George’s memory lives on with foundation gifts A foundation set up in memory of a Tarvin student who tragically died in a road accident continues to benefit the local community nearly two years after his death. The George Heath Foundation was set up by his family following his death on the A49 near Tarporley in March 2016 This year alone, £1,000 has been given to Tarvin Community Centre to fund outdoor areas and storage, and £600 has been donated to Tarvin Community Woodland for new educational signs at Grogans Walk. The foundation has also funded a mud kitchen at Tarvin PreSchool Nursery, chairs for Tarporley War Memorial Hospital day room and funds to help Charlie Horton receive treatment for a brain tumour in the USA. The funds have been raised by sponsored runs in the Chester Half Marathon, the George Heath Memorial football match and prize bingo.

Ducati motorbike stolen from Tarvin Detectives investigating the whereabouts of a motorbike following a burglary in Tarvin are appealing for information. Burglars broke into a house on Hallfields Road and stole a Ducati motorbike some time between 3rd and 4th December. The bike is yellow, red and white in colour and is particularly used for racing. Detective Constable Paul Boneham, of Chester Beat Initiative Team, said: “This is a distinctive racing bike and would stand out in comparison to other motorbikes. “If anyone has seen someone attempt to use the bike or saw anyone in the area acting suspiciously around the time the bike was stolen, I would encourage you to contact us on 101.”

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF In 1968 my mother established The Bunbury Agency when she could not find that ‘Special Person’ to look after her own three children. I joined the Bunbury Care Agency in 2004 and now, along with my efficient team of care coordinators and advisors, I am privileged to own and run the Agency, writes Sarah Green, director of the Bunbury Care Agency. Nowadays, our energies are totally focused and committed to providing that ‘Special Person’ for other families who are in need of trustworthy and reliable elderly care and companionship. As part of our celebrations for our 50th year, we are launching support for a ‘Charity of the Month’. As communicating through Social Media is so important these days, for every 100 ‘Likes’ on Facebook, we will donate £100 to that charity. Some will be local, others national, such as the Alzheimer’s Society. We will also offer one of daily clients a carer, free of charge, who will take them out for tea and cakes for a couple of hours.

OF CARING FOR OTHERS! A bit about us 2018 is our 50th Anniversary and we have some big plans. We have just opened a sister branch of the Bunbury Care Agency on the island of Anglesey called, guess what, ‘Anglesey Home Care’! My other half has a house there and after considerable research, I have found that there is big demand for the type of personal care and attention our agency prides itself on. So many things have happened in bringing this together, which has been quite a ‘Serendipity’ experience; ‘the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way’.

Care at Home Being cared for at home gives you freedom of choice, flexibility and the ability to live the way you wish with a care package that is uniquely tailored to your needs. After 50 years of caring, we know that most people can remain living in their own homes with the right care, support and companionship. l We care about the many elderly and vulnerable people who struggle to look after themselves properly, manage their personal care or have poor mobility. l We care about those who need some daily care and help with preparing meals, shopping and housekeeping or those who may just be lonely and in need of a friendly face every so often. l We care about those who need respite care or a break from looking after their own relatives and would benefit from someone providing live in care for short periods such as weekends or overnight.

Anglesey Home Care Anglesey Home Care is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Bunbury Care Agency. We look forward to provide our carer services to all the communities on the island. Please contact us at Bunbury for further information. Please contact us on 01829 260280

‘Everybody needs somebody’ My mother’s phrase, ‘Everybody Needs Somebody’ is still so relevant today. So on behalf of myself and my fantastic team, we look forward to doing our utmost to help you. I passionately believe and know that with the right care and support, most people can spend their later years in their own home. We look forward with great enthusiasm and excitement to lifting the burden on families and providing care and support you can trust, to many more people in the future. With our expertise in coordinating high quality elderly care and companion housekeeping services in the home, you can trust and rely upon our excellent team of carers. We look forward to an exciting 2018. Sarah Green – Director Campaigning to help people remain living in their own homes

