MP celebrates big election win Justin Madders celebrates with his team after he was re-elected MP for Ellesmere Port and Neston with a big majority. The Labour man totalled over 30,000 votes, which was 13,000 ahead of Conservative rival Nigel Jones and a big increase on his 2015 win. Mr Madders said the future of the Ellesmere Port Vauxhall plant will be central to his plans during his term in office.

Beware bogus driveway cleaners

Ellesmere Port officers are warning elderly residents to remain vigilant following reports of bogus callers. Officers have received multiple reports from residents in the Rivacre area who have been visited by a man offering to professionally wash their driveways and patios for an agreed price. On one occasion the resident accepted the offer. However, the man did not complete the agreed work and then became aggressive towards the victim, a vulnerable elderly woman, demanding that she paid him more money. PC Lucy Hawkins from Ellesmere Port Local Policing Unit said: “The suspect is described as being a white man with an Irish accent driving a white transit van. On each occasion the man has specifically targeted vulnerable elderly residents. “I urge anyone with any information into either of these incidents to contact Cheshire Police on 101. I’d also like to appeal to the local community to look out for elderly relatives, friends and neighbours to help reduce the likelihood of someone else becoming a victim.” Anyone with information regarding the incidents should contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting occurrence number 0717158262. Information can also be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

LETTER FROM WESTMINSTER by Ellesmere Port and Neston MP Justin Madders

Expect the unexpected!

W

hen the election was called back in April, everybody was expecting Theresa May to increase her majority substantially. The opinion polls pointed to that, the political pundits all agreed that was the most likely outcome and the main reason why she called an election three years early was that with a small majority in Parliament, the temptation to increase it was too much. In what must go down as one of the biggest political miscalculations of all time, though, we now find ourselves in a position where Theresa May does not have enough MP’s to pass legislation without the help of others. As all the main legislation is passed in the House of Commons any governing party needs the support of over half of all MP’s in order to govern effectively. This is where the DUP come in; it looks like they will enter into what is known as a “confidence and supply” arrangement with the Conservatives. This is not the same as the coalition that they entered into with the Liberal Democrats in 2010 as that involved both parties taking up ministerial positions and agreement on all aspects of the legislation put forward. The deal with the DUP is likely to be less formal but will mean they will agree to support the Government on main items such as the Queens Speech and the Budget. Most political pundits do not expect such an arrangement to last particularly long, but after this result is it worth listening to the pundits?! Some have speculated there may be another election later this year and I certainly wouldn’t rule that out. However, I suspect that the Prime Minister’s successor in the Conservative Party has calculated that whilst she has no long term future as their leader, it is too early to remove her, particularly when everyone is still reeling from the election outcome. Maybe things will look different this time next year but it will take a very brave Prime Minister in future to call a snap election. I am of course personally absolutely delighted to be returned to Parliament with an increased majority, the biggest we have seen in the constituency since 1997. Whilst I didn’t expect to be facing another election only two years after I started I genuinely enjoyed the campaign. We had good weather for most of it which helps when you are out on the doorstep every day but it was great to be able to spend so much time discussing the state of the world with you all. I met so many old friends and new ones during the campaign and it was such a refreshing change from the closeted, unreal world of Parliament. There are huge challenges facing the country and our community over the coming years and we do need a period of time where these issues can be properly addressed away from the frenetic atmosphere of an election campaign. Whether that actually happens or not remains to be seen but amongst all this uncertainty my commitment to representing the people of Ellesmere Port and Neston will remain constant.

Kelly wins nail prize

Congratulations to West Cheshire College’s Level 3 Nail student Kelly Svenson, 24, from Ellesmere Port who has taken first place at UK Nail Tech in the Tip and Overlay category. UK Nail Tech 2017 is part of the annual Beauty UK Show, held at the NEC, Birmingham. The competition offers nail technicians currently working or studying in the UK to enter their work in either the Top Tech competition or the Student competition, with a total of 13 categories across the two.

Students land theatre jobs

Students from West Cheshire College impressed the Floral Pavilion Theatre so much that five of the College’s former technical theatre students have landed positions at the 21st century venue in New Brighton. Dave Jones and Stephen Hawker, from Ellesmere Port, Lee Draycott and Jimmi Richardson, from Wirral, and Daniel Clare, from Warrington, all attended West Cheshire College and have gained positions within Floral Pavilion’s technical team. “I’m really looking forward to working at Floral Pavilion, the team are really great and have been so welcoming. I completed my Technical Theatre course at West Cheshire College last year and it has proved to be invaluable in landing this appointment,” said Lee.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

