BEAUTY SPOT BATTLE BICKERTON HILL is a well-known beauty spot which is suddenly the focus of a dispute between locals and the National Trust after the woodland was stripped to make the hill look like a treeless Bronze Age site. A public meeting has been called this month for people to have their say. You can read more in this edition. Elsewhere, you can find out about Kelsall’s Alex Staniforth who is preparing to embark on his long-awaited Everest attempt later this month.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Tarporley, Tattenhall, Kelsall, Tarvin &
Bunbury areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER
Large planning applications – back on the agenda 100 houses at land off Rode St No. 14/00841/OUT This planning application was refused by our local Council CWaC during 2014, but the applicant has appealed to the Planning Inspector against this decision and a public enquiry is to be held at CWaC’s offices at Wyvern House, Winsford. The enquiry starts on March 3rd, and may last up to 4 days. Both the Parish Council and the Tarporley Neighbourhood Planning Group will speak at the enquiry supporting the refusal of this planning application. Any member of the public is free to attend and ask to speak.
45 houses at Arderne Home Farm off Eaton Road No. 15/00111/OUT The Parish Council are seeking residents views about this application at a meeting on Monday 2nd March at 7.00 – 8.30 pm at the Community Centre. Currently members of the Parish Council have raised a series of objections to this application to the developer, Bloor Homes, but want to hear what members of the village think.
Leisure Land Off Brook Road
Community Centre Car Park
Discussions about how this land might be used as a leisure and outdoor sports area for the village have begun. The Parish Council invite everyone to the Community Centre on Saturday 21st March from 10am-2pm to hear your views and see what’s possible within the space. Currently ideas expressed in the 2008 Parish Plan and the current Draft Neighbourhood Plan have been taken into consideration. However you may have some different ideas. Please come along.
The Parish Council are pleased to support the Centre’s Management Committee in their hard work to improve this car park and to increase the number of marked bays where people are permitted to park.
Royal British Legion Club Since the closure of the Club House at the end of December there has been increased concern about the future of the Club House itself, the allotments and the Bowling Club. All these amenities are greatly valued by the village and the Parish Council continues its investigations and hopes to establish dialogue with Royal British Legion Head Office to strive for the best possible outcomes in the interests of Tarporley, as well as Royal British Legion “beneficiaries”. However the public car park behind the Club is still open. Please continue to park there.
Currently people are parking in unmarked areas and receiving parking tickets from CWaC. Relining the car park will mean that 18 new spaces are created but this means the recycling bins are removed. First however repairs to the car park surface are needed and this is scheduled to be undertaken 13-17 April, during which time the car park will be closed. In order to improve road safety, the Committee are also working with the Council to widen the entrance drive and increase with width of the dropped kerb into the car park from High Street. The Committee have sought funding from the Parish Council and CWaC towards this work. Now that the Royal British Legion building has closed the Community Centre is in even more demand which has increased the use of this car park.

Award-winning mine host Martin ‘returns home’ Award winning restaurateur, Martin Cocking reflects on his ‘return home’ as he revels in the thought of taking charge at the recently refurbished Royal Oak Hotel and Restaurant in Kelsall.
‘
My wife and I left Tattenhall in 2013 having won several awards with Mitchells Wine Bar and Brasserie that included ‘Les Routier Wine Bar of the Year’ in 2011. Sunny North Wales saw us at the helm of The Hayloft Restaurant at Bodnant and we were happy to settle in one of the most beautiful parts of the world. Originally from North Wales, we first moved to Cheshire in 1990 when we took over the Golden Lion in Ashton. There we built up a great business, and won many awards in the ‘old Greenall Brewery days’. ‘The Lion’ became a busy and popular village pub, as well as attracting both locals and people from farther afield
on the strength of the range of traditional pub food that was on offer. It was a family business in every sense of the word; in 1990 whilst at the Lion our son Martin was born, and his brother and sister, Paul and Clair, did their bit to help as best a 6 year old and a 10 year old could!! Eventually we moved to the Fox and Barrel in Cotebrook. Again, we built up a great reputation for excellent food, quality ales and affordable wines. It was here that we achieved our greatest accolade when we won ‘Best Pub of the Year 2000’, a National award from the Morning Advertiser trade paper. Our good friend Eric O’Connor then approached us
Martin Cocking and when we saw the fantastic décor and the truly amazing rooms at The Royal Oak Hotel and Restaurant, combined with a great menu and Chef, suddenly the ‘coming home’ meant coming home to Cheshire and seeing faces old and new after an offer was made to join the team by Eric. Now we look forward to continuing the fabulous job that has already been done here, and seeing it grow from strength to strength, sending a warm welcome to all our old friends and customers alike to come and see us.

