Neve Maddock, Nicole Morrison, Olivia Allan and Katy Adkins represented Tarporley High in the Chester Gymnastics Competition in December. This was the first time Tarporley has been represented and the first time these girls have ever competed in Gymnastics. Although they didn’t win a podium position, they did themselves and the school very proud. Musical events at Tarporley High School On Tuesday 3rd February there will be an opportunity to see Year 11 and Year 13 students perform in the Recital concert, which will feature students performing pieces of music that they will be performing as part of their GCSE and A level course. Tickets for this event are free. Finally, on Saturday 14th February a number of students will be performing at the Royal Northern College of Music, in a musical event in association with Neston High School, Bishop Heber High and Christleton High school. Tickets for this event are available from the RNCM box office. 6 To advertise call 01244 350398

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Tarporley, Tattenhall, Kelsall, Tarvin &
Bunbury areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER Update on Tarporley’s Neighbourhood Plan The Draft Neighbourhood Plan is now complete and at the January Parish Council meeting, it was agreed that the Draft Plan should go forward to the next stage – its 6 week Formal Consultation. During this stage official bodies such as Chester West and Chester Council, English Heritage and The Environment Agency, as well as the general public are consulted. Details of how you can get involved will to be posted on our village notice boards and on www.tarporleyplan.org.uk. The Draft Plan is also available on this web site. Members of the Parish Council would like to thank all the volunteers who have spent many hours and much hard work in completing this Draft Plan on behalf of the village.
Tarporley Sports and Recreation
The Parish Council are about to take ownership of the 5 acres of outdoor sports and recreation land on Brook Road and have appointed Groundwork Cheshire to provide professional assistance. The management committee of the Community Centre are also keen to develop facilities on their land. Indications of the facilities the village might wish to see were collected during production of the Draft Neighbourhood Plan and during a survey on the future of Brook Road commissioned by CWAC. Groundwork will use this as a starting point to set the ball rolling and produce representative plans for both sites. They will then start a full consultation process by leafleting the village, gathering feedback and holding information gathering sessions probably at the community centre. This is exciting news for the village and will be your opportunity to shape the outdoor sports and recreation facilities which the village currently lacks. So please take part in the forthcoming consultation process.
Parking in Tarporley Concerns about the parking in Park Road, causing an obstruction to ambulances getting past the Hospital and the Health Centre, have been raised once again with the Parish Council. The Parish Council are considering paying for additional double yellow lines to be painted along Park Road to emphasise where parking is not permitted because it causes an obstruction. The Police have also reported the recent booking of people parking on, and between, the white zig zag lines of the pedestrian crossing on High Street. Parking on these lines, and between them, is a criminal offence. When parking at the Community Centre, please make sure you park within a marked bay. If you park in an unmarked area, you are liable to get booked and fined by the Council’s parking wardens. Affordable Homes off Brook Road Ten of the affordable homes will be ready for occupation on 15th February. It is great news that already 7 applications from local people for the “shared ownership” ones are underway via Swetenhams Estate Agents. More details about them and the ones for rent are available from Swetenhams on High Street.

Parish Council Meetings
The Parish Council meets in the Committee Room of the Community Centre at 7 pm on the second Monday of each month, with the exception of August. Meetings are open to the public, and start with an Open Forum session, during which members of the public can address the whole Council on matters of concern to them. Also the Parish Council holds a surgery at 6.30 pm prior to each Parish Council meeting when members of the public are welcome to discuss matters with councillors on an informal basis.
New Councillors Needed In addition to a general election, May will see the end of the current term of office for parish councillors. For a variety of personal reasons, several of the longer serving members of Tarporley Parish Council will be stepping down on this occasion. The Council is well known as a vibrant and pro-active Quality Council and is looking for enthusiastic members of the community to replace the retiring councillors. The main requirement is a concern for the continued wellbeing of the village and its residents and
a willingness to work to achieve the best for our community. Full Council meetings are held on the second Monday of each month except August and informal meetings of special interest groups occur as required. These groups cover infrastructure and street scene issues, management of the cemetery etc.. We are also represented on local charitable trusts, school governing bodies and the Community Centre Management Committee. If you are interested in joining the council, please speak to one of the existing councillors or contact the parish clerk (details above).

