LAUNCHING OUR ‘CHARITY OF THE MONTH’
Pension Credit - This is an income related benefit to give you some extra money in retirement. If you’re on a low income or struggling to make ends meet, claiming Pension Credit could help. It comes in two parts and you may be eligible for one or both parts • Guarantee Credit which can top up your weekly income to £159.35 if you’re single or £243.25 if you’re a couple. • Savings Credit if you have some savings or your income is higher than the basic State Pension. You could be entitled to £13.20 extra per week if you are single or £14.90 if you’re a couple.
As mentioned last month, as part of our 50th anniversary celebration we are going to support a charity each month. Some will be national charities and others local charities in Cheshire and Anglesey. We are starting with the Alzheimer’s Society for February. For every 100 ‘Likes’ on our Facebook page, we will donate £100 to that charity. We hope you will help us raise money for good causes.
Some financial tips - Are you claiming all the money you’re entitled to? Age UK estimates as much as £3.5 billion in money benefits remains unclaimed by older people every year. Attendance Allowance - If you have an illness or disability and you have to pay for extra help at home, you could receive £55.65 a week if you need help in the day or the night and £83.10 a week if you pay for someone to live with you. Carer’s Allowance - The main welfare benefit to help carers and you don’t have to be related to or live with the person you care for to claim the current amount of £62.70 per week.
Please contact us on 01829 260280

TARPORLEY HIGH SCHOOL & SIXT Bugsy Malone comes to the Tarporley stage Tarporley High School is putting on a production of Bugsy Malone, the musical is based on the 1976 Alan Parker film of the same name. Parker’s movie is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the gangster films of the 1920s. Parker had the idea for a gangster film that starred an all-child cast in 1973. Following the film’s success, Parker was deluged with requests to develop a stage version. Which he did and Tarporley High School is giving everyone the chance to see it from 24th-26th January. Contact the school for details if you would like tickets.
Students collect for foodbank Students, staff, parents and carers at Tarporley High School took time out to think of those less fortunate than themselves and ran a foodbank collection. A total of 56 boxes (estimated 1300 items) were delivered to Cheshire Foodbank in Chester before Christmas, where they were gratefully received.

Amy’s account of Manchester terror attack published in national magazine Amy Walker, a Year 13 student at Tarporley Sixth Form, recently had an article published in Grazia magazine, published. To have her words and voice heard in a national weekly glossy magazine is a superb achievement! Amy had attended the Ariana Grande concert in May of last year and experienced the horrific attack on Manchester Arena, first-hand. Her original article was written for the Sixth Form’s Award-winning magazine, ‘Term.’ It was a beautifully written and heartfelt piece - actually moving one reader to tears - and was picked up by Grazia through a contact who works at their Head Offices in London. The magazine was interested in hearing a survivor’s account and wanted to broadcast Amy’s message that terror won’t beat us: “I do believe I will recover. The thing I try to focus on now is the love and humanity that came out of that night. People ran towards the hell. They helped each other.” Amy’s concluding words are lessons to us all: If I stop living my life and doing things that I want to do because I’m scared, that will mean they got what they wanted. I won’t do that anymore and I won’t be afraid.” Well done Amy – brave words and a fantastic journalistic achievement.

HEALTH & BEAUTY By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing
3 Top Beauty Tips
that you need to take into 2018 with you‌ By Angela Bartlett, Owner Sensoria Beauty 1. Always double cleanse your skin, especially at night. If you are spending time on applying makeup then you should spend the same amount of time removing it. If you skin is not thoroughly cleansed then your following serums or moisturisers cannot do their job properly. Also, these days with the trend for long-wear makeup you can no longer rely on one application of a regular cleanser to clean your skin effectively. 2. Choose pollution-fighting ingredients in your skin care. If you are unsure how much pollution is in your area visit www.skinpollution.com to get up-todate information on pollution levels. Pollution takes a serious toll on your skin, leading to a wide range of skin problems including premature ageing. Choose products with antioxidant ingredients such as vitamins A, C and D and active charcoal to absorb pollutants. 3. Use a face oil below your makeup During the winter months your skin can take on a dullness which an application of highlighter can help to disguise. However, using a face oil beneath your makeup will be far more effective to not only make your skin look better but treat it too. It will help your foundation to blend evenly, keep moisture levels consistent and give a healthy glow. Choir on song with winter concerts Bunbury Singers recently held a successful series of concerts and events. The choir performed two concerts over the Christmas period at Bunbury and Tarvin churches, with guests from The Crewe Male Voice Choir and Tarporley Silver Band at Bunbury; and Cantoris, Frodsham Chorus and Tarvin Church Choir at Tarvin. They also went carol singing at four Tarporley pubs and the Lockgate Café at Beeston. There was enormous support for all these events from the local communities. The total amount raised from the concerts was a fantastic £1,100, which was donated to St Luke’s Hospice, and the carol singing raised £250 for the Guide Dogs for the Blind. The group rehearse on Monday nights during term time at Bunbury Primary School, 7.15-9pm and are always looking for new members. If you would like to come along or want to find out more, call Sarah-Jane Stockman on 01829 260714 or visit www.bunburysingers.co.uk

