Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Tarporley, Tattenhall, Kelsall, Tarvin &

Bunbury areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends

and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER

More parking spaces in Tarporley There are now 10 more marked parking bays in the public car park behind the Rising Sun, now that the car park has been relined. The Parish Council are pleased to have worked with Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWaC) to achieve this re-design, which was undertaken on a Sunday to reduce the disruption to the village. Now we have 85 spaces, including 3 for disabled badge holders, and a car park which is clearly marked out, with double yellow lines showing where not to park. The Parish Council is looking at ways to increase the public parking provision in the village, and has therefore paid for a survey of Draft Neighbourhood Plan During October the Neighbourhood Plan Group has been conducting an informal survey of its emerging Plan. A summary of the emerging Plan with a Response Form has been delivered to every household and business in the village. They can also be seen at www. tarporleyplan.org.uk under Downloads. Parish council vacancy Due to the retirement of a Parish Councillor, there is a vacancy on the Council. If you are interested in village matters and how things are run, please contact the clerk for details.

Christmas Lights Event To be held on Friday 5th December at 6pm under the Chestnut Tree, High Street. All welcome.

parking along the streets in the centre of the village and in the three public car parks. The survey, undertaken on a Tuesday in September from 7am to 7pm, will reveal how long people parked, for what purpose, and where they live. We will find out if it is true that people from the neighbouring areas use Tarporley as a Park and Ride car park, or if the local traders and businesses really do park all day along High Street, filling spaces which could be used by shoppers. Planning applications In recent months amended plans to two current large planning applications have been received by the Parish Council, and we also know of two, which at the time of writing, are in the pipeline for submission to CWaC: one is at Brickfield Farm, Rode St. This is all despite CWaC having a five year building land supply to meet housing need, and planning permission already granted to around 260 houses in Tarporley. The draft CWAC Local Plan and Tarporley’s draft Neighbourhood Plan target just 300 houses to be built in the 20-year period 2010- 2030. The current applications awaiting a decision from CWaC are 15 houses off Birch Heath Rd (No.14/03286/FUL) and 28 houses behind 22 and 22a High St (No. 14/03549/FUL) . The developers for the application for 100 houses off Rode St (No. 14/00841/OUT) have appealed to the Planning Inspector and an inquiry is to be held. The Plans can be viewed on the CWaC web site or Tarporley Library and comments sent to planning@ cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk or The Planning Service, CWaC Council, Wyvern House, The Drumber, Winsford CW7 1AH.

Diamond Peel Dermabrasion truly is the ultimate skin rejuvenation system

I

HAD been reliably informed that Diamond Peel Dermabrasion is tHe must-have facial treatment. So, always keen to try the very latest therapies, I paid a visit to tarporley Beauty Retreat to give it a try, writes Lynne Bradley. Dermabrasion is a word that conjors up all sorts of images of red faces and scrubbed, sore skin. However after an hour-long dermabrasion facial with Lisa with this fabulous machine I can report that this treatment is an absolute must for people of all ages. A truly relaxing and amazing experience. The Diamond Peel Dermabrasion, hailed by many specialists as the most effective and gentlest treatments yet, involves moving miniature abrasive diamond grain (contained in a small stainless steel head) across the skins surface, which helps stimulate cell renewal and collagen production. You can also use it on the body too. It is combined with a thorough cleanse, tone

mask and moisturise, leaving my skin, deeply exfoliated, and looking brighter. I noticed after just one treatment that the sun damage on my cheeks is hugely reduced. There was certainly no redness or irritation and I was back into work within half an hour, my skin looking more youthful and flawless. I was given expert follow up advice on how to look after my skin and advised how often would be best for me to have more treatments.

D f

This treatment is great for brides, if you are planning a special night out, before or after your holiday or even if you just feel your skin is looking dull

Evie is a star artist! Queen’s School pupil Evei Whorrall-Campbell, who recently achieved straight A*s in her A levels, has now been awarded another accolade. The talented artist has recently discovered that she was the top performer in the UK in her Pre-U Fine Art examination (A level Art equivalent). Evei, from Kelsall, is now starting her first year at Central St Martin’s Art School. Her efforts were formally acknowledged by Michael O’ Sullivan, CEO of Cambridge International Examinations, who said: “Topping the list of excellent candidates in a Cambridge Pre-U subject is a performance of the very highest calibre. I offer Evei sincere congratulations for this outstanding achievement.”

