Girls dance out of their comfort zone The Year 10 GCSE dance group represented Tarporley High School in the Cheshire Schools Dance Performance at the Lyceum Theatre in Crewe. Their performance involved a fusion of contemporary, modern and commercial dance. Mrs Roberts-Williams said: “I’m extremely proud of their disciplined, exciting performance which took each of the girls out of their comfort zone, as they rose to the challenge of performing more complex group choreography. The staff at the Lyceum commented on their conduct and commended them on their performance skills.”

and use all the FELLING, PRUNING & space inGRINDING your home STUMP ETC We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER Neighbourhood Plan Referendum
A big THANK YOU to everyone who came out and voted in the Referendum on May 5th, that’s 1,083 of you, 45.9% of the registered voters, and more importantly 96% of you voted “yes” to the question: “Do you want Cheshire West and Chester Council to use the Neighbourhood Plan for the Tarporley area to help it decide planning applications in the neighbourhood area?” Our turnout and % voting “yes” far outweighed the other 4 areas that were voting for their Plans on the same day. It’s taken 4 years to get to this point with lots of hard work from the members of the Neighbourhood Plan working groups but we have a Plan, based on the views of local people. Now the policies in the Plan will form the basis for making decisions on planning applications and the community can finally see their views being given greater weight in the developments that affect them the most. Thank you to everyone who has helped create the Plan and to the community for providing their views at key stages during its development.
The Best Kept Village Competition 2016 Tarporley is once again entered in the Best Kept Village (large village) category of the Community Pride competition organised by Cheshire Community Action. Until the last couple of years, Tarporley has had an excellent record of winning this competition, as you can see from the number of plagues that are mounted by the seats at the entrance to St Helen’s Church on the High Street. So this year we want to make a special effort to redeem our reputation, after coming joint 4th last year, with Kelsall winning. Judging is based on random inspections between May and September with the final score being based on the later inspections. The Parish Council will take care of areas such as public toilets, seats & benches, children’s playground, public space planted areas, war memorial, notice board and we will chase CWaC Council to look after items under their responsibility. Assistance Needed Residents: Please keep the area around your home well-tended and presentable, neat and tidy, free from weeds, litter and report to the Parish Council Clerk or CWaC anything that needs to be fixed or that needs attention. If you have a dog, then do not let it foul any public areas. Don’t drop litter and chewing gum. Shops, Businesses, Restaurants, Pubs, Hotels, etc: Please keep the area around premises neat and tidy, free from weeds and litter. Ensure that any notices in windows are up to date. Keep car parks, external areas and furniture tidy and well maintained. Attractive floral displays help. Report to the Parish Council Clerk or CWaC anything that needs to be fixed or needing attention. We know the standard is very high and the competition fierce but if everyone does their bit then we can regain this prestigious award in 2016. Thank you for your assistance. 12 To advertise call 01244 350398

