MUDDY MARVELS THE Tarporley Carnival was once again a big success beating the doom-laden weather forecasts. Although the rain during the preceding week had left the field rather muddy! You can see pictures of the event in this month’s edition. We also have a tribute to Bunbury’s Ernest Croley, who has died at the age of 83, as well as news from the Cubs, Utkinton’s annual garden fete, Tarporley High School and the regular features such as the what’s on guide, business directory and health and beauty.

SCHOOLS OUT FOR SUMMER AND THE KIDS ARE COMING HOME!
Here comes ‘The Sandwich Generation’ again!
YES and hopefully we will have a summer as there will be plenty of holiday plans. Going abroad, stay vacations and grandchildren catching up with relatives. I always make my annual resolutions during the summer holidays. I make a list of the things I have not done in the past 12 months, the things I could better and the things that I am definitely not going to do anymore! For example, I never give enough time for me. I race around like a headless chicken trying to accommodate my work and family which is all very demanding. ‘I need more help,’ I say to myself, ‘but as I don’t time to train someone, I might as well do it myself’! Wrong! Having just had a lovely week in Mallorca with my oldest friend, we both realised the madness of trying to be all things to all people. After all we are getting older too. If there is an offer of help why do we not accept it? Why do we not delegate to other members of the family if the older members need care and support. ‘What a hypocrite,’ I think to myself. There I am passionately telling people about the benefits of using our carers to help to look after their relatives, whilst trying to be the all singing and all dancing mother and daughter.
I have written before about this. It’s those of us whose parents are living longer than ever before; a good thing. It’s those of us whose children who are not leaving home when expected; not always a good thing! Well guess what, my daughter has just returned from finishing her degree and as yet has nowhere else to go but home. I swore this would not happen to me, but here I am supporting and still financing (until she gets a job that is), which has just added to the load. I am sure there a many people in a similar situation, who have the responsibility for their parent’s welfare, whilst working hard and supporting their own children. So, rather than getting on my soap box about the benefits of using the Bunbury Care Agency, I appeal to all those experienced Live in and Daily Carers. Come and join us and help those of us who are being stretched to the limit. Take the pressure off the ‘The Sandwich Generation’ and make a difference to someone else’s life!

But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER Village parking Over 200 surveys were completed and returned to the Parish Council giving the views of local residents on how parking could be improved on the High Street. The results of the survey showed a consensus supporting the introduction of time limited parking on both sides of the high street between Monday and Friday. Taking these results into consideration and also the experience and knowledge from the highways department of CWAC, plans are now being drawn up for a trial scheme to be implemented on the high street. The scheme seeks to address several issues including improved traffic flow and an increase in the turnover of high street parking spaces. Additional consultation will be publicised over the coming weeks before any scheme is introduced, please check the Parish Council website and notice board for updates. Temporary closure of Tarporley Library Tarporley Library will be closed during the summer holidays due to major building works taking place at the High School. The high school is undergoing ÂŁ2.5M of improvement work that is scheduled to be completed in December. The Library closed on Monday 18th July and will reopen at 1:30pm on Thursday 8th September. Normal opening hours will resume from this point. Loans will not be due for return during this time, but can still be renewed online or by calling 0845 148 0148. Customers are invited to use other local libraries in Tarvin, Tattenhall, Sandiway and Winsford during the closure.
Tarporley Hospitals Giving Tree Thanks to the contact made by the Parish Council with Taylor Wimpey (the developers building the new houses off Brook Rd), the first step has been taken towards the installation of a Giving Tree at Tarporley War Memorial Hospital. Taylor Wimpey kindly supplied the MDF and the man power to install the board on the wall in the reception area, on which a tree is to be painted (early July) by Lorna Green. By giving a donation towards the valuable work of the Hospital, members of the public will be able to have their name or that of a relative inscribed on a leaf. For more information, please contact Karen Urmston at the Hospital Tel 01829 732436 fundraising@tarporleyhospital.co.uk 12 To advertise call 01244 350398
New Faces This month we welcome two new faces to our community. Abigail Webb has become the Parish Council’s first Projects Coordinator, she will be working with our current clerk, Ann Wright, to coordinate the many projects the Parish Council wishes to undertake over the next year or two. Some projects arise from the actions identified in the Neighbourhood Plan; others from our interest in the Best Kept Village Competition and others involve the amenities we provide, such as the Christmas lights, the playground behind the community centre and what will be the new leisure land off Brook Rd. She can be contacted at projects@tarporley.org.uk We also have a new policeman covering our area. PC Philip Monks has taken over from PC Wayne Thomas as the new beat manager for the Tarporley area. He will be supervising the work of our PCSO Kenneth Williamson.