Head of Art Alistair Tucker added: “Evei is an incredibly talented artist and thinker. The way she approaches the subject shows such maturity and depth. We are all so proud of her achievements and can’t wait to hear what life holds for her next.”

Are we failing our older generation? Sadly the subject of poor care for the elderly especially those with dementia has been in the news again. Whilst the Care Quality Commission (CQC) says that many care homes are providing excellent care there are still far too many way below an acceptable standard. Inspectors visited 129 care homes and 20 hospitals across England. They found that 90 per cent had some aspect of poor or inconsistent care. They wrote: ‘It is likely that someone living with dementia will experience poor care at some point while living in a care home or being treated in hospital.’ A recent survey said that eight out of ten people find that choosing care for an older relative is one of the most stressful moments in life ranking it higher than getting divorced; choosing a school for their child; getting married or buying a house.

Become a ‘Bunbury Carer at Home’ If you are experienced in looking after elderly people, we want you to join our well respected team of carers.

But let’s keep positive People tell me that when faced with the difficult task of finding care for their loved one it is like walking into a maze blindfolded. For those who have relatives suffering with dementia, it is particularly challenging. I am constantly saying that with the right care and support, most people with dementia can remain living in their own home. In fact, it is much better to be at home and in familiar surroundings if you have dementia. I like to think that our carers are more like personal assistants and companions but with the skills, knowledge and sensitivity to look after elderly people in a dignified and respectful way.

Over the years we have looked after many people with Alzheimer’s, other dementias, Parkinson’s, severe mobility problems and of course those who are just frail due to their age. What about the cost? It is a myth that staying in your own home is more expensive that moving into a care home. We are members of the Society of Later Life Advisors and our specialist SOLLA consultant can advise you about paying for care at home. So remember there are choices and living in your own home for as long as possible is what most of us would prefer.

Celebrating 40 years of the Sandstone Trail Three days of celebrations saw communities from across Cheshire come together to mark the 40th anniversary of the Sandstone Trail. Local schools, environmental craft and education groups and historical actors all came together to bring alive parts of the modern and ancient history of the route. The first day saw Luke Neal, from the Meres & Mosses Landscape Partnership, walking much of the 34 mile trail from Whitchurch to Delamere visiting communities along the way, and carrying with him a hand-crafted giant white-faced darter dragonfly. The rare white-faced darter dragonfly has a special new link with the trail, as it has recently been reintroduced to Delamere Forest - after ten years of absence - from other healthier dragonfly populations at the southern tip of the trail near Whitchurch.

School from Merseyside joined The Earth Skills Project based in the village to present a musical and poetry show on the village green, in front of parents and visitors from the local Bolesworth Estate. The schools also joined local Harthill resident John Brown as The Earth Skills Project officially opened a new all-access section of the Sandstone Trail, leading out from the centre of the village. The final day of Luke’s trek saw an early morning visit to English Heritage’s Beeston Castle where a traditional medieval huntsman greeted visitors. The three day event came to a bustling finish at Delamere Forest, where the Sandstone Ridge Trust offered country crafts and costume demonstrations.

Luke joined pupils from Tushingham Primary School at Cheshire Wildlife Trust’s new Bickley Barn education centre near Malpas, as the youngsters learned about dragonflies and other creatures on the charity’s wildlife-friendly farm on the southern tip of the Sandstone Trail.

Gary Ball, Project Coordinator for the Sandstone Ridge Trust’s ‘Ridge, Rocks and Springs’ Heritage Lottery Funded Project said: “Working with other organisations and their volunteers has helped cement the value of heritage and conservation groups based along the Trail and we plan to continue this work along the Ridge in protecting and enhancing this special place for future generations.”

A day later, it was the turn of Harthill to join in the celebrations, as pupils from Bickerton Primary School and visiting Windsor Primary

The Sheriff’s in town! The High Sheriff of Cheshire Susan Sellers paid a visit to Tarporley CE Primary School on Tuesday 16th September. On arrival she was greeted by Head Teacher Mrs Forrester, house captains Dylan, Aaron, Abigail and Isobelle and Yr 6 School Council reps Alicia and James. She was then showed round the school and was particularly impressed with the buddy system which helps Reception children settle into starting school.

