Hayley’s health and fitness

Which exercises are worth your time? HAVING been in the industry for over a decade I have seen many different exercises classes hitting the gyms. Some well worth a go, some you could do a more constructive work out with your Nan! So, with all the ‘latest trends’ being pushed upon you and many more on the way, how do you decide what class is worth doing and more importantly what will work for you! Glow sticks, Kangaroo boots, Steps, Bars, Kettle bells, Disco balls, Wooden sticks... the list goes on, and with every class claiming to give you ultimate benefits what really is the best to choose. Well firstly ask yourself if you want the fun factor, or a genuine hardcore workout. Using extra equipment is great, but is it beneficial to your workout? Some waving flashy wands maybe a giggle but you’re not really getting anything from it. Using weights or weighted equipment is the best option for some added resistance, kettle bells when used effectively can also be of great use to help with toning and strengthening upper body. If you’re wanting to get out the house and have a giggle, a fun work out that you can keep it at your own pace, many classes now have flashing lights, disco balls and flashing glow sticks to help you relive your youth! Secondly, this is to ask yourself is it safe for your current fitness level and useful if you have any underlying injuries. For example, there is no point joining a running club if you have bad knees, this will only hinder your work out. A low impact class swimming, Boogie Bounce, Abs class maybe more suitable. Just as joining a circuits class when you have an upper body injury probably isn’t wise. You also need to consider your fitness level, if you have been training for ages and your fitness levels are high, it’s no good going to a class that’s not going to push you past your limits. Choose a class that is manageable but will push you! You should feel like you are working at 85% plus effort. Mix it up...a good class will alter the sessions

every 6-10 weeks, with new routines or moves to keep shocking your body. If you have been doing the same routine for months and months chances are your body is now used to the exercises and you will have stopped getting results you want. Find something you enjoy but that is worth your time. If you want to lose weight, spending an hour on an exercise programme that is designed for 50 years plus, that doesn’t push you really is common sense that it’s not worth your time. Yet so many times I have seen people at classes working at minimum effort because they are used to going and it’s their routine. This is great that you are exercising and moving and that fitness is part of your weekly routine, but how good is it if you’re doing something that really isn’t helping you. Opt for moderate to high intensity classes that you will feel the burn and blast the calories. Remember increasing your muscle tone at any age once you’re an adult is beneficial. Q Should I be concerned about how much water is used in spray-function toilets?

A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

EARLY AUTUMN 2017 has been an odd year. We had a mild dryish winter, not much spring rain and up to mid July, a dry summer. As a result, many of the later flowering plants have started flowering much earlier. However, there are some plants that will give autumn colour, so here are some recommendations. The dark purple foliage and red flowers of Dahlia, Bishop of Landaff would contrast with the bright yellow flowers of Rudbekia fulgida Goldsturm growing to about 75cms. It is one of my favourite plants because the flowers go on for weeks, in some seasons well into October. Both like a moisture retentive but well drained soil. Another long flowering plant are Asters, which can be tall, about 1m or short to 30cms.

Janet Heath Garden Mentor

They have recently been renamed as Symphyiocrichum but I can’t see gardeners remembering the name! Aster novae belgii Little Pink Beauty grows to about 30cms and has many pink daisy like flowers for weeks. Try Aster frikatii Monch which has lavender pale blue flowers and grows to 1m. Both would look good with the yellow Rudbekia. Sedum spectabile Autumn Joy is a reliable autumn flowering perennial with succulent foliage and flat haeds of dark red flowers loved by bees in autumn. Some perennials will flower again in autumn so maybe your Delphiniums, Roses, some perennial Geraniums and Astrantias will give a second showing provided they have had to first flush of flowers cut off in summer. For pretty flowers under the shade of trees or in other dry

shady spots, try Cyclamen hederifolium. They flower in autumn with the flowers popping up before the leaves as you can see from the photo.. Colour is white and all shades of pink. They grow from corms which start small and over time, will get to saucer size. September and October is a good time to dig up, split and move perennials whilst the soil is damp and plants have time to settle before winter. Also a good time to plant and move evergreen shrubs for the same reason. Plant out runners of strawberry plants or buy new plants. Strawberries start to reduce production after a few years and need replacing for maximum fruit production. If apples are ripe they should come away in the hand if lifted gently. Do not try to pull them off the trees, as that is a sign they are not ripe.

HEALTH & BEAUTY By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing

Face mapping skin analysis By Angela Bartlett, Owner Sensoria Beauty Q. What is a Dermalogica Face Mapping Skin Analysis? A. This is an in-depth skin analysis, allowing every millimetre of your skin to be explored under a magnified light. Throughout the process questions will be asked about your skin and your Therapist will assess the differences in texture and tone. The face is ‘read’ according to 10,000-year-old Taoist tradition with each zone corresponding to an internal organ to enable your Therapist to treat your skin in a holistic manner. For more information about the different zones of your face visit the blog page at www.sensoriabeauty.co.uk, it makes for a fascinating read. The results are recorded on a ‘map’ of your face divided into the different zones. This map is then used to optimise your skin care routine to maximise your skin’s health. Q. I have very little time for myself but would like some kind of facial treatment. How long does a facial take? A. A skin treatment can take from 10-60 minutes. A ten-minute Skin Solver seated treatment is your ticket to glowing skin in a flash. Ideal if you are new to skin treatments, need a skin ‘pick up’ or pre-special event. A 30 minute treatment can focus on targeting a specific skin concern and is a firm favourite for those who have minimal time and want great value for money. A 60 minute treatment is a tailor-made treatment utilising all the professional Therapists skills to deliver optimum results. If you haven’t experienced a 60 minute skin treatment you haven’t lived!

