Are you making your child fat? DID you know that 1 in 3 children aged between 6-9 years are obese? Did you know that food/ eating habits in young children are what can contribute to them being overweight as an adult. There are several factors in today’s society that contribute to a childhood obesity, simply things such as; Larger portioned foods, snacks between meals, sugary drinks, lack of activity, skipping breakfast, bad habits observed by parents the list goes on. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO BREAK THIS CYCLE? You may think what’s a few treats they are children that’s what kids do, eat sweets, ice cream etc. However you could be contributing to their risks of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular problems, reduced mobility, low self-esteem and depression plus many more negative consequences. The fact is when a child is young they only know what they are taught and see on a daily basis, if they think having full fat coke for breakfast and take-aways of an evening is the norm, they are more likely to continue this when they get older. If you’re guilty of this it’s not too late to change habits and you being a good role model is the first place to start. If your child is a fussy eater, try a variety of foods and offer lots of praise and encouragement for trying something they wouldn’t usually have. Sit down with them at meal times and show them that you eat the new foods too and tell them how good for you they are. Children need to try foods on more than one occasion, they might not like it the first time but keep trying, try adding different sauces, or mix it in with something they do like. Be sure to make a big fuss if they do finish or even try a new food. It’s important they stay active, how many children do you see as soon as they get home from school are straight on the computer/ social media. Limit these times and get the whole family out and about. These may sound
like simple tasks but they can make a huge difference. A child should be physically active 60 mins of the day! It’s important also not to use food as a reward, “oh well done honey you did your homework, here’s a cream cake!” use sticker charts, praise and days out to reinforce good behaviour. You often hear lots of mums saying “Give him this it will keep her quiet!” yes you might get two minutes peace while they finish off a bag of sweets. But you will have more grief when your child needs teeth removing due to tooth decay! Keep snacks to savoury treats, cheese, crackers, veggie sticks for example. Keep in mind of the effects in later life, cut of sugary snacks, encourage good eating habits and show them good life skills by being a good role model. It’s never too late to make changes! Do you want a parish council in Sutton? PEOPLE Ellesmere Port are invited to comment on proposals about how their communities can have their say. The proposals follow consultation exercises run by Cheshire West and Chester Council earlier this year as part of Community Governance Reviews. Some communities are represented by town or parish councils while others are represented by different forms of community governance arrangements like community meetings, neighbourhood management, tenant management organisations, resident and tenant associations and community associations. Areas not represented by town or parish councils are referred to as unparished areas. The Council’s Community Governance Reviews are taking place in unparished areas of Ellesmere Port to find out what governance arrangements are in place and
how people feel about them. It includes Ellesmere Port Town, Grange, Ledsham and Manor, Little Neston and Burton (part), Netherpool, Rossmore, St Paul’s, Strawberry, Sutton, Whitby and Willaston and Thornton Cllr Paul Donovan said: “It is important that all residents are able to have a say in what happens in their neighbourhoods and that they are happy with the arrangements in place to do that. “I would appeal to residents in these areas to take a look at the proposals and let us know what they think.” Anyone who lives in or has a connection to the unparished areas of Ellesmere Port is welcome to comment on the recommendations. GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
FLAMING NOVEMBER COLOUR With the flowers coming to an end for the year, it is time to appreciate the leaves changing colour to yellow, orange and red and berries on shrubs. In sheltered areas where Acers can thrive in cool damp soil, their leaf colour can be stunning in autumn. I have an Acer palmatum Orange Dream, in a pot. In spring the foliage is lime green but in autumn the leaves are edged with orange red than gradually deepen over the days. If you have space for a large tree in the garden and want autumn colour then try a Liquidamber. Some are huge trees but Liquidamber orientalis will grow slowly to 6m tall with yellow and orange foliage in autumn. Plant well away from buildings, at least the ultimate height away, to prevent tree root damage to structures. Last month I suggested a striking grass, Miscanthus sinensis Flamingo for autumn colour. As the weather cools, this grass takes on orange reddish hues as can be seen from the photo. Berries do well at keeping colour going on into winter and this year is superb. Look around as you walk to the shops and you are likely to see gleaming Pyracantha shrubs loaded with berries
in red, orange and yellow. Another desirable plant is Callicarpa or Beauty Berry. The variety Profusion is best for berries which are clusters of purple dotted up the stems. Needs a moisture retentive soil in sun or light shade and berries best after a hot summer. This year Berberis are berrying well with clusters of scarlet berries which make a stunning contrast on the purple leaved varieties. As leaves fall, and if you have space for a leaf compost heap, clear them up and put them in their own heap or damp into plastic bin liners, preferably with grass cuttings to help them rot down. Leaves and grass make the most delicious compost (from the plants point of view!) which is usually weed free. Dig out any vegetables that have finished for the season and add a layer, 3ins deep, of well rotted manure onto the top of the bed to be taken down into the soil over winter. Make sure you have cleared all leaves from around roses and cut off any that show signs of disease. These spore based moulds stay in the soil ready to emerge in the next season so keeping the area clear is important. Finally, plant tulip bulbs, your last chance for a display next year!

