FESTIVE FUN CHRISTMAS comes to town in early December. On Friday 5th the Tarporley lights are switched on and the following day, it’s the turn of Tarvin for the Christmas festival. Please give the events your support and get into the Christmas spirit. Elsewhere in the magazine we’ve got news of Luke Jennings who has been presented with the Duke of Edinburgh gold award and we have the Rainbows of Tattenhall who spent a day learning how hospital surgeons do their work.

Posties’ tribute to tragic war trio The staff at Tarporley Royal Mail have put up a plaque in memory of three postmen who died during the First World War. The plaque, which was put up to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War, recognises the sacrifice made by George Stockton, Noah Morgan and William Henry Cooper. Pictured with the plaque and a commemorative wreath for Remembrance Day are Andrew Evans, Martin Vickers, Susanne Withe, Albert Withe and Ian Mullock.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Tarporley, Tattenhall, Kelsall, Tarvin &

Bunbury areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends

and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER Car parking survey confirms space shortage The results of the recent parking survey have now been received and are being considered by the parish council.

It also suggested that, until this is achieved, time-limited parking on High Street will have no effect.

Despite being carried out on what turned out to be a quiet day (why do surveys usually take place on non-typical days?), it confirmed that greater parking capacity is urgently needed in the village.

Recently there has been a public emphasis on expansion of the car park to the rear of the Rising Sun as a solution but all avenues are being explored to ease the problem.

Informal Neighbourhood Plan Consultation The Neighbourhood Plan Group would like to thank everyone who completed their questionnaire which was delivered to each household and business at the end of September. Over 90 people filled in the form and currently all the comments are being analysed. Overall people were very supportive of the policies being put forward in the Draft Neighbourhood Plan, and while some changes will be made in light of people’s comments, no major re-writing of the policies is anticipated.

Christmas Lights Event – Friday December 5th at 6 - 7pm under the Chestnut Tree.

The Parish Council would like to invite everyone to join them at their annual event to mark the turning on of the village’s Christmas lights. Father Christmas will also be there to meet the children as will a number of local charities raising money for their good causes. Tarporley Rotary Club will be selling roast chestnuts, Inner Wheel running a lucky dip for children and Tarporley Hospital will be providing mulled wine and mince pies. Do come along and listen to the Primary School choir singing Christmas songs and join in with singing Christmas carols too.

Good start for Bunbury’s fast track plan Residents of Bunbury, one of the few Cheshire villages put on the fast track to a Neighbourhood Plan, have just completed the first important stage of the process, with the completion of a community-wide questionnaire. The steering group eceived 285 responses, from 550 households.

The main areas highlighted by the completed questionnaires were presented at a public meeting on 24th November in Bunbury Village Hall when there was also the chance to question planning professionals. Using the information gathered from the questionnaire, and from the public meeting, the steering group is preparing a draft Neighbourhood Plan for consideration by the residents of Bunbury, leading to a referendum in early 2015, when residents will be able to vote on the proposed plan. More information is available on our website, bunburynpg.org and on Bunbury Village Hall notice board. You may also speak to the group by arrangement, at the beginning of one of our regular meetings. If you would like to contact us please use info@bunburynpg.org

Colour their lives forever

Tattenhall Rainbows celebrate girl power! It is not every day that five–sevenyear-olds get to be surgeons, radiographers, nurses, midwives and scientists for the day but that is exactly what 1st Tattenhall Rainbows got to do when they were selected to attend a celebration, going behind the scenes at Liverpool Women’s hospital. From the entire North West region, three Rainbow units were selected to attend the special event with Tattenhall Rainbows being lucky enough to be invited along. The event was held to celebrate United Nations ‘International Day of the girl’ which aimed to promote the message that, in the 21st century, girls could do anything including a huge range of careers as well as have children and raise a family. Exclusive access was given to the Rainbows who took part in such a huge range of activities such as visiting the research lab to be scientists, where they looked though microscopes, carried out experiments and studied how germs were spread. They also got to be nurses and take blood pressure, temperatures and bandage ‘patients’ as well as dressing up as surgeons to carry out an ‘operation’. A visit to the neonatal ward was also on the day’s timetable where the rainbows saw a 3lb baby and learnt all about the incubators and special equipment that help keep babies healthy. However the highlight for many was a visit to Ultrasound where they

