Garden centre could disappear for housing PLANS to build houses at the popular Sycamore Park Garden Centre are being considered by councillors. Liverpool-based Riverside Housing Association is looking to build 52 affordable homes at the site on Chester Road, Great Sutton. It’s not the first time that the garden centre has been threatened with demolition. Back in 2006 there was a concerted campaign by local residents to stop 60 houses being built there. This time, a ‘Save Sycamore Park Garden Centre’ group has been started on Facebook. People have also been advised to contact local MP Justin Madders to register their objections. The plans are for 38 two, three and four-bed houses and 14 two-bed flats, which the developers believe will offer the ‘obvious benefits of new affordable housing for the community’. Meanwhile, plans have also been submitted for the demolition of the Sutton pub, formerly known as the Marquis, on Gleneagles Road in Great Sutton. Developers want to build five bungalows and 14 apartments at the site.

More Vauxhall job losses ‘devastating’ - MP The loss of another 250 jobs at Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port plant has been met with dismay by local MP Justin Madders. The Labour MP said: “This is more devastating news for workers in this area and my thoughts are first and foremost with the families of those who will be losing their jobs.” The news comes just three months after the French owners, PSA, announced 400 redundancies. Mr Madders has called upon the government to intervene by creating incentives to encourage suppliers to relocate locally which would have the effect of reducing costs at Ellesmere Port. Vauxhall reaffirmed its commitment to the factory, saying: “The company remains confident in the ability of the Ellesmere Port workforce to deliver the necessary improvements in financial performance.”

Will you be a hospice hero? The Hospice of the Good Shepherd are looking for special individuals and groups of supporters to become Heroes for the Hospice and help them raise the vital funds required to meet the cost of providing free care and support to local people affected by a life limiting illness. The Backford hospice relies mainly upon the generosity and goodwill of the local community to raise the £4 million needed each year to provide their services for free. Have you already decided to take up a challenge, whether it’s a lifestyle changes or a once-in-a-lifetime experiences but haven’t chosen a charity to raise money for please consider supporting your local Hospice. If you are still deciding what to do, take a look at some of the suggested challenges below and if nothing takes your fancy, you can always take part in an event of your choice or set up your own fundraiser fundraising idea

4th March - Chester 10K run; 29th April - Chester Half Marathon; 10th June - Bike Chester; 14th / 15th July - Liverpool Nightrider cycle event; 7th October - Chester Marathon; 8th / 9th Sept - Tough Mudder. You can find details on these events at the hospice website www.hospicegs.com If you would like to find out more about becoming a hospice hero please get in touch on 01244 851 811 or email fundraising@hospicegs. com The Hospice of the Good Shepherd is a local charity which provides dedicated end-of-life care for the people of Cheshire West and Chester and Deeside. It cares for anyone over the age of 18 years old who has had a diagnosis of a noncurable, life limiting illness. However, almost 50% of patients return home from the Hospice after receiving expert care. The hospice receives only around a quarter of its annual £4m running costs from the NHS. It costs £11,000 per day to provide the necessary care.

Christmas tree-cycle a huge success Hospice volunteers collected 947 real Christmas trees from people’s doorsteps to support families with a life-limiting illness. Residents across the CH1, CH2, CH3, CH4, CH65 & CH66 post code areas made a donation for the service which saves them a trip to the skip, raising £10,100 for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd. The Christmas tree-cycle was run with the support of local volunteers and businesses to raise funds much needed funds for the hospice. Members of the local community signed up online to arrange for their tree to be collected and recycled in return for a donation to our charity. The extremely successful event raised over £10,100 for the Hospice, and the team collected nearly double the amount of trees than last year! Justin Caroe, Community Fundraiser at the Hospice, said “It was amazing and overwhelming how much support we received this year. This idea allowed people to get all the pleasure from having a real tree without the annoying bit of taking it to the recycling centre after Christmas and stuffing it in the back of the car when all the needles are dropping off. The average donation ended up being around £10 per tree! People were also so generous with their time volunteering for the service and loaning vans. Without people fundraising donating money through schemes such as our tree collection we wouldn’t be able to carry on providing our services to local people in the community affected by a life limiting illness.”

LETTER FROM WESTMINSTER by Ellesmere Port and Neston MP Justin Madders

My worries about our National Health Service

T

he NHS is one of the greatest achievements of this country with this year being its 70th birthday, but the last few weeks have seen questions raised again about its future with terrible stories emerging of people being treated at a & e in trolleys, in the car park, on the floor and even in a broom cupboard!

