HOME CARE - v - CARE HOME

There is much debate as to whether care in the home is more expensive than moving into a care home. My philosophy has always been to provide the best possible home care service to our clients at the most cost effective price. I want you to stay living in your own home.

Residential Care v Live in Care

Home Care financial facts… Live in Care £620 per week for a single person £660 per week for a couple Respite Care £100 per 24 hours Maximum 3 days Agency fees 25% of the carers wage + vat

Daily Care £12 per hour weekdays £15 per hour weekends Minimum 1 hour Overnight or Waking Night Care £100 - £140 per night Travel 45 pence per mile

Whilst I do understand that some people may be happier in the environment of a residential home, it can cost an average of £960 per week for a single person and double for a couple. This may mean you have to sell your house and no longer keep all your belongings and pets. Instead you could have that extra pair of hands and one to one attention at all times, so you can continue living the way you have always done, in your own home. Nothing could be better than that, in my opinion!

Daily Care Our daily carers also have a special role. They will give you a minimum of a full hour of their attention. You will always have the same people at the time you need them, giving you and your family peace of mind and a service you can trust and rely upon.

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL Newsletter

Village Projects As a resident of Tarporley, we are sure that many of you wonder why it takes so long to get things done. As a member of the Parish Council, we share your frustration that it does seem to take an inordinate amount of time to get sometimes what appear to be simple matters completed quickly. Sadly having past copies of the Parish Council entries to Tarporley Talk; improving the surface of the Lychgate Lane and the replacement of the benches and noticeboards were both noted and planned this time last year and only now these items have finally been completed. The Parish Council are planning and pushing to complete a number of village improvement projects this year and we already feel we will need more time to drive these forward as unfortunately the reality is that these often get relegated due to having to resolve other more pressing issues. Developers continue to circle the village for opportunities and existing building projects continue to require an increasingly high level of time and scrutiny just to ensure that they remain in line with what was originally promised.

Parking - more or better parking and congestion improvement - both remain a very high priority for the council yet this time last year, it was noted that CWaC are about to implement time limited parking in the High Street during the month of July, July 2017 that is. And then there is GDPR – the new General Data Protection Regulations which requires all organisations, including the Parish Council, to manage the data that they hold about anyone and comes into force on the 25th May 2018. For your information, when you contact the parish council, any personal information that is provided (such as name, address, email address, phone number, organisation) will only be held to enable us to contact and respond to the recipient. That personal information will be not shared or provided to any

other third party. This year we are very fortunate to have the Tarporley Remembers team pioneering a number of activities and projects in the village around which we should be able to focus a number of projects, many of which will improve the village and perhaps inspire more community spirit and involvement. A working group has been set up to rethink the approach to the Christmas event in the village to make better use of the resources and facilities available which could even involve moving the event closer to the church but with the road closed. However, this year we had to decline to compete in the Best Kept Village competition because we did not feel that the village was close to the requisite standard required and because in reality, we did not have the time to fully support it. The reality is that there are only 12 parish councillors, a number of whom have full time jobs, supported by two part time clerks and a limited budget to work within. To do more, we would need your support in giving some time to help the Parish Council and Tarporley Remembers make a real difference to the village this year. Please contact Abigail or Delia if you would like to get involved with community projects at clerk@tarporley.org.uk

Parish Council Meetings Second Monday of each month (except August) in the Craven Room (the downstairs room accessed from the rear car park) of the Community Centre. Each meeting starts at 7pm with an Open Forum, during which members of the public can address the whole Council on matters of concern to them. At 6.30pm, prior to this meeting, the Parish Council holds a surgery where members of the public can talk one to one with individual councillors on an informal basis.

Community Event On Saturday 12th May, the Parish Council held a community event in the form of a market place and local clubs and organisations where invited to raise awareness and share information with the local community. Tarporley Hospital, Tarporley Primary School, Older People Active Lives (OPAL) and and Tarporley Amateur Dramatics attended the event along with many more groups. Cheshire West and Chester Recycling team also attended and gave local residents useful tips and tricks on how to recycle more effectively and how to reduce food waste through the use of ‘left over’ recipes. The Parish Council would like to say a big thank to all the organisations that came along to the event. Sadly, the event was not as well attended as last year (possibly the nice weather kept people away) but the event did provide a good opportunity for local groups to network with each other and look at ways of working together in the future.