Kelsall housing development given the go-ahead Taylor Wimpey has been granted planning permission for the development of 89 homes in Flat Lane in Kelsall. It will include 31 affordable properties and public open space. Outline planning consent was granted back in November 2013 but the developers have now secured full detailed planning permission which should allow the project to move to the construction phase.
Work is continuing on the Bunbury Neighbourhood Plan with draft policies for Housing and Local Economy now on the website (www.bunburynpg.org), together with supporting information. Further draft policies covering Transport and Communication, Landscape and Environment, Community Infrastructure and Tourism, together with one for Open Countryside will follow shortly. There will soon be an additional round of consultation and we are planning a second public meeting to discuss the Draft Plan. Watch the web site, notice board and posters for details but in the meantime we will be happy to hear your views or answer any questions. Contact us at info@bunburynpg.org We want to know how you feel about the emerging plan so that it can truly reflect the views of the people who live and work in Bunbury. We are aiming to hold a referendum on the plan, in the summer, which is the last stage of the Neighbourhood Plan process and it is important that you take part in the consultation so that you can make an informed choice. Bolesworth Show announce line-up Indie band Scouting For Girls are to headline the Bolesworth International show at Tattenhall this summer. The popular band will be on stage on Saturday 20th June, playing their instantly recognisable hit singles like ‘She’s So Lovely’ and ‘It’s Not About You’ from their back catalogue as well as newer material. Look up....
and use all the space in your home
We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of
NEW
the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about
Here’s a great way to make more storage space...
£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. Worrying facts about paying for elderly care I mportant changes are planned for April 2016 to meet the growing demand for support.
It is planned that the cap of care costs will increase from £23,800 to £72,000. However this is not straight forward. The cap will not include the “hotel costs” in a care home i.e. the normal cost of daily living such as food, energy bills and the accommodation. Under these reforms, these so-called “hotel costs” will be set at £12,000 a year. For a typical place in a care home, that accounts for about 1/3 of the fees.
This means that an individual could find themselves paying over £100,000 over three years (£72,000 in care fees and £36,000 in hotel costs) before the cap kicks in. Once it does they will still be liable for the £12,000-a-year hotel costs until their wealth is whittled away.
There are other worries; once the cap kicks in you may not be able to stay in the care home of your choice or even the area.
Statistics say that the elderly live longer if cared for on a 1:1 basis at home. With proper care fee planning and the right care and support, I know that most people can do just that.
But…..
Accessing quality and specialist advice is crucial. The Society of Later Life Advisers was the first not for profit organisation to provide a framework of qualified and empathetic advisors throughout the country to ensure this advice is available and easily accessible to those who need it. They all have the ‘CF8’ long term care qualification which was introduced to avoid miss-selling. Most financial advisers and banks do not have
this specialist training. We are the first independent care provider to be made an affiliate member of Solla. Their first accredited consultant, Brian Blake lives in Bunbury and will provide free advice on the funding of elderly care. He works in conjunction with us to ensure that people plan their finances in the most cost effective way in order to remain living in their own homes for as long as possible.
Our live in care services start from £560 per week.
If you would like to discuss the many options available, or would like a consultation with Brian Blake, please contact us to make an appointment.

