THANK YEW AT A TIME when village pubs are struggling up and down the country, it’s good to see that the Yew Tree, in Bunbury, has been taken over by the Chester Race Company so hopefully will have a secure future.

Nice weather for frogs! The recent heavy rainfall had unexpected consequences here in Tarporley. As the water receded on the fields behind St Helen’s Church it left big pools of frog spawn exposed. Thanks to Nick Maycock for the picture

A CRUEL DISEASE.......
We looked after a lovely gentleman called Geoff for 8 of the 20 years he suffered from Multiple Sclerosis. Sadly he passed away in February. His daughter and I became quite close and she has written this lovely testimonial which says it all.
“With circumstances thrust upon me, I was suddenly responsible for organising care and companionship for my father who had already suffered with Primary Progressive MS for 20 years. MS is a cruel disease; it took my father piece by piece. Without the support from Bunbury and their carers, I don’t think I could have coped. They have helped me, not only with the care planning and the funding I needed from the local authority but also given me emotional support. Our last carer, Bonnie, was due to start her 5th year with us, when my father sadly passed away. She was fabulous! She was loyal, immaculately clean, made delicious home cooked food, and gave top notch care. With me trying to raise my family and look after my father, I knew I could rely and trust my carers, which took a huge weight from my shoulders.
Before Bunbury, we used agencies who seemed to take the largest share of the money and the actual carer was paid pitifully. You know what they say; ‘you pay peanuts, you get monkeys’, and we ran into difficulties when the quality of carers did not match my father’s and my family’s needs. They were affordable, which left enough money in the pot to pay the carers a decent wage. We immediately noticed the difference in the quality of care and the abilities of their carers . I’m so grateful I had Bunbury Care behind me these last years of my dad’s life. I wish to thank them all for being there for me and my father. They are a ‘5 star’, agency with a great management team who keep things running as they should”. Victoria, 2018

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL Newsletter Making Tarporley a Pleasant Place to Live During recent months a number of Parish Council projects have come to fruition – new benches and notice boards have been installed in the High St and Lychgate Lane (a private roadway leading to St Helen’s historic Lychgate) has been resurfaced and bollards installed. Installation of these bollards had become necessary to ensure that parked cars can no longer stop cemetery and graveyard contractors, funeral cars and wedding cars gaining access to the Parish Council cemetery, graveyard, and Church. As to the benches, they were specifically designed for the village and the Parish Council took care to choose sustainable European oak as the material for them. The Village notice board has also been especially designed and to fit A4 posters in marked rows. The Parish Council have been pleased to receive thanks from many people in the village about these improvements. Our Footpath Officer (a local resident, a volunteer) made a number of recommendations at our last Parish Council meeting about improvements and repairs needed to the footpaths around the village. The Parish Council are taking these forward and assisting with some funds to carry out the work.
Tidy Up Tarporley Carrying on with this theme, the Parish Council were pleased to support members of Tarporley Rotary Club, and some local residents who all got together on a Saturday morning at the end of March to litter pick the Community Centre field, weed and sweep most of the High St and cut back the vegetation behind the new village notice board. It is hoped that residents will carry on this good work themselves by keeping the area around where they live weed and litter free. Borough Council’s cut backs mean that the amount of such work that will be done in the village is significantly reduced. So it’s up to each of us. l This brings me to the subject of people who do not clean up after their dogs once they foul our public areas, whether it be pavements, hedgerows, footpaths or the Community Centre field. It is a criminal offence with a fine of £1,000 on conviction. Apart from that it is anti-social not to pick up after your dog. Dog waste, provided it is in a plastic bag, can be put in any of the litter bins around the village. If you see anyone not cleaning up after their dog, take a photo of them and their dog and send it to the Parish Clerk. clerk@tarporley.org.uk or leave a message on 01829 732516. She will handle the matter from then on and make the required reports to the relevant authorities. Thank you everyone. Let’s try and make Tarporley litter and dog poo free. 12 To advertise call 01244 350398