Look up....
and use all the space in your home
We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of
NEW
the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about
Here’s a great way to make more storage space...
£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. Ageing is our biggest challenge A
geing is the biggest challenge as we progress further into the 21st century. It’s a challenge that contains within it a threat; that if we don’t take action quickly enough, in the right kind of way, then what is unquestionably humanity’s greatest success – doubling life expectancy in the last 200 years – could become a real problem. Last month BBC Breakfast had a week long series on living longer. They covered a wide range of topics but some startling statistics were raised: l There are over 20 million people aged 50 years and over, over a third of the total UK population. l There are now over 14 million people in the UK aged 60 and above. l For the first time in history, there are 11 million people aged 65 or over in the UK. l 3 million people are aged 80 or over. l In 2010, approximately 40,000 people in the UK turned 65; in 2012, it the figure was about 800,000. l There are now more people in the UK aged 60 and above than there are under 18 and more pensioners than children under 16. l The number of centenarians living in the UK has risen by 73% over the last decade to 13,350 in 2012.
There are many elderly and lonely people who are quite able to look after themselves, but whose quality of life could be improved with the help of a companion or housekeeper. With so much talk about the loneliness of older people, it can be a huge relief to know that your loved one is not left on their own, especially if you live a distance away. If you wish to remain as independent as you can a companion housekeeper is an ideal solution. If you would like to discuss the many options available, please contact us to make an appointment.

Pieces fit together for medical company A Tarporley medical company has experienced extraordinary growth in the space of a year. Jigsaw Medical supplies paramedics, nurses and doctors to organisations and events all over the country. It has also branched out to provide training and recruitment solutions for the NHS and

private clients, so much so that the company has tripled in size during 2014. Among the highlights of 2014 was the Virgin STRIVE challenge – providing a medical team for 10 people who ran, rowed, cycled, hiked and climbed from the O2 arena in London to the peak of the Matterhorn in Switzerland. The company also provided first aid at the Tour de France Grand Départ in Yorkshire in July with 227 paramedics, nurses and doctors throughout the two days. 2014 also saw the expansion of the Jigsaw Medical brand to Sydney, Australia to become the only UK based agency to deal with paramedics internationally, on such a large scale. The aim is to use this opportunity to drive recruitment in and out of the UK, with offshore and onshore opportunities already available to UK based candidates and global candidates. Managing Director Chris Percival said: “It is teamwork and the amazing people we have on-board that has got us here. “We’re not resting on our laurels however, and plans are in motion for further growth in the future.”

Happy New Year from Birch Heath Veterinary Clinic Has your pet been spoiled during the Christmas break?
Many pets (and some owners…) will have gained weight over the holiday period, and would benefit from losing a few pounds. We have top tips, a helpful weight management program, and 25% off all obesity and satiety diets purchased during January, February and March Being overweight increases the risk of diabetes, heart conditions, joint disease, skin disorders, and some types of cancer. Many pet owners unknowingly over feed their pets and it is important to emphasise that weight loss can have a miraculous impact on both quality of life and longevity.
Top tips for successful weight loss:-
l Measuring cups are not reliable, (they can be up to 20% inaccurate) Pet food should be weighed on small kitchen scales to ensure the correct amount is fed each day l Treats like dental sticks and human foods can be surprisingly calorific. A few biscuits from the daily rations should be used as treats. l Increase exercise – make it a challenge! Ball launchers for dogs and moving toys/chaser lasers for cats can promote a more active lifestyle. l Make an appointment at our free nurse clinic for a weight assessment It’s never too late to start a weight loss diet! Well done to Misty arden for winning the national Royal Canin Weight Loss Competition 2014!
60% of dogs & 40% of cats are OBESE!

health & beauty with Angela Bartlett
Q. What can I do about the dark circles under my eyes? A. This is a question that we are frequently asked. The skin around the eye area is very delicate and can quickly become affected by internal and external factors. Dark circles can be inherited, but if they have just started to appear look at factors that may have contributed to them such as lack of sleep and allergies. In Chinese medicine the area under the eye is associated with the kidneys, so if you have puffiness as well as dark circles consider reducing the sodium content in your diet and increase your water consumption. Applying cold compresses or cold cucumber slices for around fifteen minutes can help with dark circles. We also recommend a light concealer for the area and Total Eye Care which has small light reflective particles to help improve the appearance of the skin.
Q. My skin feels slightly rough for a few days after my skin needling (dermal rolling). Is this normal? A. The process of dermal rolling or skin needling involves microscopic pin prick wounds to the skin to encourage collagen production to produce a more youthful skin tone. The slight roughness you are experience is a ‘micro crusting’ and is a normal part of skin healing. You need to treat the skin very gently during this period until the skin has returned to normal. This includes avoiding any exfoliation products in the treated area and the application of an unscented, soothing balm such as Barrier Repair.