TARPORLEY HIGH SCHOOL & S
Nerves jangle at annual interviews
Year 11 students took part in the annual ‘mock’ interviews hosted by Tarporley Rotary club. There is always a “buzz” of excitement around school over these days as students experience what is, for the vast majority of them, their first ever formal interview. The students were highly praised for their punctuality, appearance and interview technique and 12 candidates were selected to receive prizes for their superb efforts. Students were presented with their awards, by Mr Mike Lloyd, Tarporley Rotary Club President, during a full year group assembly in January. Prize winners with Headteacher Ms Sarah Lee and Tarporley Rotary Club President, Mr M. Lloyd. From left to right: Sally Heath 11AW, Mark Latham 11KP, Meg Challoner 11PB, Danny Harrison 11AW, Oliver Robinson 11PB, Hanna Faulkner 11RG, Lawrence Brown 11JC, Sarah Stearne 11JC, James Burnett 11RG, Luci Hartwell 11KP, Chris Bright 11SW, Olivia Towers 11SW Students engage in writing workshop Year 9 students from Tarporley High School enjoyed a change to their regularly-scheduled English lessons with a visit from Mancunian writer and poet Mike Garry. The students were selected for a project funded by ‘ENGAGE in the Visual Arts’ and ‘The Max Reinhardt Charitable Trust’ which aims to help students ‘unlock’ an image to produce vivid and exciting creative writing. Working with the painting ‘Under Windsor Bridge’ by Adolphe Valette, the students’ journey began at Manchester Art Gallery with a trip just after Christmas, and culminated in two further school-based workshops with the writer himself. 34 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.tarporleytalk.com
Sixth Form College New piano gets a good run-out! The school celebrated the arrival of their new Grand Piano, by holding a short concert featuring the many talented pianists. The piano was bought thanks to the very kind and gratefully received donation from the Tarporley Schools Business Trust. Staff, students, governors, parents and carers enjoyed a fantastic evening with music by Rachmaninoff, Chopin as well as student compositions and pieces of popular music and Jazz. Performers from Years 8-13 took part, as well as the professional pianist Liam James Waddle.
Biology boffins explore the microverse
The school’s best Biology students took part in the Microverse Project, a research project between the Natural History Museum and 250 Schools across the UK. The Microverse aims to discover and better understand micro-organisms that survive in extreme urban environments. The project explores buildings as habitats where micro-organisms have little access to nutrients, experience both wet and dry conditions, and can be exposed to high levels of pollution The project involves collecting samples of microorganisms from the exterior walls of buildings and sending them to the Museum for DNA analysis. The DNA helps researchers to answer a wide range of research questions such as how does the material the building is made from affect the microorganisms present? The project has been an excellent opportunity for students at Tarporley to contribute to genuine scientific research, providing insights into the micro-ecology of urban environments including the school site.

Lucy tops the leaderboard The Chestnut Horse Feeds arena eventing series gathered momentum at Kelsall Hill, as the second of three events running on a points league attracted huge entries to this extremely popular venue in February. This fixture also hosted a British Eventing (BE) qualifying round that gave competitors a chance to earn points towards the BE Arena Eventing final. As the top 30 on the BE90 and BE100 categories will qualify for the BE championship to be held at Blenheim Palace, competition was keen throughout and a number of local riders also capitalised on additional wins and places to add more points to their totals on the leader board. Forging ahead in the BE90 section is Tarporley rider Lucy Hassall who clinched
a second win in this series riding Starlight Clara. The 14-year-old Tarporley High School pupil has produced her 14.2hh six-year-old from riding club level where Clara proved to be equally successful in working hunter and show jumping classes. Gillian Milner again set a very forward going course and she left plenty of options for sharp-eyed riders to save time, Lucy being one who pulled off some very tight turns. “She is the ultimate pony who loves to jump. She can go on long and short strides and pick up from any angle so we did all the short cuts, said Lucy who gained a substantial winning margin on the day and now leads the BE90 table by six points. All hands to the pump for record breaking beer festival The end of January saw the return of 9th Tarporley CE Primary School PTA Beer Festival at Tarporley Community Centre. This annual celebration of real ales, ciders and perry has become a popular highlight in the calendar. There was particular excitement in the air prior to the festival weekend as the PTA band The Warning Flower were playing on the Saturday evening. There was an updated bar with a state of the art, temperature controlled system with all 25 real ales available for the first time on hand pump. At the time of going to print, the total raised was an amazing £5,700 but the organisers hope this figure will top £7,000 once the final donations trickle in. A parent at the Primary School who helps tend the bar Michael George has kindly organised matched funding of £1000 through his employer Barclays Bank. In addition to the Primary School the beneficiaries of this year’s event are Tarporley War memorial Hospital and Tarporley Baptist Methodist Chapel Restoration Fund. The 10th anniversary festival in 2016 takes place on 30th and 31st January.