It was an inspirational event for the children, that brought history to life for them, as they heard about the way in which High Sheriffs have been chosen by the Queen. The High Sheriff has even blogged about her visit on her website www.highsheriffofcheshire.co.uk

The High Sheriff also showed a keen interest in the outdoor area and allotment and all the plans for the improvements that are happening to the outdoor play equipment with the recently awarded Lottery Grant.

Builders chip in for academy building The Delamere Church of England Academy has recently completed a £1.1 million redevelopment of the school building and Cheshire builder Wainhomes has supported the initiative by donating over £23,000 to the school, part of a £47,000 overall investment by the company. The Academy offers primary school places for 168 children and was classed as outstanding in its last Ofsted inspection. Stephen Docking, head teacher said: “We are very grateful for the support provided by Wainhomes, it’s great to see a local company backing a local school. The money gifted to us by Wainhomes will ensure that our children will continue to achieve and enjoy even greater learning opportunities.” Sharon Wood, sales director said: “We are keen to support local community initiatives in the areas where we build new homes. We are currently selling four and five

bedroom executive homes, two bedroom apartments and three bedroom mews homes at our Four Oaks development at Oakmere and it’s proving a popular address. “The Academy is close to Four Oaks and we have developed good relationships with the school during our time in the area. We were happy to play our part in the redevelopment of the Academy which includes an extension for a new school hall and new classrooms.” Wainhomes will be providing a further donation of just over £23,000 to the school later this year. This latest instalment will support improvements to the school’s ICT infrastructure as it upgrades and overhaul’s technology across the Academy. Joshua Cairns (8), Ella Stockton (9), Linda Collins (Wainhomes), Debbie Hargraves (Wainhomes), Lexi Bond (8) and Robert Cooper (7).

Hero policeman’s role in the Great War To mark 100 years since the First World War, and in the lead up to Remembrance Day, Cheshire Constabulary will be highlighting the officers who were conscripted to serve - some of whom gave their lives for their country.

John Wilson Police Constable 430 John Wilson was born at Oakmere, in 1890. He joined Cheshire Constabulary on 16th November 1912 having previously been employed as a tyre maker. After training he was posted to Wilmslow and in February 1914 he was transferred to Crewe. He resigned from the force in December 1914 to join the Army and enlisted as a Private in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps and fought on the Western Front. In 1917, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and joined 12th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. Promotion By October 1918 he had been promoted to Captain and was fighting in Italy with British, Italian, French and American Divisions to push the Austro-Hungarian army out of Italy. He was awarded the Military Cross and the Italian War Merit Cross for his gallantry during the crossing of the River Piave in northern Italy on 27-28 October 1918 - this

was one of the final battles of World War 1 which saw 30,000 of the enemy killed and over 400,000 taken prisoner. Splendid The citation for the award of the Military Cross reads: “At the forcing of the River Piave on 27th October 1918 and the following day, this Officer commanded his Company with the most conspicuous gallantry. “On the first day, especially, when his Company was subjected to very heavy machine gun fire he repeatedly rallied his men and kept them under perfect control. In particular just before reaching his objective, which was very strongly held by the enemy, he rallied and re-organised his Company and personally led the charge which resulted in the capture of the objective and over 200 prisoners and several machine guns. “But for Captain Wilson’s splendid initiative, leadership and personal courage, the casualties to his men would have been very severe, and the success of the whole attack endangered.” John continued in the Army for sometime after the war and did not return to the police. He died in 1954.

