Be a responsible dog lover I am a Registered Veterinary Nurse and since getting my first puppy, Harington, I’ve realised that whilst many people love dogs, they don’t necessarily behave responsibly and considerately around them, writes Beth Brant. My top tips for interacting with dogs whilst out and about: l Ask To Pet. Many people are willing to put their hands towards an unknown dog with an unknown temperament, even telling their children to do so. The ‘Ask To Pet’ campaign encourages people to ask if they can stroke a dog before doing so for the safety of the person, welfare of the dog and consideration of the owner. In the eyes of the law, a dog is someone’s possession - you don’t have the right to stroke them without asking. l Dog walking etiquette. If you have no voice control over your dog, they should not be off lead. Don’t allow your dog to run up to dogs who are on lead. There is a reason why they are on a lead and it is unfair to put the dogs and people in a potentially dangerous situation. One of the most common causes for dog-related aggression is being ran at by other dogs. Don’t let your dog cause another a lifetime of worry - put them on lead until the coast is clear. Don’t forget that dogs out of control can be reported under the Dangerous Dogs Act. l Feeding treats. Never feed a dog a treat without asking the owner first. Dogs can have dietary sensitivities which can be upset by just one treat. Following these tips will ensure you are a responsible and considerate dog lover and allows everyone to enjoy the lovely places we have here for dog walking. For more information on the ‘Ask To Pet’ campaign, search on Facebook or email me at asktopet@gmail.com.

Prolific thief jailed for three years A career-criminal has been sentenced to three years in prison after stealing high value jewellery from a house in Little Sutton. Larry Berry, 18, of Eccleston Avenue, pleaded guilty to three burglaries and five driving offences at Chester Crown Court. On New Year’s Day Berry forced his way into a family’s home on Trumans Lane, in Little Sutton, by smashing a window at the back of the house with a brick. As he made his way throughout the unoccupied house he stole jewellery including two watches, earrings and two necklaces as well as the keys to an Audi. Berry then drove away from the house in the stolen car. Nine days later, Berry travelled to Oldham where he committed his second burglary, ransacking the house and taking jewellery. On the same day, he carried out yet another burglary at an unoccupied house. Shortly afterwards, the Audi which had been stolen from Little Sutton on New Year’s Day was involved in a collision in Rochdale where all occupants fled the scene. Inside the vehicle were the designer handbags stolen from the Oldham raid. Detective Sergeant Nick Henderson said: “Berry is a selfish career-criminal who spends his time breaking into the homes of families and leaving a trail of destruction behind without a care for how this may impact on them. “In some cases we have been able to return the stolen property to the families affected by Berry’s actions. I hope in some way knowing that Berry has been caught and punished for his crimes will serve as justice for the victims he targeted.”

Promoting responsible parking outside school

Pupils at Whitby Heath Primary School have launched a parent parking charter to help alleviate parking problems outside the school gates. The children have worked with the council’s road safety team, locality officers, local police community support officers and parents to develop the charter, which will challenge the way people travel to school and alleviate problems caused by inappropriate parking. The road safety initiative sees parents, drivers and school visitors make a pledge to reduce congestion and conflict outside school as well as raising awareness of parking safely on surrounding local roads. Headteacher, Gill Morris added: “We are working together to try to resolve some of the parking issues faced outside school at peak times of the school day. The children face some challenging problems when trying to cross the road to school with drivers parking on the yellow zig-zag lines, on pavements and on double yellow lines outside school.” 8 Tel 01244 350398 www.talkaboutpublishing.co.uk

Festival Park regenerated Over recent months Festival Park in Ellesmere Port has seen a variety of environmental improvements and more recently, the replacement of the children’s play equipment. Residents and park users have helped to plan and reshape the park making it a place where families feel safe to bring their children. Festival Park is an important park for the community with the improvements making it an enjoyable place to visit, play or just walk the dog. The work by the council followed concerns about levels of anti-social behaviour including fly tipping, fires and the general condition of the play equipment. Cllr Karen Shore, Mayor of Ellesmere Port said: “Working with the community we have taken significant steps in making the park a welcoming place where families now feel safe to take their children. “Previously Festival Park has been associated with anti-social behaviour rather than for the benefit it can bring to local residents. The redevelopment of the site has injected a new positivity into the area for residents both young and old to enjoy the outdoors on their doorstep. I would like to thank the teams from across the Council for their work supporting our ambitions for these improvements.” Councillor Karen Shore and Councillor Tony Sherlock with Council Officers Councillor Karen Shore and Councillor Tony Sherlock with Council Officers