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL Newsletter

Thanks for making the festive lights event so special The Parish Council were pleased to see so many people come to the Christmas Lights event under the chestnut tree on Friday 1st December, to join in blessing the crib and to sing carols. Thanks to Decibellas, The Tarporley Silver Band and the Primary School Choir for their musical contributions. Father Christmas was there too, though he did have some difficulty getting down the High Street in his sledge because of a traffic jam! We were particularly proud of this year’s carol sheet designed by the staff from Tarporley News, with its information about World War One and its introduction to next year’s events under the banner of Tarporley Remembers 2018. Thanks go to Tarporley Rotary Club and Inner Wheel for running their stalls which collected over £800 from which a donation will be made to Tarporley Hospital, and to Cheshire Lamont who served refreshments as well as collecting money for charity. However the continued failure of the lights on the Christmas Tree has been great disappointment to the Parish Council. We are still hoping at the time of writing this, that the firm who have been commissioned to provide the lights will have sorted out the problems before too long. We can only apologise to the village.

Tarporley Remembers 2018 If you would like to know more about Tarporley Remembers 2018, follow them on facebook@ tarporleyremembers and read about some of the Tarporley people who died in World War One.

Primary School expansion begins The work to expand the Primary School has already started with the demolition of the bungalow, adjoining their site on Park Road. This will initially be used as a site for the builders while work is undertaken on the school itself. While everything is being done to minimise the disruption in the village, we are sure there will be some, so we ask for everyone’s patience and understanding. The project finish date is the end of August 2018, ready for the new school year and its intake in September of additional pupils.

Community centre car parking The Parish Council is planning the production of leaflets about the car parks in Tarporley, their location and size, which will be available in every shop and business. It seems that people are not aware of all the car parks, and often the one behind the Community Centre is not full. Its 3 hour maximum stay time makes it ideal for people shopping in the village.

Volunteers need to show true grit! The Parish Council are looking for volunteers who would like to join group of people who grit the pavements around where they live. Training, equipment and insurance provided. If you are interested please contact Abbie, one our clerks at clerk@tarporley.org.uk or Tel 01829 732516. And finally may Tarporley Parish Council wish you a happy New Year and a peaceful, healthy and prosperous 2018. 12 To advertise call 01244 350398

Have-a-go-hero is given yet another bravery award A former soldier and local dad-of-three has been commended with his third national bravery award in just three years. Richard Whitehouse, 46, received the Sheriff’s Award for Bravery Certificate of Commendation, which recognises and honours individuals who have shown courage and initiative in protecting, people or liberty. The award was presented at a prestigious awards ceremony in London on 22nd November following a nomination by the Metropolitan Police. In January this year, Mr Whitehouse intervened during an armed robbery at a Jewellers shop in the City of London, during which he was attacked with ammonia and threatened with an axe. He tackled a suspect to the ground and pinned them to the ground until police could arrive, which led to the suspect being arrested and charged with robbery. For the same incident, the security consultant was also commended with a Gold Medal during the 2017 Police Public Bravery Awards. Richard, who now lives in Nantwich but has daughters attending Tarporley High and Kelsall Primary School, said: “It’s humbling to be recognised with these awards as I don’t feel like I’ve done anything special, but I’m very grateful to have been able to intervene and make a difference”. The nationwide award tops a trio of acclaim for Mr Whitehouse – in July 2014 he received the Chief Constables Commendation from the Cheshire Constabulary following an incident in Kelsall where he chased a suspected arsonist, later leading to a successful conviction. In his spare time Mr Whitehouse has also raised over £2,500 for charity, through various endurance challenges such as completing seven marathons in seven days, twice in two years, to support army veterans.