saw a radiographer carry out a scan on an expectant mummy and actually saw a 28 week old baby wriggling inside her tummy! For the first time ever, the Rainbows were speechless! The day proved extremely inspiring for all with many Rainbows later telling their parents that they wanted to be doctors, nurses, surgeons or midwives when they grew up. There were also a few budding scientists returning to Tattenhall that day, declaring that ‘Scientists are so cool’. The message that ‘girls can do anything’ is definitely being heard loud and clear in Tattenhall!

We are the champions! Tarporley under 14 girls’ football team took part in the Chester & District Football Tournament at Christleton High School, writes Ciara Roche. Opposition included nine schools including Abbeygate, Bishops’, Queen’s Park High, Queen’s and Christleton. Overall, we won eight out of our 10 matches, drawing one and losing only one game in total. At the end of tournament presentation we sat there nervously, until our school was called out as overall champions. We had won! It was a great team performance, with some great saves from Lizzie and some excellent passes in midfield. As a team we scored over 20 goals, which we were really pleased about. It was a great tournament and great experience for the remainder of the season! Faultless display puts Lucy top of the podium LUCY Hassall, from Tarporley High School pulled off a stunning double victory in the recent showjumping competition at Wettenhall. Four Tarporley students took part in the event, which attracted horse riders from across the North of England. The team for the 85cm show jumping - Ellie Dawson, Rose Diggle, Emiily Sambrook and Lucy Hassall had a mixed experience, so once Ellie and Emily had jumped but collected a few faults, the decision was made for the others girls to ride as individuals. This allowed them to both have a crack at really going for it.

Rose had an unlucky knock-down with a quick time that would have had her in the top ten, but Lucy played a blinder and rode herself into a clear lead, with nearly two seconds to spare. She held the lead and finished there, out of 102 riders!. Again in the bigger class Rose and Lucy rode as individuals, with Lucy finishing top of the 80 riders, this time in the bigger 90-95cm class. Obviously this was a great result, and it reaffirms her as a great individual competitor. The win qualified for the national championships at Addington Manor in Buckinghamshire.!

Look up....

and use all the space in your home We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of

the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. Luke strikes gold! Luke Jennings was presented with his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award by Prince Edward at St James’s Palace. Luke, from Utkinton, and now a second year student at Loughborough University studying Sports Science and Exercise, started his gold award while in sixth form at Tarporley High School. During his award he had to learn a new skill, volunteer and undertake an expedition. His residential volunteering was with Derby Kids camp, an annual week long outdoor camp for disadvantaged children and children who will benefit from social or personal development or to provide a respite period for parents or carers. Luke enjoyed his experience so much at his first camp in 2013 he volunteered again in 2014 where he undertook the role of lead on outdoor activities and is hoping to continue volunteering at Derby Kids camp each year.

Follow Birch Heath Vet Clinic’s top tips to ensure a safe and happy Christmas: l Keep toxic and dangerous foods out of reach e.g. chocolate, raisins, and bones l Playful pets sometimes bite off more than they can chew: cats love tinsel, rabbits enjoy chewing fairy lights, and dogs like to play ball with baubles from the tree, all of which can result in disaster l Check your pets’ vaccination certificates are up to date if they are booked into a boarding kennel or cattery. l Make your pets a den or call into the clinic for pheromone plug in devices/ tablets which can help reduce anxiety, as many animals become stressed with fireworks, Christmas crackers and visitors. Ring Birch Heath Veterinary Clinic for advice, or to make an appointment for your pet.

Why you can’t rely on The problem wiTh willpower when we look to create positive change in our lives - such as to lose weight, commit to regular exercise or just work towards achieving a healthier lifestyle, we often believe that we must rely on willpower to make the changes necessary. The problem with this is that we only have limited reserves of willpower. Think of willpower like the battery charge level on your mobile phone. The more you use your phone, the faster it runs out of battery. Willpower is the same – the more you use it the faster it runs out.

