Bunbury Singers hit the right note for charity Bunbury Singers were very pleased to be able to present St Luke’s Hospice with a cheque for £1,100 as a result of their recent concerts. Mandy Shaw, Community Partnerships Fundraiser from St Luke’s, was delighted to be able to collect the cheque at one of Bunbury Singers’ regular rehearsals. An additional donation of £250 was also presented to Guide Dogs for the Blind, which was collected as a result of carol singing in various Tarporley pubs and the Lockgate Café in Beeston. The choir’s next concert is planned for 12th May at Tarporley Baptist and Methodist Chapel. More details about Bunbury Singers and their activities can be found at www.bunburysingers. co.uk

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BEING A PRIVATE CARER? The need for reliable and compassionate care in the home for the elderly is continually on the increase. We want to provide all those who need help and support with the best possible service and the best possible carers to do this very important job. With 50 years experience of matching the right skills and personalities to our clients, our carers make all the difference to other people’s lives. Flexibility You have the choice of when and where you work, enabling you to build your hours around your family, commitments and general lifestyle. We plan your rota around your availability a month in advance. Teamwork As a family business we work as a team. We like to look after our carers as much as we do our clients. We consider you as part of this family and are always available to talk to you should you have a problem or some concerns. Being Valued Our carers are the backbone of our business and provide an invaluable service to our clients. We think it is important that your wages reflect the quality of your service.
What our carers say “It took me a while to have the confidence to give up my permanent job with the local authority, but I am glad I did. I now work fewer hours to suit my lifestyle and still earn a good living. The main benefit however is being able to do my job in a less stressful way knowing that I really am making a difference to someone else’s life.” ‘Charity of the Month’ For 100 ‘Likes’ on Facebook we will donate £100 to Tarporley War Memorial Hospital Go to at www.bunburyagency.com

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL Newsletter Royal British Legion Car Park As many people are now aware, the former RBL car park is closed for re-development. The Parish Council have been informed that the new car park should be open from about the middle of May 2018. After that they will build the new houses further up the site. Tarporley Parish Council are inviting suggestions from everybody in Tarporley for a name for the new car park on this site. We want to give the car park a new name to mark the change of ownership to the Parish Council. Please send your suggestions for consideration to the Clerk by email (clerk@tarporley.org.uk) by 5th March 2018.
Car Parking Postcards Parking postcards have been created with details of the car parking facilities in Tarporley and are being distributed to all businesses along the High Street. Visitors may not be familiar with all the car parks in Tarporley and this provides information for them.
Inappropriate use of litter bins A small number of businesses and residents have reportedly been observed stuffing rubbish into the black public litter bins on the High Street and at the Community Centre field thereby filling them up to overflowing much sooner than would ordinarily be the case. We would like to remind everyone that these bins are for public use, not for business or household waste and the Parish Council asks those concerned to please stop this practice immediately. Cheshire West and Chester Council Environmental Health Team have informed the Parish Council that penalty fines will be issued to anyone caught using the litter bins inappropriately.
Speeding in the Village Following several complaints about speeding in the village, the local Police Community Support Officer has recently conducted a speed monitoring exercise along the High Street and other roads such as Eaton Road and Cobblers Cross. The drivers caught speeding will be contacted. The Parish Council are working closely with Cheshire Police to try and reduce the number of speeding cars in the village and another speed watch scheme may be introduced this summer. You will also have noticed the new 20mph speed limits by now so please take care not to exceed them. 12 To advertise call 01244 350398

Each meeting starts at 7pm with an Open Forum, during which members of the public can address the whole Council on matters of concern to them. At 6.30pm, prior to this meeting, the Parish Council holds a surgery where members of the public can talk one to one with individual councillors on an informal basis.
What’s On in the Village The Parish Council have been working to update the Tarporley website to include details of activities of clubs and organisations in the village. If you want to find out more information about social or sporting activities taking place, please visit http://www.tarporley.org.uk/whats-on/clubsorganisations/. If you are running an activity that’s not listed on the website, please e-mail Abigail at clerk@tarporley.org.uk to include your details to the web page.
Annual Meeting Following the success of the last year’s Annual Meeting, the Parish Council have agreed to organise a community ‘market place’ style event again this May in the Community Centre. Local Clubs and organisations attended last year to raise awareness and share information with the local community. If you know of any local community organisation that would like a stall at this event, please email the clerk at clerk@tarporley.org.uk or telephone 01829 732 516. The event will take place on Saturday 12th May between 10am and 12pm.