The Keys to Positive Li If you were to keep on living the same way, eating the same way, exercising the same way (if at all), where will your health and wellbeing be in a year from now? How about 3 years, from now? I urge you to ask yourself these questions. If you don’t like the idea of the answers you come up with, start by looking at the small things you can do which will improve your health in the next month and then in the next year. Now, I’m not saying that you need to become obsessive about fitness and nutrition. You can make a massive difference to the way your body looks and feels if you are prepared to stick to the fundamentals and focus on making constant, steady progress with your health habits. Now, lets talk about some simple steps you can take to towards positive lifestyle change. Start wItH Sleep Good sleep lays the foundations on which all other healthy habits are built on. When you have had a good night of sleep you have more energy

the next day to exercise and you will find it easier to make better nutrition choices as you are not battling low energy levels. Make an effort go to bed at the same time each night and avoid all electronic screens for at least 1 hour before you go to bed. The blue light waves emitted from electronic screens can disrupt our natural production of the sleep promoting hormone melatonin. Additionally, it is important to sleep in a completely darkened room. Aim to get a minimum of 7 hours sleep per night (8 to 9 hours is best if possible). The quality of your sleep must be good in order to get the maximum benefits. Your night’s sleep should be uninterrupted and you should wake up feeling refreshed. HydratIon for HealtH The majority of us are chronically dehydrated, without even realising it. Simply making an effort to drink more water can make a big difference to your overall wellbeing. Good hydration is vital for detoxification, energy and concentration. As we are exposed to more toxins now than ever before in human history, good hydration levels take on an even greater importance. Build up your water intake over 2 to 4 weeks to help your body adapt to the increase in hydration levels. At the end of the 4 weeks you will feel noticeably healthier, more energetic and you may also find your digestion improves. Get MovInG It’s vital to stop viewing exercise as a punishment for eating badly. Change your perspective so that you view exercise as something you for your body. We are designed for movement, meaning exercise is one of the best things we can do for our

Lifestyle Change By Daniel Jones BSc, Instinct Wellness bodies. If stress is a factor in your current lifestyle, exercise can be used as a potent way to alleviate it. Start with light exercise such as walking and then gradually build your way up to bodyweight strength exercises and then onto more intense exercises. Whenever possible focus on exercises that improve function and posture for maximum health benefits. Clean up your nutrItIon Make an effort to clean up your diet by moving away from processed foods and back towards real foods that our bodies are actually designed to eat. Don’t try to be perfect, start by improving one meal at a time. A good place to start is by focusing on improving the nutritional quality of your breakfasts, and then increasing your daily vegetable intake.

Make tHe deCISIon to Start now! It’s too easy to put off making positive lifestyle changes by waiting for the “right” time. However, there will never be the perfect time to start making changes to your lifestyle. Don’t feel like you have to overhaul your entire lifestyle overnight. Choose just one habit to address at a time. Remember that living healthily is a lifestyle. I’d rather you take things slowly and stick to your lifestyle improvement plan for the long term than dive in and quit because it was too hard. The good news is that the more positive changes you make to your lifestyle, the better you will feel and the more energy you will have to happily continue your journey towards optimal health.

health & beauty with Angela Bartlett

Q. What are antioxidant vitamins and how can they benefit my skin? A. They are vitamins A,C and E and powerfully interact with free radicals to help a variety of skin concerns including premature skin ageing, acne and sunburn response. We naturally have a complex in our skin which comprises these vitamins but as we age these levels are depleted, so the use of them in our skin care products is particularly helpful for our more mature clients and those interested in preventing premature skin ageing. The effectiveness of antioxidant vitamins in skin care products have been well established in many high quality studies, but the product formulations need to be intelligent. The vitamin levels have to be high enough to make a difference to the skin without causing irritation and also be in a highly absorbable form, so choose your products carefully. If you are unsure what to use always consult a skin are specialist.

Q. I love having gel varnish but I find that they are ruining my natural nails. What can I do? A . This is a problem that some clients can have and is most often associated not with having the gel varnish on the nails, but with the chemicals used for removing it. The remover can overly dry the nail plate causing flaking and splitting. Help is at hand as there is a new product available from the USA that can be used under gel varnish to protect the nails from damage and to repair any damage that has already been done. It works by penetrating the nail to bond onto the nail layers to give strength, flexibility and protection preventing dryness, splitting and flaking. You can find out more about this product on the treatment section of our website www.angelabartlett.co.uk

