Town enters North West in Bloom For the very first time Ellesmere Port has entered into the ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ category of the North West in Bloom competition. The non-competitive category is the town’s first steps towards a full entry into the prestigious horticultural competition. The Mayor of Ellesmere Port Karen Shore said: “The ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ category is all about bringing members of the community together to make a positive change to the place they live, work or spend their leisure time. “Many groups are doing marvellous work all over the town and I’m delighted the entry in North West In Bloom brings them all together to showcase what wonderful results are being achieved. We have planted 20,000 bulbs throughout Ellesmere Port this year, wildflower planting on open spaces and verges, as well as the wonderful flowers in the town centre planted by our StreetCare Services teams.” A formal grading on the standard of the entry will be made in October this year. North West in Bloom judge Julie Livesey; Cabinet Member for Environment, Councillor Karen Shore, ward member Cllr Mike Edwardson and officers from Cheshire West and Chester Council during the judging.

Police seize off-road bikes Police have seized a number of scrambler bikes in Ellesmere Port during a special operation. The operation saw officers from the Local Policing Unit target those riding off-road bikes over a three-day period. They seized three scrambler bikes and recovered an Audi car that had been stolen from Exeter. Officers also issued five traffic offence reports and gave one person a warning for possessing cannabis and another a warning for riding a scrambler bike in a manner causing alarm, distress or annoyance. Sergeant Paul Davis, of Ellesmere Port Local Policing Unit, said: “A police drone was set up to assist officers on the ground in identifying bikes being ridden anti-socially and the three-day operation was a great success. “The three scrambler bikes seized as part of the operation followed on from five being seized earlier in the month – so eight in total. “The anti-social use of these bikes will not be tolerated by officers in Ellesmere Port. It is dangerous, for both the rider and other members of the public, and the noise and disruption these nuisance bikes cause is a strong source of frustration for communities. “I want to assure residents that we take the issue extremely seriously. The three-day operation may have finished but we will continue to target youths and adults riding scrambler bikes in an anti-social manner and take the necessary action. “Where appropriate, bikes will be seized and disposed of.” Police have the power to seize scrambler bikes which are used in a way which causes harassment, alarm or distress. They can also be seized if they are ridden on a public road unless the rider is at least 16 years old, holds the relevant licence and MOT, is covered by insurance and has paid their road tax. Different laws apply to mini-motos depending on whether they are intended for use on or off-road and whether they are designed or intended for children under 14 to play with. These laws are in place to ensure that they are safe to use in the environment and by the age group they are intended for. They could be a danger to the rider, especially children and youths, if the bike is too powerful for them. Sgt Davis added: “Parents need to make sure that a bike is suitable for their child before they allow them to have it. Otherwise it will put them and others in danger. “Parents also need to be aware of the laws and how a bike can and cannot be used. “To ride a bike on a public road you must be at last 16 years old, hold the relevant licence and MOT and be covered by insurance. You must also have paid your road tax and the bike needs all the usual equipment to be fitted and working – for example, lights, brakes, brake lights, a horn, a speedometer, good tyres and registration plates. These are required even if it is being pushed. “If you have any concerns about your child not adhering to the laws – and having their bike seized and possibly being prosecuted – do not let them have one of these bikes.”

Police hunt for burglary duo Detectives in Ellesmere Port have released an efit of two men they are keen to speak to in connection with a burglary. Two men forced their way into a house on Silverne Drive, Whitby, pushing past a young teenage boy inside. The men made threats to the boy and demanded to know where jewellery was searched the home. In fear, the victim escaped from the men through the first floor window, suffering an injury to his foot. He managed to run to safety at a nearby neighbour’s house. One man is described as being white, 5ft 9ins, of a stocky build and with an injury above his right eye and aged in his mid-30’s. He was wearing a dark beanie hat, denim jeans and a dark coloured fleece. The second man is described as being white with olive skin, of a medium build, with dark hair, clean shaven and aged in his mid-30’s. He was wearing a baseball cap with yellow writing, a black fleece zipped up with a logo on the chest and navy dark blue jeans. He also wore black or dark grey workmen’s gloves with a red colour. Detective Constable Tom Davies, of Ellesmere Port police, said: “We want to trace the men responsible for this crime and I would appeal to anyone who may have been around the area at the time of the incident and seen any suspicious activity to come forward. The alleged burglary took place on 12th July.

Heart of Irby Village Dave and the team have always supported the local community in Irby and the surrounding areas, and played a part in the life and soul of the village and love being there,
Dave commented “We recognised Irby as a great place to stay and grow in, we like the space we are in. We’ve taken on 2 apprentices and making this significant investment into the building can only improve it.” “Our new showroom will be completely unique for the Wirral, and will revolutionise the experience of buying a new bathroom for our customers. We want nothing more than people to come in and try them out for themselves, even down to taking your shoes off and feel the under floor heating, you can even take a shower if you are game, we don’t mind!” And with service and quality and experience that is second to none, your will be sure to find your slice of Bathroom Bliss, right here in the heart of Irby.

Q Should I be concerned about how much water is used in spray-function toilets?
A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply.

