Big improvements to Cotebrook Village Hall The local community of Cotebrook are set to get their village hall extended and modernised thanks to a £61,720 grant from funding body WREN. The money, awarded by WREN’s Community Action Fund, will be used to modernise Cotebrook Village Hall, in Stable Lane, Cotebrook. Judith Walters, chairwoman of the management committee, believes the facility will make a huge difference to the lives of the people living in the area. Judith says: “This project will provide a real boost to the local community of Cotebrook. It’s fantastic that WREN has awarded us this money and we’re really looking forward to the refurbishment of our village hall taking shape over the next year. WREN is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for, community, biodiversity and heritage projects from funds donated by FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund. It is hoped that the refurbished hall will be finished by the end of this year. It will extend the facilities by providing an extra room in addition to the main hall, allowing the local community to participate in more activities. The toilets will be modernised while also providing a new wheelchair accessible cubicle. The kitchen will be increased in size to accommodate events that require more extensive catering facilities. The front of the hall will be rebuilt with a new façade making the hall more appealing externally.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HAVING A LOCAL RESPITE HOSPITAL? In February we launched our ‘Charity of the Month’ and Alzheimer’s North West are the first to benefit. Due to people liking, commenting and sharing our facebook page we are so pleased to announce that we reached our target and have sent our donation of £100. Currently we are raising funds for Tarporley War Memorial Hospital which has served our local community for nearly 100 years. They provide a much needed facility for respite and re-habilitation along with an array of clinics ranging from Minor Surgery, Outpatients Physiotherapy and extended GP services. Most importantly, they provide 16 inpatient beds for hospital referrals and Palliative care. Funding Tarporley Hospital has to raise 70% of their funds and have a marvellous team of volunteers and fundraisers. They play such a vital part in our local community; rehabilitating elderly people so they can return home as soon as possible, taking a huge burden off the NHS. Surely our local hospitals are the answer to the bed blocking problems in the general hospitals and I cannot believe this is not more cost effective. Is it not time the Government used a bit of logic?

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL Newsletter Tarporley Remembers 2018

Firstly, a big thank you to Emma Hunter and Victoria Williams who have created and organised Tarporley Remembers 2018 – a year long series of events and installations to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ending of World War One. Thanks also to all the volunteers and sponsors who are helping make this possible.

Silent Soldiers

The three, metal cut-out “Silent Soldier” figures placed around the village have been well received.

There But Not There

Hopefully you were able to take part in the There But Not There procession on Sunday 18th March and installation of our soldier silhouettes in St Helen’s Church prior to Easter. If you missed it, these silhouettes will be making a tour around the churches and other venues in Tarporley, to return to St Helen’s for Remembrance Sunday in November.

Memorial Walk

Plans are afoot to install the memorial walk on the meadow area by the Done Room and people should be able to visit it from the end of April / early May.

Tarp Fest

Working with The Swan and other High Street venues, we are planning to have a village-wide celebration on 22nd – 24th June with food, drink, and music. Watch this space and follow www. facebook.com/tarporleyremembers/ for more plans.

Sharing your Stories

If you have any stories of your friends or family from WW1, we would love to hear them. Please call 01829 310212 or email tarporleyremembers2018@gmail.com. Already some interesting material has been collected about the “boys” from Tarporley. 12 To advertise call 01244 350398

Village Improvements

If things have gone according to plan in March, two significant improvements will have been completed. Firstly, the benches and village notice boards on the High Street near St Helen’s Church have been replaced. These has been funded by the Parish Council, in part using contributions arising from housing developments over recent years. Secondly, Lychgate Lane has been re-surfaced. This has been a joint venture between the Parish Council, St Helen’s Church and the residents of Lychgate Lane.

20mph Signs

Cheshire West and Chester Council have implemented their new 20 MPH Speed Limit Policy in Tarporley. Delays in erecting the 20 MPH signs has caused some confusion, particularly on the approach into the village from the Rode Street roundabout. The delays were caused by the long cold spell in early March. The same team who erect these signs also grit the roads and they can’t work day and night!

