Club scores with inspired deal TATTENHALL Cricket Club have unveiled a new electronic scoreboard. The club’s latest enhancements have been made possible following a three-year sponsorship deal with Inspired Villages, developers of a new 151 apartment luxury retirement village at Frog Lane in Tattenhall. Alex Sandland, chairman of Tattenhall Cricket Club, said: “Through the support of Inspired Villages, we’re delighted to upgrade the scoreboard facility and to bring a junior cricket tournament to our grounds for the very first time. The timing of this coincides with an exciting summer ahead, starting with the Cheshire vs. Wiltshire fixture. This is the first time such a game has been awarded to Tattenhall and a fantastic opportunity to showcase our unique rural setting and excellent facilities.” The club are also hosting the Tattenhall Junior Cricket Festival for u9 and u11 age groups. There will be eight teams in each six a side softball game and over 120 junior cricketers from Cheshire clubs will be involved. The tournament will be publicised on the cricket club’s website. Phase One of Inspired Tattenhall will launch later this year with 48 luxurious apartments. Inspired Villages provides many types of accommodation for the over 65s and prices for a two-bed apartment in phase one range from £299,000 to £516,000.

and use all the FELLING, PRUNING & space inGRINDING your home STUMP ETC We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER
Best Kept Village Competition In June’s Tarporley Talk, we provided information about this year’s entry into the Best Kept Village (large village) category of the Community Pride competition organised by Cheshire Community Action. In preparation for the judging, which will take place throughout the summer months, public spaces and planted areas around the village, have recently been reviewed and maintenance completed. The standard is very high and the competition is fierce but if everyone does their bit then we can regain this prestigious award in 2016. The village needs to ‘look its best’ all summer long. What can you do? Home owners and residents: Keep the area around your home well-tended and presentable, neat and tidy, free from weeds and litter and report to the Parish Council Clerk or Cheshire West and Chester Council anything that needs to be fixed or that needs attention. If you have a dog, then do not let it foul any public areas. Don’t drop litter and chewing gum. Shops, Businesses, Restaurants, Pubs, Hotels, etc: Keep the area around business neat and tidy, free from weeds and litter. Ensure that any notices in windows are up to date. Keep car parks, external areas and furniture tidy and well maintained. Attractive floral displays help. Report to the Parish Council Clerk or CWaC anything that needs to be fixed or needing attention. One of the key aspects which has been spoiling the village environment, is the amount of dog foul. There is a Cheshire West and Chester Borough wide bye-law making it an offence to fail to clear up after your dog on all public open spaces.
Parish Council Annual Report Over the next few weeks, every home in Tarporley will receive this year’s Parish Council annual report. The annual report is in a different format than previous years, and outlines the work of the Parish Council on behalf of Tarporley residents. Any feedback regarding the report, would be welcomed by the Parish Council Clerk.
Its carnival time! Tarporley Rotary Club are once again organising the annual Tarporley Carnival, to raise funds for local charities. The carnival will take place on Saturday 9th July 2016, starting at 12.30pm with a parade processing through the High Street into the Community Field for the Grand Opening at 1.25pm. This always an excellent event in Tarporley’s calendar. Thank you to the Rotary Club for decorating the High Street with Union Jacks in time for the Queen’s 90th Birthday weekend. Thanks also to Mr & Mrs Lee who have planted up the High Street planters on behalf of the Parish Council in red, white and blue.

Parish Council Meetings Second Monday of each month (except August) in the Committee Room of the Community Centre. Each meeting starts at 7 pm with an Open Forum, during which members of the public can address the whole Council on matters of concern to them. At 6.30 pm, prior to this meeting, the Parish Council holds a surgery where members of the public can talk to one to one with individual councillors on an informal basis.
Anti-social behaviour
It is unfortunate to have to report that certain public space are not being respected within the village, including the grave yard and Community Centre Car Park and playing field. It would be helpful if villagers could look out for any vandalism or antisocial behaviour and report any issues to the Police on the 101 number.
Roadwork improvements
As the village expands, the infrastructure needs developing. There are significant roadwork improvement works being undertaken along Nantwich road and the junction with the A49, which will continue until mid August 2016. The works will include new traffic lights on the Nantwich Road/A49 junction, various traffic and pedestrian islands and resurfacing. The result will be a safer access from Nantwich Road onto the A49, particularly for school buses. Further information about the different phases can be found on the Tarporley Parish website.