Gardening by Janet Heath
The promise of spring Late winter can often bring a blast of cold weather but it does not stop plants from starting to grow and flower. Bulbs start the year with crocuses and snowdrops out first. Crocuses do best in sun as the flowers will open wide in the sun, then close as the sun leaves them. Crocus tommasinianus has pale mauve flowers with golden stamens in the middle and the birds do not damage the blooms. Birds seem to like the larger flowers especially yellow ones, so I now avoid growing these! A shady site with well drained soil under deciduous trees suits the snowdrops better. They will gradually carpet the ground under trees and shrubs. I would
50
also add Iris reticulata to my early flowering bulbs. These small but exotic blue, white or creamy coloured flowers will enjoy a sunny or lightly shaded spot in any well drained soil. Plant all these bulbs in groups close together for best effect. An early flowering climber is Clematis cirrhosa Wisley Cream. This is an evergreen climber that will do well in a sheltered sunny position and give you white, slightly scented flowers in late winter. Ensure the roots are kept cool with the growth in the sun. Prune to shape after flowering but this variety only needs pruning if it becomes too large and to remove dead stems. Witch hazel or Hamamelis is another early flowering shrub although be warned, the flowers are small so don’t expect a
showy plant. However they do look good in light woodland with tiny spidery yellow, red or orange flowers, often slightly scented. In autumn the leaves turn red or yellow. Underplant with snowdrops and crocuses and plant next to a Cornus alba sibirica with red stems for a colourful display in February. Mulch those perennials whose buds are just below the surface of the soil with a layer of well rotted manure. Paeonies have big fat buds at soil level, rodgersias and heleniums sit just below the surface and all would have new shoots protected from freezing by a cosy layer of mulch. Also mulch fruit trees and shrubs with a layer of manure and complete pruning of apples and pears before buds start to grow.

Olivia’s English is an example to all Olivia Taylor, a Year 11 student at Tarporley, has had a piece of her writing especially selected by Cambridge University Press to use in an A Level Text Book. The piece, on stereotypically negative responses to the language used by teenagers, will be used as an example of excellence. The Editor of the new text book selected this piece of work and said the following: “Olivia is very talented. Her piece reminded me of Jenni Herd’s letter to the
Times. She will receive a credit next to the piece in print and also a free copy of the book for her own reference. Carry on the good work Olivia and good luck with your writing career.” Olivia wishes to study English further at A Level and eventually wants to become an English teacher. To have a piece of writing produced in Year 10 which is then used as an A Level style model is remarkable; to liken her style to that of a broadsheet journalist is a true achievement!

