LIFE AT 100 – A BLESSING OR A BURDEN?

I would like to end the year reflecting on the recent Panorama Special about life at 100. The centenarians in this charming film are far from selfish. They are brave, determined to stay independent and not become a burden to their families. Their ranks are growing and the latest statistics showed there were 14,910 centenarians in 2016. One in every three babies born today will live to see their 100th birthday; an incredible statistic which can largely be put down to huge advances in medicine.

Facing up to the challenge!

So do we all want to live to be 100?

This increasingly ageing population present enormous challenges for future generations as the State will not be able to provide nearly enough support for all the centenarians and we must face up to the challenge. In particular, dementia, the illness we all most dread as we grow older, is becoming more and more common, and brings with it such serious disability that it takes professional care to look after those affected. But as the demand for residential homes increases, more and more are closing. There are 92,000 carers in this country who are themselves over 85. Joan Bakewell, the presenter of the programme, talked to Margaret, who, at 102, was caring for her terminally ill son who sadly died this year aged 75. She said her one fear was that she would go first, leaving Richard vulnerable and alone. ‘I have my good days and my bad days now, and I do miss him.’

Most would say, only if you can hang onto your mental and physical health. So we must be prepared to put in some effort to eat properly, exercise enough and keep on learning new things to keep our minds active. It’s amazing how many centenarians look after themselves and continue to enjoy their long lives. It was particular moving seeing a lady who was celebrating her 105th birthday, who said ‘You have one life, live it’, and told her guests to come again next year. Their families and friends rightly treasure her.

We wish you a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. Sarah Green – Director

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL Newsletter

OUT & ABOUT

TARPORLEY Parish Councillors are out and about each month, to monitor the overall appearance of the village and record any aspects that need general up keep and maintenance. The items noted are discussed at the monthly Parish Council meeting, resulting in the agreed actions being recorded in the minutes. The Parish Council minutes are public documents and available for everyone to read; a copy can be found on Tarporley’s Parish Council notice board. FLAGPOLE Tarporley’s flag pole is now in full working order. This is thanks to two volunteers, both members of the Parish Council, who put aside time to undertake the refurbishment. The work was completed in time for this year’s Remembrance Sunday, where many villagers reflected on all the servicemen and women killed in conflict with a two-minute silence. PARKING SURVEY A key priority, which is discussed during most meetings, relates to parking in Tarporley. This month

Parish Councillors have been linking with businesses in the village. If you have a business on or around the High Street or in the Nantwich Rd or Birch Heath Rd Business Parks, then please remember to complete the Parking in Tarporley - Business Survey. A very high, if not 100%, response rate is needed, in order to quantify the employee and customer car parking requirements. This is needed for discussions with CWAC regarding possible new car parks. Thank you to those businesses that have already completed the survey. BENCHMARK When you read the Parish Council minutes, you will note, Councillors are currently considering the condition of benches and the village notice board, in the area by the church; the current benches

12 To advertise call 01244 350398

and noticeboard are not in good repair. The Parish Council have agreed a budget and are beginning to explore suitable replacement options. BEDDING PLANTS It isn’t only Parish Councillors who look after the village. Two members of the village, have replaced the summer bedding plants, with winter plants, in the large planters by the bus stop. The volunteers have not only given up their time to change the planting, but also provided the replacement plants. A big thank you. If you notice something in the village that needs upgrading, please attend the surgery at the start of each Parish Council meeting; you will be made very welcome and your views taken seriously. Also, if you would like to complete voluntary work around the village, please contact the Parish Council clerks, Abbie and Delia.

Parish Council Meetings Second Monday of each month (except August) in the Craven Room (the downstairs room accessed from the rear car park) of the Community Centre. Each meeting starts at 7pm with an Open Forum, during which members of the public can address the whole Council on matters of concern to them. At 6.30pm, prior to this meeting, the Parish Council holds a surgery where members of the public can talk one to one with individual councillors on an informal basis.

FESTIVITIES It won’t have escaped your notice, Christmas is fast approaching. The Parish Council are preparing for the annual switch on of the tree lights. The event will take place on Friday 1st December, at 6- 7 pm, around the ‘old chestnut tree”. Father Christmas will be taking time away from his busy duties, to make an appearance and speak to the children. Many of you will know this is a busy event in Tarporley’s calendar, so to ensure we can all enjoy ourselves, we please ask people not to let their children climb onto the mound, under the chestnut tree.