The next meeting is on Wednesday 29th June at 7.30 pm in the Edna Rose room at Tarvin Community Centre when Susan Debarro will talk about “My Quilting Journey”. Visitors welcome.

Utkinton & Cotebrook Parish Council By the time you read this newsletter the EU Referendum will be done and dusted and we can settle back into a semblance or normality. Much has gone on in the parish over the month of June – we are beginning to see new white lines appearing on our roads and one large road scheme has been completed – Fishers Green in Utkinton. But the PC would ask you all to use the CWaC ‘Report a highways fault’ page on their website. We have been busy with the ‘Housing Needs Survey’ and this caused a ripple of consternation when residents looked at the ‘Personal Income Page’ – in hindsight we should have left this page out and only asked people who are looking to ‘Affordable Housing’ to complete it at a later date – our apologies. As I write (and with 10 days to go) we have got 10% of them back and the results are very interesting. The survey will help us to define the way in which our parish is developed in years to come and to really understand your needs and wants. The playground project has been stalled once again as it was discussed in outline at the Diocese of Chester’s ‘Housing and Glebe Committee’ and has moved to a meeting with Bishop Peter Forster on 22nd June. The project has the support of our MP, Antoinette Sandbach, our Councillor, Eveleigh Moore-Dutton, the School, the PTA and a large number of parents but if you wish to have a say please do so on our website’s ‘Comments and Feedback’ page. The defibrillator, kindly donated by the Grants, is well under way and we hope to have it installed at Rose Farm Shop in the near future. Hopefully the weather will have been kind to the Utkinton and Willington Garden Fete (25th June) but we will include reports in the next Issue.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. Alex will return to the Himalayas AlEX Staniforth has announced details of his latest expedition. The Kelsall adventurer was twice denied the chance to reach the summit of Everest after an avalanche in 2014 and the Nepal earthquake last year. Now the 21-year-old will be jetting back to the Himalayas in late August in an attempt to climb Cho Oyu, in Tibet. At 8,201m (26,906ft) this monster is the 6th highest in the world. Alex said: “This will be my third expedition on an 8,000m peak. When I’ve seen Cho Oyu from the Gokyo side, it has always grabbed my attention and drawn me in. So, I will be joining an expedition team led by Rolfe Oostra, departing on the 28th August and returning on 14th October.” Alex added: “Not summiting Everest has given me new perspective, self-discovery, adventure and a vehicle for positive change, like raising over £35k for the Nepal earthquake victims. “Although I haven’t summited Everest yet, I continue to overcome adversity, pursue a goal, and use this to inspire others… thanks to their help I can continue spreading that message. “It gives me the best possible chance of getting into the death zone, and the future value of this experience is beyond anything else. But do I need to explain myself? It fulfils a spiritual need for adventure, challenge and living life to my best potential.”

Why put up with your window & door problems?.. …when we offer low cost window, door and conservatory repairs WindowGeeks is a local window & door repair expert. The company name says it all. But us 'Geeks' don't just fix windows, we are called out to mend problem front doors, patio doors and conservatories too. And with many homeowners battling with the extremes of good old british weather, we find our low-cost services are in high demand throughout the year. “Replacing misted-up or broken double glazed units and glass is only a small part of what we do,” says Ian, who runs WindowGeeks in the Chester & Wirral area. “We are often called out to fix a fair amount of draughty & leaking windows, helping our customers keep the warmth they're paying for inside. And, with the weather playing havoc with hardware, we’re kept busy fixing
lots of jammed or faulty window & door locks, hinges & handles too” “So, don’t just accept from anyone else that you need a brand new entire door or window” Ian adds, “as we can probably repair your existing problem for far less. And, in the rare event that we can’t fix it for you, then we can also give you a competitive price on a top quality replacement, so remember to call us first” Saving money gets most people's attention; whether it's helping to reduce energy bills or providing a simple repair that saves thousands over new double gazing. “But”, says Ian, “it's the company's reputation that makes us stand out, and it’s why most of our new customers are introduced to us through referrals”.
“This is my business, and it's one that's based on trust,” he says. “We will only charge you for what actually needs doing, and we always deliver on our promises. That's good old-fashioned customer service – nothing more – but it spreads fast through word-of-mouth.” We don’t employ salesmen and we provide free quotations with: • No call out charges, No minimum order values, No credit card charges • No deposits, 10 year manafacturer’s guarantee on all Glazed products • All quotes include VAT and Fitting, With NO HIDDEN EXTRAS