health & beauty with Angela Bartlett
Q. I’ve been looking to have IPL (intense pulsed light) treatment for hair removal, but I’ve noticed a big variance between treatment prices in different salons and clinics. Is all IPL equipment the same? A. There is a big difference in the type of equipment on the market and the efficacy of the treatments they provide and this will be reflected in the price. For an IPL hair removal treatment to be effective it needs to heat the hair up to a high enough temperature to disintegrate it. Failure to do this will extend the amount of treatments needed to clear the hair growth, and some may never clear it at all if the fluency (power) is too weak. It is interesting to note that there are not many IPL machines in the NHS supply chain. This is because there are many pieces of equipment on the market that over promise and under deliver on results and the NHS have very strict criteria for choosing effective, safe equipment.
Q. I’ve had two IPL (intense pulsed light) treatments on the age spots on the backs of my hands and they are still there. Should they have disappeared by now? A. The amount of treatments you will need will depend on a variety of factors which your practitioner should have discussed with you at the beginning of your treatment programme to manage your expectations. Occasionally, some age spots (pigmentation) will disappear with just one or two visits, however in the majority of cases three or sometimes more treatments are required especially if the age spots are widespread. Also, following your IPL course, you will need to apply a broad spectrum sun product to help prevent the spots from recurring, so aftercare is very important to enable you to get the full benefits from your treatment. In addition, as we mentioned in the answer above, intelligent selection of equipment and machine maintenance is essential for efficacy.

Swan rescued on frozen lake
Firefighters rescued a swan stuck in a frozen pond in Peckforton. The bird was 25ft out into the pond and was rescued by the Cheshire Animal Rescue Team after ensuring all members of the public were well clear. The swan was brought back to dry land and then taken by the RSPCA officer to Stapeley Grange RSPCA Centre in Nantwich.
Poppy Appeal in Tarporley raised over £7,000 Once again the Tarporley Branch of the Royal British Legion extends its thanks to the very generous people of Tarporley for their outstanding response to last November’s Poppy Appeal. The total raised was the magnificent sum of £7058.71. That such a significant total was raised is due to the hard work and dedication of Mrs Campbell -Smith who volunteered to be the Tarporley Poppy Appeal Organiser for 2015. The Branch Committee, on behalf of the Royal British Legion, offer her their most grateful thanks. Again the Tarporley Army Cadets rose to the occasion by collecting £850.00 in Tarporley High Street on the two Saturdays of the Appeal. Thanks are also due to those who braved the dark
and cold to raise £1252 from the House to House collection. The annual Remembrance fortnight during which the poppies are sold is the highlight of the Poppy Appeal year, but events are arranged, mostly by volunteers and those who have the aims and objectives the Royal British Legion at heart, all year round. Last year the sum collected during the Appeal fortnight was just over £39 million, but over the whole year the sum raised was £124.6 million. The 2015 November’s National Poppy Appeal is anticipated to have raised in excess of £40 million.

