PRIVATE CARE AT HOME – THE ONLY ANSWER! Local Government Ombudsman Dr Jane Martin and chair of the Adult Social Care Complaints Commission, recently reported that there is a big rise in the number of complaints from people not receiving their care they need from the Local Authorities. The main issues were about the poor service provided and the lack of respect and dignity. There were many examples of carers not arriving at the appointed times and no continuity of carers, resulting in lack of engagement with the client. One lady said her carers do not even look at her! Dr Martin said: “It’s the little things that mean so much to them like maintaining their dignity, independence and promoting a good quality of life. Consistency of care is vital to those who rely on these services.” Providing care in the home is an incredibly important part of making sure that someone is able to retain their independence and stay in their own home. Inadequate home care can mean that older people lose the support they need for day-to-day tasks such as dressing or washing, and may be left to suffer in silence, often ending up in hospital.

Here we go again……… ‘Everybody Needs Somebody’! At Bunbury Care Agency all our daily calls are a minimum of 1 hour. Great emphasis is placed of the importance of companionship, encouragement and emotional support. No task is too much. Our carers are always happy to help with the housework, shopping, transport and go that extra mile when required. A couple that we currently look after, have poor mobility and sight. They have both been in and out of hospital after various falls. Now back at home they have made a remarkable improvement due to the efforts of their carers. They are now regaining their strength and are talking about being taken out for Sunday lunch soon, something they have not done for a long time. Our carers get a great feeling of satisfaction when they make a difference to someone else’s life, so everyone is a winner! Our live in carers tell the same story. If you would like to join our team in the New Year, either as a daily or live in carer, please contact us as soon as possible.

So three cheers and a big thank you to all our carers who continue to dedicate their time for the benefit of others. I wish them, and all our clients a very Happy Christmas and peaceful New Year

Utkinton & Cotebrook Parish Council Neighbourhood Development Plan – we need your help!

Utkinton and Cotebrook Parish has been approved by Cheshire West and Chester Council to go ahead with the creation of a Neighbourhood Development Plan and the process will be led by Parish Councillor Ian Priestner. A leaflet about why we are creating a Neighbourhood Plan will be produced and circulated to all households in the Parish early in the New Year and questionnaire asking for your views on what you want the Parish to look like in the future. We will publish more details on our website www.utkintonandcotebrook.com and on our Facebook page. We are calling for volunteers to join a Steering Group to pilot the Plan through to its final adoption. Please contact us through the website ‘Feedback and Comments’ page if you need any more information This will probably be our last entry this year and we want to thank you for reading and to ask you to keep the comments coming. The Parish Council is involved in many projects and discussions: • Trying to ensure that the parish doesn’t get over-developed – particularly with Northgate Field awaiting decision but keeping in mind the need for really affordable housing • Finding a safe way for pedestrians and cyclists to get to and from Tarporley – and that may include a footpath and cycleway as well as looking at speed restrictions on Utkinton Road • Exploring the possibilities of extending the current dial-a-ride services but will want to hear your opinions • Putting a flashing sign in Cotebrook to try and reduce the speed of traffic on the A49 – we already installed a flashing speed sign above the school on Quarry Bank • Challenging the designation of Utkinton as a ‘Local Service Centre’ in CWaC’s ‘Local Plan 2’ consultations • Along with the school, the PTA and CWaC we have looked at the possibility of putting playground equipment on the school playing field – there isn’t a decision yet but we will let everyone know exactly what the plans are once the Diocese makes up its mind. We are mindful of a few voices of objection and will take their views into account. • Continuing to look for opportunities to find places for recreation in the Parish. • Our website will have had almost 13,000 visitors by the end of 2016 – please keep on reading and if you, or your club/society have an event that you wish to publicise please get in touch. We are also looking at different ways to talk to ALL 700+ parishioners and 310 households • Looking for another Councillor – so please get in touch if you would like to contribute to the future of your Parish. The Parish Council meets every 2nd Tuesday in either Cotebrook or Utkinton Village Hall - we would welcome seeing more of you there.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Tarporley, Tattenhall, Kelsall, Tarvin &