Battle to keep Bunbury’s Home Fires burning
THERE has been a big backlash from loyal fans since ITV announced it would be axing the WW2 drama Home Fires. The drama is based in Cheshire and mainly filmed in Bunbury. The online petition has now reached nearly 25,000 signatures and pots of jam have been sent to ITV in protest. Articles written in support have appeared in the Sunday Telegraph & the Sunday Express, while Vanessa Feltz and Anne Diamond and the Wright Stuff have all featured the campaign. The protesters are now lobbying potential channels/networks who may be able to take on the drama. A blog has been written on the subject by Serendipity Kitty, who says: “We care about the characters and we care about the show. The thought of leaving them in suspended animation without their stories being told upsets me. The cast and crew are brilliant and 40 To advertise call 01244 350398
there was easily a couple more series left in the programme. It is even one of the nominations in this year’s recently announced TV Choice awards. It doesn’t make sense. “It’s like ITV have invited us to a brilliant party. We’ve had the canapes, we may have had a cheeky cocktail or two. Now we are ready to gear it up a bit and get into the swing. And then some killjoy turns on the lights, brusquely shouts “Time’s up, off you go!” and starts sweeping around your feet whilst you are still looking bewildered with a deflated party blower sticking out of your mouth and a halfeaten sausage roll in your hand. It’s rude. “Despite numerous tweets, letters, emails, jars of jam and even media exposure, ITV have still not come out with any other excuse than “We need to refresh our portfolio”. The Twitter campaign can be followed at #savehomefires and Kerryn Groves can be contacted via Twitter at @monkeykezza

The benefits of outdoor group training By Daniel Jones BSc, Instinct Wellness 1. Support –. Surrounding yourself with other people who have similar goals will provide you with the support system you need to succeed. 2. Fresh air - Working out in the fresh air helps you finish your workout feeling energized. 3. Variety – A well designed group training programme means that your workouts will change and evolve as you progress. This will prevent you from hitting a plateau or getting bored. 4. Camaraderie – Sharing the workout enhances your experience and builds a “we’re in this together” mentality! Having both a coach and other participants there helps you to get through the challenges of the workout. 5. Motivation – When you’ve got someone exercising beside you, you will push that little bit harder than you might do on your own.
6. Increased Vitamin D Levels - Working out with the sun on your back will naturally boost your vitamin D levels which are so important for health and wellbeing. 7. Greater focus – There’s no time to let your mind wander with a coach keeping you to a programme and watching your every move. 8. Fun – Yes, you can exercise and have fun. The right exercise programme done with friends can definitely be fun. 9. Accountability – It’s too easy to skip a workout if you only have yourself to answer to. When you have a coach and a group of other people that you don’t want to let down, you will be far less likely to find an excuse not to exercise. This leads to... 10. Results – When you stick with a well constructed program, combined with the right nutrition guidance you will get the results.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Dry skin from air travel By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing
Q. Why are long plane journeys so bad for skin and what can I do about it? A. The main problem with air travel is the low humidity. Combine this with recycled air, chemicals, poor circulation from sitting and fluctuating temperatures and your skin is not happy! The pressurised environment is an unnatural one and draws moisture from your skin, and reapplying moisturiser is often not enough. Keep a small spray toner in your hand bag and spritz your face before applying your moisturiser to lock in hydration. Your lips in particular suffer on long flights so we recommend Dermalogica Climate Control Lip Balm, as it is created for temperature extremes. It’s also multi-purpose so you can use it on cheekbones, cuticles - in fact anywhere where you are prone to dehydration. For more information about how you can look after your skin visit Sensoria for a free Face mapping service when you quote Tarporley Talk. Q. Help! I have unwanted hair. What can I do? A.Finding the correct solution for you will require an in-depth consultation including which area the unwanted hair is in. Most clients opt for a more permanent method of hair removal such as electrolysis or IPL (intense pulsed light). IPL is quicker for larger areas of dark hair and electrolysis is ideal for smaller areas and for hairs that have little or no colour. Both solutions require a treatment plan for good success, and as most people want a successful outcome so are happy to attend for regular treatment. There are a variety of permanent and semi-permanent options for safe and effective hair removal. Visit www.sensoriabeauty. co.uk to find out about the treatments available.