Each meeting starts at 7 pm with an Open Forum, during which members of the public can address the whole Council on matters of concern to them. Defibrillator
If you are wondering what the bright yellow box is on the wall outside the Community Centre (on the wall by the Committee Room window on the raised car park), we are pleased to announce that it is a defibrillator, put there for volunteers to use in the event of someone having a cardiac arrest. This area is lit by an overhead light and full instructions are available for use by anyone on the cabinet. Training will be organised soon for the Community Centre users and parish councillors. Utkinton & Cotebrook Parish Council For the first time the Parish is combining with Willington to stage the Annual Garden Fete at Tirley Garth. With The Rose Queen procession and ceremony, football tournament, stalls, prize draws, refreshments, there’s something for all the family! Go to their Facebook page (Utkinton & Willington Summer Fete) for details. Both Parish Councils and Village Hall Committees are involved alongside the PTA. Utkinton WI provide the catering for the football teams as well as organising afternoon teas – they could do with volunteers to staff car parks, stalls and help with the sporting activities. At the time of writing the Planning Application to build on Northgate field has had 31 objections from residents in Utkinton and the Parish Council have placed a formal objection on file too. The ‘Green Space Action Group’ posted leaflets through every household and we now have to wait for the Planning Team to put forward their views. The Parish Council voted unanimously to object to his application. The last newsletter saw us put 28 highways issues in front of CWaC’s Highways Team and we have begun to see some action on them – please continue to report any issues on their website. In terms of litter around the parish there is a new free ‘app’ (IOS and Android) called ‘Littergram’ that you can download to your mobile phone and take pictures of litter around the area, it will then be posted to the local authority. Let’s help to stamp out litterbugs. Two parishioners, Judith and Michael Morgan, are donating a defibrillator unit to be located next to the notice board outside Rose Farm Shop but we need to raise £700 for the cabinet to house it securely. If you believe that you are able to help with sponsorship and/or donations (as little as £1.00 but as much as you can afford) please get in touch via the Feedback section of our web pages. We had a very interesting presentation by Ashton Hayes PC on the merits and challenges faced by a village going ‘Carbon Neutral’ which has resulted, so far, in very significant savings of money as well as carbon for residents. Those interested in community energy please contact Ian Priestner, Parish Councillor, through the website.’ ‘The PC is reviewing the status and condition of our ‘Rights of Way’. Please let us know your views on footpaths in the Parish, particularly their condition underfoot, presence of livestock and state of the stiles and paths themselves. We are also currently talking to landowners about a prospective link for walkers and cyclists between Tarporley and Utkinton. £2.5m funding bonanza for school buildings TARPORLEY High School has been granted £2.5million of government funding to revitalise the buildings. The school submitted two ambitious bids to make extensive improvements which include replacing most of the roofs on the school buildings and replacing all of the existing external walling, windows and ceilings, and providing a new fully efficient ventilation and lighting system for one of the school’s main teaching blocks The project will start this term and is scheduled to be completed by the end of December. The scheme will transform the school site and provide significant improvements to the learning environment for all. Head teacher Sarah Lee said: “This is the largest capital investment that the school has received since the mid-1970s and is very exciting for staff, students and governors. The scheduled works have been planned in such a way that lessons will be able to continue as normal so we anticipate that any disruption will be minimal.”

LOCAL MP Antoinette Sandbach says it is so important for superfast broadband to be rolled out to rural areas. With only four per cent of farmers having access to superfast broadband, the roll-out of complete mobile networks and affordable reliable superfast broadband to rural areas must now be prioritised by government, according to an NFU report. Ms Sandbach said: “Since becoming an MP improving our connectivity has been a top priority and I have taken every opportunity to champion this cause. Rural or urban, superfast broadband is crucially important to individuals and businesses alike and I will continue to do all that I can to get the standard that we deserve.”

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Tarporley, Tattenhall, Kelsall, Tarvin &
Bunbury areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

The benefits of outdoor group training By Daniel Jones BSc, Instinct Wellness 1. Support –. Surrounding yourself with other people who have similar goals will provide you with the support system you need to succeed. 2. Fresh air - Working out in the fresh air helps you finish your workout feeling energized. 3. Variety – A well designed group training programme means that your workouts will change and evolve as you progress. This will prevent you from hitting a plateau or getting bored. 4. Camaraderie – Sharing the workout enhances your experience and builds a “we’re in this together” mentality! Having both a coach and other participants there helps you to get through the challenges of the workout. 5. Motivation – When you’ve got someone exercising beside you, you will push that little bit harder than you might do on your own.
6. Increased Vitamin D Levels - Working out with the sun on your back will naturally boost your vitamin D levels which are so important for health and wellbeing. 7. Greater focus – There’s no time to let your mind wander with a coach keeping you to a programme and watching your every move. 8. Fun – Yes, you can exercise and have fun. The right exercise programme done with friends can definitely be fun. 9. Accountability – It’s too easy to skip a workout if you only have yourself to answer to. When you have a coach and a group of other people that you don’t want to let down, you will be far less likely to find an excuse not to exercise. This leads to... 10. Results – When you stick with a well constructed program, combined with the right nutrition guidance you will get the results.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Uneven skin tone By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing
Q. I have a very uneven skin tone and brown patches. What are the causes and what can I do about it? A. An uneven skin tone, or hyperpigmentation, is due to the over production of the pigment in the skin called ‘melanin’. This pigment is what gives the skin its col-our, provides protection from sun damage and also absorbs heat from the sun. Did you know that for melanin to be produced you need to have enough copper, tyrosine, phenylalanine, riboflavin, pyridoxine and vitamin B? You can find out more about the causes of uneven skin tone on the blog page of www. sensoriabeauty.co.uk As for treatment, the most important thing you can do is to wear a sunscreen product all the time. There are a variety of salon treatments with varying degrees of effectiveness and dependent on its cause. For an in-depth treatment recom-mendation attend for a Face-Mapping appointment. Q. It’s my prom night this month. What are your top tips? A. Over the years we have done lots of prom night treatments and makeups. My top 3 tips are as follows: 1. Keep it simple. Sometimes less is more! 2. Prepare your skin. Makeup hides a multitude of sins but nothing beats good skin prep. 3. Get a professional to do your tan. Badly applied tan never suits anyone!

