of the 30 mph speed limit on Eaton Road in Handbridge. The sign was funded by Handbridge Park Councillors Razia Daniels and Neil Sullivan from their Member Budgets. It follows checks carried out by Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Highways Department, which found that many drivers were not slowing down soon enough from 40 mph as they entered the 30mph area. Cllr Daniels said: “This is a busy road with a lot of traffic and it is important to remind drivers to slow down as they approach Handbridge.” Added Cllr Sullivan: “Handbridge has a large number of pedestrians from the schools and college along with local residents, and this sign will remind drivers to keep to the 30 mph speed limit.” Cllrs Neil Sullivan and Razia Daniels by the new road sign in Eaton Road.