National Trust Volunteers seeks new members Chester National Trust Volunteers (CNTV) is looking for new members. The group carries out land management tasks within a radius of 30 miles of Chester. Tasks include hedge laying, dry stone walling, path maintenance, planting trees, building tree guards, fencing, and many other tasks that NT Rangers ask us to carry out. CNTV was formed over 25 years ago, a group of around 50 friendly people of varying ages, (18 - 70+), who enjoy friendship, working together and good fresh air. We work across Cheshire, the Marches (Chirk and Erddig) and the Wirral. You can choose to work on a Sunday, Tuesday or Thursday. Arrive at the site at 10am (it may be possible to share transport but your own car is an advantage) and work until 4pm (with regular breaks – mid morning, lunch and mid afternoon). Do what you feel capable of, enjoy the company of like-minded people and breathe good fresh air! There is always a task for everyone. No prior knowledge or experience is required, only a willingness to get involved and work hard. Be ready for any weather and any job. After completing 50 hours of volunteering, there is the added bonus of receiving a National Trust volunteers card which entitles you to free entry at all National Trust properties, and discounts in some of their shops and cafes. If you are looking for an opportunity to spend time outside, give something back to the countryside and have fun – whatever your age or abilities – you can get in touch by contacting Dick Pole at dickpole@zcl-uk.net The work schedule and additional information can be at chesterntv.wordpress.com/ programme/

hen the Queen turned 90 on 21 April, she served as a very public reminder of how much longer, as a society, we are living. In her own family, four generations are now all alive at the same time, from the Queen herself down to her latest great grandchild, Princess Charlotte. An increasing number of families now find themselves in the same position, which has implications for financial planning. As a nonagenarian, Her Majesty is far from alone. The number of people over 90 years old rose by a third between 2002 and 2012, according to a report published by the Office for National Statistics in 20151. It also says that the number of over-85s in the UK is likely to more than double by 2039, to 3.4 million; longevity and the multi-generational family are here to stay2. Another key phenomenon that is changing is how we manage our wealth against the backdrop of a growing generational wealth gap. The economy was kind to those born in the years immediately after the Second World
War, and in the 1950s, but less so to those born in the 1980s and 1990s – the so-called ‘millennial generation’ – who are finding it harder to get jobs and to get onto the property ladder. It means many parents are having to support their children financially well into their adult lives. While our children are struggling with their finances, our parents are living longer. This has led to an increase in the need for long-term care, which is likely to be financed from accumulated savings, selling the family home or with support from younger generations. This changing dynamic has raised the prospect of a renewed social contrast between the generations – the idea that we collectively support each other through the stages of our lives, and do so fairly. Thus, the prospect of transferring assets from one generation to the other, often within our own lifetimes, is becoming much more common. St. James’s Place provides a range of familyorientated financial products and services, enabling families to work collaboratively to support each

MP calls for action afterrural bus service is cancelled
MP Antoinette Sandbach raised the issue of rural bus services during Business Questions in response to the decision to cancel the once a week bus service between Chester and Tiverton. In her question, the Conservative MP Eddisbury called on the government to hold a debate on rural transport provisions and highlighted the struggles that many residents face when services are cut. Following the debate, she said: “It is vital that people, especially in rural areas, have access to good transport links to access basic services such as a post office, supermarket or pharmacy. It is unacceptable that bus services in small isolated villages such as Tiverton, which currently only run once a week, have now been cancelled and travel times to hubs such as Winsford and Chester are getting longer. This is an issue that has been raised with me by a number of residents and I hope that both the local council and Government will listen.” This intervention follows on from the MP’s previous concerns about the lack of accessibility to local bus services.