TARPORLEY HIGH SCHOOL & SIXT
East meets west in art residential Year 10 Art & Design pupils recently took part in the annual art residential at the Conway Centre, Anglesey. The students spent the weekend working alongside other talented pupils from across the county with lead art teachers from local schools. This year pupils were challenged to explore western approaches to eastern art producing work which varied from willow vessels, face casts and ornate Indian paintings. Mr Bowland led a workshop centred on Indian spices, fretwork and rich colours.

We could be anything that we want to be! Tarporley High School put on a fantastic production of Bugsy Malone, the musical based on the 1976 Alan Parker film of the same name. Parker’s movie is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the gangster films of the 1920s. In an era when movie musicals were considered a thing of the past, Bugsy Malone was a surprise hit and this was repeated again at the school in 2018! Pictured are Theo Lavin and Kitty Crosbie who play Bugsy and Blousey, the chorus line and other performers in the show.

ABOUT ME “I’ve always been mad about plants and gardens - I sowed my first packet of marigold seeds in my parents’ garden when I was 4 years old! I’ve got a degree in Horticulture and I’ve worked in a variety of horticultural roles, including a year at Kew Gardens. I set up Tim Does Gardens in 2016 to give my clients in Cheshire, the Wirral and London beautiful gardens that are full of year round colour, fragrance and interest”
“Tim has a real passion and knowledge of gardening and garden design. He’s head and shoulders above another gardener I used and he’s helped me create a beautiful garden” “Tim is reliable, makes excellent recommendations, sticks to budgets and does great work for me. HEALTH & BEAUTY By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing
The return of Electrolysis By Angela Bartlett, Owner Sensoria Beauty Q. What can I expect from a mini 10 minute Dermalogica Skin Solver treatment? A.Ten minutes is not long, but it’s amazing what can be achieved in such a short amount of time! Unlike a full Skin Treatment Facial, the ten minute skin solver focuses on how to fix skin concerns fast and although products are applied to your skin to give you a great glow, it’s more focused around education. Your skin therapist will educate and inform you about professional tips on how to achieve your skin care goals. Q. Is electrolysis still popular as I rarely see it advertised any more? A. When laser and IPL (intense pulsed light) started to become commercially available in the 1990’s, most Therapists didn’t feel the need to train in electrolysis any more, as IPL and laser was hailed as the perfect solution to hair removal. As the years passed the limitations of this new type of hair removal became apparent - inability to treat all hair colours, the need to stay out of the sun etc. Now electrolysis has become popular again, but it will take a while before the level of electrolysis practitioners is up to the same number as the were pre-laser and pre-IPL. For more information on the pro’s and con’s of laser/IPL compared to electrolysis please visit the blog page at www.sensoriabeauty.co.uk For the full article and our product recommendations please visit the blog page of our website at www.sensoriabeauty.co.uk

Students get interview experience Students in Year 11 at Tarporley High School attended mock interviews in school run by the Rotary Club. This was a fantastic opportunity for the students to help them in making the transition from school to the wider world of employment or higher education. For some students this was their first interview and although daunted by this, they rose to the challenge and presented themselves in a very mature and professional manner. The school received lots of positive feedback from the Rotarians and the students themselves. Prizes were awarded to the following students at a special assembly; Rebecca Richardson, Luke Williams, Charles Whittingham, Rosie Jowett, Joe CapperMoore, Elizabeth Matthews, Jake Bailey Saltmarsh, Ella Casson, Molly Bleckly, Nicole Morrison, Harry Davies, Luke Martindale and William Murray

