Protection for our purrfect friends Why is it important to vaccinate our pets?

PuPPies and kittens are protected by their mother’s milk which remains in their system for up to 10 weeks. annual yearly vaccinations are important to keep those antibodies working to fight off infection and disease. l Dogs should be vaccinated against: Parvovirus, Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis and Kennel Cough l Cats should be vaccinated against: Leukaemia virus, Influenza and Enteritis l Rabbits should be vaccinated against: Myxomatosis and HVD although some of these diseases are treatable, most are fatal and it is therefore wise to vaccinate in order to prevent serious illness or even death.

Did you know that in 2013/14… 974 dogs had kennel cough and 79 had parvovirus

481 cats had cat-flu and 37 had Feline Leukaemia virus 91 rabbits had myxomatosis – a fatal disease Don’t let your pet be a statistic!

If it is over 12 months since your pet was vaccinated, a course of two injections may be required. Birch Heath Veterinary Clinic is offering a vaccine course for the price of a simple booster during April and May 2015. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Tarporley, Tattenhall, Kelsall, Tarvin &

Bunbury areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends

and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER

Best Kept Village Competition Best Kept Village judging is about to start again and will continue throughout the summer. We were disappointed to be placed second in our group in last year’s competition but were happy to congratulate Kelsall, who were the winners on that occasion. In most judging categories we scored very highly. Particularly singled out for praise were the shops, pubs and restaurants. Away from High Street the allotments received especial praise and the churchyards, cemetery, school grounds were well regarded. The parish council planters and flower beds also scored highly but, as usual, the lamp standard displays, provided by CWaC, contained only weeds. Weeds were a general problem last year, particularly in the car parks and the ailing Royal British Legion club and bowling green. This year the parish council are improving some of the existing planted areas, particularly

PROPOSED DEVELOPMENTS l Pursuant to its declared policy, Tarporley Parish Council will hold a public meeting at Tarporley Community Centre on Monday 30th March at 7pm to gather residents’ for the erection of 48 dwellings at the rear of 2A High Street (Brickfield Farm) (Application 15/00700/FUL). l This will be followed by the opportunity to express views on the reserved matters (detail layout and design) for the approved (11/04261/OUT) development of up to 100 houses off Nantwich Road (15/00815/REM Land Rear of 3-9 Springhill).

the rear of Burton Square, and introducing some new features, including the village entrance from the roundabout. There is also a hope that a renewed attempt to landscape the roundabout itself will meet with success. We want to make the village as attractive as possible, not only for the competition but also for the enjoyment of residents and visitors. If you see anything that needs attention or could be improved, please let us know. Contacts for your parish council are opposite. Particular areas of risk are litter, weeds, dog fouling, graffiti and chewing gum deposits, all of which are individually marked, so we must strive to eliminate these as far as possible. We would, of course, be happy for residents to tackle minor issues themselves or indeed to adopt small areas or features and set about maintaining or improving them, for instance by repainting or tidying and planting. Such projects might only take a small amount of time but can make a big difference to the ‘feel’ of the community. Footpath update You can now walk the route from Forest Road to Heath Green without climbing any stiles. The Parish Council, Cheshire West and Chester’s Public Rights of Way Officer for the area and the landowner have worked together to improve the route. To make it as accessible as possible, pedestrian gates have been used instead of kissing gates. You can use the route with a pram or a wheelchair if you are strong enough to manage a steep ramp up to one of the gates. We agreed with the landowner to leave one of the stiles alongside the new gate because it is picturesque and children might enjoy climbing it.

Parish Council Meetings

The Parish Council meets in the Committee Room of the Community Centre at 7 pm on the second Monday of each month, with the exception of August. Meetings are open to the public, and start with an Open Forum session, during which members of the public can address the whole Council on matters of concern to them. Also the Parish Council holds a surgery at 6.30 pm prior to each Parish Council meeting when members of the public are welcome to discuss matters with councillors on an informal basis. New Councillors Needed In addition to a general election, May will see the end of the current term of office for parish councillors. For a variety of personal reasons, several of the longer serving members of Tarporley Parish Council will be stepping down on this occasion. The Council is well known as a vibrant and pro-active Quality Council and is looking for enthusiastic members of the community to replace the retiring councillors. The main requirement is a concern for the continued wellbeing of the village and its residents and

a willingness to work to achieve the best for our community. Full Council meetings are held on the second Monday of each month except August and informal meetings of special interest groups occur as required. These groups cover infrastructure and street scene issues, management of the cemetery etc.. We are also represented on local charitable trusts, school governing bodies and the Community Centre Management Committee. If you are interested in joining the council, please speak to one of the existing councillors or contact the parish clerk (details above).