HEALTH & BEAUTY By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing

Too old for acne? By Angela Bartlett, Owner Sensoria Beauty Q. I am 35 and it looks like I have acne. Am I too old for acne? A. Unfortunately, you are never to old for acne. In fact, the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology states that 54% of women over the age of 25 are affected by adult acne. Adult acne can be deeper, more uncomfortable and more difficult to treat. It can also be a lot more distressing as you get older as you feel you should have outgrown acne in your 30’s and upwards. Look for skin care products with ingredients which treat the inflammation associatedwith acne without drying out the skin. For more information about adult acne and how to properly treat it visit the blog page at www.sensoriabeauty.co.uk Q. I am considering having electrolysis for permanent hair removal on my face. How should I prepare for my first treatment? A. Your first treatment will involve a full consultation, so be prepared to disclose any medical conditions you have or any medications that you are taking as well as how long you have had the unwanted hair for and the the methods you have been using to date to remove the hair. If you have been plucking, waxing or shaving the hair it is a good idea to let it grow for at least for a few days so your electrologist can better assess the hair growth pattern. The initial treatment is usually fairly short to determine how you and your skin respond to treatment, so be prepared for all the hair you have present not to be removed in one go. For the full article and our product recommendations please visit the blog page of our website at www.sensoriabeauty.co.uk

GARDENING BY JANET WEEDS

Blooms for June T

here are many beautiful perennials flowering in June and it is difficult to choose which ones to have in the garden.

I would love to have delphiniums but the slugs get them in my heavy soil. However, if you can keep the slugs off, they can pop up each year with tall spires of rich blue, pink or white flowers. In autumn many will flower again if you cut the dead flowering spikes off in summer. Another reliable perennial for damper soils are the magnificent Rodgersias with their large Horse Chestnut shaped leaves and tall robust stems with white or red flowers. I saw them at Dunham Massey garden last year growing with huge Alliums. Alliums will flower each year and are often teamed with roses. Will thrive in heavier well drained soils and are especially good in drier borders. Shrubs can form the backbone of a border so why not indulge in a Deutzia. A small on Deutzia Gracilis has little white flowers or Rosealind a taller shrub to 1m with rich pink clusters of flowers. They will grow in sun or lights shade and any soil provided it is not dry. For a larger shrub or small tree one of my favourites are the Sambucus or Elderflower with the purple or golden foliage. Sambucus Black Beauty likes a damp heavy soil and has pink flowerheads in early summer. Make Elderflower cordial with the flowers and it will be pink! Roses are centre stage in June so make sure you feed them well with a proprietary rose feed, spray with soapy water to remove an excess of whitefly and keep dead heading them. Work to be done in the garden includes trimming Privet and Box hedging. Prune any shrubs that have finished flowering. Keep climbing roses and clematis tied in and under control. Keep removing any side shoots from tomatoes. Thin apples, apricots and plums where there are many fruitlets on stems to one or two. Continue planting radishes, small carrots and lettuces for succession. If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. 150 Barrel Well Hill, Boughton, Chester is open on 23rd and 24th June. A terraced garden with informal cottage garden planting and some unusual plants. Natural springs with a stream lined with bog loving plants. Burton Village Gardens are open on 23rd June with three gardens open, Briarfield, Burton Manor Walled Garden and Trustwood, ranging from more formal to informal gardens with a wide range of plants and wild life habitats.

Administrators seek buyer for Tattenhall bike business

Arrest follows suspected stabbing

Administrators have been brought in at a Tattenhall bike premises. Global Adventure Sport has appointed Manchester firm Mazars to oversee the administration. It is being reported that the firm’s creditors are hoping for a sale of property and assets in order to settle up matters but the administrators hope to sell the company as a going concern. The company stopped trading earlier this year but still kept its cycle-selling website - globalbike.co.uk - alive and selling to customers from its unit at Canalside. The administrators say that Globalbike says 60 per cent of its sales are through the “mature online presence”. The firm was established in 2009, selling cycles, accessories and parts and one of the UK’s largest dealers of several specialist brands, including Ghost Bikes, Lapierre and Nukeproof. It started as a family-run business started up by James Cooper, a mechanic, and his relatives.

