REMEMBRANCE AS the Royal British Legion Club in Tarporley now sits empty, it’s poignant to think that May 2015 will mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day when the Allies finally prevailed in World War Two. To mark the occasion the British Legion are organising a number of events nationally, and here in Tarporley it will be commemorated with a service and wreath laying at the War Memorial.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Tarporley, Tattenhall, Kelsall, Tarvin &
Bunbury areas and $ODQ LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW KLV approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Guides all smiles after dance marathon Four local Girl Guide Units in Tattenhall, Tarporley, Bunbury and Malpas joined forces to take part in a Danceathon to raise money for Comic Relief. They were inspired by the national Danceathon held for the first time, at Wembley Arena, as part of the activities organised to raise funds for Comic Relief. The guides arranged their own sponsorship and together they danced nonstop for two hours at the Barbour Institute in Tattenhall. Their efforts raised the fantastic sum of ÂŁ1253.

Caitlin cuts off her much-loved locks! Caitlin Lovelock, aged 12, from Tarporley had her hair cut off and donated it to ‘Little Princess Trust’ who make wigs for children who have sadly lost their own hair. In addition, Caitlin raised over £300 in sponsorship and the money will be divided between ‘Little Princess Trust’ and ‘The Alzheimer’s Society’ in memory of a much loved family member.
Bucket loads of thanks! Firefighters wish to thank the people of Tarporley for their generosity at the car wash on 4th April in aid of the Fire Fighters Charity. Car wash organiser, Watch Manager Martin Boardman, said: “Firefighters and helpers with their buckets and sponges raised money for this worthy cause as well as handing out road safety advice at the Station. We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped us raise over £195.”

Bunbury women see drama premiere Members of Bunbury WI were treated to an exclusive first showing of the ITV drama series Home Fires which has been filmed in the village. The preview of the first episode was shown in the beautiful St Boniface Church on the evening of the WI’s members’ meeting. This was primarily for everyone involved in the making of the series, mainly filmed in and around Bunbury. As the Women’s Institute is the principle subject of Julie Summers’ book “Jambusters” on which the series is based, the group had all been cordially invited to attend the evening which turned out to be pretty amazing with a real community spirit in a packed Church. Tarporley Talk May 2015 29
LAST month I highlighted how it is important to make some time to talk when we are concerned about the health and welfare of our loved ones. Once you have braved those “touchy subjects the next step is to consider the main issues. When living at home suddenly becomes dif icult, the irst reaction of many is to move into a residential care home. This is not a choice to be taken lightly so it is important to take into account all of the options available. The thought of leaving your family home that has many memories and a whole way of life can be very overwhelming. The feeling of losing your independence, familiar surroundings and close friends nearby and moving to a strange place can be frightening to say the least.
CONSIDER THIS:ǧ • Do you want to remain living in your own home or go into a Care Home? • Would having someone come to your house on a daily basis to help
you get washed and dressed; give you some breakfast and help with some household chores make all the dierence. • If your mobility is not a good as it used to be, could you be at risk of a fall. • If so, if you had a live in carer and companion, would that re-assure you and your family that you are properly looked after? SO YOU MAY SAY:ǧ • I don’t want to go into a care home but I am not sure about having someone else living in my house. • Surely having a carer at home is more expensive. • Will I like and be able to trust the people who look after me and will they be reliable? • Will I still have control as to how I like to live in my own home? WHAT ARE YOU CHOICES? • Staying in at home and consider alterations to accommodate your needs.
• Arrange help with housework, shopping and anything else you feel would be appropriate. • Moving to live closer to a member of your family • Sheltered accommodation oers security and support but still allows plenty of independence. • Move into a residential home where everything is taken care of. • Stay in your own home and have high quality live in carers and companions.
NEXT MONTH: WHAT ARE THE COSTS AND FINANCIAL OPTIONS OF HOME CARE? If you would like to discuss the many options available, please contact us on 01829 260280 to make an appointment.