Parents of child with meningitis raise £10,000 for hospital

A family whose child fell ill with Meningitis in March this year presented Mid Cheshire Hospitals Charity with a cheque for £10,000, following their fantastic fundraising efforts. Pippa and Lee Rawlinson’s son, Jude, fell ill with Meningitis earlier in the year. The couple were so grateful for their son’s care on the Children’s Ward at Leighton Hospital, they decided they wanted to give something back to show their appreciation. Jude is back home and well on his way to recovery and to ensure that care can continue to be given to any children unfortunate enough to contract the Meningitis virus in the future, they aim to raise a total of £20,000. Having reached the half way mark, they presented a cheque to Emma Robertson, charity manager and Dr Simon Burns, consultant paediatrician, which will contribute to the current renovations taking place to make the new ward more “child friendly” and less frightening for younger patients. Pippa will be competing in a white collar boxing match in March as part of her fundraising. 16 To advertise call 01244 350398

Beauty salon open as usual despite hotel closure

A beauty salon based at the Wild Boar is reassuring customers that it is still open despite the hotel’s closure. The Beeston hotel shut down last year in the wake of Storm Doris, where it sustained damaged to the timber framed mock Tudor building. Although information about the future plans for the hotel are sketchy, it is believed that the new owners are planning to restore the iconic building to its former glory. Angela Bartlett, who runs Sensoria, based in the hotel, said: “Just to let everyone know that Sensoria is still open for business as usual. It has been a family home, a school, a hotel and will reemerge as something even more fabulous so watch this space!” The opening times for Sensoria at The Wild Boar are as follows: Monday 9am-6pm; Tuesday 9am 12noon; Wednesday, Thursday & Friday 9am-8pm; Saturday and Sunday 9am-5pm. Duddon War Memorial Hall A replacement chairperson is needed for the War Memorial Hall, Duddon to be involved in ongoing projects. TARPORLEY HIGH SCHOOL & SIXTH FORM COLLEGE

An open and shut case for students Year 10 students were given a presentation about the Trunki case by former Tarporley student Rob Law. Rob, who made his name with an appearance on Dragons’ Den, was quizzed by the students as part of an Aspire Day where they considered their plans for work experience and beyond.

Tarporley’s karate kid overcomes anything! Year 9 student Bethany Daley has battled back from a serious injury to become a second dan black belt in karate. Bethany began karate at the age of eight and very quickly progressed to her first world championships two years later. Then, in 2016 she was due to compete at the world championships in Dublin but had to pull out due to injury. She developed a Pars fracture to her lower vertebrae which meant 13 weeks in a back brace. After her brace came off in the February she began training straight away with the target of taking part in the European Championships in Romania in April. She did brilliantly, reaching the final in Romania in the KATA category and came 5th! Recently, after waiting for two years, she graded to Black belt 2nd dan with the highest grading marks of the day.

HEALTH & BEAUTY By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing

Sunscreen in January? Surely not! By Angela Bartlett, Owner Sensoria Beauty If you are interested in preventing prematurely aged skin then….Yes! you need sunscreen, even in January. This is because whenever their is light, there are ultraviolet light rays and it is rays that cause prematurely aged skin. Of course there is much more ultraviolet light during the summer months, but even in winter, spring and autumn there are ultraviolet rays and it is this long term, low level exposure that also adds to your yearly dose of wrinkle formation! And it’s not just wrinkles that ultraviolet light encourages, it is uneven skin pigmentation (age spots) that it increases too which also makes the skin look older than it really is. As a skin care professional with over 34 years of experience, I have always thought that ‘sunscreen’ should be called ‘light screen’, this especially important for clients who want to preserve and protect their skin against the ravages of time. It is also important to know that ultraviolet rays are ‘cold’ rays, you feel no warmth from them, so you cannot rely on warmth to assess the exposure you may be getting from the light. The heat you feel from sunlight are from infra red rays which give you that wonderful, relaxed feeling. When clients ask me “what is your best anti-ageing cream?” I always reply, “sunscreen”. Once I have got a client onto a good facial sunscreen we can then introduce other vitamin and peptide rich products to see improvements in their skin condition, but not before. If you want to find out more about sunscreens for your face please visit the blog page on our website www.sensoriabeauty.co.uk