Utkinton & Cotebrook Parish Council WHAT a month it has been … the EU Referendum result certainly took many by surprise, but now it’s down to the politicians to make it happen, if there are any parties left standing after all the resignations and challenges! l Annual Garden Fete – in conjunction with Willington and a splendid affair it was too; “Villagers from both Parishes enjoyed the picturesque surroundings of Tirley Garth Gardens with the lawns full of Gazebos, decorated with brightly-coloured bunting, to prepare for all weathers! The Utkinton School Rose Queens arrived in style to glorious sunshine, by horse-drawn carriage, greeted by Professor and Mrs Redmond. Tarporley High School ‘Blues Disciples’ Utkinton Rose Queen 2016 and the South Cheshire Ballet and Theatre Picture by David Carter School entertained us, with their music and dance displays and there was fun for all! Circus Skills with Lia the Acrobat, Coconut Shy and Hoopla, the Cheshire Fire Service, Tombola, Kid’s play equipment, ‘X’ marks the spot Treasure Hunt and the Raffle. Spectators and players enjoyed the football tournament and visitors relaxed over afternoon tea, courtesy of the W.I. in the tearooms.” Report from Liza Hardstaff. l New Parish Clerk – Sandie McBennett takes over from Alex Stubbs who has served for a number of years. We will miss Alex but here is what Sandie has to say; “I’m a seasoned Administrator and Clerk, fairly new to Parish Clerking having been appointed Clerk to Church Minshull Parish Council 18 months ago and Duddon shortly after. I have also been Clerk to the Governors at many CWAC Schools. I enjoy the role and supporting Councillors with the initiatives they champion and problems they help solve. Working for rural Parish Councils is very rewarding; I live in one too!” l The Defibrillator has landed … to be located at Rose farm Shop. We now begin to look for a coordinator and a number of first aid trained volunteers – if you can help please get in touch. l Playground update – We are in the midst of some fairly complex discussions with the Diocese of Chester (all the way up to Bishop Forster), CWaC, the school and the PTA about the lease and whether the school playing field has sufficient space to house a playground as well as the football field, running track and other elements – watch this space. l Housing Needs Survey –we got 22.5% response and the findings concurred, broadly, with those in the Parish Plan of 2013. We will be submitting it to CWaC as an addendum to our Parish Plan and an aid to decision making around the knotty subject of housing developments across our two villages – if you didn’t complete it please do so – more information is always welcome. It will be available on the website as a download soon. Frank Tunney Chair – Utkinton and Cotebrook Parish Council www.utkintonandcotebrook.com Utkinton and Cotebrook Community Pages

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Tarporley, Tattenhall, Kelsall, Tarvin &
Bunbury areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Cubs learn fire safety TARPORLEY Fire Station had a visit from 1st Tarporley (Arderne) Cub group recently after they went along as part of their fire safety badge. The young people learnt about what they should do in the event of a fire from on-call Firefighter Paul Stafford, who spoke to the group about fire safety before giving them a tour of the fire station. Paul also showed the young people around the fire engine and they looked at some of the equipment the crew used before the group finally the got to squirt water from the hoses. He said: “The group had a great time at the fire station and we were able to give them some vital safety information to help them get their fire safety badge, but also to help keep them safe at home.” The group all went away with knowledge of fire safety and will no doubt get their badges presented shortly. Akela David Goodier attended with the cubs. He said: “Our cubs had a great time at the fire station and learnt lots of interesting fire safety facts and information to help them get their badges. Hopefully they will go home and pass this on to their families and friends to help keep them safe too. The best bit of the evening for the pack was definitely squirting water from the hose pipe which was great fun.” If any other local groups would to visit to Tarporley Fire Station then they should email feedback@cheshirefire.gov.uk

HEALTH & BEAUTY
MICRODERMABRASION By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing
Q. Do I need to use sunblock after a microdermabrasion treatment? A. For anyone who doesn’t know what microdermabrasion is, it’s a salon-only treatment that provides your skin with a deep exfoliation. There are two types of microdermabrasion and at Sensoria we use a free-flow crystal method which sprays the skin with a steady stream of crystals to slough off the top layer of dead skin cells, which are immediately ‘hoovered up’. It is most frequently used on the face and neck but can also be used on the chest, back and backs of hands for smoother, fresher looking skin. For a deeper understanding of the types of skin conditions and benefits that microdermabrasion can give take a look at the treatment area at www.sensoriabeauty.co.uk. As the top layers of epidermal cells are removed it is extremely important to always apply a complete sunblock to protect the skin when leaving the salon and at home. Q. I’m nervous about having a Hollywood wax! Will it hurt? A. Of course you will feel hair being removed, but the amount of discomfort depends on a variety of factors. My three top tips for a comfortable Hollywood wax is to: 1. go to a ‘Waxpert’. Any intimate waxing should not be attempted by Therapists without a good deal of waxing experience. 2. only have the service carried out with hard wax (not strip wax) as this type of wax only adheres to the hairs and not the skin. 3. if you have never had waxing before consider starting with a standard or brief bikini wax first and build up to a Hollywood wax, this will help you to gain confidence in your waxing Therapist and avoid any necessary nerves. 44 To advertise call 01244 350398