TARPORLEY HIGH SCHOOL & SIXTH FORM COLLEGE
Diplomacy is the best policy Sarah Sterne has been selected onto The Young Diplomats Forum weekend in London this July. The Tarporley High School pupil was selected from a number of applicants after local MP Antoinette Sandbach wrote to all the Secondary Schools in her constituency to highlight the available opportunity. The forum is an intensive week long programme which looks at the role of diplomacy in the UK, Europe and Commonwealth as well as digital diplomacy. The MP said: “I am delighted that Sarah was selected to attend, there is a very substantial agenda which will be of huge benefit to Sarah and her fellow students when she shares these experiences. I always pass on these opportunities as I want our young people locally to have every opportunity to expand their world view and to have the chance to gain unique insights into foreign policy matters.” Sarah has also recently been elected by Cheshire schools to be one of their two members of the Youth Parliament representing the North West which gives an opportunity for students to engage with local MPs to raise matters of concern for younger people and to give them greater prominence in policy debates. l Sarah is pictured with MP Antoinette Sandbach and other students and staff at Tarporley.
Talented musicians take to the stage Many talented musicians from local primary schools impressed staff and parents alike when Tarporley High School hosted its new event ‘Tarporley’s Got Talent. Head of music Mike Monument said: “It was a delight to be able to host this event. The standard was impressive and the applause was loud and long. I am looking forward to working with all of the talented musicians when they come to Tarporley High School in September.” The winners were: Andre Adams 1st (Saxophonist, Huxley), Isaac Grover 2nd (Guitarist, Kelsall) and Natasha Lawson 3rd (Gymnast, Delamere). 54 To advertise call 01244 350398

Bright ideas for life after retirement BRIGHTLIFE, the organisation set up to tackle loneliness amongst older people in Cheshire West and Chester, is launching a competition to make over £250,000 available to local people and community groups. The Bright Ideas Competition welcomes individuals and community organisations from across the region to pitch their ideas for projects and activities that could help to reduce the risk of social isolation in over-50s. Successful applicants will win a share of the £250,000 award money to turn their ideas into reality. “The Bright Ideas competition is a great way of making funding accessible to community-minded people and smaller organisations that might not apply through traditional routes,” says Commissioning Manager Adele Gatley, who is working in consultation with Brightlife’s Older People’s Alliance. “We are encouraging applications from any source, regardless of size, and working closely with Chester Voluntary Action to provide tailored packages of business support to applicants, giving them the best possible chance of securing funding for their ideas.” The Bright Ideas competition will be run over four rounds, with each round open for applications for nine weeks. Brightlife is holding a series of free information workshops for anyone interested in applying to the competition, held in various locations throughout Cheshire West and Chester during June and July. For more information about these workshops, call 01606 884444 or email commissioning@brightlifecheshire.org.uk.

Fine food and song for twinners on French trip A group of ‘twinners’ from Tarporley and surrounding villages travelled to Brittany over the early May Bank Holiday, staying in the homes of friends in Bohars. They had a busy time and highlights of the trip included a spectacular cabaret evening ‘Breizh Paradise’ and a trip to nearby Brest by tram to see the ‘Printemps des Sonneurs’ spring folk music festival in the city streets. Some of the group visited the very unusual “Enclos Paroissial’ churches of Lampaul-Guimiliau, Guimiliau and SaintThegonnec. On the Friday night the group attended a choral concert in the village hall Roz Valan given by the choir ‘Churs en Cavale’ from Brest and the choir ‘Aux Quatre Vents’ from Bohars, over 100 singers in all, to raise money for research into Multiple Sclerosis.
Food naturally played a big part in the weekend, including an informal bring-andshare lunch on Saturday, again at the village hall, and finishing off on Sunday evening in the local crêperie ‘Le Kerouak’. The Tarporley group took over the entire restaurant with orders of savoury galettes and sweet crepes for 30 people. After recovering from all that they are now preparing for the young visitors from Bohars to Tarporley in late August. If you would like to get involved and host a youngster (ages 12 to 16) in August then please get in touch via the website www. tarporleytwinning.org.uk or phone David Dunning on 01829 781426. From top: Traditional Breton costumes at the folk music festival in Brest, overlooking the harbour. A typical scene in the centre of Bohars. The bring-and-share lunch. Choir Concert at Roz Valan.

