6

It’s our favourite time of the year with the Christmas lights up and a general feel-good factor in the air. There are lots of events to keep people busy this month which you can read about on the What’s on pages. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Great Sutton and Little Sutton areas &

Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends

and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Gifts from the ‘Angels’ of Little Sutton all the way to Eastern Europe Children from St Mary of the Angels Catholic Primary School, in Little Sutton, have been busy filling and decorating shoe boxes to be transported to vulnerable children in Romania and the Ukraine. Mr Hughes, head teacher said: “Our families are always very supportive of children and families less fortunate than ourselves. We have had an overwhelming response to our request for filled shoe boxes. We can only imagine what a difference these gifts will make to the children in Eastern Europe.” The school is supporting the shoe box appeal organised by the Rotary club of Ellesmere Port and the T4U. Members from both organisations will transport the gift boxes to Eastern Europe and deliver to children via schools, nurseries and orphanages. Pupils at school will be able to follow the journey across Europe on the internet and are looking forward to seeing hearing about the trip in the new year.

Local photogaphers are picture perfect The Mayor of Ellesmere Port, Cllr Brian Jones, has congratulated the winners of the town annual ‘photographic and all things arty’ competition at a special event. More than 160 entries were received under the five categories of Sport, Recreation and Leisure Time; Education, Skills and Employment; the New and Modern Ellesmere Port; Business and Employment and The Future of Ellesmere Port. Cllr Jones said: “We received so many exciting entries - really highlighting the many fantastic viewpoints the town has to offer through the eyes of the people who live and visit here. “The competition is fantastic and a true accolade to the town. Another award for railway volunteers Little Sutton Railway Station continues to win awards – after being presented yet again with ‘Outstanding’ honours in the North West In Bloom It’s Your Neighbourhood competition. The RHS contest is all about bringing members of the community together to make a positive change to the place they live, work or spend their leisure time. 2014 has seen the Station Friends at Little Sutton and Ellesmere Port stations focusing on the WW1 commemorations as well as the usual gardening and artwork projects including art created by Westminster Primary School pupils and young people from Whitby High School. St Paul’s Councillor Angela Claydon whose ward includes Little Sutton Station said: “It really is a feather in the cap to win the ‘outstanding’ award yet again and is testament to our wonderful Station volunteers who work so hard, providing a warm welcome for visitors and commuters.” Volunteers are always welcome at both stations and volunteers who would like to transform Overpool Station through gardening are particularly welcome at this time. Q Should I be concerned about how much water is used in spray-function toilets?

• A FREE home visit • A FREE written quotation

A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply. Q I’m really interested in buying a Geberit toilet with a spray function, but I have heard they’re very expensive. Are there any more affordable alternatives?

• Fully guaranteed • A large selection of ladders

The site is opposite the former Gas Board land where there is outline planning permission for 280 homes and a business scheme, and also land to the south of the Technology Park on Inward Way where 500 homes are being built. David Thompson from landowner Peel Investment North told Strategic Planning Councillors that it was a good scheme for a prime location in the heart of the Rossmore area. The 120 bed hotel will be five storeys high and plans include a pub or restaurant, a crèche, offices which could be used for possible community health use or a fitness suite, a petrol filling station and a drive through cafe or restaurant. The scheme proposed a total of 278 parking spaces which included 25 disabled spaces and also 50 cycle spaces. Planning officers also recommended approval of the scheme and in a report before Councillors stated that the site was employment land but added: “It is also recognised that the site has been marketed unsuccessfully for several years. “Given these circumstances, it is considered that it would be difficult to justify a refusal of the application on the grounds of loss of employment land.”

Cllr Alan McKie agreed and pointing to numerous job opportunities he said: “I know we talk about industrial but industrial nowadays with technology is probably less employees than this particular development. “Even though it is outline it will actually give us a hotel, those restaurants, crèche. So I just feel it’s one of those things we have got to support.” Cllr Jill Houlbrook said: “I think it will enhance an area which has been left as scrub land for quite some time and it is nice to see, even though we can’t get what was originally planned for there, something actually developed on this area and get the area moving again, and increase employment.” Cllr Angela Claydon backed the plans but said she was concerned about the future design of the hotel. She said: “I know that this is only outline but I think what the real issue will be is what the hotel – as it is to be five storeys high – will look like. You will be able to see it from the motorway; you will be able to see it from the water as well. We do need it to have a really good visual appeal.”

Midwinter Cheer

The end of year is the best time to appreciate the evergreen plants, mainly shrubs and trees. Holly or Ilex is the classic Christmas shrub with dark glossy green leaves and red berries. Frost on the leaves gives them a magical Christmas touch. Hollies prefer a moist, well drained soil so heavy waterlogged clay is not recommended. There are many other evergreen shrubs with cream, yellow and green foliage which always cheer up a garden in winter. Ground cover Euonymus Emerald n Gold and the variety Emerald Gaiety will cover the soil under larger shrubs. Another green and yellow shrub is Elaeagnus x ebbingei Limelight that will grow in sun or shade and

brighten up darker areas in winter. Conifers come into their own in winter and I love the smaller trees with silvery blue foliage. The blue spruce Picea pungens Hoopsii has silvery, ice blue needles and would be suitable for moist but well drained acidic soil. Another conifer with similar coloured foliage is Abies concolor Compacta which is a smaller slow growing tree with silver grey needles. These two smaller trees would look great with Rhododendrons and underplanted with Euonymus to give year round colour. My favourite sight in winter is to see Dogwoods or Cornus with red or yellow coloured bark planted against silver birch with the winter sun giving a glowing colour. Cornus alba Elegantissima is

one of the best with rich red stems in winter and green with cream edged leaves in spring and summer. It is a vigorous grower and will thrive on well drained or heavier soils in sun. Cut the stems down to 30 cms every two or three years to promote new growth and bright red bark. Jobs to do in December are limited. Keep off lawns when frosted as you may cause damage to the grass by treading on it leaving a trail of footprint sized dead grass! Prune shrubs to shape. If you have ordered bare rooted, trees, shrubs or roses plant them out when the weather is dry and the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. If they arrive when conditions are not right for planting, plant them up in pots or heel them in where the soil is well drained.