Time Limited Parking and New Double Yellow Lines

The new time limited parking bays and double yellow lines will be implemented soon, probably in May, on the High Street, Eaton Road, Bowmere Road and Lychgate Lane, in accordance with the scheme that was subject to various consultations over the last year.

Naming The New Car Park

Solicitors are working on the transfer to the Parish Council of the Bowling Green, Allotments and new car park on the site of the now demolished RBL club house. Meanwhile, residents and school children have been suggesting names for the new car park and access road. Thank you for all your suggestions. No names have yet been decided but there has been a good selection to choose from.

At the time of writing, the school is looking for a lollypop person to help students across the road safely at the beginning and end of each school day. Please contact the school for more information.

The Annual Parish Event will be held in the Community Centre on Saturday 12th May between 10am and 12 noon. Adventurous Alex is ready for his next uphill struggle Kelsall’s resident adventurer, author and fundraiser, Alex Staniforth, will be leading a new outdoor experience weekend aimed at supporting those facing mental illness. Based in the Lake District, “Mind Over Mountains” aims to harness the benefits of hill-walking for managing mental and physical health challenges, allowing the chance to ‘step back and return home more resilient and confident’. Participants will walk two of the best-loved UK mountains, Skiddaw and Blencathra, whilst staying at the highest bunkhouse in the British Isles – YHA Skiddaw Bunkhouse - which is only accessible on foot and without mains electricity. The inclusive weekend will also feature coaching, workshops, talks and outdoor team activities in a supportive environment, all aimed at developing mental resilience and confidence to boost mental wellbeing. Alex will be joined by fellow Kelsall-resident and coach, Chris Spray, who will deliver workshops on NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) during the weekend. The group will also take away outdoor survival skills and mindfulness from Cheshire outdoor bushcraft instructor, Mike Henshall. Alex, 22, is continuing his work to support

those with mental health after a recordbreaking challenge last year saw him climb all 100 UK county tops in a self-titled challenge ‘Climb The UK’ of walking, cycling, running and kayaking over 5,000 miles in 72 days. In raising over £25,000 for Young Minds UK, he also won the Pride of Britain Granada Reports ‘Fundraiser of the Year’. Openly sharing his own struggle with depression, anxiety and eating disorders, Alex said: “Outdoor challenges have been the solution to my own mental health battles, so I’m very excited to be working with Adventure Uncovered to help others harness the power of the outdoors for themselves. We couldn’t have a better place for this than the stunning Lake District. Mental illness can feel like an uphill battle but one I believe can be fought with uphill effort.” Alex is an endurance adventurer, inspirational speaker, author and charity ambassador from Cheshire. He has made two attempts to climb Mt. Everest and completed numerous endurance challenges. General places are limited to 20 on a first-come-first-served basis. TARPORLEY HIGH SCHOOL & SIXT

Students see justice being done

Students from Tarporley Sixth Form College visited Chester Crown Court where they were able to sit in on a real trial. It allowed them to further understand about crime and punishment, which was particularly useful for those intending to study law. The cases were many and varied, including one individual who was guilty of 144 instances of dishonesty-based crimes and a young man who sold cannabis.

Business students learn from an expert Year 12 and 13 business students were treated to a presentation from James Timpson OBE. Students learned about the company’s culture and values and their work that they do with offenders.

XTH FORM COLLEGE Support for the hospital Six teams of Year 12 students are now competing in Tarporley War Memorial Hospital’s Fundraising Challenge. Students have been given £50 per team by the hospital and have been set the task to increase by as much as possible to raise money for the charity! Progress of all entrants will be on a leader board at the hospital, with other teams taking part too. The competition has definitely started at school with teams already doubling their initial investment. We will keep you posted on how well they do but if you come across any teams carrying out fundraising work, please do support where possible – every penny counts!

