Dance your way to a healthier you with Age UK Cheshire Age UK Cheshire is adding dance to the list of activities it offers at Tarporley Community Centre. Dance 4 Health takes place on Monday afternoons, 12.30 – 1.30pm. (£5 a session). The class is open to all over the age of 50. No dance experience is necessary and the class includes a wide range of dance styles. Age UK Cheshire’s Social Activities Officer, Sean Ray, said “Dance is a fantastic way to extend your range of movement and has many health benefits from boosting bone density to battling conditions like Dementia, Parkinson’s and MS.” The aim of Dance 4 Health classes is to improve strength, balance, co-ordination and reduce the likelihood of falls. Exercises are

based on proven physiotherapy methods but ‘hidden’ in the dance moves so the focus is on expression and enjoyment rather than any underlying problem, research shows this is an effective way to increase motivation and has the additional benefit of being mentally uplifting. ARE WE SEEING THE BEGINNING OF THE COLLAPSE OF SOCIAL CARE FOR THE ELDERLY? ANALYSIS OF THE DATA:

It was recently revealed in a BBC report on social care that nearly 900 adult social care workers a day quit their job in England last year! It said that ‘Service providers are warning that growing staff shortages mean vulnerable people are receiving poorer levels of care’. In a letter to the prime minister, the chairman of the UK Homecare Association said the adult social care system has begun to collapse. The government said an extra £2bn is being invested in the system, but an ageing population means the demand continues to increase which means people are receiving deteriorating levels of care.

l An estimated 338,520 care workers have left their roles in 2015-16. That is equivalent to 928 people leaving their job every day. l 60% of those left working in the care sector altogether. l The average full-time frontline carer earned £7.69 an hour, or £14,800 a year. l One in every four carers are employed on a zero hour’s contract. l There was an estimated shortage of 84,320 carers, meaning around one in every 20 care roles remain vacant. Some of the carers interviewed, said whilst they really care about the people they look after, they feel permanently guilty and stressed as they rarely have time to do their job properly. Many feel that the care sector is becoming a dead end job as not enough time is allocated to do a good job and most of them earn less than people who work in a supermarket stacking shelves.

TIME TO INVEST IN THE HEALTH AND WELLBEING OF OUR CARERS

But, until the government sorts this out and can provide the correct amount of funding to local authorities, the private care sector remains an attractive alternative. As an industry we cannot lose these dedicated people.

If you are on a zero hour’s contract, why not consider working in the private sector. Minimum call is 1 hour - £12 per hour weekdays & £15 per hour weekends plus 45p per mile travel allowance.

If you would like to discuss the many care options available, or join our team of carers, please contact us on 01829 260280.

Last orders at Kelsall pub The Lord Binning pub in Kelsall has closed after six years. Jane Mooney who ran the pub with her husband David, the chef, says they have decided to concentrate on their other gastro pubs in Liverpool, Knutsford and Eastham. On their twitter feed, the final tweet said: “Thanks Kelsall you’ve been lovely, time for someone else to pick up the challenge.” Jane told the Chester Chronicle: “We looked at what worked for us and the rural country pub just wasn’t working anymore. Our other pubs are our focus now and they are absolutely flying. The Lord Binning was started by Paul Newman and David Mooney’s New Moon company in 2011, when they converted the old Morris Dancer pub. The pub is the traditional venue for the Chester Folk Festival, which will continue on 26th-29th May, despite the closure.

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL Newsletter Ex-RBL Site Development Planning Application ref. 17/00760/FUL for the ex-RBL site covers demolition of the RBL club hall, erection of 10 dwellings on the site of the old car park and a portion of the allotments, provision of a new car park at the entrance to the site, access road and ancillary works. Full details of the application and comments can be found at www. cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk by searching for reference number 17/00760/FUL. The public extraordinary meeting of Tarporley Parish Council on 27th March to discuss the planning application was attended by approximately 30 members of the Bowling Club, Allotments, neighbours to the ex-RBL site and other interested parties. Taking all the comments into account, along with the Tarporley Neighbourhood Plan and other planning policies, the Parish Council submitted comments to CW&C on 31st March. These comments can be seen on the CW&C website and the minutes of the meeting can be seen on www. tarporley.org.uk/tarporley-parishcouncil/meetings/ Essentially, Tarporley Parish Council support in principle the development of the former Royal British Legion site but cannot support the application as submitted for reasons relating to: the height and design of the proposed properties, access arrangements to the bowling green and allotments, and transfer of ownership of the allotments, bowling green & car park. Updates on meetings and decisions regarding this planning application will be published when known. 12 To advertise call 01244 350398