There is no doubt that the winter has always been historically the busiest time of year for the NHS but this year feels particularly serious. Indeed, Chris Hopson, Chief Executive of NHS Providers, the body representing frontline trusts said that the NHS is at a “watershed moment and cannot deliver care to the standards required by its constitution with the funding it receives. This follows over 60 A & E Consultants writing to the Prime Minister expressing their concerns, and the Care Quality Commission, the body responsible for ensuring safety standards are met, announcing it was going to suspend its inspections in A & E departments due to the winter crisis. Whilst there is general agreement that the current situation is untenable (unless you are the Prime Minister of Health Secretary who have understandably tried to downplay the issue) there is not so much consensus amongst the politicians about what to do about it. A lack of available beds is one of the key causes

of delays at A&E, as well as patients being treated on hospital corridors and in the back of ambulances waiting outside of hospitals. Independent health think-tank, the King’s Fund reported in September 2017 that the NHS in England currently has fewer acute beds relative to its population than almost any other comparable health system. For me, at the heart of this is the inescapable fact that the NHS has been receiving funding increases of less than 1% a year for the last 8 years and most experts believe the NHS needs increases of around 4% each year to keep pace with increases in demand due to an aging population. The result of this unprecedented financial squeeze which combined with patients who are medically fit to be discharged from acute beds to be cared for in the community not able to go because of cuts in the social care sector means the images we have seen in the last few weeks were sadly inevitable. I do not want the Government to try and ride out the current storm and change nothing; I believe a commitment to returning to funding levels enjoyed in the previous decade will put the NHS on an even keel and secure its future for the next 70 years. The staff, who have been working under incredible pressure in recent times, deserve more support in order to deliver the NHS that most of the public want.

HEALTH & BEAUTY By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing

3 Top Beauty Tips

that you need to take into 2018 with you‌ By Angela Bartlett, Owner Sensoria Beauty 1. Always double cleanse your skin, especially at night. If you are spending time on applying makeup then you should spend the same amount of time removing it. If you skin is not thoroughly cleansed then your following serums or moisturisers cannot do their job properly. Also, these days with the trend for long-wear makeup you can no longer rely on one application of a regular cleanser to clean your skin effectively. 2. Choose pollution-fighting ingredients in your skin care. If you are unsure how much pollution is in your area visit www.skinpollution.com to get up-todate information on pollution levels. Pollution takes a serious toll on your skin, leading to a wide range of skin problems including premature ageing. Choose products with antioxidant ingredients such as vitamins A, C and D and active charcoal to absorb pollutants. 3. Use a face oil below your makeup During the winter months your skin can take on a dullness which an application of highlighter can help to disguise. However, using a face oil beneath your makeup will be far more effective to not only make your skin look better but treat it too. It will help your foundation to blend evenly, keep moisture levels consistent and give a healthy glow. GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

Signs of spring A

t last spring is on the way with plants coming into growth with the lengthening daylight, even if there is frost and snow. Starting with small flowers, grow a drift of snowdrops, either the native single variety or for a change, buy some double snowdrops. As you can see from the photo, the double snowdrop flower is beautiful. Another flower for early spring is the Winter Aconite or Eranthis. This has bright buttercup yellow, glossy flowers on very short stems. Both snowdrops and Aconites prefer a humus rich soil, well drained, usually under larger shrubs or in woodland. Scented shrubs are a joy in winter as they are unexpected but often highly fragrant coming from relatively small flowers. The Winter Box Sarcococca confusa or Sarcococca Hookeriana is a low evergreen (to 80cms) with tiny white flowers, not much to look at but they pack a powerful fragrance which in a small space, will waft on the breeze. Another choice scented shrub is Daphne bholua Jaqueline Postill. Last year I visited Rode Hall to see the snowdrops and they had many of these shrubs in flower. They will grow to 2.5m tall, are evergreen and have clusters of sweetly scented pink flowers (see photo) all over the shrub. Will grow on any well drained but moisture retentive soil but must have shelter from wind and frost. There are some clematis that will flower in mild periods in winter although you have to bear in mind that many have much smaller flowers than the summer varieties. Clematis cirrhosa Jingle Bells or Freckles will flower in early spring. They have small bell shaped flowers in cream and spotted pink with evergreen foliage. These require shelter and a west or south facing position away from frost and with well drained, moisture retentive soil. If you have an apricot or peach growing against a wall or fence do remember to protect the flowers from frost. They flower in late February or early March so to make sure of a crop put a fleece over it when frost is due and remove during the day to allow pollination. Prune Wisteria new stems from last year back to 2 to 3 buds to encourage flowering but leave the fat buds on older wood alone – they should be your flowers for this year! Cut back dead stems from perennials and grasses being careful to avoid damaging any new shoots. 01244 318258 / 07984 627270 Janet Heath janet@gardenmentor.co.uk 26 ToMentor advertise call 01244 350398 www.talkaboutpublishing.co.uk Garden

Hayley’s health and fitness

Will a personal trainer really help me get to where I want to be? The answer is yes if you get the right one! Think of a trainer as your best friend, your worst enemy, your councillor, your motivational speaker, the person you go to when you are about to give in and someone you will be spending a lot of time with!