Bunbury watermill saviour Ernest Croley dies, aged 83 The death has been announced of well-known Bunbury resident Ernest Croley. Ernest, who was 83, was perhaps best known for his work as a volunteer with Bunbury Mill, which he worked on restoring right up to his death. The village holds many prominent and long-lasting memorials to his undaunted determination and commitment to major schemes for its enhancement and preservation, including the village hall, Sadlers Wells wood, and the village playing fields. The present Bunbury Mill was built in about 1840 on the site of a previous mill destroyed by fire. It operated commercially until 1960, when it was put out of action by a major flood. The living was by then so sparse that the mill was not worth repairing, and it was boarded up and left to go derelict. The land was later sold to the local authority, then passed to the NW Water Authority, for the construction of a waste water treatment plant. The NWWA drew up plans which included demolition of ‘the old buildings on the site’. Enter Ernest Croley - he led a group of men who discovered what was in the buildings, and successfully lobbied the NWWA to sponsor a Job Creation Scheme, which instead of demolishing the mill, restored it to operational

status, and opened it in 1977 as a working heritage museum. Without his intervention, this unique heritage would have long since disappeared, and thousands of visitors would have been deprived of the evocative experience of our operational Victorian mill. For many years the mill was operated by NWWA then United Utilities until 2009 when they ended their subsidy of the mill, and it was again closed down and left with no plans for the future. Enter again Ernest Croley - he formed an Action group which led to the creation of a charitable trust, the Bunbury Watermill Trust, and negotiated to buy the mill and grounds from UU and assemble a team of volunteers to manage, maintain and operate the mill. A mind-boggling undertaking, but undaunted, Ernest led the team that re-opened the mill in 2012. We are proud that since then over 6,000 people have enjoyed and learned from their step back into the environment of a working 19th century corn mill. Ernest played many roles in the volunteer force - he was the founder and until recently Chairman of the Bunbury Watermill Trust, he was active in maintenance work a, a relentless fund raiser, a well informed and genial tour guide, active in publicising the mill, and above all leading and coordinating the many diverse activities required of the mill team to ensure the continuation of the mill’s active existence. Quite simply - but for Ernest, there would no longer be a Bunbury MIll. The Watermill Trust said in a statement: “We remember with affection his work at the mill, and we resolve to continue his work in preserving Bunbury Mill as a cultural heritage for the foreseeable future in his memory.”

Short mat bowling at Tattenhall The Barbour Institute has now acquired two Short Mat Bowling sets, with bowls, which could be used by any clubs, groups or individuals and private parties. We shall soon be arranging a session where people can come and have a go and see what the game involves. It could even be possible to create a club who may like to play against other villages for example. Due to short mat bowls being played indoors it can be an all year round game. If the game is of interest to you in whatever capacity then please call Hilary on 01829 770516 to discuss further.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
HOT COLOURS FOR AUGUST
AUGUST is a month where perennials come to the fore with stunning colours and a plant for every type of soil. Daisy style flowers are always popular and one of the best for a sunny garden with soil that does not dry out are Heleniums. They grow to about 80cms tall and have yellow, orange or red flowers that last for a few weeks if you keep then dead headed. If you plant them in front of the potentially tall, light yellow daisy flowers of Helianthus Lemon Queen, you will get a long display of colour. Lemon Queen does need a heavier soil that does not dry out. For those with heavy wet soil, August is the best time of year for flowering. Two plants that will grow up each year from nothing to 2m are Eupatorium maculatum and Actaea simplex. Both like a fertile moisture retentive soil and are definitely for the back of the border. As you can see from the photo, the Eupatorium has tall stems topped with frothy heads of pink flowers and is planted behind Geranium Buxton Blue, a long flowering geranium. Actaea (previously known as Cimicifuga) simplex Brunette has dark purple foliage and the flowers are tall wands of white tapering bottlebrush flowers.
Another lovely climber for late summer is Clematis Perle d’Azur. This clematis has light blue blooms and has a long period of flowering. Plant with roses or to climb into a shrub that flowered earlier in the season and cut back hard in early spring to about 50cm. August is the last month to trim conifers so that new growth has time to mature before winter frosts. Plant seeds of Winter lettuce and Land Cress for salad leaves. Make sure your lift onions and dry in the sun before storage. Pumpkins and squashes can be lifted off the bare soil with straw to prevent damage. If you would like to visit gardens for ideas, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Laskey Farm, Thelwall near Warrington is open on 13th and 14th August and you can see late flowering herbaceous borders, water garden and prairie planting with drifts of perennials. The Birches Mollington, near Chester is also open on 13th and 14th August with herbaceous borders, a grass and fern area , orchard and vegetable garden.