Monthly Newsletter - November 2014 Western Rural Police Team Message from Insp Keith Curbishley ‘Mischief night’ or ‘Halloween’ as it is increasingly known as, has grown and taken on quite a commercial basis in recent years. In hand with this development, local officers have developed new strategies to help manage new patterns of behaviour. Last year, window stickers were made available for residents to display in their windows if they did not want ‘trick or treaters’ to call and schools advised pupils to respect these. Local news for Tarporley l Parking issues were reported on Park Road when an elderly, visually impaired pedestrian struggled to get past a vehicle parked on the pavement. The individual was understandably reluctant to step onto the road and nor should they have to. We understand that the majority of Park Road is extremely narrow, however please consider whether pedestrians with pushchairs or wheelchairs can safely pass on the pavement by your parked vehicle. l Youths were reported playing football near the health centre on Park Road, which raised concerns as the windows of the health centre have been broken by footballs in the past. The youths were advised by the local PCSO of more appropriate locations to enjoy their match. We have also been made aware of several youths smoking cannabis behind the health centre. When patrols arrived there was no trace of the individuals, however the area will continue to be closely monitored. l A property on Eaton Lane in Eaton was broken into whilst the occupants were away on holiday. Please remember to ask any trusted neighbours to keep a close eye on your property if you are going away this Autumn. The progressively shorter daylight hours can make it easier for burglars to enter a property undetected. Consider the installation of security lighting to deter any potential offenders. l A quad bike was stolen from a farm in Darnhall on 23rd September. We have had several reported thefts of quad bikes in the local area this month. Please remember to secure any outbuildings where valuable bikes/quad bikes/machinery may be stored. PC Ged Gigg & PCSO Adam Miscikas, Dragon Hall Police Station 01606 362695 What we’ve done l Warning letters written to motorists who are continuously speeding through the 40mph section of Eaton Road, Eaton as they enter into the village. PC Gigg has used the speed gun further up the road to issue tickets. l The PCSO is liaising with highways to tackle the problem of cars causing congestion outside Eaton Primary School.

l PC Gigg has increased the level of patrolling around the community centre in order to deter the youths from congregating there. No further issues have been reported since. Local meetings l Tarporley Parish Council Meeting (Tarporley Community Centre): Monday 10th November at 7pm

WHAT’S ON

It seems The Suburbs are bringing more and more to Hoole. Not only did they bring a swanky new cocktail bar they are now winning awards too! This is no small award either. Ben Davies, from The Suburbs, entered the Bacardi Awards, biggest cocktail competition in the world and WON the national finals!

EATEry idEA We have got a little bit of inside information about the Suburbs sister Eatery aka ‘The Hollows’. They have brought you the cocktails and delicious lite bite meals to graze upon of a lunch and evening and now they want to give you a little bit more. Although nothing is yet set in stone the eatery idea I can imagine is only going to be welcomed by the people in Hoole. We will keep you informed of their plans and hopefully have some more news in coming editions.

His Golden Age cocktail, consisting of Bacardi, creme de banane, yellow chartreuse, burnt butter syrup, lime juice and an egg white impressed the judges. Ben told us “The drink itself takes influence from 1920’s Cuba and the cocktail culture that surrounded that ‘golden age’ of cocktail bartending and the Club de Cantineros. “I would like to think the drink builds a bridge between the cocktail golden age and the current cocktail revival with the use of old, new and homemade ingredients.”

Lastly I just have to mention about the lovely ‘Thank you’ evening the owners set up and organised. Mid October was a time for the owners to say a big thank you for the support Hoole people have given the new business. They are coming up to their year anniversary and couldn’t have been prouder of all they have achieved in such a short amount of time, but realise they couldn’t have done it without the community support. So as a thank you, they put on an evening of complimentary drinks - and what a lovely treat it was! The general relaxed yet sophisticated ambience yet again didn’t fail to delight, locals spent the evening enjoying easy conversation and sampling some of their gorgeous drinks, which tasted all the more enjoyable as management picked up the tab!

Jam and Jerusalem c When Abigail Webb moved into the area she was surprised to learn the village didn’t have a WI group and after suggesting the idea to friends, she received an enthusiastic response. She created the Tarporley WI Facebook page, which now has over 60 members, and has lots of useful information. Many ladies shared why they wanted to get involved in the WI; to learn new skills, to meet new friends and to have fun.