Tarporley: A pear wood near a hill TARPORLEY T Y High School & Sixth Form College’s Student Leadership Team partnered Tarporley Parish Council to plant two pear trees outside the school gates on Eaton Road in March. Richard Stratham, from the Parish Counccil expertly instructed students in the art off ttree planting after explaining the significa ance of pear trees to Tarporley. Mr Statham exp xplained to students that the place name Torpelei first appeared in 1086 with the meaning ‘pe pear wood near a hill called Torr’. The school can now w look forward to watching the shrubs and treess g grow to yield spring blossom and fruit for ye yea ars to come. Eddisbury is considered a safe Conservative seat, covering the area from Winsford, Audlem, Kelsall, Malpas and Tarporley. The closest Labour came to winning the seat came in 1997 when the Conservatives squeezed in by a little over 1,000 and then in a 1999 by-election when Mr O’Brien succeeded Alastair Goodlad. Candidates: George Antar (Cannabis is Safer Than Alcohol), Andrew Garman (Green), James Laing (Lab), Rob Millington (UKIP), Ian Priestner (Lib Dem) and Antoinette Sandbach (Cons).

health & beauty with Angela Bartlett
Skincare in the sun By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing
Q. I read your article in last month’s Tarporley Talk on treating age spots. I would like to have some age spots treated on my hands and face, but isn’t this the wrong time of the year to have them treated with IPL (intense pulsed light) now the weather is becoming sunnier? A. Not necessarily. IPL can be carried out at any time of the year, but the skin must be protected from sun exposure, sun beds or fake tan for treatment to take place. This is because the IPL light will target any pigment in the skin, not just the pigment you want to remove. We find that most of our clients have managed to achieve having IPL treatment throughout the spring and summer months with a little bit of extra care and forward planning. We recommend that you always keep a factor 50 sunscreen in your handbag to top up protection throughout the day. Brush-on powder block for the face to reapply sunscreen over makeup g has also been a great hit with our clients and has enabled them to keep their skin well-protected from UV exposure.

Q. I have very thin and sparse eyebrows. Is there anything that can be done to improve them? A. There are lots of reasons for eyebrow hair loss from chemotherapy to hypothyroidism, and from vitamin deficiency to ageing; so firstly, check out if there is any medical reason why you may have excessive eyebrow hair loss. At Sensoria, we find that the most frequent causes of eyebrow hair loss is due to over plucking and ageing. Sometimes a simple HD Brow treatment with the regular use of a hair stimulating product to use at home is enough to see good results. Whilst the hair is growing back, an eyebrow pencil specially selected to perfectly match your eyebrow hair colour makes a big difference to how your brows look. Alternatively, there semipermanent makeup to create fuller, long-lasting brows. Come along to our free demonstration of semi –permanent makeup this month. Details opposite.

VE Day commemorations in Tarporley The Government has unveiled plans to mark the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day from Friday 8th May to Sunday 10th May. The Royal British Legion will be playing a key delivery role in the commemorations on a national level with a wreath laying at the Cenotaph, a National Service of Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey, a parade through Whitehall and a reception for veterans on H Horse G Guards d P Parade. d
The overriding aim for VE Day 70 is to provide opportunities for people to pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in the course of WW2; to reflect once more upon the global and lasting significance of that event; and also to recreate the public sense of euphoria and relief that people so keenly associated with the end of hostilities. In Tarporley there will be a Service of Commemoration at St. Helen’s led by the Rector, R t R Rev G Georgina i

