CAMPAIGN ON TRACK A RAILWAY station which was flattened over 50 years ago should be re-opened, according to Ian Priestner. He has started a petition to revive the old Tarporley Station at Beeston on the Crewe to Chester line. So far it has attracted a few hundred signatures but who knows where this particular train will stop? We also have news of the closure of Natwest bank in Tarporley, better connectivity in Bunbury, an unusual way of selling milk, Tarvin knitters, a school visit to Westminster, Tarporley Karting success, the results of the moustache challenge at Tarporley High School, muddy fun at Tarvin PreSchool, gardening, health and beauty with Angela Bartlett, the what’s on guide, business directory and health and beauty.

ONE MORE YEAR UNTIL WE CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF CARING!
The Bunbury Care Agency’s reputation continues to grow even after all these years. Whilst we do not look after as many people Nationwide as we used to, we still can, so if you know of anyone who needs our help, please spread the word. We want to help as many people as we can because we know that we make a big difference to so many people and their families.
Some special stories from 2016
call. He could not manage without his dedicated carers and would have had to go into a care home. Working alongside his physiotherapist, he has made some remarkable and total unpredicted improvements. He was virtually paralysed when we started and now is climbing stairs and walking outside. His carers say that every day he says he does not know what he would do without them. This is how it should be. Finally in December, just when we thought we were all sorted for the holiday period we had a call from a family who were desperate to have a carer over the holiday period for their disabled mother. We thought all the carers were booked, but as luck would have it a couple of them re-arranged their schedules to be available to help out. Stories like these make our job of helping vulnerable people worthwhile. I am very proud of all my carers and staff who make this magic happen. Thank you.
In January last year we started looking after a very elderly gentleman in South Wales. His daughter, who works full time, was finding it increasingly difficult to be there for her father, her family and her work. Three of our carers have formed a very successful rota, staying for 2 weeks at a time. This gentleman has reasonable health for his age but is frail. He just needed good companionship, some housekeeping and taking out to lunch! Within months his daughter called to stay our carers had not only transformed his life, but hers as well. She still sees her father every week, but now spends ‘quality time’ with him as all the chores are covered by his carers. In April we had an emergency call to help a local man who had had a severe stroke. He had no family just a very good friend who lived quite a distance away. Within a day we set up an early morning and late evening

SUPER slimmers in Tarvin have lost 7,500lbs in weight over the past year - that’s the equivalent of two family-sized cars. Among the group members is Hayley who has lost 2st 7lb. Hayley said: “Filling up on lots of satisfying foods means you’re never hunger so I’ve never felt as though I was on a diet. Before I joined Slimming World I thought losing weight meant going to the gym and counting calories. But now I know it’s about making healthier choices about food and becoming a bit more active.” The group receive help and advice from leader Vicki Page, who has lost weight herself and understands the ups and downs of slimming.

What’s cooking in George’s mud kitchen THE official opening of the Nursery’s new Mud Kitchen named “George’s Mud Kitchen” took place recently. The mud kitchen was funded by a kind donation from the George Heath Foundation. Gaynor Heath kindly cut the ribbon and shared a few words saying “George would have really approved of this development for the children as he was never happier than when playing in mud and getting really dirty” Lyn Jackson, Nursery Manager shared a few words with the parents and childrenC who joined in with the opening celebrations. She said “We are passionate about children enjoying the outdoors and developing their learning using natural resources. Donations such as this allow us to purchase those “extra Heath special items” and Drive, we are very grateful to the Foundation. George Tarvin, attended the Nursery when younger and later Chester CH3 8LS the Primary School”
Our thanks also go to AK Property & Landscaping who put up the picket fence at cost price, to Liz’s Cake Creations for making the celebration cake, to Nicky from Creating Names for the name plaque, to Luke Butterworth, Regan Williams and the staff and children of the Nursery who all helped with clearing the area, to Dave Turner the school Caretaker for his help and of course to the Primary School for their support in allowing the Nursery to develop an area of their woods.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Tarporley, Tattenhall, Kelsall, Tarvin &
Bunbury areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Tarvin’s busy knitters help dementia patients Tarvin WI Craft Group have been busy knitting Twiddlemuffs for Dementia patients for the Countess of Chester Hospital. Twiddlemuffs are knitted handwarmers with all sorts of twiddly bits attached. Dementia patients who have restless fingers can find some comfort from twiddling with buttons, ribbons and beads. After contacting Sue Burton, dementia co-ordinator, three ladies from the group, Alison Holden, Edna Smith and Margaret Fallon took 13 Twiddlemuffs to Ward 50 at the hospital. They were gratefully received by Sister Katie Mearns (navy uniform) and Nurse Jade Stoddard with Nurse Mandy Wilcox (not pictured). They will be shared between Wards 50 and 51 – the Dementia wards, with each patient taking one home when they are discharged. 38 To advertise call 01244 350398