Parking Time limited parking restrictions introduced recently by the Community Centre on the Community Centre Car Park have unfortunately led to serious congestion on the roads nearby as those who used to park all day there have parked on surrounding streets instead, occasionally causing obstructions and hazards for pedestrians. The Parish Council is already in advanced discussions with CW&C Council regarding the extension of double yellow lines on Eaton Road and Bowmere Road plus introduction of time limited parking on certain parts of the High Street. Formal consultation by CW&C should start very soon. Tarporley High School are working on increasing their car parking capacity and will meet with the Parish Council after the Easter holiday to discuss what more could be done. The Parish Council are also actively exploring options to increase car park capacity off the High Street. Meanwhile, it would help if people parked considerately but if you see any vehicle parked causing an obstruction then please notify the Police by dialling their non-emergency number 101.

Music meets maths at Duddon Children at Duddon Primary School recently took part in a maths challenge. The Year 3 class – with the help of their teacher and maths subject co-ordinator, Kathryn Marsh – put together an animated Powerpoint presentation accompanied by them singing. The maths challenge encourages the children (pictured) to learn their times tables ‘off by heart’, which is proven to have a positive impact on the children’s ability to problem solve quickly. The event was sponsored by Nantwich Accountants Afford Bond.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Tarporley, Tattenhall, Kelsall, Tarvin &

Bunbury areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends

and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Life saving defibrillator in Tarporley Tarporley company Dayinsure have installed an external defibrillator on site, which could potentially save lives in the village. The company worked with North West Ambulance Service to find a suitable defibrillator which would be simple enough for the layman to use in an emergency, but would also fill the requirements of the emergency services. With their help, the company chose a fully automated defibrillator, which, from the moment the lid is opened, guides you through the whole process. This makes a frightening situation much less stressful for the general public. The AED has been installed & is fully operational at Tarporley Business Centre, on Nantwich Road. This means that the unit is available to the emergency services at all times. The general public are provided with the access code if they call 999 in a cardiac arrest situation. I’m a student – get me out of here! A group of 19 students and two staff members from Tarporley High School and Sixth Form College, will be joining a jungle expedition in Borneo this summer. They are linking up with Camps International to visit the rainforest where they will be helping the local indigenous people construct a school, waterways and furniture. They will also help to regenerate the rainforest and protect the habitat by collecting seeds and planting trees. It’s not all going to be hard toil – there will be a visit to the world-renowned Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary and diving in the warm tropical waters of the South China Sea. The students have all been fund raising over the past 18 months with car boot sales, Christmas tree removals, car washing, restaurant take overs, raffles, cake sales and a non-uniform day in March at school.

HEALTH & BEAUTY By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing

Sailors and slaves... to beauty By Angela Bartlett, Owner Sensoria Beauty

Have you ever wondered why some people can sail through life looking fabulous with the minimum amount of effort, whilst others are a slave to their beauty regime and spend large amounts of time and money on beauty and still don’t achieve a good result? We will always know people who seem to have it all from the moment that they were born, and put in no effort at all, but they are usually few and far between. It’s not always what you are born with that matters and over the years I have met and treated people who have not been blessed with naturally good looks but have matured better than their ‘have-it-all’ colleagues by making a few sensible choices when it comes to beauty. Today, it’s no wonder that women (and men) get coerced into spending huge amounts of money on products and treatments as there is such an array of things to choose from. The marketing of these products and services is often very compelling and at times very aggressive. The beauty industry is worth around £17 billion to the UK economy and we are encouraged to spend more and more. However, it’s not necessary to sink large amounts of your money, and time, into looking the best you can. Over the years I have helped the clients who visit us to think smart when it comes to beauty treatments and product purchase. In this article I am going to guide you into what to think about to save you valuable time and hard-earned money with a few simple steps to help you look your best. The first step is to assess and prioritise. Be truly objective about your good points and your weaker ones. This can be difficult, so if you are struggling with this step get help from a good friend or a trusted source such as a qualified beauty therapist or personal stylist. Once, you have made this initial, and often most demanding, step the following processes are plain sailing! To read the rest of this article please visit the blog page at www.sensoriabeauty. co.uk for simple easy to follow steps on looking fabulous.