Author returns with pictorial history book Local author Mark Bevan has released a new book ‘Tarporley & Beeston Country Revisited’. It is ten years since Mark, who lives in Hargrave, penned his original ‘Tarporley & Beeston Country’ and the latest work contains much new material including 70 new illustrations. Mark said: “This beautiful area, with Beeston Castle at its heart, is steeped in history from the king who buried his treasure to Oulton Hall’s Tragedy. They are all here. New material includes Huxley’s Clive of India, Beeston Hill Climb, colour photographs from Oulton Park’s historic first motor-race meeting, whilst adding to the more recent flavour are the Cheshire Ice Cream Farm, Cotebrook Shire Horse Centre and Bunbury’s captivating TV series ‘Home Fires’.” It is on sale locally at Ian Swaffield’s, in Tarporley High Street, and at the Cotebrook Shire Horse Centre, or may be purchased via CC Publishing’s website: www.cc-publishing.co.uk.

Make a new year’s resolution to make a difference Local charity, Home-Start are launching a New Year campaign to recruit volunteers from in and around Tarporley; we are asking people to make a New Year’s resolution to reach out and support families in 2018. Home-Start recruit and train volunteers to help families with young children. The volunteers, who know about being a parent, support other parents by visiting them in their homes for a couple of hours each week. Volunteers offer families practical help and advice, emotional support and friendship. In return Home-Start offer full support, training and expenses. Christine Baker, manager of Home-Start said: “We are so proud of the support our wonderful team of volunteers give to families in Cheshire. 58 To advertise call 01244 350398

With even more volunteers joining our team we can reach out and help more families”. Tricia, a volunteer for Home-Start said “I have been a Home-Start volunteer for the past few years and it has had such a positive impact on the families I have visited and also for me personally. It is incredible how much of a difference just a couple of hours chatting with Mum or playing with a toddler can make. It’s hugely rewarding and a great privilege.” If you feel you could make a difference to families with young children and use your experience as a parent to help others the charity wants to hear from you. Rare spiders discovered in Delamere Cheshire Wildlife Trust were delighted to hear the results of a recent spider survey, carried out by the Tanyptera Trust, in Delamere, which has revealed two rare spiders. The nationally rare jumping spider, Sitticus floricola, was found at two new sites, bringing the total number of sites where this species has been recorded in Cheshire to ten. Measuring between 3.5mm and 7.5mm across this small day hunting spider uses its big eyes to judge its impressive jumps. Another spectacular find was the rare money spider, Glyphesis cottonae, which was found at four new Delamere sites. The survey results revealed that the number of sites where this species has been recorded in Cheshire has almost doubled. Both species live on sphagnum found in the boggy areas of Delamere Forest. The extensive restoration work carried out over the last four years, through a partnership between Cheshire Wildlife Trust and the Forestry Commission, has involved rewetting areas of the forest to bring them back to their natural state.

62 To advertise call 01244 350398

The British Arachnological Society recently published their Spider Status Review in which Glyphesis cottonae was listed as vulnerable (nationally rare), and Sitticus floricola as near threatened (nationally rare). Katie Piercy, Delamere Mossland Officer at Cheshire Wildlife Trust has been involved in the project to re-wet areas of the Forest. “Species such as these rare spiders thrive in bog habitats and that’s exactly what we have been working hard to create in Delamere. The fact that the number of sites where these species are being recorded has increased mean that our work is achieving its aim of re-establishing this habitat. Dragonflies and plant species have also benefited and we have been able to record significant differences in the variety of species now using the sites.” This habitat restoration project won a CIEEM (Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management) Best Practice Award this year. The work is supported by Natural England, WREN’s FCC Biodiversity Action Fund, the British Dragonfly Society and Cheshire West and Chester Council.