Many things drain our willpower on a daily basis. From forcing ourselves out of our warm beds in the morning, to completing important work tasks and resisting the urge to reach for the chocolate bar hiding in the cupboard. Every little decision which requires us to use self-discipline depletes our willpower reserve for the day. By the end of a tough day, your willpower is likely to have run dry! It’s at this point that you are most likely to eat something you shouldn’t or invent an excuse to avoid your planned exercise for the evening. The hundreds of little decisions throughout the day have used up your willpower reserves and left you vulnerable to making choices that take your further away from your goals. It’s clear to see that we simply cannot rely on willpower to create change in our lives. We must do things a little differently.

Develop posiTive habiTs Developing habits is the best way to reduce your reliance on willpower. Once established, habits require minimal willpower and are extremely powerful. Think about it. How much willpower do you use to brush your teeth every night before you go to bed? My guess is not very much! This is because brushing your teeth is a habit. New habits don’t form overnight, so you have to work at them, but persevere and the rewards can be life changing. The key is to make sure that you don’t try to develop too many new habits at once. As one behaviour starts to become a habit in your life, you can use some of your freed up willpower to develop a new habit. As you develop new positive habits, over time you will require less and less willpower.

n willpower By Daniel Jones BSc, Instinct Wellness Don’t worry about starting too small. Smaller habits are sometimes better as they require less willpower at the beginning. Good habits to start with could include going to bed by 10pm, cutting out sugary breakfast cereals from your diet or exercising everyday.

unhealthy foods kept at home, you are forcing yourself to rely on willpower. Inevitably, when your willpower is running low you will eat that unhealthy food. So don’t give yourself a decision to make - keep your cupboards clean from unhealthy foods! To help with this when you go food shopping, make a list and stick to it.

Eliminating the choices available to you can also help to preserve precious willpower. If you want to lose weight or just eat healthily, but have

If you want to make exercise a part of your life, schedule your workout sessions ahead of time. Ideally work out with someone else who will help keep you

committed and accountable. This effectively removes the choice to miss the session if you don’t feel like exercising. Small forcing mechanisms like this can add up to make a big difference. We simply cannot rely on willpower alone if we want to create positive change in our lives. Look for ways to cut down on your choices and develop habits which will reduce your reliance on willpower and see how your life becomes healthier, more successful and less stressful!

Bunbury pupils make the write choice! Bunbury Aldersey CE Primary School are taking part in the BIC Back to School Collection Contest to see which school across the UK can save the most writing instruments from landfill. The school earns 2p for each pen they send in for recycling which they plan to use to benefit the children at both schools. The winning school also wins an additional

donation of £100, second prize is £75 and a third prize of £50 to the school, charity or non-profit of their choice. To help them in their efforts Bunbury Aldersey are asking local people and businesses to help them by dropping back their used writing instruments to the collection box in the schools reception during school hours.

Inheritance Tax could still threaten your f You may remember the Conservatives were planning to increase the Inheritance Tax (IHT) threshold to £1m if they won the General Election.

S

ubsequently, the new Coalition Government shelved it. But if you are thinking that you are unlikely to be affected by IHT, think again. More and more people are affected by IHT every year. It used to be a tax that was the preserve of the very wealthy, but escalating property values in the last ten years have put paid to that. For single people, Inheritance Tax applies at the top rate of 40% to assets worth over £325,000. This threshold is known as the nil band rate. For married couples and civil partnerships the threshold is £650,000. But the higher £650,000 limit only applies when assets are passed between spouses and civil partners and this figure reduces if any money is passed onto any of your benefactors during your lifetime. There are also other financial implications to consider, particularly if you are a widow, widower or divorcee. And with the threshold remaining unchanged by the coalition government

until at least 2015 and subject to further legislation the freeze will be extended up to and including the 2017/2018 tax year, more people could get sucked in as the minimum IHT threshold usually increases at a rate equivalent to at least inflation. Pearson Financial Management, a local Senior Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management, is concerned that most people do not understand the implications of IHT. “It’s clear that people are confused by IHT policy and many mistakenly believe they are unlikely to be affected by it,” he said. And he is also concerned about a potentially more serious knock-on effect. “A Will* is vital in helping mitigate IHT,” said Philip. “Without a proper Will, people run the risk of their estate being severely reduced through IHT and also leaving themselves exposed to the ravages of long term care