Fundraiser Karen Urmston, Trustee John Cheshire, Matron Rachel Cowley, Brian Byrne, Beryl McCain, Hospital Director Karin Dalaemans and Trustee Sue Sellers.

Hospital’s Grand National fund raiser On the 40th Anniversary of Red Rum’s third victory at Aintree, Beryl McCain, wife of the late legendary horse trainer, Ginger McCain, was at Tarporley War Memorial Hospital for the first Grand National Sweepstake, to raise much needed funds for the Hospital. After much anticipation, ‘The Lucky 40’ as they are called, were drawn at the Hospital Reception. Karen Urmston, Tarporley Hospital’s Fundraising coordinator said “We were thrilled that Beryl McCain gave up her time freely to draw first ever annual sweepstake. The hospital relies on the full support of our community.” Beryl McCain, who was thrilled to meet some of the Hospital team, was asked how she got involved with the draw and explained “I was approached by Brian Byrne [hospital fundraiser] and I do think that the hospital does a very very good job. I was quite surprised to learn it is mostly self-funded and I’m very happy to support it.” Tarporley War Memorial Hospital has been The Heart of The Community for nearly 100 years and is a charity run Hospital, with both inpatient and outpatient facilities, and isn’t part of the NHS. Every year, they have to raise 70% of the funds needed to continue providing its support to the local community. To keep up to date with the Hospital and its events, visit www.tarporelyhospital. co.uk, follow them on twitter - @Tarporely_WMH or you can find them on Facebook. Pictures by Caroline O’Gorman

I’ve been thinking quite a lot this past couple of weeks about what advice my 75 year old self would say to my current middle aged self (actually I’m a tad past official middle age but didn’t someone say that your 50’s are the new 40’s!). One of the things my 75 year old self would most definitely say is that the next 30 years will pass quicker than you’d ever think possible so don’t put off till tomorrow what you should be doing today. That of course is true of all aspects of life, and news headlines constantly remind us of the uncertainties that surround us, and to be honest, always have. Last week, I received some quite shocking news; my husband has a much younger half-brother, who at 42 would officially fall into the category of middle age, but is still frighteningly young to suffer a stroke, however that’s exactly what happened. He has a wife and two children, both of whom are still at school, a mortgage, a job with some sick pay provision (three months full pay, three months half, before dropping to Statutory Sick Pay of £89.95 per week thereafter). We have no real idea as to when and if he will be able to return to work and if so, in what capacity and if he does have to rely on Statutory sick pay this wouldn’t meet his monthly mortgage payments, never mind replace his salary. A couple of weeks ago the government did a U turn regarding an increase in National Insurance Contributions for the self-employed, who of course still wouldn’t qualify for Statutory Sick Pay (or Maternity/Paternity pay) even if the increase had gone ahead. A common theme, particularly with the self-employed is to continually put off until tomorrow, what they really should be doing

today, and protecting an income is often completely overlooked. My brother-in-law does have some breathing space due to his employee benefits, but for the self-employed there is no such breathing space unless you sort something out for yourself. I’ve written a lot over the years about building capital for the future, how to make the most out of tax advantaged savings, Inheritance Tax and Long Term Care Planning, but I rarely talk about protecting the very thing which provides the solutions, and that is usually a person’s ability to stay healthy enough to earn the money which pays for the solutions! So, whilst I would certainly agree with my 75 year old self, the next 30 years will no doubt pass far quicker than I could ever imagine, I’m also pretty sure that if the next 30 years had to be spent in considerable financial hardship, with the prospect of losing my home, as well as my health, the time will pass far more slowly. As we approach the start of a new tax year, taking the opportunity of arranging a financial health check is something your 75 year old self would wholeheartedly agree with. Please do give us a call on 01948 840738 or 075959 28907 to arrange a meeting without obligation.