The congregation has created ‘Project Nehemiah’, which will completely refurbish the facilities and fabric of the Victorian building. By adding such features as widening the main entrance points, levelling the floor and providing a flexible main area of the church, it will be providing the village with a multi-purpose community facility for the 21st century. The project will be funded by of collections, fund raising events and grant applications. A recent silent collection raised over £20,000. The fund raising events was formally launched by local MP Stephen O Brien last year , and to date various fund raising events have been held, including a Treasure Hunt, Coffee Morning, Art Exhibition/Sale by local artists, Food and Craft stalls and a safari supper! To date, the church has raised 30% of the total required. The next planned event is a Ceilidh in the Tarporley Community Centre, on Friday 8th May. Sensational Sensoria! Congratulations to Angela Bartlett who marked the launch of her Sensoria salon with a reception for local people, customers and businesses. Angela has run her eponymously titled salon from the Wild Boat Hotel for the last five years, but such has been its popularity that she has decided to change the name. Angela said: “When I first started it was just me but I thought that a new name should reflect the fact it is now the Sensoria team. There was a great turnout at the Beeston Suite at the Wild Boar, where Angela and members of staff were able to demonstrate some of the many treatments on offer. The evening was marked with a cake cutting ceremony to celebrate the launch - and Angela’s birthday!

Your peregrines need you In 2008 three peregrine chicks were stolen from their nest at Beeston Castle. Since then a 24/7 watch has been mounted during their breeding season (which is usually April/May/June) when they successfully raised four chicks in 2014. The protection group are looking for volunteers in order that we can maintain our 24 hour coverage which generally involves four hour shifts. The scheme by Bloor Homes was opposed by most of the 40 people who attended a public meeting in early March. Their main concerns are the extra traffic, parking and excessive demands on an already inadequate sewage system. If the proposals go ahead, this would take the amount of approved new housing in the village to 190 homes. Bunbury Draft Neighbourhood Plan The draft Neighbourhood Plan Draft Policies are now on the web site www.bunburynpg. org A Policy Questionnaire will be distributed at the end of March 2015 and the responses should be returned by Friday 20th April. On Saturday 18th April we will be outside the Co-op Store in Bunbury to answer any questions and to remind people to respond to the questionnaire, as their views on the future of the village are essential to the success of the plan. There will be a public meeting on Monday 27th April in Bunbury Village Hall at 7pm. This is your opportunity to tell us what you think about the plan and to discuss any points raised by the questionnaire, before the plan is formally submitted to the Council. 20 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.tarporleytalk.com

Jack earns his stripes! Eaton Primary School held an exciting competition to enhance their school uniform. All pupils were offered the chance to design a new school tie. Creative entries were received from almost half the school, using the school colours red and gold and the school logo, the Eaton Horn. They were colourful and bright, ranging from stripes to spots and even one with glitter! The winner was Jack Booth, from Year 5, and when his design was announced it was met with a cheer from children across the school hall. Close runners up were Hinata Greenland, Year 6 and Sophia Harvey, Year 2. Jack’s winning design will now be used to create a bespoke school tie to enhance the developing uniform at the school.

Look up....

and use all the space in your home

We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of

NEW

the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. TIME TO TALK.... I

f, like me, you feel you are a member of the so-called ‘Sandwich Generation’, you may often find yourself feeling not only emotionally but financially responsible for both your adult children and your longer-living parents. This can be a great source of stress as we watch our loved ones struggle and try to come to terms with the challenges of later life. There can be a temptation to rush to the rescue. So how do we prevent ourselves from creating a bigger problem? Like most human relationships it helps to talk, but when we are concerned about the health and welfare of our parents, when is the right time and what are the questions? Over the next three months I shall highlight some useful tips and possible solutions which I have found very helpful within my own family situation.

Pick the right time:

If you would like to discuss the many options available, please contact us on 01829 260280 to make an appointment. So you might ask:

• Avoid talking over the telephone, a face to face conversation always works better with sensitive subjects so take the time to sit down when no-one is in a hurry. • Ask questions rather than make statements so you can discuss their views, ideas and any concerns they may have. • Try to keep the conversation calm and reasoned. The subject of elderly care is a very emotional one so it is important to keep rash statements in check.