Fresh milk - just as nature intended
We have proudly milked our herd of pedigree Holstein cows and purebred Jerseys at Street Farm for the past 32 years; our son is the 6th generation farming in Cheshire. Based at the foot of Kelsall Hill, on the A54 in the heart of the beautiful Cheshire Countryside, we are surrounded by the villages of Tarvin, Ashton and Kelsall.
Fresh Raw Milk (unpasteurised)
Direct from the farm to you, dispensed through a vending machine, poly bottles included in the price. Open 7 days a week, 7am – 7pm Street Farm Dairy, Kelsall Road (A54), Tarvin, Chester CH3 8NR. For more information please ring 07474022230
The way the dairy industry is set up at present means we are at the end of the retail chain and as such have no say or control over the price we receive for our milk. Over the last few years we have been paid below the cost of production, so have taken the momentous decision to take some control and sell direct to the consumer. We hope the venture will provide an income that will allow us to invest and offer us a sustainable future for this farm. Fresh from the cow the milk will be cooled and sold through our vending machine called the “Milkbot”. This keeps the milk cool and customers can dispense the amount they want into bottles provided. Fresh Raw Milk (unpasteurised) has a rich, full bodied, clean taste, full of flavour, full of natural goodness, nothing added and nothing taken out, just as nature intended, the nearest thing to a complete food. We believe being able to talk to the producer enhances your enjoyment and satisfaction of the product. We value our Milk, are proud of our Milk and wish to share the taste with people in the local area. We have enjoyed drinking the milk straight from our bulk tanks during the past 32 years and we wish people to experience the taste of Fresh Raw Milk. We look forward to welcoming customer to Street Farm Dairy, Kelsall Road (A54), Tarvin, Chester, Cheshire. CH3 8NR. We are open 7 days a week, 7am till 7pm; we provide the 1 & 2 litre poly bottles and hope to have reusable glass bottles very soon. For more information please see our facebook page – StreetFarmDairyTarvin or ring Joanna on 07474022230.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Winter skin solutions By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing
Q. My skin becomes flaky in winter. What can I do at home to alleviate this? A. Skin can often become dry and flaky during the winter months and it’s important to adapt your skin care routine to address this. The products you were using it the summer won’t be perfect for this colder time of year. There are two areas you need to address - exfoliation and moisturisation. With exfoliation avoid particlebased scrubs as they can lead to irritation and further dryness. Opt instead for an enzyme or fruit acid based exfoliating product to thoroughly but gently remove excess dead skin cells to leave skin smoother and softer. For moisturisation consider changing to an oil-based moisturiser together with a moistursing serum or booster and include a moisturising mask a couple of times a week. Masks are the unsung hero of the skin care world and can add great benefits to your skin care routine. We love Multivitamin Power Recover mask for the winter months. Q. My lips are always sore in winter. Do you have anything to help? A. One of the most effective things you can do, particularly in winter, is to stop licking your lips. You would be surprised at how many clients have sore lips because of lip licking. Check also for nutritional deficiencies such as vitamin B and consider supplementing your diet with a B vitamin complex if necessary. Always keep a lip balm in your pocket and apply frequently. There is no epidermis on the skin of the lips to protect them so they need additional help. We particularly like Climate Control treatment as it’s much thicker and richer than most lip balms, and contains a complex to help damaged skin recover as well as providing an effective barrier against further winter climate assaults. Also, remember to hydrate from within by drinking plenty of water.