Richard’s memory lives on with scholarship fund raiser The family of Richard Pover, who died of cancer aged 21 in 2013, held a second charity curry night at the Red Fox restaurant near Tarporley. The idea was to raise funds for the scholarship they are aiming to set up at the University of Sheffield in Richard’s memory, where he was a student of mechanical engineering. It was a lovely but rather hectic buffet evening with roughly 100 people attending, which was more than expected, leaving the restaurant completely full. Thanks to everyone for their patience while drinks and extra tables and chairs were laid out and for negotiating the school dinner style queue for food. Richard’s mum Anne said: “It really was a lovely, sociable evening and Richard would have been very impressed to know that with the raffle, money from the curry and donations from those who didn’t come, we have raised a fantastic £1200, which is absolutely brilliant and I have had nothing but positive feedback from those who came. “We are as always deeply touched by the support we receive in our quest to set up the scholarship at Sheffield University and keep Richard’s memory alive and I am also very grateful and surprised by the generosity of a whole host of High Street businesses who gave raffle prizes. A fantastic Tarporley team effort all round I think.” The Richard Pover Outstanding Contribution Award will be given annually to an outstanding mechanical engineering student at the University of Sheffield, who has not only excelled academically but who has made an extra contribution to the department. It is hoped that recipients will make a career in engineering and help to make the world a better place for us all. The family are hoping to raise £40,000 to fund an annual award of £1200 from the interest on the lump sum. Contributions to this award can be made at www.justgiving.com/rememberingrichardpover 66 To advertise call 01244 350398

TARPORLEY HIGH SCHOOL & SIX

English becomes Crystal clear World-leading linguistics expert David Crystal visited Tarporley to deliver two lectures on critical aspects of the English language A level course: ‘Bringing Grammar to life’ and ‘Attitudes towards English Accents – past, present and future.’ A Level English teacher Mrs McMillan stated: “Having taught David Crystal’s theories, research and ideas about language in my classroom for many years, I feel very lucky to have heard from the great man himself. Many of us bought new books, got old well-thumbed texts signed and left feeling very inspired!” English Language has consistently been a top performing A Level subject at Tarporley High School and Sixth Form College. We are sure this trip left current and future linguistics feeling well informed and truly motivated. Right: A Level Language students Tom Lea and Sam Roberts with David Crystal

Gothic horror on stage A total of 44 students and four members of staff from the English and Drama departments got on a coach to see The Woman in Black at the Lowry Theatre in Salford, to consolidate the gothic literature unit, write Hannah Whitehouse and Jack Hirst. We expected many actors and multiple sets but, on the contrary, there were just three actors and very few props. Still, the air was never calm, with amazingly timed sound effects that always succeeded in drawing the audience to the edge of their seats. The actors never broke character, which alongside dramatic changes in sound and light, cemented the feel of a true gothic tale. 70 To advertise call 01244 350398

IXTH FORM COLLEGE Head shave and pub quiz help raise £2,000 It has been a busy time for Tarporley Sixth Form students. Apart from considering their university pathways at the UCAS Convention in Manchester and the Oxbridge Conference in Merseyside, Sixth Formers have worked hard to raise money for their Charity Fund. By harnessing their creative ideas, they organised a hotly contested Staff v Sixth Form ‘Pub Quiz’, won by the students. Some of the other events included ‘Dress up/Down Day’, ‘Wear Pink for George’, (in honour of the George Heath Foundation) a chocolate raffle and daily cake sales. One of the highlights of the week had to be the waxing event, which saw Josh Booth Y12, James MacPhee Y13, and other ‘victims’ endure pain and distress willingly inflicted by Mrs Everton. In addition, Jack Bairstow Y13 bravely agreed to have his head shaved by none other than Director of Sixth Form, Mr Nuttall, who relished his new-found role! The annual Valet Day, which was as successful as ever, saw Sixth Formers gainfully employed by groups of KS3 students, carrying bags and purchasing a variety of delicacies from offsite eateries. We anticipate raising a significant sum of around £2,000 and Charity Fund donations will be divided between local and national charities. Special thanks go to Council Chair, Megan Latham, as well as to Lizzie Simpson, Emma Peake, Caoimhe Stein, Anna Meredith, Natasha Jones, Zoe Hannah and Joe Mills, together with all the other members of the Sixth Form Council.