POLICE have made an arrest after a 36-year-old man was seriously injured in Barrow on Sunday 7th May. When officers arrived at the address on Irons Lane they found that the man had suffered multiple puncture wounds. He was taken to Aintree University Hospital, where he is currently in a stable condition. A 28-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder; he has since been sectioned under section 2 of the Mental Health Act. Det Sgt Simon Owen said: “I would like to reassure the local community that this is believed to be an isolated incident.”

Police 0ffer DNA kits to tackle thefts in Tattenhall and Beeston POLICE are trying to tackle rural crime by offering a high-tech solution to homes and businesses. They are rolling out the Shield scheme to 1,200 homes in Tattenhall and Beeston. It uses a forensic liquid containing a DNA code unique to each property and can be used to mark belong-ings, so it can be returned to the owner regardless of where it is recovered. Shield is now availa-ble to 6,000 properties in rural areas of West Cheshire. To mark the roll out and raise awareness of the scheme an event took place at the Barbour Institute in Tattenhall, attended by Chief Inspector Mike Evans and local Crime Commissioner David Keane. PC Gerard Gigg, who has led the roll-out, said: “Shield demonstrates that the Constabulary is continuing to tackle rural crime in all its forms, sending out a clear message that Cheshire will not be a soft touch for criminals. “Crime in the rural communities surrounding Chester is low and we are committed to doing all that we can to keep it that way.” Commissioner Keane said: “The work undertaken by PC Gigg and his team is exceptional and I have no doubt that the scheme will make a real difference. Their enthusiasm has been outstanding, and this kind of proactive policing is so vital to our rural communities. “Preventing and tackling rural crime is one of my key priorities as Commissioner and I would encourage residents who have benefited from the work of Operation Shield to complete our Rural Crime Survey, which we will be launching shortly, to enable us to measure the progress of this fantastic initiative.” PC Gigg, supported by local PCSOs and Community Safety wardens, have distributed almost 1,200 Shield DNA kits to homes and farms across the Tattenhall and Beeston. As well as distributing property marking kits, the visits to local homes were also a great oppor-tunity to directly engage with local residents and listen to their concerns and priorities. PC Gigg concluded: “I would like to acknowledge the continued support received from Chief Inspector Mike Evans and Inspector Barry Brown. “Thanks to their ongoing commitment we’ve been able to build stronger relationships with our rural residents; while also making the communities more resilient communities and less attractive to those who want to cause harm.” To find out more about the Shield initiative, including how it works and how to join, visit the Cheshire Police website.

hen the Queen turned 90 on 21 April, she served as a very public reminder of how much longer, as a society, we are living. In her own family, four generations are now all alive at the same time, from the Queen herself down to her latest great grandchild, Princess Charlotte. An increasing number of families now find themselves in the same position, which has implications for financial planning. As a nonagenarian, Her Majesty is far from alone. The number of people over 90 years old rose by a third between 2002 and 2012, according to a report published by the Office for National Statistics in 20151. It also says that the number of over-85s in the UK is likely to more than double by 2039, to 3.4 million; longevity and the multi-generational family are here to stay2. Another key phenomenon that is changing is how we manage our wealth against the backdrop of a growing generational wealth gap. The economy was kind to those born in the years immediately after the Second World

War, and in the 1950s, but less so to those born in the 1980s and 1990s – the so-called ‘millennial generation’ – who are finding it harder to get jobs and to get onto the property ladder. It means many parents are having to support their children financially well into their adult lives. While our children are struggling with their finances, our parents are living longer. This has led to an increase in the need for long-term care, which is likely to be financed from accumulated savings, selling the family home or with support from younger generations. This changing dynamic has raised the prospect of a renewed social contrast between the generations – the idea that we collectively support each other through the stages of our lives, and do so fairly. Thus, the prospect of transferring assets from one generation to the other, often within our own lifetimes, is becoming much more common. St. James’s Place provides a range of familyorientated financial products and services, enabling families to work collaboratively to support each