• Do you think some help around the house might be a good idea? • Do you still feel safe driving? • Is the garden becoming a chore rather than a joy? • Can you still manage the stairs safely? • Are you able to get into the bath/ shower easily? • Do you having any concerns about maintenance in the house? • Do you have trouble hearing the telephone or the door bell? • Are you eating properly and managing to keep warm?

Don’t expect instant solutions and be prepared to come back to the topic on another occasion which will enable all parties to consider the options. Difficult conversations and decisions can create a rollercoaster of emotions which can be very distressing to the whole family. Next month: How to be prepared and start planning

Isla’s the queen of beam and bars Year 8 pupil Isla Warr has recently become the Scottish Gymnastics Champion in her age group. She also won medals on the beam and the bars and is an outstanding gymnast who trains extremely hard.

This year Tarporley commemorated the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz in a very special way. Year 9 students took part in a series of student-led workshops designed by sixth form students Izzy Macphee and Isobel MacDonald who were inspired by their visit to Auschwitz last term. The final part of the day was the opportunity to hear the testimony of a Holocaust Survivor Uri Winterstein.

Sixth Form College GCSE pupils shine at Conway Art Residential A selection of gifted Year 10 & 11 Art & Design pupils took part in the prestigious annual Art residential at the Conway Centre, Anglesey. The students spent the weekend working alongside other talented pupils from across the county with practicing artists producing work centred on the theme of hard and soft structures. Pupils were divided into various groups with projects ranging from Paper moths to Renaissance portraiture to wire boats and handmade paper vessels. Accompanied by Mr Bowland, Head of Art, Ms Pattullo, Teacher of Art and Mr Voyce, Faculty Leader, pupils explored a range of materials and processes that really stretched their artistic talents, from large scale painting to delicate use of gold leaf.

Karters spring into action The first National Schools Karting event of the year took place at the Camberley Race Circuit in Surrey on the 7th of March, where conditions were near perfect for racing. Tarporley Karting Team (TKT) fielded a smaller than usual team, but were still very competitive. TKT had entries in only three of the seven different race classes for children aged 8 to 17 years old. This season has seen the introduction of a Cadet class for the very youngest drivers. In Class 7 TKM, where competitors compete in Karts with 100cc engines, all the TKT drivers finished in the top nine. From an overall field of 16 competitors from schools all over the country TKT’s Reece Griffiths came 2nd, Theo Hesketh was 3rd, Kurt Roberts finished 6th, with Amy Duke 7th and James Mills was 9th. In Class 14 (85cc Raket engines) TKT fielded four of the seven entrants, with our very own

Robbie White coming in 1st , Sam BaileySaltmarsh came 3rd ahead of his brother Jake in 6th. Special mention must go to Katie Pritchard though, who in her first competitive Class 14 race finished a commendable 4th. Well done Katie! Class 15 is where competitors’ race in the high powered Rotax karts, TKT fielded three drivers in a field of 14, and it’s well done to a fast improving Tommy Taylor who came 5th, ahead of team mates Fraser Sime 8th and Connor Bailey 9th. If anyone reading this is interested in finding out more about TKT or Natska and Schools Karting in general please contact Howard Malyon on 07887 626 320, or come along to a TKT club meeting at Tarporley High School (Wednesday evenings from 7-9 pm during School term time). You can also find information about Natska online and about TKT via our Facebook page. Pictured: James Mills, Amy Duke, Reece Griffiths, Theo Hesketh and Katie Pritchard.

health & beauty with Angela Bartlett

Power Treat Age Spots By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing

If you are over the age of 35 carry out a little test for me please. Look at the skin on the inside of your forearms and guess the age of the skin you are looking at. Now, repeat the process with the skin on the outside of your forearms and the backs of your hands. What is the difference in estimated skin age? I am guessing that you can see a difference of at least five to ten years depending on your age. The damaging and ageing effects of sunlight and light exposure is well known. In fact, scientific observations have been carried out between twins who have different occupations. The skin of a twin working in an outdoor job wearing no sunscreen can look as much as ten years older than the twin working in an indoor job with protection from UV light. This type of research blows out of the water the myth that the way skin ages is due to the genes you inherit from your parents; your skin age is mainly determined by environmental factors rather than your genetic predisposition. Brown spots, discoloration and uneven skin tone are all signs of pigmentation and can add up to twelve years to a person’s perceived age* The great thing is that there is a lot we can do now to help with prevention and cure of unwanted brown