Do you need to file a
Tax Return?
Filling in your Self Assessment could be the most stressful thing on your mind at this time of year. Have a read of our suggested approach to your Self Assessment tax return: Are you: l A Company Director? l Self Employed? l Receive income from abroad? l Have untaxed income, for example, interest or rental income? If the answer is yes, then you need to consider completing a return and ensure you consider the following: 1. Are you registered for Self Assessment with HMRC? 2. Do you know your Unique Tax Reference (UTR)? 3. Have you got all the information on your income for the 2015/16 tax year? You will need to collate paperwork such as: Business income and expenses Interest Statements Dividend Vouchers Pension Payment Statement 4. Complete your return. 5. And finally don’t forget to file by 31 January 2017. Filing late will bring you an instant £100 penalty but filing now can mean getting your refund earlier if one is due! You should leave plenty of time to get any help that you might need if you get into difficulties.
It’s a good idea to have an accountant take a look at the return for you. Accountants can get very busy in the run up to the Self Assessment time, so asking early will guarantee that they can allocate time to look at yours.
Foremans offer FREE Self Assessment fee quotes. If you would like to discuss your Self Assessment and get some free advice just call us on 01244 625 500 or email charlotte@foremansllp.com.

As we approach the end of 2016, I’m in reflective mood! It’s been quite a year one way or another. We’ve had sporting triumphs, think Olympics and Andy Murry, although the list goes on. We’ve had brilliant technological and human endeavour with Commander Tim Peake and the International Space Station, which has probably inspired a whole generation of school children, just brilliant. We’ve had huge political upsets, Brexit and the US elections, and this looks set to continue as many European countries take to the polling stations next year. Can we actually influence any of these political turning points, of course the short answer is, probably not. What we can do though is make sure our own houses are in order and again, in my reflective mood, I started to think about the biggest financial turning points in our lives, and how perhaps they have changed over the years. For a long time the order of things probably looked something like this: First Job – First House Purchase – Marriage & Children – Empty Nest – Retirement These days the stages are very different. Often the first job is accompanied by a University debt, which delays the first step on the property ladder. The “Empty Nest” syndrome is coming in much later and often the children fly, simply to return because the first job proves to be elusive and so buying a property isn’t even on the radar. If you are approaching retirement now, your pension pot probably has to do so much more than it once did, I’ve written before about how grandparents are often trying to support three generations from their pension income and accumulated wealth. At the same time, we are living longer but not always with the benefit of robust health, and whilst the state will ultimately step in, not having choice in how or where care is provided would be, for me at least, my worst nightmare. If you are in your 40’s or approaching your 50’s now really is the time to do a health check on your retirement planning. It always
amazes me, how many people, when they are about to retire haven’t even looked at their spending to see if their reduced pension income will be sufficient to pay even the essential bills, never mind actually funding the kind of retirement they may have dreamt of. Simply being a member of your occupational scheme doesn’t mean that you will automatically have a financially comfortable retirement. Blindly believing that the business you run will provide you with sufficient capital to live off for possibly 30 years, without a plan as to how it will do this, is a bit like me thinking because I once cycled from London to Paris for charity, I can now enter the Tour de France! In the area of financial planning, I do understand the many issues we face in a fast changing world, and as we race towards the year end, why not give yourself the present of financial security and peace of mind. Please give us a call on 01948 840738 or 075959 28907 and arrange a meeting without obligation, for something you actually are able to influence.
Carolyn, Alex, Kevin, Pauline and Kate would like to wish you a prosperous and happy New Year.