LETTER FROM WESTMINSTER by Ellesmere Port and Neston MP Justin Madders
Time for action on Vauxhall future The news that 400 jobs are to go at Vauxhalls is a massive blow for the individuals concerned but also for the local economy, particularly in the run up to Christmas. Following the announcement I was granted an Urgent Question in Parliament on the news. Urgent Questions are matters that are not already on the agenda for the days business in Parliament but are urgent and important in nature. In order to be granted an urgent question an application has to be made to the Speaker’s Office, who then requires a representative of the relevant Government department to attend in order to answer the question. On this occasion, the Minister tasked with responding on behalf of the Government did not convey a sense of grip of the situation or tangible solutions to the challenges ahead. If we accept at face value that the reason for the announcement is the falling sales of the Astra then that is not a reflection of the dedicated local workforce and does not give us many clues about PSA’s ultimate intentions for the plant. However, while it was encouraging to hear the PSA Group affirm its commitment to the Astra plant at Ellesmere Port and its confidence in the capability and skills of the Ellesmere Port workforce to deliver the required improvements
in performance, there was a clear indication that plant efficiency and certainty over our future trading relationship are pre-requisites for further investment decisions. It is therefore clear that we need the Government to commit to a much greater level of support in terms of reducing plant costs and expanding the local supply chain. At the moment only about 25% of the parts for the Astra are sourced locally; huge savings can be achieved by increasing that figure. These are things that need to be worked on now and I know that locally the Council and the Local Enterprise Partnership are making steps in that direction but we need political and financial commitment from central Government to achieve these aims as well as certainty about our future trading relationship as soon as possible. It is time for action from them and I am going to be spending the next few weeks and months putting as much pressure on them as possible to support the plant. After all, they managed to come up with proposals that convinced Nissan to commit to UK manufacturing, we should expect the same level of support for Vauxhall. In the meantime I hope that the Company will work closely with the Union to minimise the number of compulsory redundancies and ensure there is support for those who have to leave.

HEALTH & BEAUTY By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing
Lip Service By Angela Bartlett, Owner Sensoria Beauty We smile with them, we kiss with them, we speak with them and we eat with them, but lips are often forgotten about in our beauty regime. It’s only when we notice that they are cracked, lipstick is bleeding or they are not as full as they used to be that we sit up and take notice of them. Lips are a particularly vulnerable part of our face as they have no oil glands, the thin is extremely thin (having only 3-6 layers of cell compared to 16 layers found in other parts of the skin) and due to the large amounts of saliva in the area are susceptible to dehydration. Did you know that lip cancer is far more prevalent in men than women as they rarely put anything on their lips to protect them? SO HOW SHOULD BE LOOKING AFTER THEM? Protection and restoring the barrier function of the skin on your lips is key. Using lipstick is a good method of protection. Choose lipsticks with a moisturising formula and preferably additional beneficial ingredients such as vitamin E. Use a specific lip product to treat your lips. Look for ingredients such as shea butter and Indian Gentian extract to restore barrier function to keep them soft, supple and protected. Sesame seed extract is a great ingredient for hydration and reducing roughness. New ingredients such as Apple Fruit Extract has been show to increase tissue volume in lips to address thinning and ageing lips. Big cannabis farm found Police discovered a large scale cannabis farm at a commercial property on Rossbank Road. While carrying out a detailed search of the premises officers discovered a significant quantity of cannabis plants and Class A drugs. Sergeant Paul Davis of Ellesmere Port Police, said: “This was a fantastic result by officers. We understand the negative impact illegal drug use and supply can have in our local communities. “An investigation is now underway to find those responsible and I would urge anyone with any information to come forward and speak to us.”