Mind your language! Melike Uzum, Jemima Dodwell-Cooke and Issy Barker, travelled to Manchester Metropolitan University to compete in the North West Regional Final of the Routes into Languages Spelling Bee 2015. Due to the sheer number of students taking part in the competition from schools right across the North West, all competitors were divided into groups of around 30 students upon arrival for the first round, to determine the top four spellers that would then move on to the second round to compete for a place in the national final. During this first round, the Year Seven trio had one minute to accurately say and spell out as many French or Spanish words as they could in target language and from memory. 54 To advertise call 01244 350398

before, serious consideration must be given now to how you will fund these fees without eroding your family’s legacy.
The guidelines state that anyone with assets over a threshold of £23,250 have to make a contribution towards their care fees, if not fund them altogether. As the average family home is now valued at £200,251 (Nationwide House Price Index, March 2016) any homeowner applying for state assistance with Long Term Care fees will almost certainly be refused. And with more of us needing Long Term Care as a result of living longer than ever
You may think you can avoid the problem by giving away your assets now and escaping the attention of your Local Authority in the future. However, under current rules, this would need to be done with caution as your Local Authority may have the power to include any gifted assets in their assessment, as if they had never been given away. The harsh reality therefore could be that you are still expected to pay for care, even though you no longer have the assets to cover these costs. This could mean a reliance on state provision, which would naturally reduce your

Tarporley karters take the chequered flag in the Lakes It was a successful day in the Lakes for Tarporley Karting Team. The latest National Schools Karting event took place at the Rowrah Race Circuit in Cumbria over the weekend of 16/17th April. In Class 1 Cadet, where the youngest drivers compete, TKT fielded two entrants and from a field of six Harvey Cole was just pipped at the post, finishing 2nd just a point behind the winner. Although our other driver in this class, Daniel Kenny, finished last he continues to improve and is building his confidence race by race. In Class 7 TKM, where competitors compete in Karts with 100cc engines, all 6 TKT drivers finished in the top 10. Well done to Lee Whittingham who came 1st, closely followed by James Mills in 2nd, Kurt Roberts in 3rd, Theo Hesketh in 4th, Reece Griffiths in 5th and Amy Duke in 8th. Reece also picked up the Class 7 (158kg) trophy on the day. In Class 14 (Modified TKM & Raket) TKT fielded 4 of the 8 entrants, and it was another 1st place for Sam Bailey-Saltmarsh, with Jon Daniels in 2nd, Katie Pritchard in 4th and Kian Ray in 7th place. Finally in Class 15 Rotax, TKT fielded 3 drivers in a field of 10 entrants, congratulations to Tom Taylor who came 3rd, Connor Bailey who was 4th and to novice entrant Jake Bailey-Saltmarsh who was 9th. If anyone reading this is interested in finding out more about TKT or Natska and Schools Karting in general please contact Howard Malyon on 07887 626 320, or come along to a TKT club meeting at Tarporley High School (Wednesday evenings from 7-9 pm during School term time). You can also find information about Natska online and about TKT via our Facebook page. 72 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.tarporleytalk.com