Bunbury areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends

and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Busy times for Tarvin Tennis Club

O T w t l

C d M l O

Under blue skies and the watchful eye of the nearly completed new pavilion, after three months of preliminary rounds being played, Tarvin Tennis held their finals day club competition. Is Peter Nosworthy Tarvin’s equivalent of Andy Murray? Peter duly retained his singles title, his 16th, having lost only twice in the last 18 years. Wendy Rae was also on the winning trail again, picking up her 8th singles title. The final set in both cases was 7-6, showing close encounters, but the losing singles players, Graham Bunting and Sarah Mitchell, had some consolation when they together won the mixed competition in three sets, defeating Luke Jennings and Rhiann Perry. Peter also had success in the Men’s Doubles, when with partner Rob Millar he beat Amit Tauro and Barry Hanson in three hard-fought sets. In the Ladies Doubles it was a happy outcome for previous winners Catherine Mason and Jane Wilson, who defeated Jo Houlbrook and Rowena Okell, appearing in their first finals match. A week later and the club held their final American Tournament of the year, again blessed with sunny skies. Twelve players took part and the overall winners were Felicity Pochin and Chris Lowe with runners-up Catherine Mason and Rupert Thorp. Club evenings and daytime groups continued throughout the summer months, teams completed their Summer League programme, the Winter Leagues beckon, 2 of the courts had a thorough but expensive clean, the new pavilion and lights project near completion…… Busy but rewarding times indeed.” 28 To advertise call 01244 350398

Tattenhall Country Market to close after 38 years TATTENHALL Country Market will close in December owing to a lack of volunteers. Organisers have reluctantly taken the decision to end on a high with a special Christmas market on Saturday 3rd December and the final ever event on 16th December. One of the organisers Marion Bevan said: “We are sad that our 38 year association with the village, and our customers, has come to an end, but feel it is better to stop now than allow the market to dwindle away over the next few months. “We all, producers past and present, wish to thank all our customers for their loyal support over the years. But there is still the Christmas Market to look forward to, so let’s make it the best ever and go out on a high!” The special Christmas market will be on Saturday 3rd December, at the Barbour Institute from 2pm-4pm. All the usual home-made items will be on sale as well as Christmas cakes, puddings and of course lots of mince pies. There is an interesting range of handicrafts, plants and wreaths etc, all making ideal Christmas presents. There will be no market on Friday 2nd, but the market will be open as usual on the following two Fridays i.e. the 9th and 16th of Dec. The last market will be on Friday 26th December from 9.30-11am at the Barbour Institute.

New president of Cotebrook Village Hall Bill Holroyd has agreed to be the new president of Cotebrook Village Hall. In recent years, he has provided support to the hall and pre-school, always maintaining a keen interest in developments. The committee is optimistic that his presidency will significantly raise the profile of the hall as it goes from strength to strength. Bill said: “I am extremely honoured to be able to help this grass roots facility within our community. It is a great example of how communities can get together and provide invaluable local services in these times of austerity. “It is the very essence of Britishness and I have every hope that it will continue to thrive and expand its reach.”

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Quick tips for the party season By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing

Q. I don’t have much time to get ready for Christmas parties, so can you give me a few ‘quick’ make-up prep tips please to get me from work to party? A. If you are struggling for time then you can renew your daytime makeup by blotting your face with a tissue, or oil blotting papers to remove any excess oil. We love Art Deco oil blotting papers! Apply liquid concealer where you need it, blend with fingertips and dust over with a fresh application of powder to set. Concentrate your efforts on applying eyeliner pencil and smudge to give a smokey eye effect. Freshen up lips with a coloured lip gloss. If you have a little more time then follow our simple steps opposite to really give your skin that party glow before applying fresh makeup! Q. I’m 43 and have never been to a beauty salon! I wouldn’t know which treatments to choose, which treatments would you suggest? A. There is such an array of different treatments now that it’s sometimes hard to make sense of a treatment menu and to make a choice. However, rather than looking at individual treatments think of something about yourself that you would like to enhance or improve. Perhaps you’ve always wanted smoother skin? Better shaped eyebrows? Less hairy legs? Less thread veins on your cheeks? Once you have your ‘mission’, contact the salon and ask for a consultation. The qualified Therapist can then take you through the treatments available and create a plan to help you achieve your goal. For more information about treatment planning visit the blog page at www.sensoriabeauty.co.uk