HEALTH & BEAUTY By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing
Eyelash extension solutions By Angela Bartlett, Owner Sensoria Beauty Q. I can no longer spare the time to have a full set of eyelash extensions. Can you suggest any alternatives? A. There is nothing quite like a really good set of individual eyelash extensions to give length and volume to your lashes. However, we do understand that this is a lengthy process with a professional application taking around one and a half to two hours to do. This is because each lash needs to be glued individually and dried separately to avoid long-term lash damage. However, there are quicker and great alternatives to this process including, Blink & Go lashes, Party Lashes and LVL. To find out which of these treatments are best for you visit the blog page at www. sensoriabeauty.co.uk if you are unsure which type to choose have a professional consultation with us. Q. Why do you need to ask so many questions before my first treatment, I’m only having an upper lip wax!?
Angela Bartlett is a highly qualified Advanced Aesthetician with over 34 years of experience in the beauty and holistic industries. She is a past Chairman for BABTAC & CIBTAC, teacher and International Examiner. Her expertise is currently called upon to judge national competitions, the provision training and quality treatments.
A. I know it can be a little lengthy and maybe a bit irritating to complete a consultation form and to be asked questions when you attend for your first visit. But there are solid reasons why they need to be asked. Firstly, it’s for your safety. We need to know if you have any health conditions or are taking any medications that may react adversely with the treatment you are having. Especially diabetes and taking steroid or Roaccutane medication can cause problems with waxing. Secondly, it’s to make sure you get the most appropriate treatment. Sometimes the treatment booked is not the one that will give you the best results. Upper lip waxing is fine, but have you considered threading, IPL/laser or electrolysis for the area? Visiting a professional and having a full consultation may help you in the long run. GARDENING BY JANET WEEDS
Early Autumn – September P
lants are in bloom earlier this year due to the dry weather which brings on flowering before the “normal” season.
Colour this autumn comes from Rudbekia fulgida Goldsturm, a jolly yellow daisy like flower with a black centre which flowers for weeks if kept watered. They do best in a heavier soil that retains moisture and need to be split and replanted every few years to maintain their flowering. Another flowering perennial that is doing really well this year is the Penstemons. These produce foxglove shaped flowers for a long period from summer to autumn, especially if you dead head them. They have bright green leaves and the flowers come in red, white, all shades of pink and mauve/blue. This year they have performed well in the heat when other plants have wilted. The smaller leaved variety Garnet with dark red flowers is very good for hot weather. If you are looking for colour from shrubs, then the Hydrangeas of all varieties are performing well if kept watered! They like a damper soil but if the leaves wilt, throw a couple of buckets of water on the roots and they should perk up. Although I love the Lacecap varieties, the mophead types are giving bold colour this year as you can see from the photo. Another late flowering shrub is Abelia Grandiflora. This needs a bit of shelter so a windswept site is not ideal. It has small neat glossy green foliage and in autumn has masses of small white scented flowers. Can get to 2m tall if left unpruned but cut it back after flowering or in spring and it will form a neat shrub about 1m tall. Work to do in the garden. Let your pumpkins and squashes harden off in the sun before bringing them in to a cool garage to store. Protect your brassicas with robust netting to avoid pigeons eating them over winter. If the soil is damp enough, perennials can be dug up and split and replanted. Crocosmias need this as after time they become congested and cease to flower well. Replant a few in soil enriched with well rotted manure for a good show next year. If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Mount Pleasant Gardens, Kelsall open on 1st and 2nd September, has 10 acres of gardens to discover including a sculpture trail.

WHY WE NEED MATHS! There’s no escaping the fact that many employers value the GCSE maths qualification and you’ll often find job adverts that require a GCSE in maths and English. There’s lots in the maths syllabus that is very useful in everyday life not least when it comes to measurement and calculations. This is no more evident than when things go wrong – the University of Northumbria was recently fined £400,000 after a sports experiment nearly killed two of its students when a misplaced decimal point meant they gave the students 100 times more caffeine than intended! But it’s not so obvious how other parts of the syllabus might be useful - I often hear people ask why are we teaching our students about Pythagoras’ - when will they ever use it? I’m not going to try to persuade you that employers favour applicants with a maths GCSE because they believe it’s essential their workforce can calculate the length of the hypotenuse in a right-angled triangle. What these areas of the maths syllabus are developing, however, are problem solving skills. We live in a fast paced, technological age where new and exciting job opportunities arise constantly. As teachers, we need to develop the skills in our students so that they can rise to the challenges presented by this ever-changing job market. Maths, therefore, is important to everyone. It develops the necessary thinking skills such as problem solving and reasoning, which will better place students to succeed. This need for future employability is reflected in the GCSE 9-1 mathematics exam where there is a much greater emphasis on developing these skills. Problems solving skills are not something that can be practised as part of exam revision, they are skills that need to be developed over a period of time. During our group tuition sessions, often students work together on carefully selected maths activities which promote problem solving and reasoning skills. Apart from the fact that the students find them enjoyable and quickly build a rapport with one another, they are able to build on each other’s ideas to develop a deeper understanding of the topics taught. Maths-boost is a company run by Julie and Ed offering maths tuition. Julie was a maths lead in a school before becoming a head teacher. Ed is a qualified maths teacher and works as an examiner for a major exam board. You can find more about us at www.maths-boost.co.uk