HEALTH & BEAUTY By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing

When is the best time to apply night time skin care products? By Angela Bartlett, Owner Sensoria Beauty Q. Is there an ‘optimum’ time when I should be applying my night time skin care products? A. Yes there is! The best time to apply active night skin care products is between 9pm and 11pm. This is because the skin is changing from ‘protect’ into ‘repair’ mode. Applying night repair products at this time of night will mean that the active ingredients in your cream will be used more effectively by your skin giving the best results. In addition, preparing your skin earlier than you would perhaps normally do helps you to ‘wind down’ from the day to start to prepare you for sleep. With around 45% of the population suffering some form of sleeping difficulty this may help. Read more about sleep and how important it is for skin care on the blog page at www.sensoriabeauty.co.uk Q. I have little red veins on my cheeks and nose. Can these be treated? A. Yes they can. We use either short wave diathermy and/or intense pulsed light to effectively eradicate these minor skin imperfections. This will give a clearer and ‘cooler’ look to the skin reducing the need to use concealer and foundation to cover them. Please be aware that whilst these treatments are suitable for most people there are some medical conditions that would restrict or prevent this type of treatment so please be sure to book for a full consultation prior to treatment. For the full article and our product recommendations please visit the blog page of our website at www.sensoriabeauty.co.uk

Army cadets remember the First World War fallen The Tarporley Detachment of Army Cadets are remembering the fallen from the First World War this year; the 100th anniversary of the Great War’s end. The Detachment is in the process of affiliating with the Tarporley Royal British Legion and is looking to support its many activities this year. An activity specifically planned by the detachment is their visit to Northern France and Belgium for battleground tours. The visit will last for three days in May and will give all involved many unforgettable experiences and feelings. Some of their time will be dedicated to visiting the Somme, Flanders Field and taking part in the last post at the Menin Gate in Ypres, where the cadets will be able to lay a wreath in the memory of soldiers fallen from Britain, Cheshire and specifically our town of Tarporley who died. The trip provides an unforgettable and moving experience that truly puts those four long years into perspective for the cadets. Any support to help the cadets with this trip, or the detachment in general would be greatly appreciated and you can reach the detachment commander at 4035rigde@armymail.mod.uk Or if you’re between 13-18 (or your child is) and you are interested in the Army Cadets, visit at 7.30-9.30pm on a Tuesday or Thursday at the rear of the Tarporley Community Centre!

Tarporley trio take big steps towards Ecuador visit Tarporley High School students Georgia Fellows, Anna Crayston and Holly Steward will be walking the 34 mile Sandstone Trail to raise money for their Camps International volunteer trip to Ecuador in the summer of 2019. Camps International was founded over 15 years ago. During this time over 22,000 volunteers have completed over 80,000 weeks of volunteering helping to change the lives of over 103,000 people living in rural communities such as Ecuador. Before their travel each student needs to raise £4,000. The girls are working hard on a variety of fundraising activities such as car boot sales, car washing, quiz nights and raffles. The core objectives of the four-week expedition are to undertake projects in order to raise educational and living standards in deprived local areas. Over 50% of the local community in Ecuador live below the poverty line. The three students will be helping to build local schools, plant trees in the Amazon Rainforest, protect endangered species’ habitats and remove plastic and other pollutants from the Pacific Ocean coastline. Their volunteer work will help local people and their children living in deprived areas towards a better future by alleviating some of the day to day issues being faced. The 34 mile walk will take place on the 7th and 8th April and promises to be challenging for the three students. Any support you can offer the girls in this life-changing opportunity would be greatly appreciated. The expedition is extremely important to the students who are determined to help underprivi-leged children and contribute positively to the environment. If you would like to contribute to the girls’ fundraiser please go to the Just Giving website and look for ‘ecuador2019sponsoredwalk’

hen the Queen turned 90 on 21 April, she served as a very public reminder of how much longer, as a society, we are living. In her own family, four generations are now all alive at the same time, from the Queen herself down to her latest great grandchild, Princess Charlotte. An increasing number of families now find themselves in the same position, which has implications for financial planning. As a nonagenarian, Her Majesty is far from alone. The number of people over 90 years old rose by a third between 2002 and 2012, according to a report published by the Office for National Statistics in 20151. It also says that the number of over-85s in the UK is likely to more than double by 2039, to 3.4 million; longevity and the multi-generational family are here to stay2. Another key phenomenon that is changing is how we manage our wealth against the backdrop of a growing generational wealth gap. The economy was kind to those born in the years immediately after the Second World

