There is some bad news about Tarporley Royal British Legion Club which is closing down. Ernest Boynes has written an article in this month’s magazine about its demise. Tarporley Rotary Club is appealing for people to donate their unwanted bikes. You can drop off bikes at Beeston Market on Saturday 10th January and they will be refurbished and sold on for a good cause. Also in this month’s magazine you can read about the latest from Tarporley High School, a donation from the Grange School, Tarporley from above and the regular features such as the what’s on guide, business directory and health and beauty. As usual, please support your local businesses and don’t forget to tell them that you saw their ad in The Talk For the very latest updates please visit our website at www.tarporleytalk.com The Talkabout Team

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Tarporley, Tattenhall, Kelsall, Tarvin &
Bunbury areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Unwanted bikes are wanted!
If you’ve been given a new bike for Christmas and need to get rid of the old one, then Tarporley Rotary Club is appealing for two-wheeled donations. Rotary has linked up with the “Margaret Carey Foundation” who are looking for unwanted bikes. MCF has set up prison workshops where offenders clean, adjust and repair old bicycles (and wheelchairs) to a high standard. They then donate the refurbished goods to communities in need, both in the UK and in developing countries, making life easier and better for disadvantaged people. Tarporley Rotary is holding a bike collection on Saturday 10th January, at Beeston Market from 9am to 1pm. Please bring along and donate your unwanted bikes (of any size or condition) to this worthy cause. Christmas tree collection
‘Alice In Wonderland … pantomime-style’ comes to Tattenhall. Special dates for your diary are Thursday January 29th, Friday January 30th and Saturday January 31st 2015 when TADS take over the Barbour Institute for their annual pantomime. It’s always a splendid night out and this will be no exception so remember the date and there will be more details in Decembers Parish News. Tickets will be on sale from Monday December 29th from ‘complement’ High Street, Tattenhall.
Have your Christmas tree collected by the Just Helping and the Hospice collection team for a small donation to your local hospice. They are in this area on Saturday 10th January and will come and collect your old tree: No queueing at the tip; No mess in your car; Green recycling Online registration is at wwwcharityxmastree collection.com

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER Message from the Neighbourhood Planning Group Following on from the recent very successful Informal Consultation, here is an up-date on the number of houses to be built in Tarporley during the period 2010 – 2030 . The Cheshire West and Chester Local Plan states that at least 300 dwellings are required for Tarporley and to date we are not far from that figure. To date the situation is as follows:l 42 already built, including 34 at Oswald’s Way l 91 currently under construction, including 90 off Brook Rd l 5 granted planning permission, but not yet built l 145 granted outline planning permission, including 100 off Nantwich Rd and 35 off Birch Heath Rd Total 283 However when the full planning applications come in for the Nantwich Road and Birch Heath Road sites, the developers may decide to build less that the numbers they have outline permission for. So while the above figures give a shortfall of 17 houses from the 300 figure, it may well be a shortfall of perhaps 40 - 50 houses. Call for Car Parking Land As part of the quest to improve parking provision the Parish Council would like to hear from anyone who has land that could be used for public parking in the village. Readers will know that the Parish Council is concerned about congestion and the damage to trade on High Street, so if you have any land close to the centre of the village that could be used please contact the Parish Clerk. Previously we let people know that there are 10 more parking bays in the public car park behind the Rising Sun. We are also working with the Community Centre to ncrease the parking there. A village parking survey (available www. tarporley.org.uk/htdocs/publications.htm) was carried out and drivers were asked their reason for parking as well as recording the arrival,
Hedges and Trees overhanging the Highway The Parish Council have again received a number of complaints from residents and we repeat a timely reminder on this subject. The Council is aware of a number of problem areas around the village. Please could residents cut back any hedges and trees on their property that are overhanging the pavement. It makes life difficult for pedestrians, particularly those walking with children; and with a pushchair or wheelchair. People are forced to walk on the verge or even into the road to get passed the vegetation. Overgrowth of rural hedges can obstruct visibility at junctions and on bends. The basic rule is if the tree or hedge is growing in your garden, you are responsible for keeping it cut back on the pavement/road side. Vegetation growing on the pavement or the road and fallen leaves are the responsibility of the Council. departure and length of stay. One key finding was that it would be disastrous to try and improve matters by introducing time limited parking. There are more cars parked throughout the day than there are parking spaces! There are a significant number of cars parked illegally and there are times during the day when all parking spaces are filled. The number of people parking to catch the bus seems to be quite small, meaning that a car park on the edge of the village for bus passengers would not improve matters. Therefore we are seeking land close to the centre which can be used for parking. This may be a green field, a brown field site or a private car park with spare capacity. Cheshire West and Chester Council may be persuaded to lease it and we could designate it as land for car parking in the Neighbourhood Plan.