The evening will provide an opportunity for fund raising by the Tarporley Rotary, who will be selling hot chestnuts, burgers etc. There will also be a collection in aid of Tarporley War Memorial Hospital, at Father Christmas’s grotto. On Friday 8th December, there is a Carol Concert being held, in aid of Tarporley War Memorial Community Hospital, at St Helen’s Church, starting at 7pm. Tickets cost £10 and include mulled wine, minced pies and entry into the hospital raffle. Tickets are available from Blagg’s Electrical, Swaffields, The Old Fire Station Chocolate Shop, and Tarporley Hospital.

TARPORLEY HIGH SCHOOL & SIX

Italian art inspiration Six A-level art students have just returned from an inspirational week exploring the Renaissance period, producing ambitious costumes and drawing from the Tuscany landscape having been successful in securing a place on the prestigious Italian Art education tour for Cheshire schools. Hannah Ashdown, Isabella Ashdown, Minnie Leahy, Suki Le Hunte, Hatty Moss and Paige Warrington all submitted applications back in May this year and following a rigorous interview with a scrutiny of their portfolio all six pupils were offered a place on the tour. Many pupils who attend the tour which has run since 1984 have used the opportunity as a spring board to gain places at Ruskin, Oxford and the Royal Academy, London. Hannah said: “It was a life changing experience, one that will stay with me forever. Hatty Moss and Paige were awarded best costume in their respective groups, Minnie won best sketchbook and Suki took the art history award. The picture shows some of the students in the hills of Tuscany wearing their gorgeous costumes that they made.

Year 9s in Liverpool The Year nine school trip to Liverpool was a day of learning about geography and religious studies. Pupils worked in small groups to share information about the surroundings and the environment of Liverpool and its tourist attractions, including a community Christian Church in Kensington and trip to the Albert Dock.

Trouble in Kelsall

Bunbury Singers are putting on two Christmas concerts this December in aid of St Luke’s Hospice.

There has been an increase of anti-social behaviour in Kelsall recently, particularly in the vicinity of Kelsall Green Children’s Play Park, Flat Lane and Common Lane. Police have asked for the public to keep an eye on the areas and report vandalism to them by calling 101.

The first is at St Boniface church, Bunbury, on Saturday 9th December at 7.30pm, with guests the Crewe Male Voice Choir and Tarporley Silver Band. On Monday 11th December, 7.30pm, at St Andrew’s Church, Tarvin, the choir will be joined by Cantoris Chamber Choir, Frodsham Chorus and the Tarvin Church Choir. Tickets are £8 and are available both locally and on the door.

HEALTH & BEAUTY By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing

Top 3 Most Wanted Winter Beauty Treatments By Angela Bartlett, Owner Sensoria Beauty Winter is a particularly demanding season for skin, body and nails, but it is also the perfect time for addressing beauty problems that are more challenging to treat during the sunnier months. At number one is: IPL (Intense pulsed light). The winter months, with lower light levels, are the perfect time to get maximum benefit from this treatment. IPL provides long-term hair removal, age spot reduction, red vein removal and skin rejuvenation and is top treatment every winter. At number two is short wave diathermy for red vein removal. The cooler months are an ideal time for the treatment of unsightly red veins on the face. These small broken blood capillaries can creep across your cheeks and nose giving an unwelcome ruddy glow. This treatment becomes very popular during the winter as the cooler temperatures allow the treated capillaries to settle and heal much quicker than during hotter summer months. At number three is skin-needling for skin rejuvenation. Clients find that having micro-needling to stimulate collagen production to give a more youthful appearance easier to manage in the shorter, darker days of winter. This is because there is a ‘downtime’ following treatment of around 24-48 hours when the skin looks slightly reddened. So don’t delay…November to March is the ideal time to embark on a self-improvement journey. For more information about any of the above treatments please visit the treatment section at www.sensoriabeauty.co.uk