War, and in the 1950s, but less so to those born in the 1980s and 1990s – the so-called ‘millennial generation’ – who are finding it harder to get jobs and to get onto the property ladder. It means many parents are having to support their children financially well into their adult lives. While our children are struggling with their finances, our parents are living longer. This has led to an increase in the need for long-term care, which is likely to be financed from accumulated savings, selling the family home or with support from younger generations. This changing dynamic has raised the prospect of a renewed social contrast between the generations – the idea that we collectively support each other through the stages of our lives, and do so fairly. Thus, the prospect of transferring assets from one generation to the other, often within our own lifetimes, is becoming much more common. St. James’s Place provides a range of familyorientated financial products and services, enabling families to work collaboratively to support each

Sandstone Festival For its second year, The Sandstone Ridge Festival welcomes authors, musicians and artists to the event covering Bickley, Cholmondeley, Bickerton, Peckforton, Bunbury, Malpas, Burwardsley, Harthill and Tattenhall from 17th – 20th of May. Award-winning poet, historian and novelist Dr Gladys Mare Coles talks about Wilfred Owen, who was inspired to write poetry while walking in the Bickerton Hills. ‘Nuns and Roses’ is a musical extravaganza performed by Papagena, an all-female vocal group who explore music from medieval times to the present day. Well known Cheshire-born author (Home Fires, The Jam Busters), Julie Summers, talks about her book ‘The Secret Lives of Britain’s Country Houses 1939-45’ which offers behind-thescenes glimpses of life in some of Britain’s greatest country houses that were occupied by people who would never otherwise have set foot in such opulent surroundings.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

Splash of spring colour

Spring is well and truly underway and there is so much to choose from if you want to add new additions to your garden. Starting with the small perennials I suggest a bright yellow Allysum saxatilis and pink or mauve Aubretia to cascade over walls in sunny spots. Both perennials like a well drained soil. If you have a shadier place with a moist light soil then why not see if the delicate Dicentra Formosa likes your garden. It has lovely light blue grey filigree leaves with little white pink or deep pink flowers. The variety Bacchanal has deep red flowers. Lovely against darker foliage. If you want a spreading shrub or small tree then you should consider an Amelanchier lamarckii or one of the many named varieties of Amelanchier x grandiflora. These pretty shrubs have delicate white flowers in spring and bronzy young leaves. In autumn the foliage turns orange and red looking great against a green hedge or with a background of Rhododendrons. They will cope with any moist but well drained soil in any aspect and light shade. A spring flowering climber is easy as there are so many clematis to choose from. Try Clematis alpina Constance with the deep pink hanging bell like flowers. Easy to grow and likes sun or light shade by a fence. If it gets too big, take the shears to it after flowering but generally it does not need pruning. Work to do in your garden can include sowing seeds of annuals such as Calendula (Marigold) and planting out summer bulbs and corms such as Gladioli. Plant seeds of tomatoes, marrows and courgettes in pots on a windowsill inside or wait till May when temperatures are higher to plant out in the soil. If you have planted broad beans in pots, harden them off gradually and plant out in late April. Vegetables such as carrots, beetroot, radishes and lettuce can be sown directly into the soil. Look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Briarfield in Burton on the Wirral is open on Sunday 15th April 2 to 5 pm with 2 acres of lovely woodland planting, herbaceous borders and many unusual plants.
