More houses at Rossfield Park

ANOTHER 233 houses are to be built on the Rossfield Park site after the council was awarded a £3million grant. The award from the government’s Housing Infrastructure Fund aims to provide new infrastructure to help developers. Local Authorities were invited to bid for funding to provide new infrastructure that would enable new homes to be built in areas of greatest demand. Some house building at Ellesmere Port’s Rossfield Park site has already been completed but later phases stalled due in part to increased costs for a new bridge. Crime writer in Little Sutton Little Sutton Library is hosting a crime evening next month, which is open to the public. Cheshire West and Chester’s Libraries Service is offering the opportunity to learn from a real forensic expert and a bestselling crime-writer at events coming up soon. Crime-writer Margaret Murphy and real forensic expert Helen Pepper have teamed up to write novels and they will tell all. There will be a crime scene evening at Little Sutton Library on Friday 6th April at 7pm. You will be able to find out how real forensic experts deal with a crime scene and how crimewriters make sure they get the facts right. There will also be an opportunity to chat with the writer and the forensic expert, who together form crime writing duo, Ashley Dyer. Fly tipper avoids jail An Ellesmere Port man narrowly avoided a jail sentence after he pleaded guilty to fly-tipping. Samuel Trevor Dixon (age 28), of Braemar Court, Ellesmere Port appeared before the West Cheshire Magistrates Court where he was sentenced to 50 hours community service and ordered to pay £920 costs. The court heard that council officers found 20 bin bags full of his household rubbish dumped on land next to the cycle track near Lime Street/Stanley Road, Ellesmere Port. Dixon was traced by the officers and ultimately was interviewed under caution when he admitted the offence, saying it was rubbish from when he was moving house. In sentencing Dixon the court noted that the seriousness of the offence gave the option for a jail sentence in this case. However, bearing in mind Dixon’s previous good character and his early guilty plea, a community service order was imposed.

Missing owl flies back

A wooden owl sculpture has been safely returned after it disappeared from Meadow Park, at Dolphin Crescent. The sculpture, which is part of a story, is believed to have been stolen. Police reported that it has now been returned to the Friends of Meadow Park.

Hospice thanks its volunteers The Hospice of the Good Shepherd held a thank you evening to show their appreciation to volunteers from across the local community. Held in the Hospice Café and Living Well Centre, the event saw hospice staff waiting on volunteers to say a big ‘thank you’ for the contribution they make to the running of the Hospice. Volunteer roles at the hospice range from receptionists, catering staff and fund-raisers to companions, retail assistants and drivers. Entertainment on the evening was generously provided by the Sing Me Mersey choir; John Holt, magician and beauty treats and a raffle prize from Kiehl’s Debenhams, Chester. Sue Beckett, who leads the volunteer team at the Hospice said: “Our volunteers do so much to support the running of the Hospice, so we wanted to show them just how much we appreciate their time. It is fair to say that the Hospice would not be able to continue to provide the high standards of care and support to people living with a life limiting illness without the support of our brilliant volunteers, so saying ‘thank you’ in this way is the least we can do.” Volunteering gives you the chance to meet people, make new friends, become part of a team and learn new skills while raising money for your local hospice. March highlights By March, spring will be here, the bulbs will be out, some trees and shrubs will be growing and we will hope that there isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a cold snap to damage new growth.

Pale yellow Primroses and Primulas in multi-colours will continue to flower in sheltered spots, along with some blue violets. I expect that blue Forget me Not will be starting to come out too and en-masse they make such a cheerful show. No need to sow seed, just let the plants set seed, shake them around and next year you will get a wonderful show. Another perennial that is good for early spring, will grow in dry light shade and has evergreen foliage, is the Epimedium x versicolour Sulphureum. With heart shaped leaves that turn bronze in winter it will bring forth stems with pale yellow flowers in spring. You can cut off the leaves to see the flowers as they form or leave the leaves on and hope the sprays pop up above the leaves. Continuing the yellow theme, the vibrant yellow flowers of Forsythia will be everywhere on the streets. These easy shrubs will form large twiggy plants with yellow flowers clustered on the leafless stems. You can grow as a hedge covered in yellow blooms before the leaves come out. Cut back just after flowering, to keep them within bounds. Another March flowering shrub is the evergreen Mahonia aquifolium Apollo. This is an unassuming low growing evergreen shrub (to 1m) often grown in shade to cover the ground and usually looking a bit tired as it is ignored. However, try feeding it in spring and you should be rewarded with clusters of yellow flowers. The photo is of a swathe of these shrubs grown as ground cover under taller trees and the scent from the flowers was quite superb. Work to do in the garden includes cutting back dead foliage from perennials, trimming the winter flowering heathers to encourage fresh new growth for next year and completing the pruning of roses. If you grow Cornus or Dogwood for the red or yellow stems, cut them back hard every two or three years to about 30cms tall and give them a good feed of general purpose fertilizer such as Growmore. Feed all trees, shrubs especially roses and perennials with Growmore or a specific Rose Fertilizer to give the plants a good start to the year. Weigh out the recommended dose as I find I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t apply enough!

CRIMES IN THIS AREA Crimes reported to Ellesmere Port police recently include the following: Sutton Way – A plastic bottle of milkshake was thrown through a glass pane of a door. The front door was kicked in on another property. West Cheshire College, Sutton Way – A male thief, armed with bolt cutters, was disturbed while trying to steal bicycles. Chester Road – Cash was stolen during a burglary at a café. Oxton Green/Sutton Way – A man kicked fence panels after getting out of a taxi on Old Chester Road. Gateacre Court – A pair of children’s trainers were taken when an opportunist thief took a parcel was left in the garden by a delivery driver. Old Chester Road – The wing mirror of a Hackney cab was damaged after the male passenger got out of the cab. Parklands – A thief was arrested and charged after being disturbed by the occupant of the house. Sutton Way – A dark green and orange Carrera mountain bike was stolen from West Cheshire College. Sutton Way – A Peugeot scooter was stolen from outside a house. Berwick Hotel – Three tool boxes, welding machines, various cordless tools and a Bosch digital leveller were stolen from a van. Croft Court – The rear passenger window was damaged on a VW Golf. Woodland Road – Black Honda 125cc motorbike, parked at the Woodlands pub was damaged after being pushed over by school pupils. Sheepfield Close – A break-in was reported at a ground floor flat. Redwood Drive – A thief attempted to removed roof tiles on an integrated garage but could not gain entry. Seymour Drive – A suitcase containing clothes, Xbox games and equipment was taken from a garage. Parklands – Eggs were thrown at a house. Overpool Road – The front window of a house was smashed with a rock. Heywood Road – Fishing equipment including a GPS, radio and screen were taken from a fishing boat parked on a residential driveway. Sutton Way – A provisional driving licence, and cash were taken from a backpack at West Cheshire College. Baker Drive – Damage was caused to the front tyre of a Ford Galaxy, parked on the driveway.