Ask for a taster session if you don’t know the person, its important you gel! You will be spending a lot of time with your trainer so make sure you are on the same wave length, so you don’t dread your sessions!

Therefore it’s vital you pick someone you get along with.

Be realistic no matter how good of a trainer you get if you’re not working hard outside your training hours you won’t get results, fact! Don’t expect a few sessions in to have a six pack if you’re out every weekend drinking, you get out what you put in,

Your first decision is Male or Female, males firstly don’t be put off by having a female as your trainer. Don’t for one minute think you will be let off lightly or thing will be easier if you get a female as this is NOT the case. As for men training women, a good trainer will work through what you need to work on and devise a plan that will suit you. So it shouldn’t be unachievable and although you will be sore after your first few sessions, don’t feel like guys are just out to ‘beast you’ (the none technical term for working you too hard that you won’t be able to walk’!) You need to think how much time you have to fit this in, whether its 30 min sessions or an hour, you will need to consider childcare, costs, and how long you can do this for? Think how much you want to achieve your goal, personal training is an amazing tool yet you won’t get the results unless you put the effort in. There is no use training then going home and eating crisps and cakes, what’s the point! Your diet is key and alongside a trainer you must be putting the effort in with your healthy eating also. You can’t do one without the other so plan your meals, food prep and don’t go food shopping on an empty stomach.

Gloating arsonist jailed for six years A man who set fire to a house in Capenhurst in an attack deemed ‘deliberate and selfish’ is now facing six years behind bars. Paul Riley, aged 52, of no fixed address pleaded guilty to arson at Chester Crown Court and was sentenced to six years. The court was told how Riley committed his crime in September at a house in Capenhurst after carefully planning his attack. Riley then called his victim shortly after setting fire to her home and gloated about the crime he had just done, telling her ‘your house is on fire’. She returned to find her family home ablaze. Police raced to the address where they spotted Riley near the scene. As he was arrested he look puzzled and told officers ‘but there was no one in the house.’ The court heard how while searching Riley’s room at a hotel in North Wales, officers discovered receipts for the purchase of white

spirit bought the day before the fire. A bottle of white spirit was also found at scene of the crime. On sentencing the judge described Riley’s actions as being clearly ‘deliberate and spiteful’. As well as his prison sentence, Riley was also handed a permanent Restraining Order. Detective Constable Stephen Owens, of Chester CID, said: “Without doubt the consequence of Riley’s crime has been a traumatic ordeal for the victim and her child. “It’s sad to think that a cruel, nasty attack has left the family not only without a home at Christmas but all her child’s memories destroyed in the fire. The permanent restraining order handed to Riley provides reassurance and protection to the victim indefinitely. “The victim and her family have dealt with this admirably and are now rebuilding their lives.”

The Port’s the place to live! A new campaign is set to shine the spotlight on Ellesmere Port as a residential destination. The Ellesmere Port Development Board, in partnership with Marketing Cheshire, has launched ‘The Port’s the Place’ – a promotional campaign that will target home buyers and boost the town’s reputation as a superb place to live. People living in Little Sutton will know about the house building boom in the area with thousands of new homes in the new developments on Ledsham Road and at Netherpool Laura Gilling of Marketing Cheshire, said: “Our new campaign is about getting that message out to even more people in the region, particularly those looking to invest in one of the 2,150 new homes being built between now and 2020.” The Ellesmere Port Development Board is an enterprise team tasked with expanding the town and improving the quality of life of its residents. “One of the first goals is to give people looking to move home access to more online information that shows what the town is really about,” Laura added. “We’ve created a short film with ‘10 reasons to live in Ellesmere Port’ that shines a positive spotlight on the area’s location as a central North West hub as well as its fantastic transport links, schools, leisure facilities and much more.” Land Registry figures show house prices in Ellesmere Port are up 3% on last year and 7% on 2014, yet its homes are still among the best value for money in the area. The town’s forecast investment is £2.8 billion, including £1.2 billion already secured, according to a recent report by Amion Consulting, commissioned by the Ellesmere Port Development Board.
