Teamwork adds some colour to Ledsham Road Ledsham Road will have a splash of colour come spring time, after Ledsham and Manor Action Group and Cheshire West and Chester Council teamed up to plant around 5,000 daffodil bulbs. Staff from the Council’s Streetscene and Localities Teams joined local residents in a community bulb-planting day. The bulbs were planted in Ledsham Road, with the help of the PALS Group (Positive Action for Little Sutton) during the event organised by local resident, Graham Penness. Planting was made easier as the volunteers and officers were blessed with glorious winter sunshine. Ward councillor Cllr Peter Rooney, who is also the current Mayor of Ellesmere Port, provided funds to purchase the bulbs and joined in on the day too. Graham Penness, Chairman of Ledsham and Manor Action Group said: “May I add my personal thanks and those of local residents to everyone for a great team effort - it was really appreciated. Here’s to more similar co-operation in future.”

Brightening up Sutton Way Sutton Way flats will be a riot of colour next spring, thanks to a recent bulb planting event. The Council’s Streetscene and Localities Teams, along with local ward councillor Tony Sherlock, were joined by staff from Plus Dane, Cheshire Constabulary and local residents in Singleton Road and The Boulevard. The daffodil bulbs were funded by Councillor Sherlock and have been planted as part of a wider partnership project called Operation Beacon. Recently Cheshire Constabulary and Plus Dane Group visited all properties in Sutton Way flats to gain a better understanding of residents’ issues and concerns. During the visits, residents were offered the latest property marking kits. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Great Sutton and Little Sutton areas &

Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends

and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Behind the scenes at the zoo An amazing time was had by year 6 pupils of Little Sutton CE Primary School when they went behind the scenes at Chester Zoo. They enjoyed a unique experience meeting the primate keepers and going into areas of the Zoo not usually open to the public. They were met by keeper Mark, who will be appearing on ‘The Secret Life of Chester Zoo’, and were taken up above the parts of the orang-utan enclosure the public can see. The keepers enticed the apes with spinach and sweet potatoes, and at times the pupils were within a few feet of these magnificent animals.

Making North Road safer North Road in Ellesmere Port is a safer place to travel following a successful 18 month project involving Cheshire West and Chester Council working collaboratively with Jaguar Land Rover, Vauxhall Motors, Cheshire Constabulary, DHL, Less Common Metals and Quality Freight Group. Councillor Nicole Meardon, Cabinet Member for Children and Families, said: “Excellent partnership working has led to the installation of traffic calming and double yellow lines along the length of North Road. “The work was in response to articulated lorries regularly parking along the road, creating a single traffic lane. Large numbers of vehicles also congregated in the area and reports were received of cars racing up and down the road. Several near misses had been reported by staff travelling to and from work at Vauxhall Motors.” Helen Brackenbury, chairwoman of the Community Safety Partnership, said: “Road safety and safer neighbourhoods are a priority for the partnership this year. The reports of racing activity on North Road, coupled with the parked lorries, were a real safety concern. “Cheshire West and Chester Council, Cheshire Constabulary and local businesses worked together closely to find a solution to the problem. Vauxhall Motors, Jaguar Land Rover, DHL and Councillor Diane Roberts, Ward Member for Netherpool, all provided funds to enable the installation works. “Vehicles no longer congregate on the road and general speeding has been reduced. This has been a true partnership success and I would like to thank everyone involved.”

Booklet reveals town centre origins ELLESMERE Port Local and Family History Society have launched their latest booklet telling the story of how the Town Centre developed from a single farm known as Stud Farm. The stories of the Cambridge Road School, the York Road football ground, the evermoving market, Lewis’s and Asda, the bus station, Coronation Road and the EPIC each have a chapter devoted to them as do the ideas, proposals and actual development of the civic and commercial areas in the ‘Back to the Future’ chapters. Mayor of Ellesmere Port, Cllr Peter Rooney said: “The Ellesmere Port Local and Family History Society has brought together a wonderful collection of stories that together paint a very interesting picture of the town centre, which was newly built after the war when Ellesmere Port was a boom town. ” This is the fourth in the ‘Memories’ series produced by the Ellesmere Port Local and Family History Society. The 104 page limited edition publication is fully-illustrated including 250 photographs, along with explanatory maps and diagrams, taking the reader through fifteen decades of the Town’s history. It is available for sale at the Central Library in Ellesmere Port and the National Waterways Museum for £10. l The Mayor of Ellesmere Port, Cllr Peter Rooney is joined by the chairwoman of Ellesmere Port Local and Family History Society Celia Webber, CWAC libraries officer Debbie Owen, members of the history society, Port Arcades boss Les Lyon and Jochem Hollestelle, from Cheshire West and Chester Council, Regeneration

