Happy Christmas to all our clients and pets

WHILE the holiday period is a time for celebration, decorations and plenty of food, the festive season can be dangerous for our pets. Follow Birch Heath Vet Clinic’s top tips to ensure a safe and happy Christmas: l Keep toxic and dangerous foods out of reach e.g. chocolate, raisins, and bones l Playful pets sometimes bite off more than they can chew: cats love tinsel, rabbits enjoy chewing fairy lights, and dogs like to play ball with baubles from the tree, all of which can result in disaster l Check your pets’ vaccination certificates are up to date if they are booked into a boarding kennel or cattery. l Make your pets a den or call into the clinic for pheromone plug in devices/ tablets which can help reduce anxiety, as many animals become stressed with fireworks, Christmas crackers and visitors.

Ring Birch Heath Veterinary Clinic for advice, or to make an appointment for your pet.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Tarporley, Tattenhall, Kelsall, Tarvin &

Bunbury areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends

and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Community ownership for Tarvin woodlands A CELEBRATION has taken place to mark the historic transfer of ownership from Cheshire West and Chester Council to a group of Trustees of Tarvin Community Woodlands. The freehold title of the land was transferred to the trustees of the Woodlands from Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) in December 2014, with the deeds being handed over recently during a special celebration held at Tarvin Primary School. Cllr Samantha Dixon, Leader of the Council, presented the deeds to the Trust on behalf of the Council. The presentation of transfer deeds is a considerable landmark for both the Trust and the Council. Ever since Tarvin Community Woodland Trust was set up in 1997 by Jim Grogan it has remained at the heart of the community. The land at Tarvin Community Woodland was formally handed over to the community by Cheshire West and Chester Council in 2009 on a 125-year lease, having previously functioned with a Gardening Licence, from the Highways Agency. This allowed the trustees to take responsibility for what happens to it, and to use the land as a public amenity. The transfer of the deeds will now allow the trustees to continue this and have full control over the land. The woodland covers 13 acres and was created from the part-fields left as a noise barrier when the A51 Tarvin Bypass was constructed in the 1980s. The trustees have proved themselves to be capable of caring for the woodlands well having been awarded six consecutive Green Flags from Keep Britain Tidy, for being one of the best run green spaces in the country.

John Sim, Charles Bradley, Noel Radcliffe who are all Trustees, Andrew Davies, Headteacher of Tarvin Primary School, and Pete Maiden and Bob Howard who are Trustees, Council leader Cllr Samantha Dixon and Chairman of the Trustees Stuart Exell. presented the sixth Green Flag to the woodland. Tarvin woodland is a very important part of Tarvin village. It is now a very well used public amenity with a central footpath running through open woodland, meadow and wildflower areas. Charles Bradley, Secretary of Tarvin Community Woodland Trust said: “The generous transfer by the Council of the ownership of the land marks the culmination of Jim Grogan’s vision – that Tarvin should have its own woodland space, provided by the Community for the Community. “We, and future generations of Trustees, will now care for and develop it as a green oasis in a busy world; to be used and enjoyed by everyone. Thank you, CWaC!”

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Winter skin care By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing

Q. Are there any special changes I should take with my skin care routine in Winter? A. Cold temperatures, harsh winds and central heating can all wreak havoc with your skin by challenging its barrier function and making your skin drier. The problem is that when the skin becomes depleted of its lipids (fats) it is easier for water to evaporate from the skins surface making your skin become more dehydrated. This increased TEWL (trans epidermal water loss) can be reduced by switching to a richer day and night cream and by replacing a foaming cleanser with a gentle cream cleansing product, if your skin is affected by these seasonal changes. Q. I always get a flushed, weathered look to my skin in the winter. Is there a treatment I can use to treat the broken capillaries/red veins on my cheeks? A. There are several effective methods that we use on our clients to treat broken capillaries, or telangiectasia as they are otherwise know. Short wave diathermy, which is a form of heat coagulation, is good for clearing small areas of capillaries. We have used skin needling (dermaroller) to good effect for skins needing strengthening and rejuvenation as well as red vein correction. We also employ IPL (intense pulsed light) treatments to treat larger areas of capillaries. The light targets haemoglobin pigment in the blood heating them to a point where they are removed. Winter is the perfect time for IPL because your skin is at its palest so IPL is safer and more effective. Visit the treatment section of sensoriabeauty.co.uk for more information about red vein treatments

Duddon St. Peter's C E Primary School

This term the teachers, pupils and some of the parents at Treetops Foundation Stage Unit, took an exciting trip to Hallé St Peter’s in Ancoats where they got to see Manchester’s awardwinning orchestra present David Mckee's celebration of individuality; Elmer The Patchwork Elephant performed live by part of the Hallé orchestra. The children were captivated as the Hallé musicians accompanied by a dancer bought the story to life in an interactive concert they all thoroughly enjoyed participating with the singing and dancing whilst waving their Elmer puppets in time to the music. The performance was a wonderful experience for the children linking with their current topic on elephants and it was a lovely introduction to instruments of the orchestra, with a score specially written by the Hallé's Education Director, Steve Pickett, based on the book ‘Elmer’ by David McKee, used with the kind permission of Andersen Press. A truly memorable day was had by everyone.