Tarporley Talk May 2017 87

What’s on in your village MAY Peckforton and Beeston WI The speakers for our April meeting were Annette and John Christophers from Albrighton Pottery; they talked about the history of pottery from its earliest form in 6000BC, at that time children played in the mud and took it back to their homes where it was found accidentally to harden under heat and form useable vessels. Clay is a vital part of our daily lives from bricks, tiles, ceramics, sanitary ware, and even in pencil leads. We were shown how to mould small ‘plaque’ shapes decorated with our own initials, these were then formed into a large bowl which will be fired and given back to our WI as a gift and can then be raffled for charity. It was a most interesting and amusing talk with a chance to purchase items of beautiful pottery and painted cards afterwards. At our May meeting we shall talk about WI Resolutions and have a talk about An Overseas Disability Charity and in June we have our Garden Party. Margaret Ellis 01829 261898 West Cheshire Rural U3A Come and join us for the next meeting on Thursday 18th May at the Barbour Institute in Tattenhall. Bill Sergeant will talk about “Liverpool Heroes”, the monument in Abercrombie Square depicting Captain Noel Chavasse and two other soldiers. Refreshments will be available from 2pm. For further information on membership and forthcoming events please contact either Hilary Scarratt 01829 770516 Hilary@Scarratt.com or visit our website u3asites.org.uk/west-cheshire Kelsall WI Our next meeting on Wednesday 3rd May should be of interest to everyone, as who doesn’t have milk sometime during the day, either in a cuppa or on cereal. Joanna Lomas from Street Farm will be telling us about the benefits of raw milk. In November 2016, after receiving permission from the Food Standards Agency, Street Farm started selling Fresh Raw Milk from the milk shed via a vending machine called the ‘Milkbot’. So come and join us at 7.30 in Kelsall Methodist Hall, visitors and new members are always welcome. Details of all our meetings can be found on our website www.kelsallwi.org.uk Tarporley WI Come and join us for May’s meeting: Jean Finney will be exploring the History of Nursery Rhymes, which is a very popular talk with lots of interesting stories to share. We will also be discussing the annual resolution for the WI; this year we are looking at alleviating loneliness and keeping plastic out of our oceans. We will have the opportunity to learn more, and vote for which cause we wish to support. Find out more by visiting our website: www.TarporleyWI.org, or find us onFacebook: Tarporley Women’s Institute. See you on Wednesday 3rd May, at 7:30pm for 8pm in the Done Room behind St Helen’s Church. Bring a friend, the first meeting is free! £5 for non-members. Bring a torch as it’s dark! A warm welcome awaits you. Bunbury Singers They meet every Monday evening during term time at 7.45pm to 9.15pm at the Aldersey Primary School in School Lane, Bunbury. New members are always welcome, there are no auditions. Email info@bunburysingers.org.uk 88 To advertise call 01244 350398

What’s on in your village MAY Tarporley U3A goes from strength to strength Tarporley & District U3A have recently signed up their 500th member having only been operating for just over three years. Vice chairman David Carter said: “Retired people welcome an organisation that gives them such a wide choice of subjects and activities in which to participate. As well as gaining our 500th member we have now also over 30 interest groups on offer. The latest to start up are Genealogy (Family History and Trees) and Public Speaking. Our members come from all over the district – half from Tarporley itself and half from the surrounding villages” In March the U3A was able to provide funds which with the help of Tarporley Community Centre have paid for a ceiling mounted projector in their main

hall. David said: “This projector, which cost around £2000, is a great improvement in terms of picture quality as well as being much more convenient to set up with no trailing wires. The projector is now a Community Centre asset and available for anyone who hires the hall to use.” This year’s speakers have included the internationally famous astronomer Professor Ian Morison who talked on “The search for life beyond earth”; local Toastmaster Fred Jones who told tales of the many weddings he has officiated over – some hilarious, some more worrying! In January Geoff Taylor who was brought back by popular request to talk further about his family’s boatbuilding business.

The interest groups now cover a wide range of subjects from Art Appreciation to Walking, the latter now operating 4 groups providing from 1 hour gentle strolls to all day hikes and climbs. Members are encouraged to bring their own skills to groups and share them. U3A does not run classes – its members share their knowledge so they can all learn together. They also learn and have fun together by going out on regular trips to the theatre, galleries, towns – one recent trip being to the BBC studios in Salford. David also said “There are still lots more people in the area who could benefit from the U3A but may be a bit wary about the ‘University’ image. It couldn’t be further from the reality – no one teaches, no one tests, no one fails – we just get our teeth into subjects and topics of our own choice and enjoy them together. We will be holding a showcase meeting in June and everyone will be invited to come along and see what our members have done and are planning to do.” Pictured: The local history group on a recent visit to Norton Priory.