Parish Council Meetings
The Parish Council meets in the Committee Room of the Community Centre at 7 pm on the second Monday of each month, with the exception of August. Meetings are open to the public, and start with an Open Forum session, during which members of the public can address the whole Council on matters of concern to them. Also the Parish Council holds a surgery at 6.30 pm prior to each Parish Council meeting when members of the public are welcome to discuss matters with councillors on an informal basis.
Christmas Lights Tarporley switched on its Christmas lights on the evening of Friday 5th December . It was a cold but dry evening and a large crowd was entertained by the Primary School choir, while Decibellas led the community in singing carols. Children queued to say hello to Father Christmas and they all had the chance to tell him what they hoped for Christmas and many parents captured photos of the moment. The Parish Council would like to thank everyone for attending this event , and to all those who were involved in running it, not forgetting Father Christmas. The Parish Council wishes everyone a very Happy New Year.

Kelsall Beer Festival was the most successful yet The Beer Festival Committee reports that the 6th Annual Kelsall Beer Festival in November was the most successful yet with almost 500 attending over the two nights.
of applause. Thanks to all those in attendance for acknowledging these two significant centenaries.
Sponsorship was higher than in previous years and the overall balance being the best to date which was the result of some very enthusiastic drinking with very little going to waste.
Festival chairman Terry Harrop said: “We would also wish to thank Kelsall Primary School, for the use of some of their pupil paintings signifying the WW1 scenes, and also to the two Brownies Groups in Kelsall for their collages celebrating their own centenary.
This Festival also commemorated the centenary of the start of WW1 with a period of silence being held on both evenings and also the centenary of the formation of the Brownies Group recognised by a short period
“Over the two nights some £12,150 was raised, made up of sponsorship, entry fees, beer tokens, wine, food and, of course, the raffle. With all expenses accounted for, £6,525 was left for distribution to the major beneficiaries (St
Philip’s Church, Kelsall Primary School, Kelsall PreSchool and Clatterbridge Cancer Research Kelsall Branch) with smaller donations to the two Kelsall Brownie packs, The Royal British Legion and Help the Heroes. “Thank you to all the sponsors, to all the helpers, bar volunteers and everyone who did anything to help, however much, however little it was all invaluable. And a special thank you to you, the drinkers - it makes all the hard work so worthwhile and rewarding. “Here’s to 2015 Festival which will be held over the weekend of 14/15 November 2015 at the Kelsall Community Centre.”
Games expert at school Tarporley High School IT and computing students attended a guest speaker session from Chris Payne. Chris has a career in the games industry as a Senior Games Mechanic, and has worked on many Lego games. “The session was very interesting and eye-opening to see how much work actually goes into the games we all play daily,” said Eloise Nuttall.