Plant treats for garden lovers
Plant Hunters Fairs have three great gardening events coming up in the area bringing together some the country’s top specialist nurseries. It’s the time of year when gardeners want to top up the colour in their beds, borders and patio containers and you can be sure of finding some really exciting plants with something for every garden and plant lover backed up by honest, expert advice. The first fair on Sunday 21st August, is at the wonderful Abbeywood Gardens in Delamere, Cheshire. Entry to both the fair and gardens is just £3.00. The 6 acre gardens have plenty to see and enjoy. The garden is divided into separate areas, each with its own distinctive character and themed planting. The long flowering naturalistically planted herbaceous borders of the main garden, are divided by impressive yew hedges into the pool, chapel and pergola gardens each bursting with sensational colour. The exciting and vibrantly planted Christopher Lloyd inspired Exotic Garden is filled with Dahlias, Bananas, tender perennials and annuals is a real show stopper, plus a new fabulous prairie garden. before, serious consideration must be given now to how you will fund these fees without eroding your family’s legacy.
The guidelines state that anyone with assets over a threshold of £23,250 have to make a contribution towards their care fees, if not fund them altogether. As the average family home is now valued at £200,251 (Nationwide House Price Index, March 2016) any homeowner applying for state assistance with Long Term Care fees will almost certainly be refused. And with more of us needing Long Term Care as a result of living longer than ever
You may think you can avoid the problem by giving away your assets now and escaping the attention of your Local Authority in the future. However, under current rules, this would need to be done with caution as your Local Authority may have the power to include any gifted assets in their assessment, as if they had never been given away. The harsh reality therefore could be that you are still expected to pay for care, even though you no longer have the assets to cover these costs. This could mean a reliance on state provision, which would naturally reduce your

WHAT’S ON IN YOUR VILLAGE AUGUST Peckforton and Beeston WI The musical afternoon in aid of Tarporley Hospital was a huge success. Caroline Docherty accompanied the singing of popular songs by Carol Seed and David Lawrence, played a duet with a friend and there was also an amusing poem read by Celia Kinnersley. Excellent refreshments were served by Bunbury WI to whom we offer our grateful thanks. Caroline is to be congratulated on organising this event again which raised the magnificent amount of £570.80, because without her and her keyboard it would not have happened. Thank you to all who helped on the day and to those who provided the delicious cakes etc. After combining the proceeds of the afternoon with those of our Christmas raffle together with some generous donations we were able to present the Tarporley War Memorial Hospital with a cheque for £726.00. Our summer outing to Wedgwood World was most enjoyable, and we were all amazed by the sheer variety and volume of the ceramics on display, which illustrated the skill of the craftsmen employed over the years. Although many of the processes are now automated there is still a good deal of hand painting and finishing involved. Three of our members, Ann Wall, Judith
Sherren and Joan Smith received ‘Highly Commended’ for their handicraft entry in the Cheshire Show and are to be congratulated – well done! Our next hall meetings are on 3rd August (the Secrets of Handwriting) and 7th September (Red Poll Tales); we would welcome any visitors who would care to join us at Peckforton Village Hall at 7.30pm. Margaret Ellis, 01829 261898 The presentation to Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: president Ann Wall, Chris Davies and Caroline Docherty with a hospital staff member.
Tarporley WI We had a lovely warm day for our Garden Party in June, which was held this year at Bowmere Cottage in Tarporley. We all enjoyed the beautiful flowers, and sat in the sunshine enjoying tea, cakes and good company. Thank you to everyone who came along, to our hosts Romy and Tom, and for everyone who worked so hard to make this event such a success. Our July Pudding & Pimms party was great fun! Irene Ross was crowned this year’s pudding queen with her Rhubarb and Amaretti cake with Orange and Rosemary glaze. Thank you to all 11 entrants, it was so hard to choose! There is no meeting in August, our next meeting is on Wednesday 7th September. In the meantime, why not have a look at our new website: www. tarporleywi.org