marks caused by overexposure to light. The best preventative measure is the use of broad spectrum sunscreen. Look for Oleosome technology in your product which allows for increased SPF performance. The hyperpigmentation in skin is caused by melanocyte cells generating pigment-filled structures in the skin called melanosomes. There are now powerful active ingredients that can help to control melanin formation such as Oligopeptides, Niacinamide and Zinc Glycinate. Regular use of products containing these ingredients give good results. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is an excellent way of removing unwanted brown age marks, usually requiring only a few treatments to get superb results; and skin needling is also a very effective method of improving the appearance of skin discoloration. Both of these treatments have the positive side effect of stimulating collagen production to give softer, smoother, rejuvenated skin too. You can come in and see us for a skin consultation with a Wood’s lamp to reveal the extent of hyperpigmentation in your skin and an effective programme to meet your skins needs. *Fink B. et al (2006) Visible Skin Color Distribution Plays a Role in the Perception of Age, Attractiveness, and Health in Female Faces, Evolution and Human Behaviour 27(6):433-442

Legion site may be sold off At the meeting of the Tarporley Branch of the Legion in February members were informed that discussions had been held between the RBL Property Trust and Officers of the Tarporley Branch together with representatives of the Bowling Club and the Allotments Committee. Cheshire West and Chester Council and Tarporley Parish Council have been in discussions with The Royal British Legion concerning the future use of the site and the possible redevelopment in some way of the Club and car park area. It is hoped that a decision will be reached in the near future, but should the Legion eventually decide to sell this portion of the site then it would be on the market for two or three months to gauge interest. The Property Trust officer will draft an agreement with the Bowling Club. The

understanding is that if CWCC do not purchase the land then the whole site will be placed on the market for sale. If CWCC only wish to purchase the building and car park area it is possible that the RBL may retain the bowling green and allotments and rent them out, but their preferred option is to dispose of the whole site. A new tenancy agreement will be drawn up between the RBL and each individual allotment holder. It is anticipated that the rent will be in line with that paid by CW&C allotment holders. The whole site is now the responsibility of the Royal British Legion Property Division so the Tarporley Branch has no further authority in the matter. Monthly meetings will be held in The Foresters. There remains the problem of the organisation of the Annual Poppy Appeal.

Inheritance Tax could still threaten your f You may remember the Conservatives were planning to increase the Inheritance Tax (IHT) threshold to £1m if they won the General Election.

S

ubsequently, the new Coalition Government shelved it. But if you are thinking that you are unlikely to be affected by IHT, think again. More and more people are affected by IHT every year. It used to be a tax that was the preserve of the very wealthy, but escalating property values in the last ten years have put paid to that. For single people, Inheritance Tax applies at the top rate of 40% to assets worth over £325,000. This threshold is known as the nil band rate. For married couples and civil partnerships the threshold is £650,000. But the higher £650,000 limit only applies when assets are passed between spouses and civil partners and this figure reduces if any money is passed onto any of your benefactors during your lifetime. There are also other financial implications to consider, particularly if you are a widow, widower or divorcee. And with the threshold remaining unchanged by the coalition government

until at least 2015 and subject to further legislation the freeze will be extended up to and including the 2017/2018 tax year, more people could get sucked in as the minimum IHT threshold usually increases at a rate equivalent to at least inflation. Pearson Financial Management, a local Senior Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management, is concerned that most people do not understand the implications of IHT. “It’s clear that people are confused by IHT policy and many mistakenly believe they are unlikely to be affected by it,” he said. And he is also concerned about a potentially more serious knock-on effect. “A Will* is vital in helping mitigate IHT,” said Philip. “Without a proper Will, people run the risk of their estate being severely reduced through IHT and also leaving themselves exposed to the ravages of long term care

costs later in life. It’s now more important than ever to seek professional advice and establish how you can protect your hard earned assets.” If you are uncertain about how you stand regarding IHT and would like to know more about how to prevent much of your money falling into the hands of Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs, or your Local Authority through Long Term Care fees, book your consultation today. For further information or to request your complimentary guide to Inheritance Tax please contact Pearson Financial Management of St. James’s Place Wealth Management. Pearson Financial Management can be contacted by phone on 01829 732450 or by email on ann.pearson@sjpp.co.uk. Pearson Financial Management, with over 20 years experience, is a family business based in Cheshire