After an initial get-together in September, the Tarporley Women’s Institute was officially formed on 1st October. The first meeting was attended by over 40 ladies, who enjoyed a taste and talk session on chocolate by guest speaker Sue Roberts. As well as the chocolate tasting, they also enjoyed tea and home made cakes. President Abbie Webb said: “It was fantastic to see so many ladies attending our first WI meeting, we had a great evening with lots of fun and laughter. “Due to the diverse age range of our members, from 25 to 80, I am keen to ensure that Tarporley WI caters for all interests and activities and the committee members are now planning lots of exciting, interesting and fun activities for 2015.” Meetings will be held on the first Wednesday of every month at 8:15pm in Tarporley Royal British Legion.

She will be giving a talk and demonstration in belly dancing, the history/ origin of the dance, the costumes and the music. Some ladies will also be selling crafts to raise money for the Royal British Legion for Remembrance Sunday. The first meeting is free, so why not join us on 5th November!

Regular readers will by now be getting quite familiar with Carol and Bill and their family but this month I’d like to introduce you to their very good friends Jill and David. Like their friends, Jill and David were in full time employment, and had two children, albeit a little younger. Both children were at school, the eldest Clare was studying towards A Levels and Liam at 14 had turned overnight it seemed into someone unable to string together more than a grunt by way of conversation and they were seriously concerned that his fingers would need to be surgically removed from his X Box control. The usual worries of teenage children aside, Jill and David had reasonable income from their respective employers, although most of it was used to meet the day to day bills. They still had a mortgage, had money purchase pension arrangements with their employers which also included some death in service life insurance benefits, they tried to take a holiday every year, and had managed to put money aside each month in readiness for university fees. In short, they were jogging along quite nicely, a lottery win of course would always be welcome, but they felt they had things reasonably well covered. You never quite know what fate has in store for you though, and 2 years ago Jill was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 48. If you’ve been in this position, or have someone close to you who has, you will know that the first reaction is usually shock and disbelief, closely followed by anger and fear. Jill’s treatment consisted of 6 months chemotherapy, followed by radiotherapy and finally surgery, and she would be unable to return to work for 12 months. Jill’s company were very understanding, they had provision for 3 months sick pay, but were quite small and didn’t have the ability to pay her for any

longer than this. Now as well as the worry over her treatment and recovery, was the financial worry of meeting their outgoings from only one salary, without having to dig into the “university” pot for the children. 5 years ago, Jill and David had moved house and had just taken on additional mortgage borrowing. They knew they needed life insurance to cover the mortgage debt and their friends Carol and Bill had suggested they have a chat with me. We talked about why life insurance was important to them, neither wanted to feel that the other was left paying a mortgage if the other were to die before the end of the term. They hadn’t given any thought to what would happen if one or the other developed a serious illness which might affect their ability to work. Although at the time, it meant spending more than they had anticipated, both decided that they would include critical illness on their mortgage life policy. By the time Jill was undertaking her first chemotherapy treatment, the outstanding balance on their mortgage had been fully repaid, which also freed up an additional £500 per month as they no longer had mortgage repayments to make. Jill would be the first to say that she would rather have not had cancer and still be paying the mortgage, but on the issue of her health she really didn’t have a choice, she did though have a choice 5 years ago, when she and David decided to include critical illness cover on their protection policy.

As always, Jill and David are not real clients, although their story is factual.

If you would like further information on how you can chose to protect your family, without obligation, please call us on 01948 840738 or 075959 28907. We look forward to hearing from you. Your home may be repossessed if you don’t keep up the payments on your mortgage

FOOTBALL TALK...

TARPORLEY VICS FC

Vic’s rely on hot shot Carl Tarporley Vics First Team have played one League Game, two J A Walton Challenge Cup games and two District Cup Games in recent weeks. The League game v Grappenhall FC was well contested against a side that currently lie in second place in the League. Dan Ball and Carl Smith scored the goals; Carl has now scored six goals from his nine games to date in what is turning into an impressive debut season as a Tarporley Vics player Tarporley Vics First Team has yet to record a win in this Inter-Divisional J A Walton Challenge Cup. A defeat to Daten FC and a draw against Mersey Valley FC were all the Vics could record in the past month. With two games against Cuddington FC and Middlewich Town FC to come nothing other than victories are required if Tarporley Vics are to progress into the next round of this competition The Chester & District FA Challenge Cup saw Tarporley Vic’s First Team up against Chester Nomads First Team. The tie was