Allotments petition tops 1,200 THE potential loss of any valuable amenity can understandably arouse strong passions. So, when it became clear that Tarporley’s allotments and bowling green were under threat of development, many of the residents of Tarporley and outlying villages were especially outraged. This emotion reflected not only the longevity of use of the land for the benefit of Tarporley’s residents (bowls since the 1920s and allotments since the 1970s) but also the fact that the land is almost the last remaining leisure and recreational green space at the heart of the village. Attending the allotments and bowls Open Day in August were unexpectedly large numbers of visitors who were anxious to voice their feelings and offer support. For most, this meant signing one of the paper petitions which had been in circulation since Tarporley’s Carnival. These petitions were kindly hosted by Charles Hardy of the Old Fire Station Chocolate Shop, Graham Rathbone, Bowls Club, and Ian Swaffield, Barbers on the High St. In addition,

62 To advertise call 01244 350398

an e-petition was launched which is accessed via the new allotments and bowls website (www.tarporleyallotments.org.uk). The petitions have now been collected in and the results are clear. At time of writing, there were a total of 1,203 persons signing in agreement with the general sentiment that the allotments and bowls land should not be developed (the old RBL clubhouse and car park behind are not included within the scope of the petition). Fortunately, the recent Submission Version of Tarporley’s Neighbourhood Plan still classifies the allotments and bowling green as Protected Local Green Space. So, a strong level of protection continues and the hope for all allotmenteers and bowlers and many residents is that the developer will fail to circumvent the protection and so fail to gain planning consent. Carer Recruitment D LAST month the Bunbury Care Agency held a very successful recruitment day in Bunbury Village Hall, writes Lynne Bradley, from Tarporley Talk It was very interesting to hear about the range of experiences of the carers who attended, and of the difficulties they sometimes have in caring for the elderly. The agency’s current carers exchanged ideas with the potential new carers and it was all very engaging. They all agreed that it was essential to allow enough time

when visiting someone in their home as it makes a huge difference to the client’s life. From the carers perspective, it means they can do the job which they have been trained for, without compromise, which they said is far more rewarding. Agency owner Sarah Green, said “We have had an increased demand for daily care locally and want to attract the very best carers in the industry. As a result we have increased the hourly rate to £12 per hour weekdays and

£15 per hour at weekends but have reduced our fees to enable more people to benefit from our care services.” WORTHWHILE We spoke to Belinda Birkett who has spent many years working as a carer with Bunbury Agency. Her daughter Amanda has recently joined the team. They said “Every client is different and the agency fully briefs us not just about the care required but also about the client’s background and lifestyle. It’s not just about the

TARPORLEY HIGH SCHOOL & SIX If you go down to the woods today…

THIS term saw new GCSE students at Tarporley High School embrace the natural environment and in line with the national Big Draw event explore a range of approaches to drawing inspired by the work of contemporary landscape artists.

Accompanied by Ms Pattullo, Mr Bowland and Ms Lee pupils spent the day at Delamere forest responding to both the rolling hills, dappled sunlit trees and delicate crisp autumn leaves. Mr Bowland said of the experience, ‘What better way to start our pupils’ new artistic journey than to immerse them in our beautiful local environment. Pupils conducted themselves with incredible maturity and produced some truly wonderful work.’ Pupils will use their initial studies to inspire a range of creative outcomes back in the art studios. Further photographs of pupils work can be found on the Instagram feed under the username @ tarporleyarts Ships ahoy… Year 9 pupils, in line with the national Big Draw event were set the challenge of drawing the plethora of boats moored at the Albert Dock, Liverpool. Having looked at the work of a range of artists who use a variety of approaches to drawing boats and harbours, pupils set about producing a series of line drawings. Pupils will be developing their work back at school transforming their stunning line drawings into three dimensional wire boat sculptures. Further photographs of pupils work can be found on the Instagram feed under the username @tarporleyarts Into the dragons’ den Congratulations to Emma Bowser, Hope Dewson-Smyth, Abbey Humphreys, Michaela Cook, Megan Lovett and Eve Threlfall who have all submitted business plans (Emma and Hope as individuals!) to a competition led by Dragons’ Den star Peter Jones and have been given loans to now compete in the next stage. This is excellent for all the girls involved as it was a tough competition – we will keep you posted on the competition as it proceeds!