FOOTBALL TALK...
TARPORLEY VICS FC
Cup success makes up for poor league form Tarporley Vic’s First Team were held to a 1-1 draw by Cuddington FC at the start of last month. This result was followed up with a 3-2 win over Middlewich Town FC and then a 4-1 win over Irlam FC Reserves. These results mean that Tarporley Vics First Team are still in contention to qualify from their group in the J A Walton Challenge Cup. In the only League game to be played over the last month Tarporley Vic’s First Team lost 2-1 to Grappenhall FC. They now sit on the Bottom of the Cheshire League 1st Division albeit with games in hand. Tarporley Vics Reserves continue to have mixed results mainly in Cup matches. They too also lost their only League game played in the last month being beaten 2-1 by Barnton Wanderers. Tarporley Vics were also invited into the Commander Ethleston Charity Cup and they reached the Semi Final where they were beaten by Whitchurch Alport. This annual competition dates back
to 1908 and was created in memory of Commander Alfred Peel Ethelston, who died in a naval battle during the Second Boer War in South Africa in 1899. After his death, the Royal Navy installed memorials of honour in his name at Portsmouth, Chatham, Plymouth and Dartmouth. From this desire to remember the Commander in his home town of Whitchurch, the Charity Cup Competition was born. The winners of the Competition are presented with the original silver plated trophy, which bears the Ethelston family crest and details of the naval battle in which Commander Ethelston lost his life. With a diameter of 500mm and a total cup and base height of 540mm, the trophy is larger than the original FA Cup. Please contact Mike, Andy, Sean, Clive, Adam or Matt or any other Tarporley Vics members for any other Tarporley Vics info. Inheritance Tax could still threaten your f You may remember the Conservatives were planning to increase the Inheritance Tax (IHT) threshold to £1m if they won the General Election.
S
ubsequently, the new Coalition Government shelved it. But if you are thinking that you are unlikely to be affected by IHT, think again. More and more people are affected by IHT every year. It used to be a tax that was the preserve of the very wealthy, but escalating property values in the last ten years have put paid to that. For single people, Inheritance Tax applies at the top rate of 40% to assets worth over £325,000. This threshold is known as the nil band rate. For married couples and civil partnerships the threshold is £650,000. But the higher £650,000 limit only applies when assets are passed between spouses and civil partners and this figure reduces if any money is passed onto any of your benefactors during your lifetime. There are also other financial implications to consider, particularly if you are a widow, widower or divorcee. And with the threshold remaining unchanged by the coalition government
until at least 2015 and subject to further legislation the freeze will be extended up to and including the 2017/2018 tax year, more people could get sucked in as the minimum IHT threshold usually increases at a rate equivalent to at least inflation. Pearson Financial Management, a local Senior Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management, is concerned that most people do not understand the implications of IHT. “It’s clear that people are confused by IHT policy and many mistakenly believe they are unlikely to be affected by it,” he said. And he is also concerned about a potentially more serious knock-on effect. “A Will* is vital in helping mitigate IHT,” said Philip. “Without a proper Will, people run the risk of their estate being severely reduced through IHT and also leaving themselves exposed to the ravages of long term care
costs later in life. It’s now more important than ever to seek professional advice and establish how you can protect your hard earned assets.” If you are uncertain about how you stand regarding IHT and would like to know more about how to prevent much of your money falling into the hands of Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs, or your Local Authority through Long Term Care fees, book your consultation today. For further information or to request your complimentary guide to Inheritance Tax please contact Pearson Financial Management of St. James’s Place Wealth Management. Pearson Financial Management can be contacted by phone on 01829 732450 or by email on ann.pearson@sjpp.co.uk. Pearson Financial Management, with over 20 years experience, is a family business based in Cheshire

He provides honest and trustworthy advice without any sales pressure. He listens carefully, understands my requirements and has provided an excellent balance of investments. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone.” Mrs J. Hallett
“I spoke to a couple of financial advisors when I retired and they focussed on the money. When I met Phil it was a nice surprise as he focussed on me. His philosophy was different in that he was genuinely interested in improving my quality of life. Phil explained everything to me in a simple easy to understand language. I took the decision to invest with him and have never regretted it. He is always easy to contact and happy to help.” Retired Superintendent, David Wilkinson

Big sporting success
Two small rural primary schools, Utkinton and Huxley, have achieved outstanding sporting success. Both schools are partnered, with children sharing high-quality teaching, across a range of sports, which then feed in to intra-school competitions at Tarporley High School.
During the last term, the schools have entered seven competitions, finishing either winners or runners-up at each. This has been a great achievement, as at many of the competitions the schools have been competing against much larger local primaries.
s for small schools
All the medallists from across both schools Senior teacher at Utkinton, Gareth Coyne said: “Our curriculum is built around a wide-variety of sports, which feed into the competition calendar. “All children have opportunity to be selected to represent the school and take great pride in doing so. 68% of the children in our school took part in at least one
competition during the Autumn Term alone! “As two small schools, competing against much larger schools is a real challenge. However, through the children’s hard work, and careful planning from teachers, we have been able to achieve some amazing results.”
Beth wants to build a school! TARPORLEY student Beth George is raising money to build a school in Madagascar after spending the summer doing conservation work on the island. The 20-year-old geography student at University of Nottinghamhas already helped to raise £5,983 towards the reconstruction of a dilapidated school in the remote village of Tsagnoria but the charity needs to reach £11,000. To find out more about Beth’s trip visit www.globalgiving.co.uk/projects/tsagnoriaschool-building-project .