Hospital launches new fund raising campaign TARPORLEY War Memorial Hospital have launched their campaign, to raise the much needed funds to continue providing its service to Tarporley and the surrounding communities. The launch took place at the home of Phil and Alexis Redmond, who kindly hosted the event on behalf of the hospital. “The hospital turns 100 in 2019, so we have launched of campaign to ensure that the hospital is still here in another 100 years” explains Karin Daelamans, Hospital Director, Tarporley War Memorial Hospital. The hospital first opened its doors in 1919, as a lasting memory to those who died in service during the First World War. Tarporley War Memorial Hospital offered medical services that were to free of charge to the residents of Tarporley and its “townships”, a concept relatively unheard of before the introduction of a National Health Service. It was the residents’ responsibility to contribute what they could each year to fund the hospital service. Karin added: “We have really come a full circle, as we once again are looking to our local community to support us, as they did nearly 100 years ago” The evening saw Phil and Alexis Redmond, pledge their support for the hospitals campaign, followed by inspiring speeches from hospital matron, Claire Teasdale, and from the new hospital director. It costs £2,400 each day to keep the hospital open and to continue providing its care to the community so it is hoped that the campaign, whose strapline is ‘Our future is in YOUR hands’ will help to ease financial worries. For more information about the hospital, and how to donate, then please contact fundraising@ tarporleyhospital. co.uk l Brookside and Hollyoaks writer Phil Redmond, and his wife, Alexis Redmond at the campaign launch.

TARPORLEY HIGH SCHOOL & SIXTH FO

Move over Movember – it’s time for Povember! MALE staff at Tarporley High School are attempting to grow moustaches as part of a Povember campaign. For many years now men have been growing their facial hair for Movember to raise awareness of male cancers. This time, the Tarporley staff have put their own spin on the event by growing moustaches to raise money in memory of former student Richard Pover who sadly died aged just 21. Richard battled cancer for 19 months before finally succumbing to the disease in 2013. Since that time, his family have set up a permanent annual scholarship in his name at the University of Sheffield where Richard was a student.

Sixth formers’ year of giving

After a busy year of fundraising, the Sixth Form Council made donations in September to a number of different charities, namely, Chester Aid to the Homeless, Tarporley War Memorial Hospital, LIVE! Chester, St Luke’s Hospice, Mind, Calm and also the Alzheimer’s Society, in recognition of the Sixth Formers being Dementia Friends. Congratulations must go to outgoing council chairman William Ains-worth and his committee, for their dedication and hard work in raising over £1,300. New chairwoman Megan Latham is already planning this year’s fundraising activities, the first of which will be a Festive ‘Over 60s’ Coffee Morning for members of the community. The coffee morning will be held in the Sixth Form common room, and council members are looking forward to serving refreshments and being joined by fellow Sixth Formers for bingo, music and a quiz! If you would like further information about this event, please contact Mrs Everton in Sixth Form or email TEverton@tarporleyhigh.co.uk

FORM COLLEGE Art students produce so Menai good pieces A Level Art students took part in the annual Art residential at the Conwy Centre, Anglesey. Year 12 pupils spent the weekend working alongside other talented pupils from across the county with practising artists. Pupils were divided into three groups with focussing on drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking. Accompanied by Mr Bowland and Miss Jones pupils explored a range of materials and processes that really stretched their artistic talents, from wooden sculpture to oil based mono printing. Mr Bowland said of the experience, ‘There is no greater pleasure than seeing pupils immersed in the Art world, engaged with every fibre of their being and producing work of an exceptional calibre. I could not be prouder of what our eleven artists produced this weekend and they conducted themselves with confidence and maturity.’ Of her first visit to the Art residential weekend Miss Jones added, ‘It’s a wonderful opportunity for students to see their teachers as practitioners and as teachers it really enhances our subject knowledge.’ Further photographs of pupils work can be found on the Instagram feed under the username @ tarporleyarts