Bunbury pub is open for business The newly refurbished Yew Tree in Bunbury opened its doors with a taster evening recently. After acquiring the lease for The Yew Tree in March 2018, Chester Race Company have invested into refreshing the country pub. Work on the 19th century free house has been undertaken to freshen up the pub to create a homely feel. Keeping the main rooms, traditional with a modern twist. The garden room was created using rattan and driftwood, using a Barney Gates wallcovering, giving a lighter feel. Inside the main pub, intimate dining areas have been created with cool linen upholstery and a dramatic antler chandelier. Bunbury local and Head Chef, Craig Wainwright and his team have been hard at work over the past few months designing a wholesome menu that will entice locals and visitors from further afield. Available from the bar, there will be a selection of nibbles and sharing boards to devour, including a garlic and thyme spiked camembert with Haughton honey pot and sourdough toast to share, the perfect taster for a warm spring evening. Featured on the menu and already a favourite within the team is the Yew Tree signature pudding. Buttery, soft pastry casing is filled with slow cooked ox cheek and kidney, served simply with greens and triple cooked chips. For those looking for a lighter bite to eat, the delicate spring salad is top of the list and goes perfectly with a crisp glass of Riesling Pinot Blanc. Piled high, with baby carrots, fine beans, fresh watercress, confit tomatoes, candied beets, pea emulsion and a walnut dressing. On the pudding menu, the sticky toffee pudding is not to be missed, served with a dollop of Clotton Dairy clotted cream, lashings of butterscotch sauce and a caramelised banana.

Irene turned her life around – can she do the same for you? Irene Remelie is passing on her tips for achieving success in life. The 40-year-old, who lives in Tarporley with her husband Dan and two children, is a self-made success story having achieved all her personal life goals. Despite working hard from a young age, the youngest of six children, she was never overly qualified yet secured her own radio show, became a TV presenter, a public speaker and owns an international business which helped her create the life she wanted. Irene has recently become a best-selling author. ‘Time to wake up – your life is calling’ made it to number 1 in her category on Amazon. Her next step is to inspire others. Irene will now be running online training courses, day courses and one to one guidance. She’s also in contact with local schools with a view to inspiring children. Most of this followed after a near death experience which in Irene’s words she called her ‘wake up call’. Not long before her accident Irene had spiralled into a desperate situation and had almost lost the will to live, frustrated with life, going around in circles and heading into a marriage breakdown. After the incident because she had broken both of her knees, ribs she was literally house bound for a year. She couldn’t do much but what she did do was take steps to evaluate her life and take drastic action to make it better. In that time Irene read many books and researched all ways in which she could improve her life by mind-set. As a result she then went on to get a prime time breakfast show, own her property, get rid of all debts, win a car on The Price is Right but most importantly live a life she loves. Irene said: “Most often people only truly contemplate where their life is heading when faced with a situation they think they have no control over. For me, nearly losing my life made me start living it to full capacity instead of just plodding along and accepting what is. I now believe no matter where you’re at, anyone can achieve whatever they put their mind to. In a society where more and more people seem to be suffering from depression I want to help people see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel”

Retirement village is praised in report A luxury later living village in Tattenhall has been praised in a national report on housing for older people. The Rural Housing for an Ageing Population: Preserving Independence (HAPPI) Inquiry commended Inspired Villages’ Gifford Lea development for its efforts in helping residents to live independently. The report said of Gifford Lea: “The professional on-site care team is able to deliver bespoke care and support and adapt to residents’ changing needs to enable them to live independently.” James Cobb, sales and marketing director at Inspired Villages, was pleased Gifford Lea had played a part in the inquiry. He said: “Being retired doesn’t have to mean a loss of independence far from it. “The level of care we offer is completely tailored to the individual. For the majority, we provide no care at all, and they’re simply comforted by the knowledge that it’s available should they ever require it. For others, care may be as little as a bit of help putting shopping away or half an hour of support in the morning.” Gifford Lea is a development of retirement apartments, neighbouring the traditional country estate of Bolesworth. It is run by Inspired Villages, an operator and developer of later living accommodation. The Bolesworth Estate was involved in the creation of the retirement village, which will also include 20 affordable homes for people over 65.