A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of
the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

The champion chefs of Year 11 Year 11 students entered their final Cook Off competition last term and yet again surpassed all expectations.
Four tutor groups entered the competition to create and prepare a three course meal in one hour. Judges were treated to a range of dishes including artichoke and cream cheese dip with a range of crudities, Moroccan spicy chicken and
melt in the middle chocolate pudding.
The standard was excellent and all students took the competition very seriously with a tense atmosphere before the results. The 11AW team of Eilidh Bodfish, Sally Heath, Lucy O’Neill and Rachel Overy retained their title as champions
English department gets ready for exam change Tarporley’s English department has joined forces with Manchester Art Gallery on a creative writing project. The aim of the Max Reinhardt Literacy Awards is to support a creative writer in designing and delivering a dedicated programme of creative writing and literacy work with schools. During its pilot year, Tarporley’s English department was selected for its proposal in collaboration with the gallery, which intends to drive forward teaching of the new writing
for the final year, having won overall menu in all previous events.
Also, congratulations to Ben Steward, Olivia Taylor and Charlotte-Thomas Wood for finishing second and to the two runner up groups; Poppi Dickins, Meg Challoner, Luci Hartwell, Zak Burras-Stubbs and James Ryder.
elements of the 2015 AQA English Language GCSE. With a move to 100% examination in 2015 cohort, the school wants to prepare students with methods to tackle writing in formal assessment situations. The resources created as a result of this collaboration will be shared nationwide to support English KS4 teaching in a range of settings. The approaches will be trialled with two Year 9 classes, a high ability group, and a lower ability group, and by the end of this year’s pilot these students will have taken part in workshop sessions both at the gallery, and in school.

Sixth Form College Festive fun for linguists A Level English Language students attended a linguistic conference in Manchester, hearing lectures and receiving exam tips from key AQA examiners. The key examination topics were covered and students left with a clear idea about how to achieve academic success this summer. Chloe Lupton, Year 13, said: “It was so reassuring to hear terms and advice which our teachers had already reinforced. I left the conference with new mnemonics to help structure my essays and a deeper understanding of the Assessment Objectives. A great day!” In addition to this, we also enjoyed sampling the culinary delights and seasonal treats on offer at Manchester’s fantastic Christmas Market, adding a festive flavour.
When art and plants collide A talented group of Year 9 pupils dug deep and saw their artistic talents cultivated by producing a series of sculptures inspired by the ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. In collaboration with the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester, pupils Zara Whyke, Oscar Culliford, Lauren Bellamy, Ryleigh Davies, Anna Steward, Megan Rigby, Caitlin Lee, Lauren Walker, Sophie Davies, Emma Howe, Georgia Hazeldine and Kate Edge were set the challenge of producing alien-like plants from an assortment of materials, ranging from wire and plaster bandage to spray paint and fabrics. Head of Art Mr Bowland said: “It’s fantastic to see independent creative young minds work with such passion and skill, producing work of such a high calibre. The students are a role model for the Art department and highlight the great range of talent we have here at Tarporley.” The final outcomes will be displayed in an installation inside the Royal Exchange Theatre and feature in the production which will be on show until 31st January.

TARPORLEY CE SCHO Tarporley CE Primary School has bounced back with a vengeance to earn huge praise from education inspectors. Only 18 months after an Ofsted inspection which said the school ‘required improvement’, it has turned the corner and is now ‘Good School with Outstanding Behaviour & Safety’. Head teacher Kerry Forrester said: “This is a fantastic outcome for our school to have achieved in such a short period of time, I am thrilled that they have recognised our Outstanding children here at Tarporley CE.” Mrs Forrester was praised for her commitment, energy and clear vision for the future of the school. Inspectors spent two days in the school where they recognised outstanding features in Leadership and Management;
Quality of Teaching; Achievement of Pupils and Early Years Provision They reported that the quality of teaching has improved since the last inspection and continues to improve. Mrs Forrester added: “We are delighted with the report and feel that the Inspectors have recognised all of the positive elements of our school and the journey we are on.” The Inspectors felt that ‘lans to improve the school concentrate on the correct areas, with the current focus rightly being on raising pupils’ standards in writing. This is the one aspect of the school’s work which prevents leadership from being judged outstanding.’ The only area in which the report suggested the school could progress further was to ‘Accelerate pupils’ progress in writing, so that their standards in

that the hard work of our children and staff has been acknowledged by Ofsted resulting in an excellent report. We are all so very proud of our school and we know that we are well on our way to becoming outstanding.” added Mrs Forrester.