SIXTH FORM COLLEGE

l

Pupils are streets ahead! Year 7 pupils at Tarporley High School took part in the annual visit ‘Up Tarporley’s High Street’. The purpose of this trip is to carry out activities spanning the key humanities subjects and to gain a better understanding of the local area. Students were excited to make a visit to the Catholic and Methodist churches and some were even lucky enough to have a play of the organ. After drawing the different features of each religious building, students then took a walk further up the High Street. Here, they looked at the historical aspect of Tarporley including the buildings and cemetery and they took time to explore the war memorial and those named on it. The geography part of the morning looked at the local surroundings and involved doing pedestrian and traffic counts. It is fair to say that most students did not know Tarporley has such a rich and varied environment and Year 7 really enjoyed the experience of getting to know their new school’s location better.

Reading programme piloted Last month saw the launch of The National Literacy Trust’s Premier League Reading Stars at Tarporley High School. Being trialled with a Year 9 tutor group, it is hoped the programme will help encourage students to read more in their own time and about topics which interest them. The scheme uses famous footballers to demonstrate the importance of literacy and the skills in this field.

Democracy comes to Tarporley Primary YOU’D think that MP Antoinette Sandbach would want a break from Parliament when she is in her local constituency. But on a visit to Tarporley CE Primary, the Conservative MP was invited to open the school’s own Parliament. She was given a tour of the school by the elected Party Leader pupils and the head teacher, Kerry Forrester. The school has moved from having a school Council to a new, democratic and engaging format of an elected school Parliament. Pupils put together manifestos and canvassed their fellow pupils for votes explaining what they would do for their house if elected. In addition to the monthly Parliamentary meetings the school has four committees that children of all ages are elected to sit on which look at pupils’ health, safety on line, Christian ethos and an eco committee. After her tour Ms Sandbach said: “Those elected will now know that they will have to deliver on their manifesto commitments something they and their committees are already working hard on with support of staff and pupils. £This is a really exciting pupil-led approach to running a school and engaging young people with the world around them, I’m looking

forward to hearing more.” Ms Forrester added: “I just love our new School Parliament system we have set up as it has come from the ideas of our children following last year’s elections. It’s wonderful to see all of our children experiencing a parliamentary system at a level they understand from the youngest children in the school (who are 4) to our oldest Yr6 pupils. Who knows we may even have the future Members of Parliaments in our midst.”

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

EARLY WINTER THE year end is approaching and it is time to enjoy the small splashes of colour in the garden. Frost is so pretty on the most ordinary of foliage so enjoy the frosting on the humble blackberry leaf (see photo) or the large flat dying heads of Sedum or Hydrangea. I know I have mentioned this before but one of my favourite shrubs Viburnum bodnantense Dawn, started flowering in October and is heavy with scent in milder periods throughout winter. Plant it near a regular thoroughfare so you can catch the honeyed scent daily. For colour the evergreens take the stage in winter. Some conifers have architectural shapes provided they are given space to grow naturally. Chamaecyparis pisifera Filifera Aurea is a bit of a mouthful of a name but it will grow as a broad pyramid shape with drooping golden foliage all year and can be clipped to keep it compact. Partner it with the rich deep green leaves and red berries of mounded Skimmia and some glaucous blue Euphorbia characias wulfenii. Other plants that may be in flower include Mahonia media, the varieties Charity or Winter

Sun are often seen for sale. This is a tall shrub with evergreen large spiky leaves and long stems covered with tiny yellow scented flowers. Mahonias are great for striking winter colour and if they get too tall, cut stems down in early spring and they will re-sprout new shoots for next winter. Jobs to do in the garden include pruning grapevines when the plant is fully dormant in winter. They produce sap when stems are cut and can have disease introduced to the cut when the plant is growing. Pruning in winter when the sap will not bleed prevents this from happening. Make sure plants in pots are protected from frost by making sure the pots are not waterlogged as they are more likely to freeze and crack in cold weather. Take a plastic bag larger than the pot, cut the bottom off to allow drainage and then stuff with straw to the top of the pot. Move lemon or orange trees in pots to greenhouse or cool conservatory and do the same for pelargoniums. Last year I kept mine dry in pots in the garage by a window and they came through to grow on this year.
