Computer science is no problem for Raka A schoolgirl from Great Sutton has beaten competition from more than 50,000 students to come second in a national computer science competition. Talented Year 7 pupil at The Queen’s School, Raka Chattopadhyay visited the Department of Computer Science at Oxford University to take part in the second round of the UK-wide BEBRAS Computational Thinking Challenge. And the 12-year-old won second place in the Junior Level final. The competition is designed to get students excited about computing and computational thinking. It is a problem-solving contest with questions inspired by topics in computer science. Raka was one of only 53 top-achieving students from across the UK from Years 6-7 who took part in the final challenge before attending lunch and a prize-giving ceremony at Hertford College, Oxford. Raka is also one of 13 pupils from Queen’s who are through to the TCS Oxford Computing Challenge thanks to their performance in the earlier round of the BEBRAS Challenge. Head of Computer Science at The Queen’s School Mr Damian McKeown said: “Competitions such as this test exceptional thinking skills. The questions demand mathematical and computational thinking skills but pupils also need to demonstrate excellent problem solving abilities. “Raka excelled in all areas of the competition. She clearly is a real talent and our warmest congratulations go to her for this superb achievement.” l Pictured: Raka Chattopadhyay being presented with her prize from Professor Peter Millican, an Oxford University Fellow.

LETTER FROM WESTMINSTER by Ellesmere Port and Neston MP Justin Madders Justin Madders, the Labour MP for Ellesmere Port and Neston, and Shadow Health Minister, gives his viewon the takeover of Vauxhall by the Peugeot Group.
Peugeot positivity
We now know that the Peugeot Group has agreed to buy the European section of General Motors which includes Vauxhall motors. Vauxhall employs about 35,000 people in the UK, including 4,500 working at its manufacturing plants in Ellesmere Port and Luton, and at its warehouse and head office in Luton. There are just over 2000 people employed directly at the plant in Ellesmere Port plus many more employed in the area in associated businesses. Whilst there has been a lot of media speculation about the future of the plant and the risk to jobs as a result of this merger which will no doubt have worried people greatly, we should remember that none of this speculation has been based upon any comments made from the new owners at Peugeot who have in fact confirmed that existing production runs will be guaranteed. This means jobs are protected until around 2021 when the current Astra model is expected to be replaced. This in reality is little different to the position we would have been in had GM remained as owners but we should not underestimate the challenge we face in securing production of the next model. On the plus side, there is no doubt that we have some of the most efficient plants in Europe so we are starting from a positive position and we should also not underplay the positive impact on sales that having a U.K. manufacturing base brings. One of the biggest selling points to UK consumers is that Vauxhall is a British brand that supports British jobs. Of course this is a worrying time for everyone affected but it is not a new experience- there have been threats to the plant in the past but they have always been seen off by the Unions, workforce, management and Government working together to ensure the plant remains competitive with the result that we are lucky to have highly-skilled staff here who are amongst the most efficient anywhere in Europe. It is also important to remember that General Motors sell many cars in this country that are built elsewhere in Europe so it remains a hugely important part of their market and it is a big selling point to those customers that they manufacture in this country so whilst there is some uncertainty about our future trading relationships as a result of Brexit, it is in nobody’s interests to get a final deal that puts barriers in the way of the free trading of vehicles and their components. I have had numerous conversations with the Business Secretary Greg Clark and he has always sounded positive about the plant’s track record and prospects and I have of course taken the opportunity to stress to him at every opportunity the need for Government support if it is required. It is unlikely there will be any significant decisions made in the near future so this does gives us an opportunity to obtain commitments from the Government that when the new model is up for consideration that they will do whatever it takes to protect British jobs and secure the next generation of vehicles at the plant. There are a number of things they can do to enhance the competitiveness of the Ellesmere Port plant and I anticipate discussions over the coming weeks and months will focus on what they will be able to do in that regard