Deputy steps up to the top job at Tarporley A new head teacher will be starting at Tarporley High School in January. Jason Lowe is the new man at the helm, following the retirement of long serving head teacher Sarah Lee, who has been at the school for 21 years with 16 of those in the top job. Mr Lowe is currently deputy headteacher at Tarporley, and before that, was director of the sixth form. Mr Waddington, chairman of governors, said: “We are confident that under his leadership, our school and sixth form will continue to go from strength to strength.” Between now and the end of the autumn term, Ms Lee and Mr Lowe will be working closely together to ensure a smooth handover in the new year. Remembering her first impressions of the school in 1996, Ms Lee says: “I was struck by the warm welcome from staff and students, the high standards of education, and the strong community spirit. There are still one or two members of staff here that remember those times, but I am sure there are parents and friends of the school who recall what it was like then. The school and the sixth form have grown in size, the buildings have been

much improved, and we are a centre of excellence in Cheshire West and Chester and beyond. At the same time, I believe we have continued to build on the great qualities already at the heart of the school when I first knew it in the 1990s and in the decades before then. “It has been a great privilege to lead our superb High School and 6th Form College and to enjoy the inspiring support of so many students, staff, families and members of our community over the years. There has been so much to celebrate, for individuals and for the school as a whole. Highlights include the Tarporley High School 50th anniversary, our Ofsted Outstanding, and our success in winning the funding to overhaul the D Block. ‘I continue to find my job just as rewarding and exciting as ever, but there are other things I would like to do in the future, and I have therefore met with our board of governors to inform them that I will be retiring from the post of Headteacher at the end of this term.” l Jason Lowe (top) and Sarah Lee

YOUR WISHES RESPECTED LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY It is common for people to consider how they would like their estate to be dealt with after they die. However, it is just as important to make the same provision for your affairs during your lifetime in the event that you lose the ability to make decisions yourself.

Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) are documents that provide the legal basis for you to plan in advance for another person to make certain decisions on your behalf. Making an LPA now would provide you with the reassurance that your affairs will be looked after by someone you know and trust to respect your wishes. Contact our Wills, Trusts & Estates Team today for a free half-hour consultation. *To receive your discount please quote LPA OFFER when making your appointment.

MP supports Singing for Syrians

Antoinette Sandbach MP is encouraging local schools, churches and organisations in Eddisbury to get involved with charity campaign, Singing for Syrians which raises money for those most affected by the ongoing crisis in the region. Locally, Chester Cathedral has supported this initiative over the past two years and will again be holding a carol concert on Sunday 17th December at 3.30pm. Antoinette Sandbach MP commented: “Singing for Syrians is a fantastic initiative that I am very proud to support. It is a positive way of helping Syria’s most vulnerable people, whose lives have been ruined by the civil war, and has already made a real impact in the three years since it first started. I am encouraging everyone in Eddisbury to get involved as much as they can – every contribution goes directly where it is needed most so even the smallest of events can make a big difference.”

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

CHRISTMAS CHEER Winter is when you notice evergreen shrubs with a good shape or rich foliage, that at other times of the year blend into the background. These shrubs can form the centrepiece of a winter corner of any garden. There is no point in having winter interest hidden away, put the plants where they can be seen from the house or by a path used daily. For Christmas cheer a few shrubs will provide red, yellow and green colour in your garden. A slow growing columnar golden Yew – Taxus baccata Standishii will form a slim column of green and golden yellow foliage. Next to it plant a rounded Skimmia shrub with white or red flowers and then maybe a couple of Pittosporum Tom Thumb shrubs. They have a dumpy rounded shape with new growth being lime green that then fades to chocolate brown. At the back plant a red stemmed Cornus alba Sibirica and cut the stems back to 30cms each year in February to encourage a forest of new red stems for the next season. Or look for some of the variegated Hollies such as Ilex aquifolium Argentea Marginatai which can be kept trimmed to shape. If you have a male and female, you should have red berries too. Smaller plants that will give you colour at year end before the bulbs pop up include any of the Euphorbias. These have evergreen foliage ranging from silvery grey, to plum red and green edged with red. Some such as Euphorbia characias subsp. Wulfenii can grow to 1m in height and width. Then there are smaller Euphorbias such as Silver Swan which will form a neat plant with white edged green foliage and bottlebrush flowers in spring. The ever reliable Heucheras do well in winter where they have some shelter and well drained soil. They will keep their leaves well into winter if it is mild. I have clients who have overwintered the orangey, fudge coloured leaved varieties and in my own garden the purple leaved varieties do well. Make sure that any tender plants are brought into a greenhouse or well lit garage to overwinter. Or cover plants with a fleece if they are borderline tender. Bubble wrap around any pots with plants that you don’t want to freeze. If the roots freeze then the plants will die.