What our clients say; “I have always received a first class service. Philip Pearson conducts all business with total integrity and complete professionalism. He provides honest and trustworthy advice without any sales pressure. He listens carefully, understands my requirements and has provided an excellent balance of investments. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone.” Mrs J. Hallett

“I spoke to a couple of financial advisors when I retired and they focussed on the money. When I met Phil it was a nice surprise as he focussed on me. His philosophy was different in that he was genuinely interested in improving my quality of life. Phil explained everything to me in a simple easy to understand language. I took the decision to invest with him and have never regretted it. He is always easy to contact and happy to help.” Retired Superintendent, David Wilkinson

Onwards and upwards fo T arvin Tennis Club held its AGM at the Vicar’s Cross Golf Club recently.

Members heard encouraging reports from the Chairman, Rob Millar, Treasurer, Allyson Clarkson and Men’s Captain, Chris Edwards and they, together with Secretary Felicity Pochin, Ladies’ Captain Julia Burgess and the other eight members of the committee were re-elected en bloc for the 2015-16 season.

The cups and trophies for the Club Tournament competition were formally presented by President Barry Cooper, who also congratulated and thanked the whole committee for their efficient and hardworking running of the club. The Club continues to field five senior teams in both winter and summer and a junior team in the summer. It has a popular junior coaching scheme run by our coach Gary, who hopes to extend his coaching time once the Club has completed its improvement programme. Members heard that thanks to the generosity

of Sport England the Club hopes to bring the playing conditions up to, or closer to, the standard of nearly every other club we meet in the various leagues, big and small, by installing floodlights and by extending the clubhouse facilities - an exciting project which has already involved a lot of hard work in the planning and preparation. After the meeting members enjoyed a hot buffet supper followed by a quiz.

National Trust claim hea will benefit Bickerton H L

ast month we featured a piece on the ‘destruction’ of Bickerton Hill which aroused plenty of interest from the magazine and on-line.

The National Trust is seeking to restore the heathland habitat to something like its original form – but this has meant removing lots of plantlife and stripping the hill so it looks like an alien planet. Here, Deborah Smith, from the National Trust, seeks to explain their motives for doing the work and why it is important for the long term future of Bickerton Hill. Bickerton is a fine example of lowland heath and its associated heathland ecology, which is one of the rarest, most threatened - and yet most ecologically diverse habitat types. Cheshire is fortunate to retain such a valuable site with such opportunity for enhancement and conservation. Lowland heath is now extremely rare and threatened in the UK and worldwide, and is widely misunderstood - and Bickerton Hill is considered to be one of the best examples of this type of habitat in the country. As such, it is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). It comprises well in excess of half the remaining threatened habitat of dry heathland in Cheshire. Bickerton Hill was gifted to the National Trust in two parts, the first in 1982, with the expectation of the benefactor’s estate that restoration of the heathland habitat would be implemented. This remains their position. The natural ecology of Bickerton Hill For possibly 3,000 years, until the 1940s, the landscape of Bickerton Hill was entirely one of lowland heath, the only trees being present in boundary hedgerows. The heath at Bickerton,

together with vast areas of Britain, developed over many centuries and was maintained by perpetual grazing of livestock such as sheep and cattle.

Following a decline in grazing during the 1940s, due to a combination of agricultural economics and the need for the site as a military training area, grazing ceased and the landscape began to be taken over by selfseeding birch. Any seedlings which had always previously browsed by livestock, began to develop and create shade which prevents the growth of the natural heathland vegetation, such as bilberry and heather, with consequent adverse impact on heathland specific wildlife species including adders, slow-worms, lizards, the green hairstreak and silver-studded blue butterflies, nightjars and numerous other invertebrate species, which need open space in which to thrive. These and numerous other species rapidly declined in numbers and many are now on the ‘red data’ list of endangered species, threatened with extinction. From a nature conservation perspective, the dry, sandy lowland heathland is by far the most important feature of the hill. Working towards ‘favourable status’ In order to return the SSSI towards ‘favourable’ site status, i.e. that at least 50% of the site is returned to lowland heath, Natural

eathland restoration Hill in the long run Bickerton Hill as it is now

England has directed that this tree removal programme take place. I can assure you, that projects such as this are sanctioned, quite appropriately at senior levels through the necessary protocols and statutory permissions.