health & beauty with Angela Bartlett
Q. My skin becomes very red and often feels quite sore during the winter months. Why, and what can I do about it?
Q. My grandmother only ever used Pond’s cream and her skin was beautiful. Why do we need to use anything different?
A. Dehydration-induced skin sensitisation is a common problem during the winter months. As temperatures plummet we notice a marked difference in the appearance and condition of our clients skin. Winter is a challenging time for skin when it can become stripped of its NMF (natural moisturising factor) due to low outdoor temperatures, low humidity and indoor heat sources.
A. Modern living is giving our skin a whole variety of different challenges compared to those that your grandmother’s skin encountered.
The skin needs to be treated gently at this time of year. Choose facial treatments and skin care products that help to restore the barrier function of the skin. Certain botanicals and peptides help to mimic the skins natural protective barrier to enable it to cope better during winter. And remember, consistency is key to improve skin condition so ensure you use products at home regularly. They don’t do your skin any good when they are in the bathroom cabinet!
Research carried out by Estee Lauder showed that women living in more polluted areas had 20% more age spots on their hands and Proctor and Gamble found a 10% increase in skin ageing in people exposed to airborne pollutants. We are exposed to a large number of ‘hormone disruptors’ in our modern times, and hormones have a direct impact on the condition of our skin. Exposure to ultra violet radiation has also increased since your grandmother’s day which is having a disastrous impact on our skin. Therefore, modern products need to address these factors to improve skin condition. Find out more about your skin on our blog page at www.sensoriabeauty.co.uk

Sadness as British Legion Club closes its doors December 31st 2014, the centenary year of the outbreak of World War One, will be a sad day for Tarporley as on that day the Royal British Legion Club will close, writes Ernest Boynes. Probably established after WW1 following the creation of the British Legion, it was designed to provide a centre of comradeship and social interaction for those servicemen who returned from duty and a place where the community, many of whom had lost fathers, sons and daughters sons during the war, together with those severely injured and who required help both medical and financial. There was no NHS
or welfare state in those days. It was up to the members of the community to rally around and look after one another. Over the last 30 or so years, for a variety of reasons including the theft of funds and apathy on the part of the community the club went into serious decline. The current committee, over the recent few years have devoted many hours of their time and struggled desperately to remedy the situation, but the task has proven to be too great. They have successfully been able to recover the current financial situation, so operationally the club is in the black, but as a result of previous neglect the building has fallen

into such a state of structural dilapidation that they cannot possibly raise the ÂŁ50,000 required to carry out essential repairs. Grants are available towards these repairs but in order to qualify the club must have a minimum of a ten year lease. Should the club fail before the end of the ten years the individual members of the committee would be personally liable for the outstanding amount. The Royal British Legion will not renew the lease until such time as all the repairs have been carried out and have asked for a significant increase in rent, so the committee was left with no option but to put a motion of closure to the members. Future At a meeting of club members on Thursday 5th December they voted by a majority that it should close. What will now happen to the site, which could include the allotments and bowling green? At
present this is uncertain and will depend of the decision of the Trustees. Although there are all sorts of opinions as to the contents of the Deed of Trust there is no certainty as they have not been published locally. What is certain is that there will be a number of interest groups putting their case forward, but the ultimate decision will be made by the Trustees in line with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 and to further the Objectives of the Royal British Legion, which, in summary is to provide care, help and assistance, throughout their life, to those members and exmembers of the armed forces and their families who are in need. Apathy and disinterest towards the club by the community and its leaders has now resulted in the loss of an asset the community should have valued, leaving much uncertainty as to the future of the site.