HIGH SUMMER IN JULY There are so many flowering plants out in July that I am spoilt for choice. One that you may not know is a shrub, Abutilon Kentish Belle. This is a tender shrub growing to about 2m tall and as you can see from the photo, has hanging red and yellow flowers loved by bees. So if you have a sheltered corner that gets sun in summer on well drained yet moist soil then try it out. It is hardier than other Abutilons and would do well on the Wirral where winter temperatures are lower. Another supposedly tender plant is Agapanthus with round heads of white or blue flowers. These are hardy in my clay based soil in full sun in Chester. You can grow them in pots and bring them in over winter. They do well with low growing perennials around the base. If you have dryer soil and sun then why not try Verbena bonariensis and Eryngium bourgatii or Sea Holly. The silvery blue stems of the Sea Holly look great with the taller stems of the Verbena and both are loved by insects. Surround with low growing geraniums or purple leaved Heucheras. Janet Heath Garden Mentor

Another tall perennial is Campanula lactiflora Alba with stems of white flowers up to 1.2m tall. Good for the back of the border in moist soil but not in a windy position. Plant autumn flowering bulbs such as Nerine bowdenii or Amaryillis belladonna in sunny sandy soil or in pots for autumn colour. If your geraniums have flowered, take the shears to them and cut back hard, some varieties will flower again. Prune plums and cherries after fruiting has finished, not in winter. Make sure you water vegetables like beans and courgettes for a good crop. If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. The Rowans at Malpas is open on 1st and 2nd July. It has an Italianate theme and is divided into different areas from quiet pool to exuberant pots planted with annuals. Also open on 15th and 16th July is Sunnyside Farm, Little Budworth. Five acres of country garden with wildflower meadow, pool, herbaceous borders and woodland to enjoy.

HEALTH & BEAUTY By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing

Lip Service By Angela Bartlett, Owner Sensoria Beauty We smile with them, we kiss with them, we speak with them and we eat with them, but lips are often forgotten about in our beauty regime. It’s only when we notice that they are cracked, lipstick is bleeding or they are not as full as they used to be that we sit up and take notice of them. Lips are a particularly vulnerable part of our face as they have no oil glands, the thin is extremely thin (having only 3-6 layers of cell compared to 16 layers found in other parts of the skin) and due to the large amounts of saliva in the area are susceptible to dehydration. Did you know that lip cancer is far more prevalent in men than women as they rarely put anything on their lips to protect them? So how should be looking after them? Protection and restoring the barrier function of the skin on your lips is key. Using lipstick is a good method of protection. Choose lipsticks with a moisturising formula and preferably additional beneficial ingredients such as vitamin E. Use a specific lip product to treat your lips. Look for ingredients such as shea butter and Indian Gentian extract to restore barrier function to keep them soft, supple and protected. Sesame seed extract is a great ingredient for hydration and reducing roughness. New ingredients such as Apple Fruit Extract has been show to increase tissue volume in lips to address thinning and ageing lips. HEALTH AND FITNESS BLOG

Staying slim this summer So you book your holiday, the diet starts, you head off to the gym, get in shape then think your allowed to over indulge, you come back a stone heavier and you’re back to square one, tanned but feeling rubbish. If this sounds familiar read below to see where you can make changes and stay slim on your summer holidays. Most companies now do all inclusive and with the limitless drinks and food choices available, this is now the most popular choice for your family holiday. But with endless supply of cakes, puddings, fried breakfasts, beers, wines and cocktails it’s the worst option for staying trim. However, it doesn’t have to be... Breakfasts are the most important meals of the day, so chances are whenever thing is cooked for you and free you will be starting the day in the right way. So, healthy options for breakfasts, start with a black coffee/ green tea. Fresh fruit and yoghurts are usually always available, so this would be another good option. Poached eggs on a slice of granary bread, another healthy option, beans on toast, limit the butter and there are a few options you can choose from. Often the juices will be from concentrate so watch the sugar in these, ensure you have a glass of water to start the day, pop some lemon slices in to start off the day with an internal cleanse and to keep hydrated. Lunches; Salads are an easy option when allinclusive so stay away from dressings and oils and these are always a good choice. Aim to get some protein within them so a piece of grilled chicken or fish to go will keep you fuller for longer and ensure you getting all the nutrients you need. This lighter option will prevent you

from feeling bloated in the sun again ensure you are drinking enough water with every meal. Evening meal, this tends to be the trickiest one for people. When your dressed up, the tea time options are doubled and wine is on the agenda on the whole people tend to use this meal as their biggest. Problem is after eating a heavy meal washed down with alcohol, your body need to digest it all throughout the night, meaning as your body is digesting the food, your liver also needs to get rid of the toxins from the alcohol. Making this a doubly hard job for your body whilst you sleep. Opt for some veggies, with meat options, stay away from the pasta, pizzas and burgers and really watch the amount of carbonated drinks you are consuming. Ask yourself if you really need a pudding? Are you still hungry? Are you just eating your dessert because it’s there? Chances are you’re probably eating just because you can, think of the wasted calories and opt for fruit instead. Remember a scoop of ice cream contains around 137 calories, usually people would have up to 3 scoops for a dessert or holiday snack, that’s 411 calories! Do this every day for a week’s holiday and this is 2877 calories! A day’s full allowance in just desserts or snacks! Add this to your wines, beers and cocktails and extra food and its clear to seem why people waistline increases after a two-week break. Swap some of the bad choices for the options above and don’t undo your hard work this summer.