Recent work is simply a part of a long-term plan, running since 1992, to restore and improve the condition of the landscape and ecology of this precious place - and includes removal of trees which selfseeded between the end of the Second World War and the present day. If the presence of so many trees is allowed to continue and their numbers increase, this will ultimately destroy this rare example of this habitat. There are no veteran trees involved, and blocks of woodland will be retained as well as a proportion of trees within other areas, typically, oaks, rowans, holly etc. to provide diversity and interest. Around 50% of the SSSI remains as woodland. The effect of tree removal will be to multiply wildlife opportunity by enhancing the habitat of lowland heathland reliant organisms including the adder, glow worm, common lizard (which are not common any more), green hairstreak butterfly, and other ‘red data’ species. We know that certain invertebrate and bird species at least, present at Bickerton within recent

decades, are now extinct in the county. The heathland ‘seed-bank’ still remains beneath the relatively young trees and felling will ensure light reaches the ground which encourages germination of the dormant seeds. So over forthcoming years, heather and bilberry and other heathland species will flourish. The future Work over recent years has seen remarkable improvements in the quality and extent of heathland on the hill and with it associated wildlife, but heathland restoration is a lengthy process and the wider re-establishment of heather and bilberry etc. will take years, but with a reduced threat from birch seeding, combined with grazing, there is every chance that the already high quality habitat will become greater still. Any disturbed ground is purely temporary, indeed, we fully expect areas which have seen any disturbance, to be those where heather and bilberry ultimately recover most quickly, as their dormant seeds are invigorated by this. Stumps will decay in a few years, in the process providing valuable dead-wood habitat. I recognise that change is something which people often find hard to accept, it generates an emotive response which can cloud objectivity, but in reality, the trees on the hill are just a recent change from an otherwise constant landscape of heathland, which has remained unchanged for many centuries - and which our forebears must have valued with each generation. l For more information about heathland restoration work by the National Trust and its partners at Bickerton Hill, you may like to visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/northwest

FOOTBALL TALK...

TARPORLEY VICS FC

Cup run ends in semi shoot-out agony Tarporley Vic’s First Team disappointingly lost their recent Crewe & District FA Challenge Cup semi-final v Congleton Town Vale after losing a penalty shoot out by five penalties to four. Neither Team scored in 90 minutes of normal time however a great strike by Sam Lloyd put Tarporley in front in the first half of extra-time. With only three minutes remaining Congleton were awarded a disputed penalty and this was duly despatched to Tarporley Vic’s frustration. Tarporley Goal-keeper Dave McNeil was unable to save any of the Congleton penalties whereas Congleton’s Goalie saved one of Tarporley spot kick to award the tie to Congleton. Good luck to Congleton in the Final, where they will meet Division One title contenders Crewe FC.

Tarporley Vics Reserves beat Sandbach Curshaws and Sandbach Town in two important League games during the last month and now know that they will challenge for the League title if the win all their four remaining matches. The Crewe Junior Cup Semi v Sandbach Curshaws was postponed during March, however we hope to report that the re-arranged tie will result in a May Final for Tarporley Vics Reserves

Tarporley Vic’s First Team lost two League games during the month and won one match, with the results lowering the expectation of finishing in the top six of the League this year. The defeat to Middlewich Town was to be expected, however the loss at Daten was disappointing. The visit of third placed Golbourne Sports FC later in the month however was an excellent performance which saw Tarporley Vics win 3-2 and claim three vital points. Mike Parker scored one of the gaols, finishing one of the best team moves of this season, and Sam Lloyd scored two penalty kicks.

Visitors welcome. Come and join in our workshop and take home your display (bring scissors) More information 01829 75294. Peckforton and Beeston WI February brought a visit to see Top Hat which was very much enjoyed and an entry in the County Quiz. Our team made an impressive start but, unfortunately, were unable to sustain their achievement. Jean Finney kept us amused at our March meeting with her tales about Joyce Grenfell and impersonations of some of Joyce’s well known ‘comic turns’ and songs. Joyce was a member of the “Upper Class” and used her experiences of her privileged upbringing, having nannies, becoming a debutante, going to drama school and later working as a drama critic to build a very successful career as an entertainer. Our next meeting is on 1st April when Roger Nutter will tell us how to “Garden for Wildlife”. Margaret Ellis 01829 261898.