Tarporley teenager returning to Everest KELSALL adventurer Alex Staniforth is preparing to embark on his ultimate ambition – climbing Mount Everest. The 19-year-old is set to climb the 8850m peak in May. Alex was forced to cancel a previous attempt after a huge avalanche on Everest last year killed 16 Nepalese Sherpa guides and political strife brought the climbing season to an early end, the biggest tragedy in Everest history. His attempt this year is being backed by numerous corporate sponsors, including Tarporley-based Dayinsure, who have pledged to become a major sponsor for Alex’s second attempt. Alex, a young endurance athlete and motivational speaker, said: ‘’Thanks to their support I’m glad to confirm my expedition is now fully funded and I can now focus on training and charity fundraising before I leave on 28th March.’’ In addition to raising sponsorship to fund the ultimate goal, he has been fundraising for the Sherpa avalanche victims with his EPIC7 project.
The project involves seven ultra endurance challenges to test his limits before Everest. Some of these feats have iincluded cycling 880 miles from Chester to Chamonix unsupported in just eight days, the Fred Whitton Cycle sportive solo, hiking the Welsh 3000’s solo, climbing the highest peak in Switzerland and the National 3 Peaks Cycle challenge440 miles cycling unsupported and the three highest UK mountains in just four days. February saw him walking the 79 mile Great Glen Way in Scotland, in just 48 hours. Alex has overcome a number of childhood challenges - epilepsy, bullying, depression, stammering - and is ready to take on more to inspire other young people to discover their potential and find their Everest in life. Anyone who wishes to donate to Alex’s charity can visit www.justgiving.com/EPIC7 and visit his website www.alexstaniforth.com Pictured: Alex Staniforth and Steve Coppock, Managing Director of Dayinsure

Grange makes the grade again! The 2014 national school’s A Level performance tables produced by the Department for Education made great reading for The Grange School. The Grange Class of 2014’s results placed the school in 59th place of all schools nationally, making it 4th in the
whole of the North of England and top in Cheshire. The availability of national added value data this year helped to amplify this success story, showing just how well the school is able to get the best out of its pupils. Headmaster Chris Jeffery said: “It is always good to get affirmation of the standards that our young people reach in relation to their peers nationally and to know that The Grange continues so obviously to punch well above its weight as one the country’s very best schools. What is even more pleasing is have recognition of the value that the rounded education we provide is adding to the lives of individuals.”

no no idea howhow we find ourselves at the beginning of March, last the 12 months II’ve have idea we came to find ourselves at the start ofthe 2015, last year havepassed passedininaablur, blur, aa sentiment sentiment I’m all equally familiar familiar with! with! has I’msure sureyou’re you are From a personal point of view, I’m delighted to say that after sitting several external exams (I really am getting too old for this studying lark) I was awarded “Chartered Financial Planner” status by the Personal Finance Society in November 2014, a qualification which I hope will become more common place in the industry, but for now at least, sets me apart. From a financial planning point of view, it was quite a year, with totally unexpected announcements from the government regarding increased ISA funding allowances and the radical pension legislation changes, some already effective and some still to come. Throughout the year I’m sure I’ll be able to share some real life examples with you as to how all these changes have worked for my clients. This month though, I wanted to introduce you to Betty, a close friend of Alice and George who I introduced you to last summer. My office has been particularly busy this past year with clients wanting to talk about ways of reducing the amount of inheritance tax their estate may have to pay in the future and this was the reason I was introduced to Betty. Betty is 87 and widowed, and has an estate worth approximately £650k (her name has been changed to protect her identity). What was unusual about Betty is the fact that she does not have her late husband’s nil rate band available which was used on his death, so she purely has her own nil rate band of £325k which clearly means that she has a “chargeable estate” of £325k. The second problem we encountered was the fact that given Betty’s age, many of the usual methods of mitigating inheritance tax such as whole of life cover, gifting (other than the annual £3k exemption) where not really viable. Betty and her family sincerely hope that she will still be with us in 7 years time, which is the time it takes for gifts to be removed from an estate for IHT purposes, and having come to know her very well, I quite expect her to get a telegram from the Queen. However, sensible financial planning involves a large dose of realism too and it’s more likely that a
77 year old will survive 7 years than an 87 year old! What was really important for me as a Financial Planner was to have the opportunity of involving Betty’s children in our discussions, after all, they will be the ones with the bill to pay one day. The solution that Betty and her children ultimately felt was the most acceptable to them all was using something called Business Property Relief. Assets which qualify for Business Property Relief are exempt from inheritance tax after 2 years without the need for gifting. This means that the client, Betty in this case, still owns the asset herself and has access to it if required. There are a number of providers who have designed investment products which qualify for Business Property Relief, specifically with inheritance tax planning in mind, which are also acceptable in the eyes of the Inland Revenue for this area of financial planning. Of course these investments are not without their risks and are normally suitable for experienced investors who accept that a Business Property Relief investment represents a higher risk than investing in larger, more established companies and that they may be unable to sell at the point they wish to. They may also get back less than they invested. Careful consideration is needed to ascertain whether or not these types of investments are appropriate, another reason for involving the whole family so that full inter generational planning considerations can be assessed. In this case, provided Betty is still with us in 2 years time, the IHT liability has been considerably reduced, something which both she and her children felt was worth the investment risk. For further details, without obligation, please contact my office on 01948 840738 or 0759 5928907. We look forward to hearing from you. Legislation surrounding Business Property Relief investments and as a result their tax treatment may change in the future and could apply retrospectively.