YOUR WISHES RESPECTED LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY It is common for people to consider how they would like their estate to be dealt with after they die. However, it is just as important to make the same provision for your affairs during your lifetime in the event that you lose the ability to make decisions yourself.
Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) are documents that provide the legal basis for you to plan in advance for another person to make certain decisions on your behalf. Making an LPA now would provide you with the reassurance that your affairs will be looked after by someone you know and trust to respect your wishes. Contact our Wills, Trusts & Estates Team today for a free half-hour consultation. *To receive your discount please quote LPA OFFER when making your appointment.

Hayley’s health and fitness
Will a personal trainer really help me get to where I want to be? The answer is yes if you get the right one! Think of a trainer as your best friend, your worst enemy, your councillor, your motivational speaker, the person you go to when you are about to give in and someone you will be spending a lot of time with! Therefore it’s vital you pick someone you get along with. Your first decision is Male or Female, males firstly don’t be put off by having a female as your trainer. Don’t for one minute think you will be let off lightly or thing will be easier if you get a female as this is NOT the case. As for men training women, a good trainer will work through what you need to work on and devise a plan that will suit you. So it shouldn’t be unachievable and although you will be sore after your first few sessions, don’t feel like guys are just out to ‘beast you’ (the none technical term for working you too hard that you won’t be able to walk’!) You need to think how much time you have to fit this in, whether its 30 min sessions or an hour, you will need to consider childcare, costs, and how long you can do this for? Think how much you want to achieve your goal, personal training is an amazing tool yet you won’t get the results unless you put the effort in. There is no use training then going home and eating crisps and cakes, what’s the point! Your diet is key and alongside a trainer you must be putting the effort in with your healthy eating also. You can’t do one without the other so plan your meals, food prep and don’t go food shopping on an empty stomach.
Ask for a taster session if you don’t know the person, its important you gel! You will be spending a lot of time with your trainer so make sure you are on the same wave length, so you don’t dread your sessions! Be realistic no matter how good of a trainer you get if you’re not working hard outside your training hours you won’t get results, fact! Don’t expect a few sessions in to have a six pack if you’re out every weekend drinking, you get out what you put in, TIME, EFFORT, COMMITMENT IS THE KEY! GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
Signs of spring
A
t last spring is on the way with plants coming into growth with the lengthening daylight, even if there is frost and snow. Starting with small flowers, grow a drift of snowdrops, either the native single variety or for a change, buy some double snowdrops. As you can see from the photo, the double snowdrop flower is beautiful. Another flower for early spring is the Winter Aconite or Eranthis. This has bright buttercup yellow, glossy flowers on very short stems. Both snowdrops and Aconites prefer a humus rich soil, well drained, usually under larger shrubs or in woodland. Scented shrubs are a joy in winter as they are unexpected but often highly fragrant coming from relatively small flowers. The Winter Box Sarcococca confusa or Sarcococca Hookeriana is a low evergreen (to 80cms) with tiny white flowers, not much to look at but they pack a powerful fragrance which in a small space, will waft on the breeze. Another choice scented shrub is Daphne bholua Jaqueline Postill. Last year I visited Rode Hall to see the snowdrops and they had many of these shrubs in flower. They will grow to 2.5m tall, are evergreen and have clusters of sweetly scented pink flowers (see photo) all over the shrub. Will grow on any well drained but moisture retentive soil but must have shelter from wind and frost. There are some clematis that will flower in mild periods in winter although you have to bear in mind that many have much smaller flowers than the summer varieties. Clematis cirrhosa Jingle Bells or Freckles will flower in early spring. They have small bell shaped flowers in cream and spotted pink with evergreen foliage. These require shelter and a west or south facing position away from frost and with well drained, moisture retentive soil. If you have an apricot or peach growing against a wall or fence do remember to protect the flowers from frost. They flower in late February or early March so to make sure of a crop put a fleece over it when frost is due and remove during the day to allow pollination. Prune Wisteria new stems from last year back to 2 to 3 buds to encourage flowering but leave the fat buds on older wood alone – they should be your flowers for this year! Cut back dead stems from perennials and grasses being careful to avoid damaging any new shoots. Janet Heath Garden Mentor