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Great Sutton and Little Sutton areas &
Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
FABULOUS SPRING COLOURS THE background of brown and grey that we have had over the last few months of winter have given way to fresh new green leaves on trees and shrubs. In my garden in a north facing area and in full sun I have many self seeded Aquilegia or Grannies Bonnet. These are trouble free plants if your soil remains relatively moist. Slugs seem not to bother them, they don’t take up much space, seed easily and come in a range of colours. The stems will get to 75cm tall and they flower over a long period. Let the flower heads go to seed and shake the dried seeds in the garden then wait for them to germinate. Spring is also the time you will see Aubretia draped over walls and rockeries. They form mats of very low foliage and do best in dry areas on walls or in pots. To keep them looking good for next year, cut back the flowering shoots hard after flowering. Shrubs also get going in April and if you love bright yellow, how about the cheerful Kerria. This produces long stems 2m high studded with single or double bright yellow flowers. It expands by sending out suckers, similar in habit to Raspberry Janet Heath Garden Mentor
canes but if allowed room, will give a splash of colour as you can see from the photo. Cut back old stems after flowering keeping younger stems for next year. Will grow in any soil except light sandy soils. Magnolias are the super stars of spring with their cupped flowers in white or pink. Very hardy trees or large shrubs but as the flowers are damaged by frost and wind they need a site sheltered from early morning sun and strong wind. Soil should be slightly acid or neutral and preferably moisture retentive. Be warned, some can become large, wide trees so go for small varieties such as Susan or Magnolia stellata varieties which are more suitable for smaller gardens. Plenty to get on with in the vegetable garden. If you planted early potatoes, make sure you earth up the new shoots as they show to protect from frost. Plant lettuce, radishes, peas and carrots in the soil under cloches to keep temperatures high enough for germination. Indoors you can plant seeds of tomatoes, marrows and courgettes in pots on a windowsill or wait till May when temperatures are higher.

HEALTH & BEAUTY Summer starts in spring! By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing
Angela Bartlett’s Top Tips for getting Summer- ready Every summer clients rush into the salon for treatments to get them ready for their summer holidays. However, if you plan ahead in Spring you can get much better value for your money and more effective results. April is the month to get started on most Summer treatments: • Hair removal: if you want a long-lasting, more permanent hair removal solution then book your IPL sessions now as they need to be scheduled one month apart. IPL is ideal for removal of strong bikini line, leg and underarm hair to give you summer freedom from shaving or waxing. However, if you want to opt for waxing this is the month to get started on that too. Getting several waxes in before your holiday will give you a much better finish for your final ‘holiday wax’. • Feet: sandal-ready feet take time to achieve; booking a pedicure a couple of days before your holiday may not be enough. Hard skin, cracked heels and other foot imperfections take time to address with regular treatment and home care help. Come in and let us take a look at your feet to assess what may be needed before you break out your sandals! • Tans: As with feet, preparation is key. Tans look better on soft, smooth skin so regular body exfoliation & hydrating treatments will give you a much better finish to your tan. Always have a patch test at least 48 hours in advance for tanning products to ensure that you are not allergic to the products and to ensure you will be achieving the shade that you want. • Figure improvement: We’ve all been there! You take out your summer clothes only to find that they no longer fit! Or that the tone of your skin on your legs doesn’t look the same as it did twenty years ago. BioSlimming treatment is fantastic for figure improvement. Sensoria was voted best BioSlimming Salon of the Year for the results achieved, but it is not a miracle cure in one treatment. BioSlimming sessions need to be scheduled one week apart for at least six weeks, so depending on when your holiday is, you may need to start now. For an easy to follow guide on how and when to book your sessions download the Summer Ready Beauty Plan on the blog section at www.sensoriabeauty.co.uk