Trustees say thanks to watermill saviour Ernest Croley The Trustees and volunteers of Bunbury Mill presented Ernest Croley with a framed painting of the mill, in recognition of his time as a founder member and Chairman of the Bunbury Watermill Trust. Ernest has twice been instrumental in saving Bunbury Mill - once in 1970 when it was threatened with demolition, and again in 2010 when he gathered together a group of determined people to establish a charitable trust and acquire the mill to keep it open as an educational and heritage institution. In addition to setting up the trust and negotiating the purchase of the mill, Ernest was relentless in raising funds from village organisations, business sponsors and some seventy households within Bunbury and its environs.
Ernest with his framed painting and (below) at work in the mill.
The fact that Bunbury Water Mill is open to the public, schools and organised groups and run entirely by volunteers is a tribute to Ernest’s vision and leadership. Ernest has retired from the board of trustees, but is still to be found at the mill with his paintbrush in hand on Wednesday mornings, and he is organising the next social event, a musical evening on 14th March. For further information about Bunbury Mill visit www.bunburymill.com Bunbury Mill is a grade 2 listed watermill which stands on the edge of Bunbury Village and is close to the A51 Road. There has been a mill on the present site since at least Norman times. The present Mill was substantially rebuilt in the 1850s and much of the present equipment, including the water wheel dates from that period. The Mill continues to produce flour for demonstration purposes and local sale.

Destruction of beauty sp s and much loved by visitors for their aesthetic beauty in all seasons.
Over the years the landscape on Bickerton Hill has developed into a pleasant mix of woodland and heath, writes Tony Ord, from Bickererton Hill Friends group. The woodland has matured with a tracery of footpaths opening into glades of heather and bilberry, creating a very pleasant landscape for walkers to enjoy and children to explore and a wonderful diversity of habitats for the many birds, mammals, reptiles and insects that live on the Hill Where there is open heathland, the landscape has been enriched by interesting groups of trees, particularly the solitary specimen birches, known to generations of children as the ‘picnic trees’ or ‘good trees to climb’