Drawing at Delamere This term saw the new GCSE and A Level artists embrace the natural environment and in line with the national Big Draw event explore a range of approaches to drawing inspired by the work of contemporary landscape artists. Accompanied by Miss Jones, Mr Bowland and Mr Clayton from Kelsall primary, pupils spent the day at Delamere forest responding to both the rolling hills, dappled sunlit trees and delicate crisp autumn leaves. Pupils will use their initial studies to inspire a range of creative outcomes back in the art studios. Further photographs of pupils work can be found on the Instagram feed under the username @tarporleyarts

Fun, flames and fireworks Tarporley’s annual Bonfire and Fireworks Night was a great success again this year. The hundreds who attended were treated to a huge bonfire, a great firework display, as well as mulled wine, beer and hot dogs in the refreshment tent. One attendee, Simone Quin-Dixon, commented “Awesome night! Thought the fireworks were going to go on forever.” 1st Tarporley Scouts would like to thank everyone who came along, as well as all the volunteers who helped before, during and afterwards. A spe-cial thanks to all those who loaned equipment and of course to Mr and Mrs Newport the use of their field.

ELAN GUARANTEES TO HELP TARPORLEY HOME BUYERS ENJOYING a prime location and a high specification, plus with the offer of an equity loan towards the cost, new homes in Tarporley have the edge over older equivalents. Factor in the ease of living and energy efficient measures and it’s no surprise that people are warming to the idea of moving to a brand new home like those at The Birches. The good news for those who are considering moving to one of the four and five-bedroom properties is that Elan Homes is continuing to offer the Government-backed equity loan scheme. It’s available on homes priced under £600,000 and both first time buyers and those making their next move on the housing ladder are eligible for the valuable assistance. Marie Morris, sales director for Elan Homes in the North, explains: “Over the last three years more than 185,000 people nationwide have used Help to Buy equity loans to reduce the initial cost of owning a brand new home, but there’s still some confusion about the scheme. “Unlike the mortgage guarantee offered under the same banner, the equity loan isn’t ending at the end of Four-bedroom Hardy style homes can be the year – there’s still time for buyers purchased with a Help to Buy equity loan. to take out an equity loan towards the cost of a brand new home at The Birches. The great thing about the initiative is that it’s not just for those buying their first home, but can be used by other purchasers too such as those who don’t have a lot of equity in the home they want to move from.” Current prices at The Birches start from £374,995 for a four-bedroom Hardy style home. By taking out an equity loan for £74,999 or 20% of the price, the initial cost reduces to £299,996. The lower price includes a deposit of £18,750 (5%), plus mortgage of £281,246 (75%). Crucially, the equity loan is interest free for five years. It’s not just the offer of Help to Buy equity loans that sets the homes at The Birches apart: “When people are considering their finances as they look for a new home there can be hidden extra costs that they may not have budgeted for,” Marie adds. “For example, if they opt for an older property they may find that they need to spend time and money on home improvements, perhaps replacing the boiler to a more energy efficient one. In contrast our new homes enjoy a high specification including energy efficient heating systems that should mean they’re more economical to run than a similar-sized pre-owned equivalent. “Stamp duty is also something that’s often overlooked, but we may be able to help cover that cost.” Situated on the edge of the thriving Cheshire village of Tarporley, The Birches couldn’t be better placed for excellent schools, traditional shopping, fine dining and more. Tarporley offers a traditional rural way of life, with all the style and sophistication you’d expect of a charming Cheshire village, while remaining within easy reach of the cities of Liverpool and Manchester. The sales office and show home at The Birches are open Thursday to Monday from 10am to 5pm. GARDENING BY JANET HEATH As Christmas approaches and the year draws to a close it is time to enjoy the evergreens in the garden. I always suggest that you concentrate a collection of plants with winter interest, either somewhere that you can see as you arrive at your home or in a view that you see on a daily basis from a window. Chameacyparis pisifera Filifera Aurea is a golden foliage conifer with long thread like leaves and a lovely rounded shape. Allow it space in an open situation and trim the shrub annually to keep it small. Plant it near a Chamaecyparis lawsoniana Bleu Nantais which has grey blue foliage and a neat upright habit. Another evergreen that looks colourful in winter is Elaeagnus ebbingei Gilt Edge. It has yellow and green leaves and the bonus of fragrant tiny flowers in autumn.