Marie Curie needs ‘daffodil volunteers’ in Tarporley Terminal illness charity, Marie Curie is appealing for volunteers to give two hours of their time to hand out the charity’s iconic daffodil pin The charity is hoping to get more people than ever wearing the daffodil pin during its annual fundraiser; the Great Daffodil Appeal this March. Marie Curie Community Fundraiser for Tarporley, Katy Armitage said: “Volunteering to collect donations in return for daffodil pins is a fun and easy way to get involved in the local community. You can collect with a friend or partner and know that you are helping Marie Curie be there when we are needed most. “Chances are, we all know someone who’s been affected by a terminal illness. And it’s heartbreaking that not everyone gets the care and support they need to live their final days with dignity, in the place they want to be. We’re always here with expert information, guidance or just a shoulder to lean on via our support line. “Every daffodil helps Marie Curie care for more people - this is what makes the Great Daffodil Appeal so important.” Those wishing to volunteer two hours of their time to the Great Daffodil Appeal or to find out more about the appeal, can visit www.mariecurie.org.uk/daffodil or call free on 0800 304 7025

MP celebrates 100 years of women’s suffrage
Local MP Antoinette Sandbach MP is supporting a year-long programme of events organised by the UK Parliament to mark 100 years since the 1918 Representation of the People Act, which gave some women the vote for the first time. Schools and community groups in Eddisbury are encouraged to get involved in debating and celebrating the anniversary. Antoinette Sandbach MP said: “The Representation of the People Act 1918 was a vital step towards the rights women have today, and the centenary of the Act is an incredibly important opportunity for us to reflect on how far we have come, thanks to the extreme bravery and sacrifice of the women who fought – and in some cases died – for equality. “Whether it’s chatting about the issues over a cup of tea, or engaging with one of the many exciting events that are part of this year’s UK Parliament Week, there are countless opportunities for schools and community groups across Eddisbury involved14:14:07 in this key anniversary.” Business Card.pdf to get 6/3/12

Ice cream Farm celebrates record year The Cheshire Ice Cream Farm is celebrating a fantastic year which propelled it into the top 20 visitor attractions in the UK. It represents an incredible feat for the Tattenhall dairy farm which was forced to diversify due to a cut in milk subsidies. The venue brought in more than 821,000 visitors to place it alongside the likes of the National Gallery, Science Museum and Brighton Pier in the top free visitor attractions, according to the Visit England survey. Over recent years, visitor numbers have continued to climb despite its rural location, much to the joy of the owners Tom and Margaret Fell and their sons Jonathan and Graeme. Three years ago the venue underwent a £5million redevelopment to open the world’s largest purpose-built ice cream parlour and a large indoor sand and water play area. While admission to the park is free, visitors can go on a range of individual rides, including a mini JCB digger, giant sand castles and crazy golf costing £1 to £3.75.

On your marks, get set for the hospice! Lining up at the start of the Chester Half Marathon on Sunday 29th April will be many runners hoping to raise as much money as possible for their chosen charities. Among these will be Emma Croft, 34, from Hartford, who will be running the 13.1 miles to raise funds for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd in loving memory of her dad. Emma’s dad was diagnosed with Leukaemia over two years ago and cared for at the Hospice before he passed away, aged 72, in May 2017. Emma chose to support the Hospice as she wants to help fund the care that her dad received and said: “We were offered kindness, support, endless cups of tea, aftercare but most importantly my Dad received a painless, dignified, respectful passing.” For Emma, running the course through the city centre streets of Chester will be a big achievement and she is both apprehensive and excited ahead of the big day. “I was supposed to run the Chester Half Marathon the week after my dad died which I never made and have not ran since. It is only recently I decided to start running again and I don’t usually ask for donations. However, the Hospice is an amazing place with a beautiful garden and caring staff. My Dad was lucky, grateful and I know relieved to be able to go there and I will be running with pride in his memory” There are just over 12 weeks to go until the Chester Half Marathon and there is plenty of time to join Emma and raise money for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd. Anyone inspired to sign up can get their own place via the Chester Half Marathon website and then contact fundraising@ hospicegs.com<mailto:fundraising@hospicegs.com> to request a running vest and sponsorship pack.