Young firefighters return from Far East mission Apprentice firefighters from Cheshire have returned home after helping school children in Nepal. Among them was 21-year-old Hannah Remelie, a part-time on-call firefighter in Tarporley. The 11 apprentices and three leaders flew out to Kathmandu from Manchester and spent 16 days in Nepal trekking to, and working on the project, to provide a new school for children who previously had little or no chance of an education. Together the group raised over £30,000 for the charity Classrooms in the Clouds (CiTC), for the building of the much-needed Early Years Centre in Kharikhola, a remote Nepalese village near Lukla. Deputy Chief Fire Officer for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service Mark Cashin said: “This project not only helps young people in Nepal to gain a better education, but it also enables the Service to motivate its apprentices and get them ready, both physically and mentally, to become firefighters out in the communities of Cheshire.”

HEALTH & BEAUTY By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing
Annoying skin tags! By Angela Bartlett, Owner Sensoria Beauty Q. I have lots of little fleshy bits of skin around my neck area. They are really annoying! What are they and how can I remove them? A. A consultation would be needed to establish the exact nature of these growths, but they sound very much like skin tags. These small benign growths can form in areas where there is friction from skin, clothing or jewellery. We have been effectively treating these lesions for many years as they are very easily removed with short wave diathermy or with Cryopen. To find out more about the procedure for their removal visit the blog page at www.sensoriabeauty.co.uk and read Skin Tag Removal Q. I have oily skin and often find that night creams are too rich. With oily skin do I need a night cream? A. You probably have seen movies with ladies going to bed in hair rollers with thick night cream slathered on their faces! Thankfully modern night cream formulations have changed a lot and there is now a night time skin care product to benefit every skin condition. The skin has a natural cycle and the needs of your skin at night is different to that of the morning. At night time the skins temperature is higher and is more receptive to active ingredients so you can more effectively treat skin at night than during the day. If your skin is oily try light gel-cream formulations packed with ingredients that will improve your skins condition without adding additional oil. If you are unsure if the product will benefit your skin always ask for a sample with your purchase and agree to be able to return the unopened product if you feel it is not going to suit your skin. For the full article and our product recommendations please visit the blog page of our website at www.sensoriabeauty.co.uk

Thieves left empty handed in cash machine raid Police are appealing for information after offenders targeted a cash machine in Tarvin. At approximately 4.25am on Monday 2nd April police were called to the Co-op, on Bypass Road where they discovered that thieves had attempted to take an ATM machine from outside. Det Const Gareth Yates said: “On this occasion the offenders were unsuccessful in their attempts and fled the scene empty handed. However, they caused a significant amount of damage and we are committed to doing all that we can to bring them to justice. “The investigation is currently ongoing and we’re following a number of lines of enquiry, including CCTV and forensics. “As part of the investigation we’re keen to locate a silver hatchback car which was seen in the area around the time of the incident and as part of this I’d like to hear from anyone who was driving in the Tarvin area between 4am and 5am and has a dashcam fitted to their vehicle.”
Anti-social behaviour in Kelsall POLICE say they have received further reports of antisocial behaviour by youths in Grub Lane, Kelsall. Ryan Reid, from Cheshire Police, said: “We are committed to tackling any type of anti-social behaviour but we need the continued support of members of the public, and the parents of the youths involved, to tackle this problem.” You can contact Ryan by email at ryan.reid21364@cheshire.pnn.police.uk.