This is how it was on Bickerton Hill until last Autumn when a the National Trust and Natural England decided to change it all, in, what they claim to be, the National interest, thereby realising their vision of a treeless Bronze Age landscape of 3,000 years ago! With a grant of £325,000, most of the woodland from the top of the Hill has been cut down, as have treasured and skyline trees, with no consideration for their landscape value, or for the generations of Hill users and children who have grown to love them and enjoy their beauty. affodils, properly known as Narcissus have flowers from late winter through to spring depending on the variety. The variety February Gold is, as its name suggests, a tall, yellow early flowering variety. I love the sweet scented varieties usually known as Narcissus. For fragrance, grow Cheerfulness, a variety with 3 or more double scented flowers in a creamy white colour. This will flower in Late March to April. Another scented variety that will flower April to May is Narcissus Pheasant Eye. If you like colour contrasts plant the blue flowered Chinadoxa with your daffodils. Only small but with sky blue starry flowers and will self seed happily. Shrubs start flowering in spring so if you want some yellow colour go for Forsythias. Untidy tall growing shrubs but they do flower very early with bright yellow flowers. If you have room for a spring area in the garden, plant a Forsythia, a pink flowering currant, Ribes Pulborough Scarlet alongside and finally a Japanese Quince or Chaenomoles. This last shrub has flowers in either pink, scarlet red or white on bare, spiny

twiggy branches. Once all these have finished flowering you can give them a good pruning the get new stems to grow and flower next year. Underplant these shrubs with Snowdrops, mini Daffodils, Chinodoxa, autumn flowering Cyclamen and the flowering perennial Pulmonaria for a year long season of colour. I would also plant a honeysuckle and a summer flowering clematis through the shrubs for summer colour. Jobs to do in the garden include deadheading daffodils once they have finished flowering. This helps the plant to put its energy into flowers for next year rather than setting seed. Any plants in pots do give a feed to them. Re-pot in new soil based compost such as John Innes No3 mixed with horticultural grit for drainage. If the plant is too heavy, at least remove the top few centimetres of old compost and replace with new. In late March, start planting annuals such as Marigolds, Poppies and Cornflowers outside in seed beds. Finish pruning roses. Give all your plants a feed with a slow release, general purpose fertilizer such as Growmore to give them a boost for spring growth.

Vic’s seek top six finish Tarporley Vic’s First Team made it three wins in a row when they beat Penlake FC by a 6 – 1 scoreline at Tattenhall with Eddy Pattinson scoring a hat-trick of goals in an eventful game which also saw a sending off for both sides. In the weeks prior to this match Tarporley beat Lostock Gralam 4 – 2 and Warrington Town Reserves by 3 goals to 2. These victories have helped propel Tarporley up to eighth position in Division One of the Hallmark Security Cheshire Football League and, with 3 games in hand over most of their rivals, an opportunity to push for a “Top 6” finish. In the Crewe & District FA Challenge Cup Tarporley Vics beat Alsager Town in a quarterfinal game by three goals to two. Carl Smith grabbed two of the goals and Eddie Pattinson claimed the winner. Tarporley Vics have now been draw against Congleton Town Reserves in a March 7th Semi Final with the game being played at Congleton’s Home Ground. The other semi-final is Sandbach United v Crewe FC which leaves Tarporley Vics as the underdogs being the lowest placed Team left in the competition! Whilst Sam Lloyd, Eddy Pattinson & Dan Ball have all returned to Tarporley Vics First Team in recent weeks it’s Carl Smith who continues to lead the goal scoring charts with twelve goals
to date. Captain Alex Moore has also shown good form with four “Man of the Match” awards from opposition Managers. This leaves Alex in second place in the running for the annual League award for Player of the Season; however Carl will need to add even more goals for the “Top goal scorer of the season award”; Jordan Erdmann from Penlake has scored 22 goals from the same number of games. Tarporley Vics Reserves have only been able to play two games in recent weeks losing 2 – 1 to Sandbach Curshaws and then drawing 3 – 3 with Sandbach Town in a Cup game. The Reserves now have a run of League games, which they need to win to challenge Sandbach Curshaws at the top of the League. 1st team Fixtures 7th March, 2pm, Cup: Congleton Vale (A) 14th March, 2pm, League: Golborne Sports (H) 21st March, 2pm, League: Egerton (A) 28th March, 3pm,League: Malpas (A) Please contact Mike, Andy, Sean, Clive, Adam or Matt or any other Tarporley Vics members for any other Tarporley Vics info.