These three shrubs would form a good background to lower growing plants such as evergreen Euphorbias, large or small. I have included a photo of a simple, yet effective evergreen planting, combining five plants which look good all year and require minimum maintenance. This combination can be used on a smaller scale. The plumes of the pampas grass at the back are probably the smaller variety, Cortaderia selloana Pumila which will get to about 1.5m tall. In front is the chocolate brown foliage of Pittosporum tenuifolium Tom Thumb, a low mounded shrub. Also adding contrast with golden yellow is Euonymus Emerald n Gold. Some lavenders and a mounded green Skimmia complete the design. Do not forget that some plants, if left unpruned have striking

shapes in winter especially frosted. Sedums, Hydrangea flowers, Achillea and Crocosmia seed heads (pictured) all add to the restrained winter palette of colour and shape. Complete the cutting back of dead foliage from perennials and remove wet leaves from sitting on top of plants and causing them to rot. Mulch around all plants with 4cms depth of well rotted organic matter to improve the soil for next year. Lightly water any plants in greenhouses but do not let them stand in water for any length of time as they may freeze in low temperatures. Plants in pots outside should not stand in water over winter and those more tender plants that could suffer if the roots are frozen should have the pots wrapped in bubble wrap to protect them.

What’s on in your village DECEMBER Peckforton and Beeston WI November is AGM time which seems to have come around very quickly. We had an excellent supper provided by Alison’s Kitchen in Tattenhall followed by a short business meeting and then our AGM, at which the present committee was re-elected for another year with Ann Wall as President. Celia Kinnersley then gave us a brief insight into Dowsing which turned out to be extremely entertaining and informative (and actually caused a lot of hilarity when we were all given the chance to ‘have a go’). Celia explained that dowsing has been in existence since the 5th century BC and is used in a great number of situations including, amongst others, finding drains, minerals and water – especially in Africa where it is used to pinpoint water reserves to sink wells. At our meeting in December we will be hearing about the history of Roberts’ Bakery, and our first hall meeting of the New Year will be on 1st February when Frank Forrest will tell us all about the first Plant Hunters – both of these talks sound very interesting and may be good meetings to attend if you are considering a visit to our WI where you would be most welcome. Our New Year’s Lunch will be on 18th January. Happy Christmas to everyone Tattenhall Gardening Society The December and January meetings of TGS take on an international flavour, with both event transporting us around the world and away from the winter chill. Firstly, on Wednesday 14th December, Jannie Hollins will talk on ‘Flowers of the World’. She has been involved in a 20 year+ project to develop the extensive gardens at Tattenhall Hall, using her extensive global travels to source unusual plant varieties for the garden. Many readers may have visited the Hall, open each year under the NGS scheme. Here, she will share the practical challenges of growing her collection in Cheshire, along with tips and ideas for us to perhaps try out. Tarporley WI Our final meeting of the year is on Wednesday 7th December, in the Done Room behind St. Helen’s Parish Church. Gaynor Jones from the Flower Room in Tarporley will demonstrate a festive floral arrangement. This is always very popular, and will be raffled so please bring a little money if you would like to enter. This will be followed by Prosecco tasting, accompanied by a delicious traditional cheeseboard. Please bring a bottle of something to share! Which Prosecco will be voted our favourite? Next year’s programme will be available; we have lots of exciting speakers and events to look forward to. It’s also time to renew membership; subs are £39 for the whole year. Doors open at 7:30; please come along if you can make it by 8pm! Bring a friend - your first meeting is free. Bring a torch as it is dark!