Novice karter Abbie gets into the winning habit The final National Schools Karting (NATSKA) race event of 2016 took place at the Blackbushe Race Circuit in Camberley in November, with Tarporley Karting Team (TKT) fielding just 8 of the 57 competitors competing. As well as the seven standard race classes there were ‘novice sessions’ which allows new drivers to gain both valuable practice and event signatures which go towards them acquiring a race license. Here are the finishing positions of the TKT competitors: Class 1 (Cadet karts for younger drivers) was split into Novice and Competition, where Abbie Mills picked up the Novice of the Day Trophy and Jake Bastable and Alfie Roberts finished 3rd and 4th respectively in the Competition races. In Class 14 (TKM Restricted engines), it was back to winning ways for Harvey Cole who finished 1st. Harvey continues to show enormous confidence and ability which augers well for his future when he will be competing in one or other of the senior race classes. In Class 7 (TKM) Kurt Roberts came in 3rd, closely followed by Sam Saltmarsh in 4th. This was a particularly good result for Sam as it was the first time that he was ‘gridded’ in this class, having recently completed his 4 ‘back of grid’ entries. GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
Evergreen January MID WINTER can bring icy cold or drab wet days so you will want something cheerful to look at. Yellow and red are cheerful colours in an evergreen shrub. Yellow foliage and scented white flowers in spring can be provided by Choisya ternata Sundance. This is sometimes known as Mexican Orange Blossom. Grow in a sunny sheltered spot, good for a space by a fence or wall but not in an open windswept position. It forms a rounded shape to about 1.5m tall and can be cut back in early spring to keep it to shape. Red foliage can be provided by Photinia Red Robin with glossy leathery leaves and bright red shoots. Best kept trimmed to size in a relatively sheltered space. As a contrast try a Euphorbia characias subsp. Wulfenii – a bit of a mouthful of a name. As you can see from the photo this is a perennial with grey green foliage. It has lime green bottle brush bracts in spring that look very dramatic. Also likes a slightly sheltered position, well drained soil and when happy, will set seed. Just watch for the milky white sap which can cause skin irritation. I also love the ground cover plants that quietly do their bit and are never showy. Bergenias come in many sizes but the smaller ones such as Baby Doll have lovely rich green rounded leaves and stems of pink bell like flowers in spring. Growing to about 30cms tall they make a good edging plant for any relatively moist soil in sun or shade, sheltered or exposed. A contrasting front of border plant would be Euonymus Emerald Gaiety with its cream and green leaves which can be trimmed to make a neat plant about 45cms tall. Not much to do in the garden in January but you can get out and prune apple and pear trees. Established trees should not need much pruning. Any branches that are rubbing, growing inwards or diseased should be cut out. Cut out the top third of the main leaders or side branches to encourage blossom on side shoots. Cut back deciduous hedging such as Beech, Hawthorn and the very spiny Pyracantha. The latter has 2cm long needle sharp spines that are as strong as nails and will go through leather gloves so be careful and wear gloves. Tarporley Talk January 2017 73
Petition calls for re-opening of Tarporley Railway Station A campaign to re-open the long defunct Tarporley Railway Station has begun. Located in Beeston, the station lies on the Crewe to Chester line and has been by-passed since its closure in April 1966 as part of the Beeching report’s reshaping of British Railways. After its closure the station buildings were demolished but the platforms survived. Now, a local man Ian Priestner says it is time to look at reopening the station. He says that over 500 cars an hour using the Chester-Crewe road at peak times so re-opening Tarporley station makes sense and will help with parking too. A petition has been started on the Lib Dem’s man’s campaigning website www. tarporleystationcampaign.co.uk which has attracted over 400 signatures so far. He has even put up a poster near the Red Fox. Ian says: “Let’s get Tarporley Station up and running again. It will allow easier access for many Eddisbury residents saving time especially for those commuting to or visiting the Midlands and London.” Thousands of small stations and branch lines across Britain were closed in the 1960s as the government sought to modernise the network. The formal closure proposal was in 1964 but it took until October 1965 for the station and its neighbour Tattenhall Road, on the same line, to be closed to passengers. The goods facilities at Beeston Castle & Tarporley closed the following year and the last services ran on Sunday 17th April 1966, with the station closed completely on Monday 18th April 1966.