Sixteen Cheshire Fire Cadets and nine volunteer leaders will head out in the autumn of 2017 but first they need to raise over £70,000. This will fund the building of a new school and enable the team to go to Nepal and finish off the build where they will also meet and work with the children and villagers who will be using the facilities for generations to come. A year on from the first earthquake in Nepal, children are still living and studying under tarpaulins, so it’s important that the cadets raise the money to enable them. The trip to Nepal will take Hannah out of her comfort zone and into a place where she will need to push herself, trekking on foot through the Himalayas before getting to work on the school. Hannah will be running lots of independent fundraisers over the coming months to hopefully raise sponsorship cash. For more info please visit the Classroom in the Clouds website www.classroomsintheclouds. org. Hannah recently took part in the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service Lecturette competition coming 3rd.

Short mat bowling at Tattenhall The Barbour Institute has now acquired two Short Mat Bowling sets, with bowls, which could be used by any clubs, groups or individuals and private parties. We shall soon be arranging a session where people can come and have a go and see what the game involves. It could even be possible to create a club who may like to play against other villages for example. Due to short mat bowls being played indoors it can be an all year round game. If the game is of interest to you in whatever capacity then please call Hilary on 01829 770516 to discuss further.

A sweet fundraising effort As part of the 2016 celebrations to mark 100 years of Cub Scouts, the two Cub packs in Tarporley recently set out to raise as much money as they could by filling 100 Smarties tubes with 20p pieces. Having eaten the Smarties in the tube they began filling their empty tubes with coins earned for giving things up during Lent, or volunteering for chores and tasks to help their friends and family. 68 To advertise call 01244 350398

by Tarporley Cubs The money raised was donated to Tarporley War Memorial Hospital by some of the Cubs who took part. Penny Watson, Akela of the Wednesday pack, said: “We raised a fantastic total of £421 across both packs. The Cubs felt they wanted to support this worthwhile local cause, as most had either used the hospital themselves or knew somebody in their family who had.”

Vicki with some of the bags of clothes collected by Tarvin Slimming World members.
Tarvin slimmers lose lbs and raise £s for cancer charity TARVIN Slimming World group have collected 60 bags of clothes they’ve successfully slimmed out of to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Vicki Page, who runs Tarvin Slimming World, encouraged members, their friends and families in Tarvin to spring-clean their wardrobes and collect the clothes, shoes and accessories they’ve successfully slimmed out of to generate valuable stock for the Chester Cancer Research UK shop. The groups, which meets every Wednesday at Tarvin Community Centre have lost a stunning 300st since January this year, were taking part in the organisation’s national fundraising campaign, the ‘Big Slimming World Clothes Throw’. Last year Slimming World’s Big Clothes Throw raised £1.7m for Cancer Research UK,

and this year the organisation aims to raise £2m for the charity. With each bag worth up to £25, Vicki hopes the contribution from the Tarvin groups will help to reach that total. She says: “The incredible members of my group have amazed me with their enthusiasm, dedication and commitment once again! This year’s Big Clothes Throw has been a fantastic success, and I can’t believe just how many bags my members, their friends and families have managed to collect for Cancer Research UK. It’s been so rewarding and I’m so proud to help pull together such a phenomenal amount of stock for such a worthwhile cause! “Knowing they’ll never need their ‘before’ clothes again, when I told my group about the campaign they couldn’t wait to take part. Not only is the Clothes Throw a perfect opportunity for all of us to celebrate our slimming success, it is also vital we spread the message that keeping a healthy weight could reduce the risk of developing ten different types of cancer. This is why Slimming World chose Cancer Research UK as our national charity partner. We really hope our bag collection will help to increase understanding of how weight affects cancer risk.”