Two injured in nightclub attack Police investigating two assaults at a nightclub in Ellesmere Port are urging witnesses to come forward. In the early hours of Saturday 9th September a 28-year-old man was on the dance floor of a nightclub on Whitby Road when he was attacked by a man. As another man inside the club tried to come to the victim’s aid he was also assaulted by the offender. One victim sustained minor injuries and the 28-year-old victim was referred to Aintree Hospital with serious injuries. The man who attacked him is described as being white, over 6ft in height, of a large muscular build and was wearing a dark coloured top and dark baseball cap. He is believed to be the only man on the dancefloor at the time of the assault wearing dark shorts. Detective Constable Joanne Wilkinson, of Ellesmere Port CID, said: “Lots of people would have been in the nightclub around the time the assault took place and I want to appeal to those who saw a man matching this description. If you have any information which could help with our enquiries please come forward and speak to us.” Anyone who may have been in the nightclub at the time and seen the assault took place is asked to contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident 84 of 9th September. Information can also be passed on anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Absentee landlord neglected Ellesmere Port flat Cheshire West and Chester Council reaffirmed its commitment to taking tough action on absent landlords who neglect their properties following the successful conviction of Karen Jean Foulkes. Following complaints from an existing tenant, the Council’s Regulatory Services officers repeatedly contacted Mrs Foulkes (48) to resolve a number of problems, but she failed to take the action necessary to improve the safety or cleanliness of her property. Mrs Foulkes of Morgan Walk, Nantwich, was fined £2,292.50 in West Cheshire Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 21 September - following her failure to comply with an improvement notice served under section 11(1)(a) of the Housing Act 2004. The charges related to a flat in Flint Court, Ellesmere Port. Following numerous requests to Mrs Foulkes to take action to improve electrical wiring and problems with mould and damp in the property, court action was the only remaining option. Cllr Angela Claydon, Cabinet Member for Housing said: ““This property had fallen into an unacceptable condition and state of repair which would have put tenants at risk of illness or severe injury. Absent landlords will not be allowed to leave their premises in an unsafe condition. We hope this case sends a clear message that we will take action whenever necessary.”

Memorial plaque brought back to life The Mersey Iron Works memorial plaque, thought to have been lost, has been in storage for a few years. Thanks to a grant from the War Memorials Trust, the plaque is being repaired by a metal conservation specialist and will be back on display in Ellesmere Port. The plaque will be installed as the centre piece of a new memorial garden. The garden, on the corner of Whitby Road and Cromwell Road is part of a programme of Ellesmere Port town centre improvements, and is expected to start in November. The garden will be open to the public all year. The derelict property which stood where the garden will be constructed was beyond economic repair and needed to be demolished. The garden will also improve visibility for both drivers and pedestrians at this busy junction. Cllr Louise Gittins, Cabinet Member for Communities and Wellbeing said: “The plaque will be installed at a key gateway into Ellesmere Port, forming an entrance to the new housing developments along Cromwell Road. “I’d like to thank the local businesses and partners that have made the new memorial garden possible including the Royal British Legion who gave permission for the memorial plaque to be situated in the garden. The War Memorials Trust grant has helped towards the specialist repair and conservation of the bronze memorial plaque.”
The area between Cromwell Road and the railway line from Whitby Road to the canal was a heavy industrial area for most of the 20th century. The Wolverhampton Corrugated Iron Company (WCIC) was the first industry to locate there in 1903, moving from the Midlands. The WCIC was also known as Mersey Iron Works, and quickly became the largest employer in town. The WCIC installed a memorial plaque at their factory entrance along Cromwell Road. The plaque was dedicated in 1926 and present on site until the factory closed in 1997, after which the plaque was taken to
other locations in town before ending up in storage. In consultation with the local branch of the Royal British Legion this project was born. The concept design for the garden was created by BCA Landscape from Liverpool. Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Landscape Architect has produced the detailed design for the garden that will be constructed by WE Parsons from Ellesmere Port. St Modwen properties has given permission for the garden to be constructed on their land, for which planning permission and a lease was needed.