Is drink making you fat? Did you know that drinking five pints of lager every week can add up to 44,200 kcals per year, many people accompany their drinks with snacks and nibbles adding to extra calories, don’t forget the late night kebab and maybe a fry up for good measure in the morning and it’s no wonder people feel bloated, fat and concerned about their weight. As some people stay away from the pints and opt for wine as a ‘healthier option!’ little do you know that two large glasses of wine can not only put you over the limit but also adds another 370kcals approximately to your daily allowance. Drinking every night can become the norm for some people, the tea is on and the first thing they do is reach for a glass of wine. Doing this will not only add the above calories equating to an extra 2590 kcals per week, it will leave you feeling dehydrated, lethargic and craving unhealthy snacks. As well as the extra calories you consume from drinking, it also affects your health. The warnings are constantly being stated, but if you haven’t heard the disadvantages of drinking to your health... l Mouth, neck and throat cancers can be up to 3-5 times more likely l High risk drinkers consuming 8 units a day can be 3-10 times more likely to develop liver cirrhosis. l High blood pressure Women can be higher risk of breast cancer The list goes on, so what can you do to break this cycle, improve your health and get trimmer. l Set yourself a target of cutting down, ie I’ll only have a drink on weekends l Tell family and friends you are cutting down and ask for their support l Get active, attending classes of an evening breaks the cycle of eating and drinking and chances are you won’t feel like a drink after you have worked hard at your local fitness class. l Stay hydrated between drinks, alternate between an alcoholic drink and a soft drink, lime and soda has no calories and is perfect to quench your thirst. l Set a budget, allow yourself a smaller amount to spend on drink this way once it’s gone, its gone!
The short term benefits of cutting back on drink, will happen almost straight away, feeling less tired, having more energy, skin will look better, you will stop gaining weight, fitness will improve. The long term benefits of cutting back on drink you can expect to feel in better moods, have better sleep, boosted immune system, healthier body and mind and overall although some damage can’t be undone from excessive drinking, stopping can prevent it from getting worse. So what are you waiting for? Opt for something different to do tonight and see how breaking the habit can make you feel better! l a can of standard lager, beer or bitter – 1.8 units l a pint of standard lager, beer or bitter – 2.3 units l a small glass of wine (125ml) – 1.5 units l a large glass of wine (250ml) – 3 units l a measure of spirits (25ml) – 1 unit

Unit 20 - Providing a bigger, better customer experience for the performance car owner As probably one of the UK’s leading independent VAG Group specialists, Unit 20 has become the last word in first class performance car know-how. Recommendations have come so highly regarded in fact, that some of its customers travel hundreds of miles just for a service. The attention to detail and superior understanding of high performance vehicles are the key to Unit 20’s success according to Martin Adams, owner of Unit 20. “People want quality,” he says, “which isn’t necessarily a main dealer philosophy. We’ve worked on these machines for over a decade – servicing, repairing and tuning high performance vehicles, including Audi RS, R8 and S models, Bentley GT Continentals and Lamborghini models. The simple truth is, we’ve become known for our quality of workmanship and outstanding value for money.” And it shows. Unit 20’s success is very apparent of recent weeks, as Martin and his expert team of technicians turned their hands to something quite different. The mammoth task of moving all the gear from their small busy unit on the Clayhill Industrial Estate in Neston on the Wirral Peninsula, to Fiveways House just a stone’s throw away – increasing Unit 20’s space
from 1,100sq ft to a gargantuan 5,100sq ft. Martin tells us: “Bigger premises were never in the business plan, but as time’s gone on, staying small has become less of an option. Our customer portfolio has grown exponentially and now we owe it to our customers to be able to provide the kind of service they’ve become accustomed to – with a few nice surprises.” The bigger, brand new premises boasts state-of-the-art facilities to ensure only the best equipment is used to service, repair and tune customers’ cars. And for customers, they’ll be welcomed by a new reception area and refreshments lounge. Martin concluded: “We’re all very excited by the move, the new tech, a brighter, bigger space and the start of something bigger. But we’re equally excited to show it all off to our valued customers – old and new – whilst providing them with the continued quality they deserve, in an environment to match.” l To find out more about how Unit 20 can help you, simply call 0151 336 6888. Or pop in for a coffee at:Fiveways House, Liverpool Road, Clayhill Industrial Estate, Neston, Wirral CH64 3RU.