WHY ARE THERE DELAYS IN THE DISCHARGE OF ELDERLY PATIENTS? AFTER having hospital treatment, many older expect support from their local authority or community health services so that they can be rehabilitated back into living in their own home. The National Audit Office said that bed-blocking, which occurs when patients are medically fit to leave, is still a major problem. Care is not being organised enough to help people return home as soon as possible. They said: “The number of delayed transfers has been increasing at an alarming rate and there are far too many older people in hospital that do not need to be there. Obviously this is bad for their health and apparently, costs the NHS an unnecessary £820 million a year! This is staggering. The authors of the latest report estimate that around 85 per cent of delayed transfers of care are of patients aged 65 or older, most of which could return to their own homes if the had the right support. As always the Department of Health says that elderly patients should never be stuck in hospital unnecessarily. They are determined to make health and social care more integrated but local authorities have now had nearly ten years of guidance from them to prevent
unsafe discharge which is still not working, causing misery and distress for patients, families and carers. Yet again, what can be done? It is all rather dispiriting, as it would seem that the authorities have their hands tied behind their backs due to budget constraints. It would seem that the only solution is to pay for your own care through the private sector. Obviously this is not always possible for families but leaving them in hospital, often means they will deteriorate rather than recover. There is a great danger in them becoming institutionalised, and hospital staff really do not have the time to give them the attention they really need. This is not their fault but shows how the system is creaking at the seams. Here at Bunbury we do everything we can, not only to get people back in their own homes as quickly as possible, buty try to keep the costs to a minimum. You will be surprised how cost effective our service is and how you get real value for your money.

FOOTBALL TALK...
TARPORLEY VICS FC
Vics stay up after longest ever season TARPORLEY Vics 1st Team finally completed their season on 23rd May, and the disjointed season proved to be the longest in Cheshire League history. The wet weather during this spring led to Cup cancellations and postponements and also the inability to build any form or fitness. With this in mind the squad managed to claim enough points to remain in Division One of the Cheshire League, of the 20 games played only four victories were achieved, and five draws and 11 defeats made up the remainder of the results. The 2016/2017 season however should provide a new challenge as the Cheshire League is expanding again with Division One & Two growing to 16 Teams in each Division, to match the Premier Division, thus allowing more opportunities to compete for points. One team joining the 2nd Division is local Team Deva Christleton FC, it’s always nice to see another local Team in what is mainly a Central / East Cheshire/ Manchester League. Tarporley Vics Reserves had an excellent end to the Season, and the development of the young players alongside the more experienced regulars delivered 9 wins & 3 draws from their 20 League games. This resulted in a sixth place League finish; an excellent starting point to build on for next season. Tarporley Vics FC would also like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors, especially Wichtig Publishing Ltd & the Forrester’s Arms, for the generous support they have given us during 2015/2016. We would also like to offer the opportunity for any new sponsors to add their name to the list of supporters, without whom our small wholly amateur Club would not function Please contact Mike, Andy, Sean, Clive, Adam or Matt or any other Tarporley Vics members for any other Tarporley Vics info. We are always looking for help, new players and sponsorship therefore any support is appreciated (Mike can be contacted on 07793905269)