well contested and Tarporley seized the early initiative with a goal from Carl Smith, however two late goals from Nomads resulted in a win for the Team who play in a higher grade of Football than Tarporley Vics. The Crewe & District FA Challenge Cup saw Tarporley Vic’s First Team defeat Mary Dendy 2 – 0 and they now progress into the second round draw. Unfortunately they will not be joined “in the hat” by the Reserves, who were beaten 3 – 2 by Alsager Town’s Reserve side. The Reserves have however made a good start to their League campaign this season. They have won two, drawn two and only lost one of the five games played to date. Training is on Thursday Nights at the High School from 6:30pm to 8pm. Please check with Mike Brereton or Andy Williams re this Training. Fading Autumn Colour Gardening by Janet Heath

November colour comes from fruit, berries, foliage and bark and we need to look more closely at individual plants to appreciate their beauty. Fragrance is provided by one of my favourite shrubs, Viburnum bodnantense Dawn which will flower on and off until March. How many plants can you think of that will give such a long period of interest? The honeyed scent greets me every time I leave or arrive at the house. Bark comes into its own in winter with the white bark of Betula utilis jacquemontii, the greenand white striated bark of Acer grosseri which will be complimented by the copper bark of Prunus serrula. If you have room for any of these trees ensure they are planted well away from buildings to prevent root damage to property. Underplant with

Cornus alba Elegantissima with red stems in winter and green and cream foliage in summer. Some grasses still look great in late autumn especially in the early morning light. Miscanthus sinensis grasses have red bronze or silvery tassels depending on variety. This year deciduous trees and shrubs have been showing autumn tints earlier due to a mild winter and plants coming into leaf early. Parthenocissus is a very vigorous climber and needs keeping under control but if you have a blank wall it will give a green wall in spring and summer then colour in shades of red in autumn before the leaves fall. The red leaves contrast well with variegated ivy. Late autumn is the time to prepare your garden for winter.

Tender plants such as salvias, fuschias and agapanthus need mulch around the roots with a layer of well rotted manure or compost to protect from freezing. Acers that need pruning should be pruned in winter rather than spring as they can bleed from cuts in spring. Other overgrown shrubs can be cut back after leaves have fallen so you can see the structure clearly. Prunus species are best pruned in late spring and early summer as they are less likely to get silver leaf disease. Wrap planted pots in bubble wrap to help prevent the plant roots freezing. Cut back unsightly foliage and dig out annuals then if you have the inclination, mulch all your borders with a layer of compost or manure to rot down over winter.

Peckforton and Beeston WI We had a very amusing talk at our meeting in October when Rev Lynne Morris entertained us with some of her experiences as a vicar. Lynne trained as a nurse but several years into her career she decided to change course and become a priest. She told us many entertaining stories including, blessing a baby at the till in a shop, baptising children with very peculiar name combinations, being mistaken as a ‘kissogram’ on a train, and people being amazed that vicars do their own shopping, go swimming or to pop concerts. Join us at one of our meetings and hear one of our excellent speakers. Tattenhall Gardening Society Our next illustrated talk by Carol Madden will take place on Wednesday 12th November at 7.30pm in the Barbour Institute entitled ‘Wonderful Winter’. Carol will be bringing plants for sale. Please note that this meeting will start at the slightly earlier time of 7.30pm, as we will be holding our famously brief AGM prior to the talk. We would also like to invite you to make nominations for the committee. Please hand in your nomination slips before 7.30 on the night. Visitors are always welcome to attend the meetings. Yearly membership costs £12.-- for single and £17.-- for joint membership. Visitors £3, Tattenhall Allotment Association members £2. Bunbury WI The group meets at 7.30pm on the 2nd Thursday of every month in the Bunbury Pavilion. Bunbury has celebrated 85 years of WI history this year and, with increasing membership, and interest levels heightened by the recent filming in the village of Julie Summer’s book “Jambusters”, the Committee are hopeful of many more successful years in the life of our WI. The 2015 programme of events has been finalised and will be published before the end of the year. For information call Lesley Moore on 01829 262514 or simply come along. Did you spot her? She is on the middle of page 41.