If there is one thing I’ve learned over the years of working and giving advice in the area of Financial Planning, it’s that time in the markets is far better than trying to time the markets!
Recent stock market volatility has reminded us that investing into stocks and shares isn’t always one way traffic and values can and will fall as well as rise. You could be forgiven if you are wondering whether it’s worth using your annual ISA allowances, or indeed Pension Allowances this year given the depressing news stories about world leaders who seem to govern by Twitter or get re-elected via rigged polling booths This time last year you’d have been investing at all time stock market highs, and this year, whilst markets are still high, they are somewhat down on the start of the year. Here though is my point, no one knows what will happen in the markets next week, let alone next year and actually it really doesn’t matter too much for the medium to long term investor, and I include myself in this, in my attempts to ensure that I do all I can to avoid poverty in old age, as I suspect is the case for most serious savers. Over long periods, asset prices have tended to rise and that means putting your money to work in the markets and keeping it there. Even if you had a crystal ball and could pick your moments to invest, leaving too much cash earning paltry interest rates whilst waiting for the right time to invest can seriously compromise your longer term returns. The most important thing is to have a plan, and to stick to it, whether you are approaching 50 and just waking up to the fact that the next 10 to 15 years are really, really important if you want to fund a level of self -indulgence in retirement that has perhaps been the luxury of your own parents. Perhaps you have already retired and have built up capital reserves which in all probability may well need to
support your children or grandchildren, or indeed you are the children and grandchildren, reading this but not fully realising that you have something that can make the most of stock market assets, and that is time, something that’s in far more limited supply for your parents! Most fund managers and investment houses will allow investors to save on a regular monthly basis and this means that more shares are bought when prices are low and fewer when prices are high. The longer term effect of this is that market shocks and volatility are just not felt in the same way. The same is true for regular funding of a pension, which is how most of us save for retirement, so everything above is also true for this method of saving. So, what’s the moral of the story, don’t worry too much about short term market volatility and share price fluctuations, instead take a longer term view, take advice where appropriate, have a plan and stick to it. Please call us on 01948 840738 or 075959 28907 if you would like more information on this or any other area of financial planning. The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. An investment in a Stocks and Shares ISA will not provide the security of capital associated with a cash ISA. The favourable treatment given to ISAs may not be maintained in the future as they are subject to changes in legislation.

Enterprising companies earn the plaudits TWO local businesses have been recognised in the annual High Sheriff of Cheshire Enterprise Awards. Urban Landscape Design, based in Great Barrow, and Chestnut Meats, of Tarporley, received awards for business excellence. Holly Youde, director at Urban Landscape Design, winner of the coveted High Sheriff’s Award for Enterprise, said: “It is testimony to the hard work of the whole team, who are a huge support and share our vision. There are exciting times ahead for Urban and this is a great endorsement both for professional development and the future of the business.” The company wins a place on the University of Chester’s MBA programme, for an appropriately qualified member of staff, worth £10,000. The new Micro Enterprise Award category was won by Tarporley-based online butchers Chestnut Meats, which will receive £2,000 worth of prize money. Managing director Marnie Dobson said: “We are over the moon to receive this prestigious Award. We would like to thank our customers for their support, staff for all their hard work and suppliers for their wonderful products. Chestnut Meats is proud to be named Micro Enterprise Winner 2017-18 and looks forward to growing the business and our team further in the year ahead.” Sarah Callander Beckett, the High Sheriff of Cheshire, added “One of the highlights of my year as High Sheriff has been promoting the wonderful businesses across the county and in particular introducing the new Micro Business award. “Celebrating the wealth of opportunity and variety of enterprises from the more rural south to the enterprise and science corridors of the north of the county is so important.”

Volley of tributes for departing chairman Rob Tarvin Tennis Club held its latest AGM in the unusual setting of the Edna Rose Room at the Community Centre, with a glass or two of wine and ‘nibbles’ to help the evening along. It marked the stepping down of Rob Millar as chairman after a total of 18 years in that capacity over two periods, not quite reaching Margaret Dixon’s record of 1 19 years, however! A fulsome tribute to Rob was paid by chairman of the trustees, Barry Cooper, who also thanked the committee for their great efforts over the 2 year. There were encouraging reports on the finances of the club but both good and disappointing playing reports, following the loss of some long-standing senior players. The Club Tournament and the American Tournaments were well supported, however, as were the various day-time tennis sessions. Visiting clubs have praised the new pavilion and the floodlights are proving a useful extra feature, both facilities being achieved under the last years of Rob’s leadership. Secretary Felicity Pochin and treasurer Rowena Okell were re-elected unopposed, as was the remainder of the committee en bloc. Jo Houlbrook was also welcomed as a new member of the committee. For their many years of dedicated support and contribution to the running of the club, tributes were paid to departing members Jane Wilson, Barbara Francis, Judi Jennings and Andrea Gray. Grateful thanks for her long service were also expressed to Jean Davies, who first joined the committee in 1982 and acted variously as Ladies’ Captain, Treasurer for 15 years, Ladies’ ‘A’ team 5 captain and weekday sessions organiser. Their contributions were all much appreciated. Formal presentation of the trophies followed and the evening was completed by a general discussion on how to drive the club further and encourage new members.