Great Sutton duo jailed for machete attack Two men who attacked a man with a machete in Ellesmere Port have been jailed for 18 years. Tommy Mattison, 20, and Mark Davison, 21, both pleaded guilty to section 18 assault and possession of a bladed article. Mattison, of Oliver Lane, Great Sutton, and Davison, of Acre Road, Great Sutton, appeared at Chester Crown Court where they were both jailed for nine years. The pair were also handed indefinite restraining orders which prevent them from having any contact with the victim. The charges related to an incident that took place in November when the victim, a 31-year-old local man, was cycling on Princes Road, Ellesmere Port. Mattison and Davison were also cycling in the area and, after a verbal altercation with the victim; he was slashed with a machete, causing extensive injuries. Both offenders then fled the scene and were arrested and charged after a detailed investigation by detectives from Ellesmere Port CID. Detective Sergeant Graeme Carvell said: “This was a vicious targeted assault which left the victim with serious injuries. “Mattison and Davison are both dangerous individuals and we hope that the people of Ellesmere Port feel reassured now that they are behind bars. Violent crime will not be tolerated and the sentence handed down by the courts reflects that. Repair & Servicing “We hope that this case will act as a deterrent to other potential offenders and will send out Quality Assured Service from a a strong message that such behaviour is not British Horological Institute acceptable. And you can even spend-a penny by sampling the fabulous new Geberit Aquaclean! Finally, complete the picture by choosing from a selection of their stunning tiles and you really be able to create a ‘tried and tested’ space to be proud of. Heart of Irby Village Dave and the team have always supported the local community in Irby and the surrounding areas, and played a part in the life and soul of the village and love being there,

Dave commented “We recognised Irby as a great place to stay and grow in, we like the space we are in. We’ve taken on 2 apprentices and making this significant investment into the building can only improve it.” “Our new showroom will be completely unique for the Wirral, and will revolutionise the experience of buying a new bathroom for our customers. We want nothing more than people to come in and try them out for themselves, even down to taking your shoes off and feel the under floor heating, you can even take a shower if you are game, we don’t mind!” And with service and quality and experience that is second to none, your will be sure to find your slice of Bathroom Bliss, right here in the heart of Irby.

A You don’t have to spend a vast amount of money to purchase a Geberit toilet. There are also less expensive models in the range such as the Geberit AquaClean 4000. This compact loo seat is designed to replace your existing loo seat and is straightforward to install, as it fits on the existing seat.

www.designpvcu.co.uk

The Geberit AquaClean range is comfortable and stylish too. And with a model to suit every style of home, it would make a perfect addition to your new spa-like bathroom.

176/178 Pensby Road (opp. Harvest Mouse) Heswall CH60 7RJ Email: sales@designpvcu.co.uk

Q Should I be concerned about how much water is used in spray-function toilets?

A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply.

For more information

To find out more information about the Geberit AquaClean range, call into Wirral Wetrooms in Irby Village and try it out for yourself! www.i-love-water.co.uk.

OPENING HOURS: Mon-Fri 9am-4.30pm, Sat 9am-1pm

Q I’m really interested in buying a Geberit toilet with a spray function, but I have heard they’re very expensive. Are there any more affordable alternatives?

HEALTH & BEAUTY By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing

Summer skincare regime By Angela Bartlett, Owner Sensoria Beauty Q. Should my facial skincare cleansing regime change in the summer? A. During the summer months your cleansing routine will need to address the increased use of sunscreen and increased production of sweat and sebum (oil). Ensure you use an oil-based cleanser or balm to breakdown the SPF’s and thoroughly remove natural secretions that have accumulated on your skin over the course of the day. Follow up with a gentle, water-based cleanser to give you squeaky clean, glowing skin. We recommend Dermalogica Pre-Cleanse Balm and Sensoria are giving away free water-soluble cleansing samples with every purchase; just bring this article into the salon to claim your freebie! Q. Why is vitamin C good for skin?

Angela Bartlett is a highly qualified Advanced Aesthetician with over 34 years of experience in the beauty and holistic industries. She is a past Chairman for BABTAC & CIBTAC, teacher and International Examiner. Her expertise is currently called upon to judge national competitions, the provision training and quality treatments.

A. Vitamin C can be described as a ‘skin care powerhouse’. Applying skin care products with vitiamin C in will brighten, firm and defend your skin. From age spots, to loss of elasticity and other premature ageing skin conditions Vitamin C can help and should be an essential part of your skin care regime. Formulations of Vitamin C products vary widely so always choose one that has a highly bioavailable form of vitamin C to ensure you get the best penetration and results. GARDENING BY JANET WEEDS

After the dry spell.....

A

fter the dry period in early summer that caused some plant to die, many late summer perennials will be flowering less.