Regular readers will by now be getting quite familiar with Carol and Bill and their family but this month I’d like to introduce you to their very good friends Jill and David. Like their friends, Jill and David were in full time employment, and had two children, albeit a little younger. Both children were at school, the eldest Clare was studying towards A Levels and Liam at 14 had turned overnight it seemed into someone unable to string together more than a grunt by way of conversation and they were seriously concerned that his fingers would need to be surgically removed from his X Box control. The usual worries of teenage children aside, Jill and David had reasonable income from their respective employers, although most of it was used to meet the day to day bills. They still had a mortgage, had money purchase pension arrangements with their employers which also included some death in service life insurance benefits, they tried to take a holiday every year, and had managed to put money aside each month in readiness for university fees. In short, they were jogging along quite nicely, a lottery win of course would always be welcome, but they felt they had things reasonably well covered. You never quite know what fate has in store for you though, and 2 years ago Jill was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 48. If you’ve been in this position, or have someone close to you who has, you will know that the first reaction is usually shock and disbelief, closely followed by anger and fear. Jill’s treatment consisted of 6 months chemotherapy, followed by radiotherapy and finally surgery, and she would be unable to return to work for 12 months. Jill’s company were very understanding, they had provision for 3 months sick pay, but were quite small and didn’t have the ability to pay her for any
longer than this. Now as well as the worry over her treatment and recovery, was the financial worry of meeting their outgoings from only one salary, without having to dig into the “university” pot for the children. 5 years ago, Jill and David had moved house and had just taken on additional mortgage borrowing. They knew they needed life insurance to cover the mortgage debt and their friends Carol and Bill had suggested they have a chat with me. We talked about why life insurance was important to them, neither wanted to feel that the other was left paying a mortgage if the other were to die before the end of the term. They hadn’t given any thought to what would happen if one or the other developed a serious illness which might affect their ability to work. Although at the time, it meant spending more than they had anticipated, both decided that they would include critical illness on their mortgage life policy. By the time Jill was undertaking her first chemotherapy treatment, the outstanding balance on their mortgage had been fully repaid, which also freed up an additional £500 per month as they no longer had mortgage repayments to make. Jill would be the first to say that she would rather have not had cancer and still be paying the mortgage, but on the issue of her health she really didn’t have a choice, she did though have a choice 5 years ago, when she and David decided to include critical illness cover on their protection policy.
”
As always, Jill and David are not real clients, although their story is factual.

Gardening by Janet Heath
Plants to cheer the bleak midwinter The new year is a challenging time if you want flowers in your garden. Here are some ideas of plants that will brighten your day in winter. I love Hellebore orientalis which will really give you large colourful flowers in white, pink and velvet dark purple. They are easy to grow and are better suited to slightly shady spots where the soil does not dry out. I always warn my clients that the sap is poisonous and could cause vomiting if ingested or irritation to the skin. So always wear gloves when touching the plants and wash your hands thoroughly after handling. Alnwick Castle Gardens has these plants in their poison garden for good reason! Iris unguicularis is a winter flowering iris which will open
flowers in milder spells. The thin strappy foliage is not attractive but the flowers are beautiful, as you can see from the photograph. Another favourite of mine is the winter flowering cherry, Prunus sibhirtella Autumnalis. This is a small tree which has flowers on and off all winter in milder temperatures. The branches are covered in pink flowers on leafless stems and look very attractive against a dark fence or hedge. Sarococca or Winter Box is another good plant for winter. It has tiny white flowers giving off a heady scent. It is evergreen, will get to about 1m tall in time and will also tolerate lower light levels. For flowers from December to March plant a winter cherry, a couple of Sarcococca,
underplanted with hellebores, Iris unguicularis, snowdrops, small daffodils and chinodoxa and you will have flowers from December to March, year after year. There is some work to do in your garden in January starting with pruning fruit trees and bushes except plums and cherries. Grape vines should be pruned before mid January. After this time the sap begins to rise and the cuts will bleed. Order your first early seed potatoes and set them on a windowsill in a cool place to chit ready to plant out early varieties in March. Plant bare rooted fruit trees and shrubs if the soil is not frozen. Mulch the plants with manure around the roots to protect from freezing.