Elderly woman robbed in her own home

Police are appealing for information from the public after a vulnerable 85-year-old woman was robbed in her home in Ellesmere Port. The victim answered the door of her home on Heather Close, Ellesmere Port, only to be confronted by three masked men who claimed to police officers. She tried to close the door, but the men pushed the door and forced their way in. According to the police, once inside one on the men put his hand firmly and tightly over her mouth and then bundled her into the living room while the two accomplices went upstairs and searched for valuables. It is believed that they got away with a quantity of cash. Det Sgy Robin Grantham said: “I believe that these three despicable men specifically targeted this woman knowing that she was vulnerable and elderly. “As a result of their inexcusable actions the victim has been left extremely distressed and is now scared to live in her own home, the one place that everyone should be able to feel safe.” Anyone with any information is asked to contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 722 of 7th December. GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

Evergreen January MID WINTER can bring icy cold or drab wet days so you will want something cheerful to look at. Yellow and red are cheerful colours in an evergreen shrub. Yellow foliage and scented white flowers in spring can be provided by Choisya ternata Sundance. This is sometimes known as Mexican Orange Blossom. Grow in a sunny sheltered spot, good for a space by a fence or wall but not in an open windswept position. It forms a rounded shape to about 1.5m tall and can be cut back in early spring to keep it to shape. Red foliage can be provided by Photinia Red Robin with glossy leathery leaves and bright red shoots. Best kept trimmed to size in a relatively sheltered space. As a contrast try a Euphorbia characias subsp. Wulfenii – a bit of a mouthful of a name. As you can see from the photo this is a perennial with grey green foliage. It has lime green bottle brush bracts in spring that look very dramatic. Also likes a slightly sheltered position, well drained soil and when happy, will set seed. Just watch for the milky white sap which can cause skin irritation. I also love the ground cover plants that quietly do their bit and are never showy. Bergenias come in many sizes but the smaller ones such as Baby Doll have lovely rich green rounded leaves and stems of pink bell like flowers in spring. Growing to about 30cms tall they make a good edging plant for any relatively moist soil in sun or shade, sheltered or exposed. A contrasting front of border plant would be Euonymus Emerald Gaiety with its cream and green leaves which can be trimmed to make a neat plant about 45cms tall. Not much to do in the garden in January but you can get out and prune apple and pear trees. Established trees should not need much pruning. Any branches that are rubbing, growing inwards or diseased should be cut out. Cut out the top third of the main leaders or side branches to encourage blossom on side shoots. Cut back deciduous hedging such as Beech, Hawthorn and the very spiny Pyracantha. The latter has 2cm long needle sharp spines that are as strong as nails and will go through leather gloves so be careful and wear gloves. Janet Heath Garden Mentor

Well known and respected local bathroom and wetroom experts, Wirral Wetrooms have announced a massive quarter of a million pound investment and expansion project. Pulling on their industry leading design skills and extensive experience, the team have planned a show-stopping new look that is set to revolutionise their Irby showroom.

The first phase of the expansion to their upstairs showroom has begun with renovations to incorporate fully functional bathrooms settings including 10 operational showers and 12 working basins and taps all with the latest digital technology. Q Should I be concerned about how much water is used in spray-function toilets?

A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply. Q I’m really interested in buying a Geberit toilet with a spray function, but I have heard they’re very expensive. Are there any more affordable alternatives?

Do you need to file a

Tax Return?

Filling in your Self Assessment could be the most stressful thing on your mind at this time of year. Have a read of our suggested approach to your Self Assessment tax return: Are you: l A Company Director? l Self Employed? l Receive income from abroad? l Have untaxed income, for example, interest or rental income? If the answer is yes, then you need to consider completing a return and ensure you consider the following: 1. Are you registered for Self Assessment with HMRC? 2. Do you know your Unique Tax Reference (UTR)? 3. Have you got all the information on your income for the 2015/16 tax year? You will need to collate paperwork such as: Business income and expenses Interest Statements Dividend Vouchers Pension Payment Statement 4. Complete your return. 5. And finally don’t forget to file by 31 January 2017. Filing late will bring you an instant £100 penalty but filing now can mean getting your refund earlier if one is due! You should leave plenty of time to get any help that you might need if you get into difficulties.

It’s a good idea to have an accountant take a look at the return for you. Accountants can get very busy in the run up to the Self Assessment time, so asking early will guarantee that they can allocate time to look at yours.

Foremans offer FREE Self Assessment fee quotes. If you would like to discuss your Self Assessment and get some free advice just call us on 01244 625 500 or email charlotte@foremansllp.com.