Town regeneration creates 2,600 jobs GREAT progress has been made in delivering economic growth outcomes in Ellesmere Port according to an independent review of progress of the Ellesmere Port Regeneration Programme. An independent review by Amion Consulting was undertaken on behalf of the Ellesmere Port Development Board (EPDB) and Cheshire West and Chester Council. The review focussed primarily on delivery against the objectives of the Ellesmere Port Vision and Strategic Regeneration Framework and the Economic Growth Strategy. The overarching objectives of the programme have been to attract and encourage investment to create local employment and make local people proud of Ellesmere Port as a place to live, work and visit. Councillor Brian Clarke, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Infrastructure said: “The review has identified substantial progress in delivering economic growth for Ellesmere Port including over double the growth in new jobs compared to the rest of the country, over £400m investment and a further £2bn forecast.” A total of 2,600 jobs have been created representing a 9.7 per cent increase in employment compared to the UK average

of 4 per cent growth (2.1 per cent growth in North West). Over the past four years the number of claimants in Ellesmere Port has reduced from 1,850 to 870. There has been a 30 per cent growth in the number of Business Enterprises (15.1 per cent North West, 7.3 per cent UK). There are currently 1,128 new homes currently under construction by Barratts, Redrow, Countryside, MacBryde Homes, Bellway, Persimmon, Magenta, Sanctuary, Linden Homes and Anwyl with 976 homes already completed. Chris Farrow, Chairman of the Ellesmere Port Development Board added: “The report is very encouraging showing the impact the Board and partners have had. We can now look forward to the next phase of investment with the new Enterprise Zone sites being a key focus to securing new business and employment opportunities.”

Arson attack at school building AN ARSON investigation has been launched following a serious fire at a school in Great Sutton The fire at St Saviours School, Seacombe Drive, was reported to officers shortly after 5.20pm on Tuesday 1st August. Officers from Cheshire Police, and colleagues from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, swiftly attended the scene to find that a disused building at the rear of the site was well alight. As a result of the fire approximately 20 residents from adjacent properties were evacuated from their homes and a number of local roads were closed while firefighters dealt with the incident. Residents were allowed to return to their homes shortly after 11pm.

Insp Ian Stead, from Ellesmere Port Local Policing Unit, said: “This was a deliberate act which has cost the taxpayer thousands of pounds and could have could have had very serious consequences. Thankfully on this occasion nobody was injured as a result of the incident, although the fire did cause major disruption for a number of local residents. “Investigation officers from fire and police have now confirmed that the fire was started deliberately. Officers are following a number of lines of enquiry, including CCTV analysis, forensics and speaking to local residents. In addition, a 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of arson; he is currently assisting us with our enquiries. “As part of the investigation I’m keen to hear from anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident and believes that they may have witnessed anything suspicious.”

Duo charged with bank account theft Police have charged a man and a woman with theft from an elderly man in Ellesmere Port. Alan Boniface and Carlie Merryweather, both aged 29 and from Sutton Way, have been charged with theft. The charges relate to money allegedly stolen from two bank accounts between November 2016 and March 2017. The alleged victim is a 92-year-old man from Ellesmere Port. Town centre mugger is caged A man who mugged a pensioner as she walked home using her mobility frame has been jailed. Lewis Frawley, 21, was sentenced to eight years in prison after he pleaded guilty to robbery. Due to his guilty plea, and the fact that he has been on remand since he was charged, Frawley will serve five years eight months in prison. The charge related to an incident that took place in May when he mugged a 68-year-old elderly woman as she walked home from Ellesmere Port Town Centre after withdrawing her pension. Frawley, of Princes Road, Ellesmere Port, attacked the pensioner from behind, snatching her handbag and causing her to fall to the ground. After stealing the victim’s bag, which contained her pension, Frawley simply cycled away and left her in agony on the pavement. As a result of the incident the victim sustained a large cut to her leg which required 18 stitches; she was also left extremely distraught as a result of her ordeal.

SCHOOL 2018 CHOOSING the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions a parent can make. Over the next few pages you can learn about some of the open days that will be running across the area during the autumn months. Open days are so important because they can show parents much more than a report or a school league table. You get to meet staff, ask questions, see the facilities and see how the school operates. Looking for the right school is like searching for the perfect home. It’s only when you step inside that you know if it’s right for you and your child.

Abbey Gate College celebrates 40 Years with special gala concert In July, Chester based independent school Abbey Gate College hosted a special Gala Concert as it marked its 40 years anniversary. As part of the concert, 75 past choir members joined the current choir producing a spectacular sound of 140 voices. The concert was directed by Mr Stewart Smith (right, above) who is retiring after 39 and a half years as Director of Music. During this time, he has led a thriving music department with many of his former pupils progressing to careers in opera, music production and cathedral music. At the concert, the audience also enjoyed performances from the Infant and Junior School choir, instrumentalists, and vocalists. The choir has sung in most English cathedrals including London’s St Paul’s Cathedral, where they will return to in April 2018. The choir has also toured to various locations including France, Belgium (Menin Gate), St Mark’s Venice, Germany, Italy, Holland, Denmark and the west and east coast of the USA on two occasions. The concert also welcomed the new Head of Music, James Andrews (right, below) who, as well as being a former pupil of the College, is an ex-Head Chorister of Chester Cathedral and a graduate of the Birmingham Conservatoire. He begins his post in September 2017. For videos of the night’s performances go to the Abbey Gate College YouTube channel.