I've just read that HMRC collected record inheritance tax payments of £4.9bn in the 12 months to April 2017 which was a 4% increase on the previous year. That's an awful lot of money which for the most part has already been taxed along the way (possibly several times) as its been accumulated, either as income tax when it was earned in the first place, more income tax if it's been saved, capital gains tax if the asset realised a profit and finally, inheritance tax at 40% when the owner leaves this mortal coil!
I've not written about this subject for a long time, mainly because until this year, there have been no changes to the inheritance tax nil rate band for some years, and to be fair, the fact that the nil rate band is now transferable between spouses, means that the old adage of "use it or lose it" is no longer a worry. Reading these figures though reminded me of how I felt when I had to write out a cheque to the Inland Revenue many years ago on the death of my mother. My father had predeceased her by some 16 years, she sadly passed away before the rule change allowing the transfer of a deceased spouses unused nil rate band, result, a hefty IHT bill on an estate which today wouldn't even raise a glimmer of hope in the Revenue's eye's. It's clear though, from the figures announced by HMRC that many people are still falling foul of this most unpalatable of taxes, and it's equally clear to me that with some sensible planning and discussion, those of you who may inadvertently be making HMRC one of your main beneficiaries, may be able to remove them, or at the very least considerably reduce their "inheritance" from you. Of course, some of you reading this may not mind in the slightest if more of your estate passes to the revenue than your children, or grandchildren, and that is of course your choice. If that's not your eventual aim though, there are
some very simple things you can do to ensure your wealth passes to the people who matter the most to you. For example, I write a lot about retirement planning, and keeping as much of your capital as you can, for as long as you can in a pension "wrapper" is incredibly tax efficient, so often when I undertake cash flow modelling, I'll suggest drawing on other capital before pension capital. Many people don't realise that gifts from surplus income don't eat into the nil rate band, so if your income is building up, diverting this to a savings or investment product for a child, can help reduce the final inheritance tax bill on your estate, whilst building up capital to enable a child to perhaps put down a deposit on a property or pay off a student loan in years to come. It's fair to say that one size definitely does not fit all, and advice, in what can be a complex area is to my mind essential. If you would like more information on this, or any other area of financial planning, please do give us a call on 01948 840738 or 075959 28907 where me and my team will be happy to help you. The value of an investment with St. James's Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time and is dependent on individual circumstances.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
March highlights
By March, spring will be here, the bulbs will be out, some trees and shrubs will be growing and we will hope that there isn’t a cold snap to damage new growth.
Pale yellow Primroses and Primulas in multi-colours will continue to flower in sheltered spots, along with some blue violets. I expect that blue Forget me Not will be starting to come out too and en-masse they make such a cheerful show. No need to sow seed, just let the plants set seed, shake them around and next year you will get a wonderful show. Another perennial that is good for early spring, will grow in dry light shade and has evergreen foliage, is the Epimedium x versicolour Sulphureum. With heart shaped leaves that turn bronze in winter it will bring forth stems with pale yellow flowers in spring. You can cut off the leaves to see the flowers as they form or leave the leaves on and hope the sprays pop up above the leaves. Continuing the yellow theme, the vibrant yellow flowers of Forsythia will be everywhere on the streets. These easy shrubs will form large twiggy plants with yellow flowers clustered on the leafless stems. You can grow as a hedge covered in yellow blooms before the leaves come out. Cut back just after flowering, to keep them within bounds. Another March flowering shrub is the evergreen Mahonia aquifolium Apollo. This is an unassuming low growing evergreen shrub (to 1m) often grown in shade to cover the ground and usually looking a bit tired as it is ignored. However, try feeding it in spring and you should be rewarded with clusters of yellow flowers. The photo is of a swathe of these shrubs grown as ground cover under taller trees and the scent from the flowers was quite superb. Work to do in the garden includes cutting back dead foliage from perennials, trimming the winter flowering heathers to encourage fresh new growth for next year and completing the pruning of roses. If you grow Cornus or Dogwood for the red or yellow stems, cut them back hard every two or three years to about 30cms tall and give them a good feed of general purpose fertilizer such as Growmore. Feed all trees, shrubs especially roses and perennials with Growmore or a specific Rose Fertilizer to give the plants a good start to the year. Weigh out the recommended dose as I find I don’t apply enough!