First Responders provide vital training I SUSPECT that most of us wouldn’t have a clue about what to do if we were with someone who collapsed with a suspected heart attack or cardiac arrest, writes John Roberts. It’s vital to act quickly as after a cardiac arrest, every minute without CPR (CardioPulmonary Resuscitation) and defibrillation reduces someone’s chance of survival by 10%, according to the British Heart Foundation. In order to address a perceived need for training among the residents of Tarporley, courses concentrating specifically on CPR and the deployment of defibrillators (AEDs*) were organized by members of the Aquarobics group at the Macdonald Portal Hotel which kindly hosted the events. Around 30 persons in total attended the two courses which were led by a trio of First Responder volunteers: Jeremy Mills (Tarporley), Rob Selby (Tattenhall) and Mark Burton (Malpas). After watching training videos and taking instruction from the First Responders, the trainees quickly learned the basics of applied CPR followed by the use and application of demonstrator AEDs. The correct use of an AED can save lives by providing an electric shock through the chest to stop the heart and hopefully allow it to return to normal rhythm when an arrest has occurred. The AED provides audible automated instructions for a person using the device which ensures correct use and safety. Said one trainee, “The course was interesting, fun and instructive. I now have the confidence to help someone if it happens near me in real-life”. Currently, there are two functional AEDs in Tarporley: one in the Swan Hotel, the other 74 To advertise call 01244 350398
in the High School. Recently, the Community Centre has taken delivery of a third one which has just been commissioned. According to Chris Cooke, Manager of the Leisure Club at the Macdonald Portal Hotel, his head office has assigned two new AEDs to the hotel, one for the Leisure Club the other for the Golf Club, which are soon to be delivered and installed. After the courses, the newlyenthused trainees were keen to extend their knowledge of Basic Life Support through additional complementary sessions. Should demand for this training remain high, the First Responder volunteers have kindly agreed to provide further sessions. Details of forthcoming courses will be circulated and more information can be supplied by Jeremy Mills at j.mills11@btinternet.com *AED - An automated external defibrillator l Top: Betty Paton with “Resusci Anne” l Newly installed AED cabinet at Tarporley’s Community Centre

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
EARLY SUMMER B
Y June, the garden is at its peak with new foliage, many flowering perennials and shrubs.
For those with well drained soil, flowers like Alliums are popping up fleetingly. The large heads of Allium aflatunense Purple Sensation will grow to about 75cm tall. A sun loving shrub is Cistus purpureus Alan Fradd which has semi evergreen leaves and lovely pure white flowers with red blotches at the base of each petal. Growing to about 1m in height and width it is a good shrub for summer. Those with heavier damp soil, have a look out for Aruncus. This is a large perennial growing to 1m in width and has tall spires of feathery Astilbe like cream flowers. It will grow in any heavy wet soil in sun or light shade. If you have average soil, neither well drained nor heavy clay then a lovely easy shrub for early summer are Weigelas. They grow in any situation in sheltered or exposed positions and provide many pink or red flowers in early summer. If the shrub becomes too large, cut back after flowering to ensure new growth for next year as it flowers on wood from the previous year. Maintenance jobs to do in the garden in June include pruning Cherry trees. However as the trees are in leaf it is more difficult than pruning a tree in winter as the shape is difficult to see. It is best not to do this in winter as cuts can develop canker. Prune any shrubs that have just finished flowering. Plant seeds or summer salads and vegetables that mature fast, like lettuce, radishes and carrots. If you have grown leeks or broccoli from seed, plant them into their final positions in June or early July. l If you would like to visit gardens for ideas, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. 150 Barrel Well Hill in Chester is open on 25th and 26th June with a superb terraced garden overlooking the river Dee with a stream running through the bog garden and huge variety of flowering plants. The Old Cottage at Frodsham is open on 4th and 5th June with a large organic, wildlife friendly garden with herbaceous borders and pond. ARE WE COMPROMISING THE SAFETY OF OUR ELDERLY PEOPLE? This month’s worrying news highlighted that many NHS patients are being sent home from hospital with little support arranged in advance, the consequences of which often leads to people being re-admitted in a very short space of time. The report showed that some of our most vulnerable elderly people are enduring harrowing ordeals when they leave hospital. Poor planning, co-ordination and communication between hospital staff and social care services it would seem, is increasingly failing patients and compromising their safety and dignity. There are some horrific stories of people who are unable to care for themselves being sent home alone with no food or drink in the house or even bedding, let alone anyone to help them.
their own homes rather than in a hospital - but this must be done with the right help and support in place.”
What can be done?
Once again it seems to boil down to funding. Or is that really the case? One would have thought that good communication does not cost much and should be possible between departments. The Bunbury Agency often liaises with Social Services, hospitals and of course the families, ensuring that no one comes home from hospital without the care and support they need. It is not rocket science. It just takes a few phone calls. If you have a relative or a friend who may be in this situation please call us immediately. We have a reputation of finding you a carer within 24 hours if not on the same day and can communicate with all parties on your behalf.
What does the Nice (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) say?
“Rather than frail elderly people staying in hospital longer than they need to, it is better to get patients home as quickly as possible and to assess them in