I’m currently experiencing a very strong feeling of déjà vu! You see, I’ve worked in the Financial Services Industry for a long time, either providing Financial Planning Advice or, for a period of time, working in risk and compliance. The risk and compliance role was never going to be where I spent my career, I enjoy meeting new people too much, but it was key in developing my approach to delivering financial planning advice to my clients. So, why am I telling you this, and why do I have the feeling that I’ve been here before? Four words, “Defined Benefit Pension Schemes”. It’s fair to say that most of you reading this will probably have already switched off, and if you’re already retired or your pension arrangements are in money purchase arrangements, otherwise known as Defined Contribution schemes, it may not seem relevant. If you do have a Defined Benefit Scheme though, I would be amazed if you haven’t seen at least one press article either berating the “underfunded state” of many schemes, extolling the virtues of high transfer values, and the additional flexibility that is available through money purchase schemes in terms of accessing funds, but not to the same extent, a feature of Defined Benefit Schemes. All of these points are statements of fact, many schemes are indeed underfunded, many are offering what on the face of it appear to be higher cash transfer values, and it’s also true that the pension freedoms which came into force in 2015 don’t apply to Defined Benefit Schemes. But, and this is where my feeling of déjà vu comes from, I was around in the early 90’s when many people were being advised to leave excellent defined benefit schemes, on the premise of higher returns in

the stock market, with the resultant pensions miss-selling scandal. Deciding whether to move the guaranteed benefits of a final salary scheme, to the admittedly more flexible, but higher risk money purchase arrangement simply should not be taken on the transfer value alone. There are many considerations, some of which may not immediately be apparent, such as the impact of transfer on your Lifetime Allowance, the guaranteed rates of accrual in deferment, and rates of increase in payment, if you’re considering a transfer and have not heard of, or don’t understand these phrases, make sure that you do before making any decision. On the plus side, it’s not actually possible to transfer a Defined Benefit scheme, unless you do so through a qualified adviser, but the stakes are incredibly high. I make no bones about this, there is, and should be, a lot of work done by an adviser in assessing the suitability of a Defined Benefit Transfer, and the adviser will undoubtedly be (and should be) paid for the work done, but choose your adviser carefully, make sure you can work with him or her for the long term, because you will need to, and make your decisions wisely as once that particular ship has sailed, there’s no going back. If you would like to speak to us about this, or any other aspect of financial planning, please do give us a call on 01948 840738 or 0759 59 28907. Me and my team look forward to hearing from you.

Hayley’s health and fitness

NO MORE EXCUSES.... Make 2018 your YEAR! I hear it all the time, excuse after excuse, granted some are genuine, but when it comes to getting fit and ditching bad food, people really will think of all sorts to put off starting a diet and healthier lifestyle. How many times have you heard people say: “I don’t have the time!” classic for I am not prepared to make time. As a busy working Mum, I completely understand that time is so limited and you almost feel selfish by spending some evenings jumping about a hall getting fit when you could be at home lightening the work load. However, over the years this what happens... Women come to me to get fit before their big day, they lose weight, feel fantastic and vow never to go back to bad habits. They get married life changes and fitness is no longer on the agenda. Comfort eating, bad food choices and minimal movement takes over. What happens... you gain weight and start feeling sluggish, rubbish about self. You buy bigger sized baggy clothes and become stuck in a rut! In the back of your mind you know you should do something about it but pushing yourself to make that first step seems unmanageable. Take a snap of you now and write down how you feel. Pop that away along with the date you took it. Secondly get a diary and note when you can make time for you! With training sessions when devised properly only taking up 30 minutes a night surely you can squeeze a few of these in. Take into account partners shifts, childcare etc. Get a workout buddy, someone who is motivated, someone that will drag you there if need be. Pick a work out you enjoy! There is no point joining a gym if you hate running on a treadmill and have no idea what you’re doing with

