Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Great Sutton and Little Sutton areas &

Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends

and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Politics takes a back seat for comedian Ben A LABOUR councillor for Little Sutton is stepping down after four years. Ben Powell, who represents the St Paul’s ward, won’t be standing for re-election in May because he has decided to pursue a career in comedy. The 27-year-old has served on a number of committees and has been instrumental in setting up the Friends of Little Sutton Railway Station Group. Cllr Powell has performed at a number of comedy venues across the country, including the Edinburgh Fringe. He told the Pioneer: “This was one of the most difficult decisions that I have ever had to make, but I have decided to take a step back from frontline politics in order to concentrate on other interests including my comedy career. At the moment I am considering it as taking a break and I am absolutely not ruling out making a return in the future.”

High hopes for town centre revival Plans to regenerate Ellesmere Port’s town centre will include delivering a £20 million purpose-built public services hub in the centre of the town – potentially bringing together seven public sector organisations under one roof. The idea is to redevelop the site of the EPIC leisure centre when it closes this year. The creation of a new facility will improve the delivery of public services; reduce the cost of delivering these services to the combined public purse and release land for re-development for housing. A full business case will now be worked up working closely with partners to gain full approval. The news follows an announcement by the Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise partnership last week that it had been successful in securing an

additional £15 million for the area from the Government’s Local Growth Fund, of which more than £8 million will go towards Ellesmere Port’s Central Development Zone. Speaking at the meeting, Councillor Stuart Parker, Executive Member for Culture and Economy, said: “The public services hub proposed for Ellesmere Port is an exciting project that not only looks to bring seven public partners together in one building but also proposes service integration and transformation to deliver improved outcomes for our residents and cultural changes as well as savings to the public purse. “It will have a catalytic effect on wider investment in the central area of the town with the potential creation of up to 2,000 new homes which is very significant.”

Food for thought Ellesmere Port library now has its very own café for hungry library users, local residents and shoppers to take a break. It is being run by qualified chef and barista, Lisa Sims, who will be offering a range of refreshments including freshly brewed coffee, paninis and homemade cakes. The café will open during normal library hours, closing 30 minutes before the library closes. Local ward member, Cllr Justin Madders added: “There are lots of things going on in the library in addition to the traditional book service and I would encourage local residents to come down and see what it has to offer.” l Ellesmere Port Library is now part of a reading scheme to support people with dementia and their carers. The Reading Well Books on Prescription scheme for dementia will enable GPs and other health professionals to recommend helpful reading from a list of books available to borrow free from local libraries. It was launched by actress, Judy Holt, who played dementia sufferer Lesley Kershaw in ITV’s Coronation Street, who spoke about how much her local library had helped her when she researched her TV role.

• A FREE home visit • A FREE written quotation

A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply. Q I’m really interested in buying a Geberit toilet with a spray function, but I have heard they’re very expensive. Are there any more affordable alternatives?

Gardening by Janet Heath

Early spring colour

D

affodils, properly known as Narcissus have flowers from late winter through to spring depending on the variety. The variety February Gold is, as its name suggests, a tall, yellow early flowering variety. I love the sweet scented varieties usually known as Narcissus. For fragrance, grow Cheerfulness, a variety with 3 or more double scented flowers in a creamy white colour. This will flower in Late March to April. Another scented variety that will flower April to May is Narcissus Pheasant Eye. If you like colour contrasts plant the blue flowered Chinadoxa with your daffodils. Only small but with sky blue starry flowers and will self seed happily. Shrubs start flowering in spring so if you want some yellow colour go for Forsythias. Untidy tall growing shrubs but they do flower very early with bright yellow flowers. If you have room for a spring area in the garden, plant a Forsythia, a pink flowering currant, Ribes Pulborough Scarlet alongside and finally a Japanese Quince or Chaenomoles. This last shrub has flowers in either pink, scarlet red or white on bare, spiny

50

twiggy branches. Once all these have finished flowering you can give them a good pruning the get new stems to grow and flower next year. Underplant these shrubs with Snowdrops, mini Daffodils, Chinodoxa, autumn flowering Cyclamen and the flowering perennial Pulmonaria for a year long season of colour. I would also plant a honeysuckle and a summer flowering clematis through the shrubs for summer colour. Jobs to do in the garden include deadheading daffodils once they have finished flowering. This helps the plant to put its energy into flowers for next year rather than setting seed. Any plants in pots do give a feed to them. Re-pot in new soil based compost such as John Innes No3 mixed with horticultural grit for drainage. If the plant is too heavy, at least remove the top few centimetres of old compost and replace with new. In late March, start planting annuals such as Marigolds, Poppies and Cornflowers outside in seed beds. Finish pruning roses. Give all your plants a feed with a slow release, general purpose fertilizer such as Growmore to give them a boost for spring growth.

Planners rubber stamp Ledsham Road scheme Council chiefs have confirmed that thousands of new homes are likely to be built off Ledsham Road. Cheshire West and Chester Council has finalised the local plan which sets out the blueprint for where development is allowed in the town. In Ellesmere Port the Plan supports the Council’s strategic regeneration framework and recognises the huge potential for employment creation in the town. Land at New Bridge Road, Hooton Park, Ince Park and Stanlow will continue to provide a varied portfolio of employment sites in the town. It is thought that as many as 2,000 homes will be built at Ledsham Road, with the creation by Redrow of a major ‘garden village’. Cllr Keith Butcher said at the time: “I think that there is a willingness and understanding that there is a need for housing but when we see brownfield sites – vast tracts of land – which in fact we have given planning permission for and nothing has happened. “And then we are presented with this which has a sort of history which is very difficult to unravel.”

Town centre car park goes free THE COUNCIL is reinstating free parking in Ellesmere Port town centre. The Wellington Road car park will be free in a six month trial to see if it can bring some shoppers back to the town. Car parking was once free in the town but the council began charging over a decade ago to help balance the books. The down side was that this made the town centre even less attractive when compared to Cheshire Oaks. Cllr Lynn Riley, said: “This is a great example of the council working in partnership with the local community to highlight their needs and find real solutions.

“The council is committed to supporting local trade and I hope the attraction of free parking will encourage more shoppers to visit the shops and market within the town centre, which will no doubt be a real boost for traders “Initially a six-month pilot, we will monitor the success of the free parking at Wellington Road after that.” Local member, Cllr Lynn Clare, said: “I’m sure that introducing free parking at the town’s Wellington Road car park will have a positive effect on footfall, both on Whitby Road and in to the city centre and I welcome the move.” There are also seve Ellesmere Port car parks which are ‘free after 3’.