costs later in life. It’s now more important than ever to seek professional advice and establish how you can protect your hard earned assets.” If you are uncertain about how you stand regarding IHT and would like to know more about how to prevent much of your money falling into the hands of Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs, or your Local Authority through Long Term Care fees, book your consultation today. For further information or to request your complimentary guide to Inheritance Tax please contact Pearson Financial Management of St. James’s Place Wealth Management. “I spoke to a couple of financial advisors when I retired and they focussed on the money. When I met Phil it was a nice surprise as he focussed on me. His philosophy was different in that he was genuinely interested in improving my quality of life. Phil explained everything to me in a simple easy to understand language. I took the decision to invest with him and have never regretted it. He is always easy to contact and happy to help.” Retired Superintendent, David Wilkinson

health & beauty with Angela Bartlett

Q. I have some dark brown patches on my face that have appeared with age. I am 60 so would I be suitable to have them removed with IPL (intense pulsed light)? A. The majority of individuals are suitable for treatment except for very dark skinned or tanned people. However, a full consultation with a patch test is always carried out prior to treatment to assess if this is the best treatment for you. Very large, dark, mottled or raised pigmentation patches should not be treated without the authorisation of a dermatologist. The pigmented marks that respond best to treatment are superficial lesions that are caused by sun damage (sun spots) and freckles. These marks typically take between one and three sessions to fade and are treated very successfully. This is a great time of year to have IPL as daylight levels are low and you are less likely to be tanned so come in and see us to find out whether IPL is the correct treatment for you.

Q. I’ve been having electrolysis in a salon near to the place where I work. I have noticed that I can always feel each hair being removed from the hair follicle as if it is being plucked out. Is this correct? A. No it’s not correct, but it’s a common fault with electrolysis treatment. The correct sensation is that you shouldn’t feel the small probe sliding into the hair follicle, as it’s a natural, microscopic opening in the skin. You will feel the sensation of the current which is often like a small stinging feeling. There should be no sensation during removal of the hair as it should just be ‘lifted’ from the hair follicle with tweezers. If the hair is being plucked out the treatment will be ineffective which is a waste of your time and money and is preventing you from achieving the permanent hair removal results that you desire.

Historic Mill offered a 21st Century makeover Bunbury Watermill has been given the chance to improve its visitor experience with the announcement of a major refurbishment scheme.

new lighting to ensure that the Mill can be used during those dark winter evenings, re-plumbing to ensure higher sanitary standards and paving outside the visitor centre.

A grant of £12,500 will be used to tidy up the ancient mill and improve the visitor centre.

Ernest Croley, chairman of the Bunbury Mill Trust, said: “The work will start in the next few weeks. Soon afterwards we will be able to offer enhanced facilities to the many visitors who come to enjoy a much loved part of our heritage. All age groups are catered for, from school parties to pensioner groups, and those who just want a quiet cup of tea, or simply to enjoy the site. We give in excess of one thousand guided tours every year. Not bad for a bunch of volunteers!”

The Mill stands beside the River Gowy on a site that has been in use for more than 10 centuries. The present building was constructed in early Victorian times and most of the plant and machinery dates from that period. This means that the Mill has been serving the needs of Bunbury for a very long time, including giving sterling service during two world wars. The old Mill still works well to this day, producing flour using no more power than that offered by the massive waterwheel and the enthusiasm of local volunteers. Time has taken its toll however and there is now a need for some improvement work, the cost of which is beyond the means of a charitable organisation. The Trustees have prepared a refurbishment scheme which includes re-pointing the brickwork to dry out and stabilise the old mill building,

The funding is to be provided by WREN, a not for profit business which awards grants to community, heritage and environmental projects across the UK from resources donated by FCC Environment to the Landfill Communities Fund. Peter Cox, managing director of WREN, said: “We’re delighted to support the work of the Bunbury Watermill Trust and the local community in restoring the Mill and preserving a valuable heritage site for future generations”. Christmas at Blakemere