Pensions may be dull, but they are an awful lot more fun than an impoverished retirement! According to William Shakespeare, there are seven ages of man, and unless you have been on another planet for the past few months, you will be aware that he died on the 3rd May 1616 at what was probably then considered to be the ripe old age of 52! In his seven ages of man poem, the first stage of the infant “mewling and puking in the nurses arms” I can accept that annuity rates, tax free lump sums and flexible option drawdown, won’t figure too highly on the agenda, but I’m still surprised by the fact that for many people, the imminent approach of a 50th birthday is the catalyst to think about their financial wellbeing (or lack of it) in retirement. Prior to this we’ve had the Primary School pocket money stage, the teenage “I need a tenner mum”, the twenty something trying to get on the housing ladder or paying off student debt, in your thirties paying for childcare, taking a breather in your forties and thinking about your pension at 50. Of course by 60 and over we have the “I wish I’d saved more money” period! In the Bard’s days, this would be well and truly shutting the gate after the horse has bolted, after all, he died at 52 when the average life expectancy was around 35 years of age. If you’ve got to 50 without any form of retirement planning, the good news is that you’ve got another 17 years to work before your state pension comes to fruition! I say this tongue in cheek because much like arriving at the airport for your annual holiday without a passport, you’ve missed the chance of arriving at your planned destination if you had any thought at all of an earlier retirement. There’s no harm in starting to build up a retirement pot at 50, indeed something is better than nothing, but it’s considerably cheaper if you begin in your first half century rather than your second. Planning a financially comfortable retirement, can take many guises these days, and the pension liberation rules have made contributing to a pension far more attractive than it once was, from an accessibility point of view. I was lucky enough to have a final salary pension scheme with my old
employer, but since becoming self employed a number of years ago, I initially chose to utilise my annual ISA allowances rather than make a pension contribution because of, what I personally felt were inflexible options after a relatively short period of input. This all changed in April 2015 and I now make annual lump sum contributions to a pension plan, which has the effect of reducing the amount of corporation tax I pay (taxation rules can of course change in the future and depend upon an individuals circumstances). Over the years, I’ve heard lots of people tell me that their home is their retirement pot. They plan to downsize to release equity, which they will then use to supplement their insufficient pension arrangements. This may sound like a reasonable plan, and I guess if you are living in a mini mansion you just might rattle around like a couple of peas when the children have flown the nest. The reality tends to be that just when you’ve got your house to yourselves, with more opportunity to spend time in it, the last thing you actually want to do is to move out. Then of course you will want to keep those spare bedrooms for when the children come back to visit, and in time bring their own children with them.
”
The moral of the story then is that it’s never too early to start your pension, and the seventh age of man is likely to be an awful lot longer than in Will Shakespeare’s days! If you would like to discuss your retirement plans, or indeed any aspect of financial planning, do give us a call on 10948 840738 or 05797928907 to arrange a meeting, without obligation. The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of any funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested.

WHAT’S ON IN YOUR VILLAGE JULY West Cheshire Rural U3A Join us for the next meeting on Thursday 21st July at the Barbour Institute when Theresa Hull will talk about her recent local history project “Burwardsley Remembers”. Refreshments will be available from 2pm. For further information on membership and forthcoming events please contact either Hilary Scarratt 01829 770516 Hilary@Scarratt. com or Jean Hancox. jean.hancox1922@ btinternet.com Bunbury WI The group meets every second Thursday in the month. At our June meeting the speaker was Tracy Longdon who spoke about Feng Shui. It was an interesting and thought provoking talk and the ladies all learnt something new. Our speaker in July will be Sue Hardacre and her talk will be ‘Fiji - the way the world should be’. New members are very welcome to join us or just come along as a guest. Meetings are held in The Pavilion and start at 7.30pm,
Peckforton and Beeston WI Our annual garden party took place on 1st June at Rose Leigh in Bunbury and although the weather was not too warm it stayed dry and the sun peeped through during the afternoon. The garden was looking beautiful, full of colour provided by many azaleas, rhododendrons and other various flowers and shrubs and we were able to wander along the paths and enjoy the surroundings after the excellent lunch in a real ‘garden party’ atmosphere. We are grateful to Alison Atkins for her generosity in hosting this event. Our next hall meetings are on 3rd August (the Secrets of Handwriting) and 7th September (Red Poll Tales) and we would welcome any visitors who would care to join us at Peckforton Village Hall at 7.30pm. Margaret Ellis, 01829 261898.
Tarporley WI We are on the hunt for this year’s Pudding Queen! Last year Sue Wall dazzled us with her delicious Sticky Toffee Pudding – who will be the winner this year? We will be having a secret tasting of ten desserts, with a glass of Pimms or fruit punch, followed by a foodie quiz. Come and join in the fun on Wednesday 6th July, 7:30 for 8pm in the Done Room behind St Helen’s Parish Church on the High Street. Bring a friend; your first meeting is free! £5 for non-members. Please email TarporleyWI@hotmail.com or phone Sarah on 01829 733 813 for details and encouragement, and find us on Facebook: Tarporley Women’s Institute. A warm welcome awaits you.