Be inspired by gardening! A TASTE of luxury retirement came to Okells Garden Centre, as two celebrity gardeners offered tips and advice for green-fingered retirees. The BBC’s Joe Swift and Former Head Gardener of Tatton Park Sam Youd entertained guests with a series of presentations at the garden centre. Their aim was to bring the audience a taste of daily life at Inspired Villages, a new 151-apartment retirement development in Tattenhall. Joe and Sam shared a number of tips throughout the day, gleaned from their lifetimes spent in the garden. Their top tips for older gardeners included: - Get the balance correct – don’t be a slave to the garden. - Search out interesting plants that you can learn about and talk about - Minimise maintenance by allowing grass to grow longer, introduce containers and choose plants which require reduced watering. - Immerse yourself in the hobby – get stuck in and 80 To advertise call 01244 350398
visit your local garden centre for advice - Keep a good notebook and diary - Above all – enjoy it! James Cobb, sales and marketing director for Inspired Villages, said: “Sam and Joe have offered some excellent gardening tips at Okells and in doing so, they’ve demonstrated the kind of exciting activities we will be offering frequently to our residents in Tattenhall. “If there’s one thing we’re keen to convey, it’s that gardening doesn’t have to be a chore. Our new Cheshire village will allow residents to get involved with gardening as much or as little as they like. Throughout the year, it will be looked after by our team of expert gardeners who will plant and maintain the grounds.” Inspired Villages is developing a new, luxurious retirement village in Tattenhall that will offer a life less ordinary for the over-65s. In phase one, apartment prices at Inspired Villages in Tattenhall range from £259,000 to £558,000.

WHAT’S ON IN YOUR VILLAGE JUNE Tiverton District Garden Club Tuesday 7th June at 7.30pm, Tiverton Village Hall, Huxley Lane, just off A49 (park in laybys). Mrs Sue Makin is coming to tell us about “The pitfalls of creating a wildlife garden”, a subject that is dear to the hearts of most gardeners, and guaranteed to be informative and enjoyable. The talk will be followed by a Plant Sale, so if you have any spare seedlings, plants or other garden-related items, please bring them along. Proceeds will go to the Club to help fund good quality speakers at our meetings, so don’t forget your wallet! Entry £1.50 (members), £3 (visitors). Including raffle and refreshments. All are welcome. Tattenhall Gardening Society The popular annual garden coach tour this year is on Thursday 23rd June, visiting Wirral gardens. We take in Ness Gardens (with guided tour), Briarfield and Fieldcrest. (both open under the National Garden Scheme see www.ngs.org.uk). The coach will leave Tattenhall High street 9.00am and returning approx. 6.00pm. Tickets are £28.00, available from Nettle Florist in Tattenhall. Bring packed lunch or eat at Ness café. Tarporley and District U3A The monthly meeting previously scheduled for 23rd June has changed due to national EU referendum and will now be on Thursday 30th June. Meeting at Tarporley Community Centre. Doors open at 10am. Speaker starts at 10:30am and it usually ends by 12noon. Speaker: Clare Pye on “The Civil War in Cheshire”
Peckforton and Beeston WI The speaker for our May meeting was Ruth Court who spoke eloquently of her time in Iraq from 1976 to 1979 and showed us some of the photographs that she had taken. Her experiences were both interesting and occasionally humorous. The country was extremely hot and dusty with no proper air conditioning and obviously western women were seldom seen there at that time. We are looking forward to our ‘Musical Afternooon’ in the Pavilion on 10th June in aid of Tarporley Hospital and our Garden Party, also in June. Our next hall meeting will be on 3rd August when we will learn the secrets of handwriting, do come and join us. Margaret Ellis 01829261898 Tarporley WI Please join us on Wednesday 1st June, when Rob Selby of First Responders will teach us some ‘Crucial First Aid’. Have you ever considered how to act if somebody chokes? How do we treat somebody who has fallen or been scalded before emergency services can take over? Many of us look after children or grandchildren, and quick actions can save a life! What should you do if somebody collapses? How would we recognise and respond effectively to the symptoms of a heart attack or stroke? This talk could be life changing! We meet in the Done Room behind St. Helen’s Parish Church. Doors open at 7:30, followed by regular business with our president Abbie, and we will welcome Rob from 8pm, so please come along if you can make it by 8pm! Bring a friend; your first meeting is free! £5 for nonmembers.