O

ur Christmas grotto is a must for the little ones this season. Each year we have more and more families visit us to meet Santa, with a new themed grotto each time for the children and adults to enjoy. A new system means less queuing time and some of that waiting will be spent inside where the children can take part in a craft activity to keep them entertained while the adults sit and watch. This year’s theme will be all made clear when the children arrive at the station! And then they will start their ‘journey’ to the North Pole. In our festive square you will also find a small fun fair each weekend and just outside next to the car park the Christmas land train will be waiting to take you on a trip around the site. Blakemere is host to over 30 unique shops and TARPORLEY TALK XMAS.pdf 1 27/10/2014 activities as well as a large licensed restaurant and

coffee bar serving daily specials, snacks, Christmas lunches and a variety of beverages for all ages making a day out to sample all Blakemere has to offer a great way to start your Christmas celebrations. There will be free regular entertainment in the bandstand in the centre of our Edwardian courtyard and the whole site will be decorated in traditional trimmings to make your visit feel as festive as possible. Our Breakfast with Santa weekend is one of our most popular events. Taking place on Saturday 20th & Sunday 21st December, have a full cooked family breakfast while the big man mingles with all the children, tells them stories of rudolph and his friends and hands out gifts to each child. Held in the large restaurant from 8am until 10.30am this is always a sell out so book your tickets early by 15:42 visiting our website or calling the main office.

Gardening by Janet Heath

Midwinter Cheer

The end of year is the best time to appreciate the evergreen plants, mainly shrubs and trees. Holly or Ilex is the classic Christmas shrub with dark glossy green leaves and red berries. Frost on the leaves gives them a magical Christmas touch. Hollies prefer a moist, well drained soil so heavy waterlogged clay is not recommended. There are many other evergreen shrubs with cream, yellow and green foliage which always cheer up a garden in winter. Ground cover Euonymus Emerald n Gold and the variety Emerald Gaiety will cover the soil under larger shrubs. Another green and yellow shrub is Elaeagnus x ebbingei Limelight that will grow in sun or shade and

brighten up darker areas in winter. Conifers come into their own in winter and I love the smaller trees with silvery blue foliage. The blue spruce Picea pungens Hoopsii has silvery, ice blue needles and would be suitable for moist but well drained acidic soil. Another conifer with similar coloured foliage is Abies concolor Compacta which is a smaller slow growing tree with silver grey needles. These two smaller trees would look great with Rhododendrons and underplanted with Euonymus to give year round colour. My favourite sight in winter is to see Dogwoods or Cornus with red or yellow coloured bark planted against silver birch with the winter sun giving a glowing colour. Cornus alba Elegantissima is

one of the best with rich red stems in winter and green with cream edged leaves in spring and summer. It is a vigorous grower and will thrive on well drained or heavier soils in sun. Cut the stems down to 30 cms every two or three years to promote new growth and bright red bark. Jobs to do in December are limited. Keep off lawns when frosted as you may cause damage to the grass by treading on it leaving a trail of footprint sized dead grass! Prune shrubs to shape. If you have ordered bare rooted, trees, shrubs or roses plant them out when the weather is dry and the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. If they arrive when conditions are not right for planting, plant them up in pots or heel them in where the soil is well drained.

Poppy Appeal collector’s long service award A presentation was made to Ernie Butcher, Tarporley Branch Secretary of the Royal British Legion to recognise his 10 years of service to the Poppy Appeal. The presentation was made by the MP for Eddisbury, Stephen O’Brien after the Remembrance Day service and parade on Sunday 9th November.

Parking problems The police in Tarporley have been meeting with parish councillors to come up with a solution for parking problems on the High Street. As we all know, It is often difficult for buses and other large vehicles to pass through. The local PCSO has also handed out several warnings to motorists who have parked on the double-yellow lines. Please

remember that it is an offence to park on yellow zig-zags and may result in you gaining three points on your license. l Police are also giving out advice to children about mobile phone use. Officers visited Tarporley Primary School to discuss the importance of using their mobile phones appropriately, for example not using applications such as Snapchat and Whatsapp to bully other children.