Plants that enjoy the dry weather in late summer include Echinops ritro or Globe Thistle. They will grow to 1.5m tall and have soft thistle shaped leaves with tall stems bearing golf ball sized blue flowers. The need support but do well at the back of borders in full sun and well drained soils. Another blue plant is the Eryngiums or Sea Holly. These are shorter plants, to 75cm tall with teazle like blue spiky flowers. They also love full sun and well drained soils. Veronicas are perennials with small and tall varieties in pink, white and blue which are good for sunny positions but need more moisture. Another good plant for sun is Verbena bonariensis which has tall stiff stems topped with heads of small purple flowers. Again, it takes up little space in the ground and lasts for weeks. Not hardy in severe winters but it will self seed. Those of you that have permanently damp soil, late summer is great for flowers. In August the purple loosestrife, Lythrum salicaria has tall spikes of magenta pink flowers. A quirky plant for those with damp soil and space for it to wander, try Lysimachia clethroides (up to 60cm) with its white foxtail flowers. They remind me of meerkats on the lookout! If you have an established hellebore plant in the garden, look under the large leaves and you may find small seedlings already growing. Pot them up or move them out into more space so they can grow on. Keep beans, courgettes, pumpkins and squashes well watered in summer. Once the squashes and pumpkins have grown to size the foliage should die off gradually. Keep them outside to ripen the skin and keep any foliage off the ripening pumpkins. If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Laskey Farm, Thelwell is open on 11th and 12th August with many interesting features including a series of pools and water features with superb poolside planting, herbaceous borders and a maze of grasses and prairie style planting. Abbeywood near Delamere is open on 12th August. This garden has a stunning exotic garden full of colour, formal gardens leading out into huge borders filled with sweeping planting of grasses and perennials.

Hayley’s health and fitness

Losing the baby weight Having a baby is undoubtably one of the biggest things that will change your body. Not only will you gain fat but many find their overall shape changes. So once baby is out and reality hits it no wonder many women are anxious to get back to their old self. With celebs “bouncing back” in only a few weeks what are they doing that the majority of us aren’t to get back to their former selves? I think the misconception is that breast feeding will help you lose weight on its own. Yes, breast feeding burns calories, but in order to get a good supply of milk you must be having enough calories to keep the supply up. You’ll need an additional 400-500 calories to ensure a good supply if you’re trying to diet as well as breast feed many women feel they are fighting a losing battle. They often become over tired, snack on unhealthy food as they can’t be bothered cooking and become feeling sluggish and fatigued. The trick is to eat little and often and fill up on healthy high protein foods but with an adequate supply of carbohydrates to keep you going. Carbohydrates need to be the good unrefined ones, snack on raw veg and humus as snack, or some rice cakes and peanut butter perfect for on the go. It’s important to not get hung up on how quick everyone else losing their baby weight. Many factors will affect how quick you lose them LBS. Some people only gain a small amount of weight during pregnancy where as some ladies gain 4-5 stone. In reality the more weight you gained the more time it may take to get back off. Taking baby out for brisk walks is a good way to start getting back to your current state. Gentle exercise once you have been given the ok from the doctor is perfect. But ensure you build up gradually. I had very little time off training after giving birth and was in fact still trampolining (yes, it is safe) right up until the night of going into labour, yet once given birth I was so unfit even trying to jog on treadmill. I built it up

gradually, listened to my body and did a little at a time. Over 4-6 weeks the difference was noticeable and what was once a struggle began to again feel easy. Over doing it though especially after a c section can have a negative effect. Give your body enough time to recover, this doesn’t mean waiting months and months (there is no excuse for leaving it this long) but start doing little bits as soon as everything is healed and you feel well enough to go out. Exercise in itself will make a positive effect to your overall mind set, helping reduce post-natal depression and boost endorphins making you feel better in yourself. Remember to eat good foods and drink plenty of water, your body has been through a major trauma, so eating the right foods to help it repair is crucial. How can you expect to get the fat off when Chinese and takeaways are your evening meals? Fruit, veg, lean meats and complex carbs are essential for maintaining a healthy diet. Exercise when pregnant, years ago no one really knew enough about it to say it was safe. So as soon as you found out you were expecting everything stopped. Yet now its encouraged to keep active during your pregnancy. Not only will you help prevent diabetes, high blood pressure, it will keep you fit and more likely to a quick and easier birth. If you have always been into keep fit, stay at what you enjoy as long it’s not a contact sport and keep it low impact. It’s important if you haven’t exercised not to start anything new though as your body isn’t used to it. By staying active you are more likely to get your old shape back in a shorter amount of time. Just listen to your body and always check with your doctor or midwife. Written for Talkabout Publishing by Hayley Ryder Personal Trainer and Class instructor 07551 878786

Summer is here and it’s time to get your outside space in order. Why not give us a call, and we can give you some great ideas to improve your home’s kerb appeal.

Why should you install a Resin Drive? That’s simple; our product naturally drains water through it which means no puddles. Also with a slip resistant surface it provides better traction for tyres and gives more grip for when you walk on it, making your drive a safe place to be!