weights. It’s about using your time wisely, getting the most from a work out in the shortest amount of time possible! There are so many classes running that will be pay as you go, don’t tie yourself down to contracts - you’ll begrudge it even more if not enjoying it and still have to pay the money. Go and give it your all, you’re there you might as well work your socks off! Try a few different things whether its Zumba, Boogie Bounce, Hiit training, Abs class and remember variety is good! Sticking to one Exercise 3 times per week all year is good but you’ll get more if you mix it up, a good instructor will often change routines and mix sessions up every 4-6 weeks which will allow your body to get more out of it! Lastly stick at it and match your diet to the hard work your putting in. The fact is you will see better results with a good training plan and a healthy varied diet to match. Commitment is the key, make 2018 the year for you! And watch how this has a huge positive impact on the other factors in your life. Track your progress, whether it’s an inch, a dress size, a few lbs anything is better than nothing. Don’t use the scales as your only method of monitoring, remember building muscle means you can drop inches but the scales will stay the same. Don’t get disheartened if you don’t see changes straight away, a good eight weeks of healthy eating and exercises and you will not only feel different your clothes should fit better too. YOUR WISHES RESPECTED LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY It is common for people to consider how they would like their estate to be dealt with after they die. However, it is just as important to make the same provision for your affairs during your lifetime in the event that you lose the ability to make decisions yourself.

Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) are documents that provide the legal basis for you to plan in advance for another person to make certain decisions on your behalf. Making an LPA now would provide you with the reassurance that your affairs will be looked after by someone you know and trust to respect your wishes. GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

Winter colour for January

J

anuary is a time to wait for spring, with bulbs just peeping through. Time to look and appreciate the shapes of evergreens in the garden. There are plants with dramatic shapes such as evergreen Phormiums or New Zealand Flax, with their long sword shaped leaves. They make a bold statement in any garden and come in a range of sizes and colours. Some have white and green leaves, others red, orange, plum and plain green. They need some shelter from wind and a well drained soil with moisture. The smaller ones can be grown in pots, so Bronze Baby with reddish purple tinged leaves will grow to about 1m tall and wide. Some such as Phormium tenax Pupureum will get to 2m tall and almost as wide. Pair them with low Janet Heath Garden Mentor

growing mounded plants around the base. Another plant that will stand out in winter is the pine Picea pungens Hoopsii with pale blue/ grey needles on a slow growing tree which will make up to 4m in time. It needs to be in an exposed position with sunlight all around to make the perfect Christmas tree shape and have moist but well drained soil. To appreciate the tree, plant around it with low growing shrubs such as Euonymus Emerald n Gold or Silver Queen with their variegated foliage. Some winter heathers will be in flower in January with pretty pink or white flowers. Trim the bush back after flowering. If you want more substantial flowers I always recommend Hellebore orientalis varieties. These robust perennials with leathery

01244 318258 / 07984 627270 janet@gardenmentor.co.uk

glossy green leaves and large flowers come in white, pink and deep plum shades, some with speckled flowers, some are double but all flowers in the depths of winter. Cut most of the leaves off in late autumn so you can see the flowers developing. They like medium or heavy soils with plenty of humus and can flower in light shade under larger shrubs. Not ideal in full sun but I have one that copes with being baked in summer! Prune deciduous shrubs and climbers when you can see the branches free of leaves. You can get a good shaped shrub when pruned out of leaf. Pick up and diseased leaves from around the base of roses to try and reduce blackspot next season. Prune apples and pears now but not cherries or plums.

She has also played an important role in running the New Ferry Butterfly Park for the past 25 years. Dr Ash has a half-allotment growing vegetables and fruit. The intriguing title of her illustrated talk is ‘New Ferry Butterfly Park: brickpits to pollinators’.This talk should be of interest to both gardeners and wildlife lovers. Non-members are very welcome, £3.00 at the door.

Peckforton and Beeston WI In December we had a talk by Barry Fewster on the history of Hawkstone Park and Follies. After being left to deteriorate for many years, restoration began in 1992, the Follies were brought back to life and now form a great tourist attraction in the area. Our Christmas party was a huge success as a table magician moved around the room performing the most amazing tricks during our meal. We were all completely mesmerized and astonished at his expertise in the use of misdirection. January brings our New Year’s Lunch and then another year of interesting talks and outings begin; come and join us, you will be very welcome. Margaret Ellis 01829 261898 Kelsall WI We look forward to seeing everyone in the New Year on Wednesday 3rd January for a Coffee Morning to be held at Mary Diggle’s home. We welcome visitors and new members. We meet at 7.30pm on the first Wednesday of each month in Kelsall Methodist Hall.