As important as it undoubtedly is, if you’ve not already heard enough from politicians as we approach the general election, you very probably soon will have! You’ll be please to know then, that I’m not going to talk about the election, the economy, investments, ISA’s or Pensions. Instead I wanted to share with you some examples of how very easily life can be turned upside down, without any influence from politics, the economy, or share prices. About 12 months ago, the husband of a good friend had an accident at home. He fell, not from a great height, but sadly hit his head and suffered severe brain injury. It was touch and go for a while, and in the first couple of days immediately following the accident, his wife and children were expecting the worst. Thankfully, medical science is a wonderful thing, and the abilities of the surgeons, doctors and nurses caring for this man meant that he did recover, albeit with some permanent physical disabilities as a result of the damage to his brain. Why am I telling you this? Life and health insurance protection is the underpin of most good financial planning. The person I’m telling you about had no sickness cover through his employers and they still had a mortgage. His income stopped overnight and in fact he was never able to return to his previous job. At a time when his wife wanted to concentrate on getting her husband well again, she had to carry on working, effectively to keep a roof over their heads.
Critical Illness insurance puts money in the hands of those who need it, not just when someone dies, although the right policy will do that too, but when life hands out one of its unexpected and unfair blows. I have a client who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis when she was 43 and was at the time, self employed. She’s now 58, very disabled and wheelchair bound , she still works, partly because she wants to, but partly because financially she has to. Like many people when they become self employed, the last thing she thought about was the additional expense of protecting her income either through income protection insurance, or indeed critical illness cover, when in fact it should have been the very first consideration. In the words of J F Kennedy, “the time to repair the roof is when the sun shines so don’t wait until the monsoon season before seeking the assistance of a trusted advisor when it comes to the financial protection of you and your family. If you would like further information or indeed arrange an appointment so we can help you assess what “pre you might need, without o us on 01948 840738. As ever we look forward to hearing from you.

A LARGE gathering, of mainly local people, came to the Public Meeting at Bickerton Village Hall on March 19th to discuss the devastation caused by the National Trust’s woodland clearance on Bickerton Hill, writes Tony Ord. In the event, the National Trust declined the invitation to attend. The Friends of Bickerton Hill, who called the meeting, were represented by Tony Ord and the meeting was chaired independently by James France–Hayhurst. Natural England did attend and regional director, David Drake and team leader Alex Lowe answered questions relating to their organisation’s involvement in the heath regeneration programme, but they were unable to answer questions that should have been directed to the National Trust, consequently some very important questions remained unanswered; for example, did the National Trust carry out an Environmental Impact Assessment before the woodland clearance started and did they consider any mitigation, due to the fact that the large and entire woodland ecosystem on top of Bickerton Hill had been destroyed by their actions? Questions from the public were about, the widespread
use of chemicals on the Hill, the conversion of fields and not woodland to heathland, lack of supervision, use of public funds for woodland clearance, access to management plan for Hill, control of birch saplings, livestock on the Hill, erosion, climate warming etc. HEALTH RISK The chairman of the Sandstone Ridge Trust read out a long list of leaders of organisations who were united in their support for the National Trust’s heathland restoration and woodland clearance, however, it is most unlikely that the membership of those organisations would have been balloted for their opinions. He then read out a letter which indicated a one sided conservation policy with little understanding of the value and richness of the Hill’s mixture of woodland and heathland habitats, as the woodland and its bird and other wildlife, wasn’t mentioned. David Drake, replying to a question, agreed to write with a summary of the questions and answers. On the question of chemicals, the Friends of

Bickerton Hill and the majority of the public don’t want them to be used on the Hill, as they are inappropriate in a SSSI and in public spaces, where there is a risk to the health of visitors, particularly children. It was emphasised that the Friends of Bickerton Hill and some of the public are supportive of the heath regeneration programme, but NOT as it is being carried out ut by the National Trust at the he expense of the landsca cape and wildlife in the well established and rich woodlan and habitat that has develope ped d on Bickerton Hill over th the last 75 years. Follow owing questions, the ch hairman called for a vote,