Monthly Newsletter - December 2014 Western Rural Police Team by Insp Keith Curbishley My recent weekly reports have highlighted a recent spate of thefts from barns, outbuildings and sheds, targeting equipment such as chain saws, generators and quad bikes. It is quite possible that the offenders are watching people who use such equipment and then following them home, to see where it is stored. If you own or store similar equipment, please be mindful of this possibility and ensure that your storage facility for it is adequate to prevent any possible attempt theft. Farms and isolated dwellings are particularly vulnerable to this type of crime. Police have also had reports about suspect vehicles approaching people and offering similar items for sale! It is highly likely that such property will be stolen. If you become aware of any such activity, please contact the police straight away and do not buy these items – it will only serve to create a ‘demand’ and encourage the offenders to commit more burglaries, thereby creating more victims of crime. At this time of year your home may well be in darkness before you get home from work, which advertises the fact that there may be no one home. Please review your home security and make sure that you have lights on timers to create the impression that someone is home. Also consider asking trusted neighbours to call in to draw curtains etc. • A shed was broken into at a property in Tiverton and a lawn mower was stolen. We receive an increase in reports of burglaries from outbuildings at this time of year as the evenings become darker and offenders strive to produce some quick cash before Christmas. • A property was broken into on Woodlands Way while the occupants were out. This is currently still under investigation. Consider leaving a light on if you are going out to make your property appear occupied. • Parking across zebra crossings on the High Street has been reported by several local residents. The owners of local businesses have been advised regarding staff parking and the area will continue to be monitored. Please refrain from stopping on zebra crossings, even if it just for a few minutes. Extra parking spaces have been created in the car park behind The Rising Sun pub so please take advantage of these. • Cold calling was reported at several properties in Eaton as a male approached houses offering to sell cleaning products. Although there is nothing to suggest that any offences have been made at this time, please do not feel pressurised into opening the door to strangers or anyone without identification. Certainly do not feel compelled to purchase any of the items on offer. • Anti-social behaviour was reported on Oathills Drive on the evening of 29th October when youths were observed throwing eggs at properties. FOOTBALL TALK...

TARPORLEY VICS FC

Cup success makes up for league struggles Tarporley Vic’s First Team were held to a 1-1 draw by Cuddington FC at the start of last month. This result was followed up with a 3-2 win over Middlewich Town FC and then a 4-1 win over Irlam FC Reserves. These results mean that Tarporley Vics First Team are still in contention to qualify from their group in the J A Walton Challenge Cup. In the only League game to be played over the last month Tarporley Vic’s First Team lost 2-1 to Grappenhall FC. They now sit on the Bottom of the Cheshire League 1st Division albeit with games in hand. Tarporley Vics Reserves continue to have mixed results mainly in Cup matches. They too also lost their only League game played in the last month being beaten 2-1 by Barnton Wanderers. Tarporley Vics were also invited into the Commander Ethleston Charity Cup and they reached the Semi Final where they were beaten by Whitchurch Alport. This annual competition dates back

to 1908 and was created in memory of Commander Alfred Peel Ethelston, who died in a naval battle during the Second Boer War in South Africa in 1899. After his death, the Royal Navy installed memorials of honour in his name at Portsmouth, Chatham, Plymouth and Dartmouth. From this desire to remember the Commander in his home town of Whitchurch, the Charity Cup Competition was born. The winners of the Competition are presented with the original silver plated trophy, which bears the Ethelston family crest and details of the naval battle in which Commander Ethelston lost his life. With a diameter of 500mm and a total cup and base height of 540mm, the trophy is larger than the original FA Cup. Free festive refreshments during the open day. Peckforton and Beeston WI November means AGM time and this year our President Liz Jones and our Catering Organizer Libby Warriner have both resigned from the committee and were presented with a gift in recognition of having served for many years for which we are very grateful. Two of our newer WI members have joined the committee and Ann Wall, our new President will lead us into 2015 - the WI Centenary Year. An excellent hot pot supper followed the AGM and we are now looking forward to learning how to be ‘expert gift wrappers’ at our next meeting on 3rd December and the Christmas Party on 12th December.

Tarporley WI The next Women’s Institute will take place on Wednesday 3rd December at 8:15pm at Tarporley British Legion.