Cubs and Scouts take to the stage Every two years, the 1st Tarporley Scout Group put together a fun performance known as “Our Show” to entertain their friends and family. After a frantic few weeks of singing practice, costume making, word learning and stage choreography, the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers took to the stage of Tarporley High School with an entertaining mix of comedy sketches, singing and dancing. A number of awards were presented on the night, including to Ian Harrison, aka Rikki, who retired from Cubs after a mere 35 years! Sam Brodie, mum to one of the Cubs, said “What a fabulous show!! I think we are all proud parents tonight. Huge thank you to everyone who made it all come together.”

Bunbury Mill is ready for the summer Volunteers have had a busy winter making sure that the Bunbury Mill is shipshape for the summer. The repair jobs have included replacing perished timbers on the two large sluices, retimbering the 10-ton water wheel, rebuilding the rotted pentrough, and replacing damaged wooden cogs in the gear wheels, which has amounted to over 500 hours of volunteer effort. Contractors have completed landscaping work on the grounds, and planting is in hand, while other contractors have replaced rotten windows in the mill building (funded largely by a grant from WREN). The Visitor centre has been repainted by volunteers, and the old flooring has been replaced throughout with Flotex. Last year an estimated 2,000 visitors came to the site and this year promises to be equally busy.

Happy 8th Anniversary to Emma Creasey Lettings
T
attenhall-based company Emma Creasey Lettings is celebrating its eight-year anniversary this month.
Emma Creasey said: “I can’t believe that just over eight years ago and after much family persuasion that this was the right time to “do it” I opened up my office in Tattenhall. “I started completely from scratch in 2010, just myself, my experience and my dear friend and former work colleague Valerie! I must have been mad. We are now a strong team of six here at Emma Creasey Lettings and having organically grown over the eight years to become the largest letting only agency in the area.” Emma learned her craft in London before moving back up to Cheshire. She added: “I was so fortunate to start my career with Savills in Knightsbridge, London. What a fantastic company, the training, ethos and team all gave me incredible experience and grounding for the eight years I was with them. And what a fantastic “patch” for a young, excitable, ambitious and very keen girl to learn it was! “Next was back home to Cheshire and after four great years working for a well-known and very well established company in Chester which gave me the great opportunity and autonomy to grow the lettings business. “The natural next step for me was to set up on my own. I wanted my own business to consistently offer a first class service, in a professional yet friendly way. Having the confidence through experience and being able to offer such a service would be what I was seeking when looking for a letting agent. Being positioned where we are and covering the area that we do, I also recognised that the diversity 78 To advertise call 01244 350398
of the Landlords and Tenants meant we had to be flexible in our approach. One day I can be appraising a large country house with ten acres of garden and the next a small apartment in Hoole, Chester. I deal with Landlords and Tenants of all ages and backgrounds and again this requires an individual approach to everyone, not a standard “High Street” one size fits all.” Emma Creasey Lettings is now firmly established as one of the only specialist letting agencies in the area and has a fantastic reputation for professionalism, quality advice and a reliable and friendly service. To say thank you to all their customers, they recently held a competition on social media to win a magnum of fizz! And the company will be hosting an event in Tarporley soon to celebrate and take time out to thank their loyal customer base. Now a family business, which Emma runs with husband Richard, who heads up the evergrowing management department and accounts, those core values of quality, reliable, professional service are the same, and business is booming and going from strength to strength. Emma said: “In uncertain economic times when government legislation around renting property is ever changing, people are looking for us to offer reliable, up to date advice around the legalities of being a landlord. “We have great plans for the future, of which I will keep you informed, and we are here to answer any industry queries. If you have a house you wish to rent out, you are thinking of buying to let, or you are looking for a property to rent, get in touch, we will be able to help you.”