The chairman thanked the representatives of Natural England for coming and Tony Ord thanked all who had attended the meeting and all those who had helped in any way with the organisation of the event. It had been hoped that the magnitude of support for a stop to tree felling, at the meeting, plus the petition of more than 1,00 00 signatures and the man any emails the Nationall Trust has received, assking them to stop any fu furrther felling, would have ve made them reconssid ider their course of acti tio on.
by show of hands, on one of three motions, with the he following results.
Despite all the protests and pleas, the response from the National Trust has been negative.
The National Trust says that it will not give a guarantee to stop cutting th the woodland down on Bicke kerton Hill. The Friends off B Bickerton Hill say that cu cutting more trees down wn will serve no useful p purpose whatsoever, as the National Trust has already cleared as much, or al more, of the Hill than they are able to manage. It would seem that the tranquillity and beauty of Bickerton Hill, treasured by so many, is likely to be disturbed by the sound of chainsaws and forest strry plant, with the constantt th threat of more destructi tio on, for years to come. Alread ady many regular visitors have gone elsewhere in sea earch of peace and be eauty.
• For a stop to fe felling any more trees es; was overwhelmi mingly supported. • Forr the National Trust to cont ntinue felling more, or all of the trees; was unanimously th defeated. • For the National Trust to continue with the heath restoration, according to Natural England’s plan, outlined at the meeting i.e e. 50% of the Hill to be re eta tained as woodland and he erbicides used only as a las ast resort; gained 8 votes es including one “only if the ey stick to the plan”

FOOTBALL TALK...
TARPORLEY VICS FC Vic’s enter new veterans’ league TARPORLEY T Y Vic’s First Team lost two League games during the month and also won two matches, with the outstanding result being the defeat of Egerton FC. The two defeats were to Malpas and, disappointingly, Penlake FC The Malpas game was a hard fought derby from which Tarporley Vics were deserved of at least a point although they lost the game 2-1. The away game versus Penlake however was a poor performance and the 4-2 result was a fair outcome. Against Egerton FC however Tarporley Vics form improved and the team came back from 3-1 down to win by a 4 – 3 margin with Dan Ball grabbing the winning goal at the end of the game. Congratulations go to Malpas FC who clinched promotion to the Premier Division of the Cheshire League during April. They are neck and neck with Congleton Vale as we approach the final few games of the Season to see who is crowned Champions. Good Luck Malpas to Players & staff and enjoy the Premier Division Football next year. With the Season running to plan this year, with very few
postponements due to poor weather, the Cheshire League have pencilled in President’s Cup Matches. In the “last 32 Tie” Tarporley Vics entertained Moore United FC and the improving form resulted in a 3 – 0 win with Sam Lloyd, Al Moore & Jamie Ball grabbing the goals. A quarter final versus Penlake FC will have been played in April; let’s hope the next edition of Tarporley Talk has news of another positive result. The last home league game of the season is on 2nd May, 3pm, v Daten - come along and give us your support! Tarporley Vics Reserves Season has petered out to result in a 5th placed finish in the Crewe Combined League. Defeats to Mary Dendy FC and Winnington 1994 FC resulted in a poor finish to the Season. There’s always next season to look forward to boys! Tarporley Vics FC are delighted to announce that they will be founding members of the Chester and District Veterans League. Eight teams of “Over 35’s” will play in the League that starts in September. The Team, which will include players from
Bunbury & Tarporley, will face teams from Tattenhall. Ashton, Dee Rangers, Frodsham, Cross Keys, Whitegate & Blacon and they will play home & away League games and one cup competition with three week gaps between each game. Just enough time for the ageing muscles to recover! If anyone can offer sponsorship for this new venture it will be appreciated. Any Veterans who are new to the area and fancy getting involved please contact Mike Brereton on 07793905269 for further details. Sponsorship is also required for Tarporley Vics 1st & Reserve Team’s Home kits. The tremendous support we received from Peckforton Castle three years ago allowed us purchase a quality Nike kit. The kit however needs renewing this closed season and potential new sponsors are being sought. Please contact Mike Brereton if you know of anyone who is in a position to offer this support. Please contact Mike, Andy, Sean, Clive, Adam or Matt or any other Tarporley Vics members for any other Tarporley Vics info.
For further information on matches, training or sponsorship opportunities please view our website tarporleyvics.co.uk. Email us at tarporleyvics@gmail.com.