Just imagine feeling spoilt for choice. You deserve a little luxury in later life. And it shouldn’t cost the earth either… Gifford Lea is located in the picturesque village of Tattenhall, with views across the beautiful Cheshire countryside and offers a choice of stunning homes from £247,000 to £525,000, with your very own wellness spa, bistro-café, landscaped gardens, bowling green, village concierge and maintenance team, plus care and support as and when you need it. This is more than luxurious. This is Inspired.

Local hospice volunteer signs up to cycling challenge Fundraisers and cyclists are preparing for this year’s Liverpool Nightrider on 14th/15th July and the Hospice of the Good Shepherd is appealing for more people to sign up and get involved. The hospice has five charity places available and is looking for people to sign up and register their place. Hospice Volunteer, Mandy Duncan, from Tarvin, has already registered her place and is looking forward to the challenge. Amanda said: “As a keen cyclist, Liverpool Nightrider was a great way for me to raise sponsorship for the Hospice and take part in a challenge I know that I will enjoy. I help out in the fundraising department and have seen how much the Hospice relies on voluntary donations and fundraising to provide services to patients, free of charge.” Liverpool Nightrider is the only way to explore the city’s iconic landmarks and legendary musical heritage sites by bike. Whether you’re a well-seasoned cyclist, or your new to the Lycra, with a choice of 50km (31 miles) or 100km (62 miles) route there is a challenge to suit you. This is not a timed ride and it’s not a sportive but it is all about having a good time and cycling together. Step up to this epic challenge with hundreds of fellow cyclists to help make a difference to local people with a life limiting illness In addition to this, the Hospice are looking to recruit cyclists who have successfully sourced themselves a place and would like to support by raising sponsorship. Hospice donor development co-ordinator, Alison Dunbar said: “It’s always exciting to hear from all the people wanting to take part in sponsorship events to help support our patients. The Liverpool Nightrider is a really popular cycling challenge and we would love to hear from anyone who would like to sign up or already have their own place.” For more information on how to register for a place please contact Alison on 01244 851 811 or email Alison.dunbar@hospicegs.com or book your tickets online at www. hospiceofthegoodshepherd.com

What’s on in your village JUNE CLUBS AND SOCIETIES Tarporley U3A The next meeting will be on 28th June in the Tarporley Community Centre. Doors open at 10am, refreshments until 10.30am, speaker starts following notices at 10.30am, usually ends by 12noon. Speaker coming from the Riding for the Disabled. West Cheshire Rural U3A Come and join us for the AGM at 2pm on Thursday 21st June at the Barbour Institute in Tattenhall. After the AGM Carole Codd will talk about her experiences as a Registrar. Refreshments will be available. For further information on membership and forthcoming events please contact either Hilary Scarratt 01829 770516 Hilary@Scarratt.com or visit our website u3asites.org.uk/west-cheshire Peckforton and Beeston WI At our May meeting Susan Ord, who is an expert in handwriting and document examination, demonstrated how forging documents and signatures can be exposed by someone like her. Using certain markers like the position of text on the page, the pressure used, together with the shape, slant and size of letters and numbers Susan is able to give an opinion on whether a document is likely to be a forgery or not. The talk was extremely interesting and also amusing when she performed a ‘test’ on our members to prove her point. Our Garden Party will be on 6th June at Stoneyford Cottage Gardens, and our outing to The Gladstone Library and nearby church will follow on 4th July. Our next hall meeting is on 1st August when the speaker will be Ian Black talking about ‘The History of Hairdressing’. Kelsall WI We had Dr Simon Dowell the Science Director of Chester Zoo to talk to us on conservation at our April meeting. A really interesting and informative evening. Members will be busy in June entering the Royal Cheshire Show, having a talk on Iceland and celebrating their 85th birthday. In July members will be learning how Parliament works. Meetings are held in the Methodist Church school room at 7.30 pm on the 1st Wednesday of the month. Visitors are always welcome. Call 01829 759310 or visit our website www.kelsallwi.org.uk Tarporley WI Please join us on Wednesday 6th June when we welcome back Gina Haig who will be giving us a demonstration of Cake Decorating.
