MARATHON MAN WELL done to Tarvin’s Gareth Hughes who was attempting to complete 31 marathons in 31 days, culminating in the particularly vicious Snowdonia Marathon. The vexed issue of parking in Tarporley comes to the forefront at a special public drop in event organised by the parish council in November. We also have pictures from the Tarvin Apple Pressing Day, details of how a Tarporley woman is helping out in Eastern Europe, what’s on at the Barbour Institute, a successful year for the Bunbury Mill and news of the annual Tarporley bonfire and fireworks show. There’s also the regular features, including Angela Bartlett, the what’s on guide, business directory and health and beauty. LOOKING FOR A MORE FULFILLING JOB?
Our carers are the backbone to our service but being a carer can be hard work and stressful. For almost 50 years the Bunbury Agency has been helping families remain living in their own homes. Our longevity and success is largely attributed to our invaluable team of dedicated carers who look after our clients with dignity, respect and understanding. If you believe that elderly people should retain their independence, then register with Bunbury Agency. We like to treat our carers as we do our clients.
Make a difference to someone else’s life! Live in Care We like our carers to be able to look after at least 1 client for a week or a fortnight on a regularly basis. We are happy for you to schedule your work around your personal life. Your wage reflects the level of care required. Companionship plays a very important part of the job, and over a period of time our carers often become part of the family.
Daily Care There is a minimum call of 1 hour. We do not do ‘pop in – pop out’ visits. You may even have time for a chit chat over a cup of tea! We do not like our carers to be rushed and will give you plenty of time to arrive at your next client. Unless there is an emergency you will always be booked with your regular clients. We want you to make the most of your skills and really develop the relationship with your clients.
Due to an increased demand, we are urgently looking to recruit experienced Live-in and Daily carers. Live in care from £600 per week; Weekend care from £100 per 24 hours Overnight care from £80 per night Daily care - £12 per hour weekdays; £15 per hour at weekends Travel allowance 45p per mile

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL Newsletter
Public drop-in event on car parking in the village On Saturday morning, 4th November alongside the Country Market, Councillors will be available in the Committee Room of the Community Centre to share what’s happening on car parking in the village, listen and respond to the increasing concerns being voiced by residents and businesses. Formal consultation led by CWaC on time limited parking on part (not all) of the High Street will be underway, plus CWaC is planning to have published its Parking Strategy. The latter should mean we have some idea of where our issues stack in the Council’s priorities, together with the timeline and process for making any progress.
Car parking has been a longstanding issue in the village, even before housing increased by 25%, and more businesses (and their staff) arrived and successful schools expanded. Something has to be done to increase parking capacity substantially. We believe there are options and, importantly, we mustn’t miss any opportunities as major developments continue to impact the village. In the near term, there is the additional challenge of the Royal British Legion development taking that car park out of action for a period, the Daffodil Field development starting off the High Street/ Rising Sun Car park, plus the building works to expand the Primary School. We have written to CWaC
12 To advertise call 01244 350398
and presented a full Situation Report, and have now met with Senior CWaC staff to ensure they better understand the issues and opportunities we see. We hope to get some feedback before 4 November. Inevitably there will be no easy and cheap solutions, however CWaC highlighted the use of creative ‘pop-up’ car parks in Chester for example. In Tarporley, progress will require willing Landowners and commitment to finding funding solutions. The Parish Council has already signalled its preparedness to use some of its modest cash reserves but we acknowledge that this will only be a fraction of the funding any scheme will require. Come along on 4th November to give your input and get an update.

Parish Council Meetings Second Monday of each month (except August) in the Craven Room (the downstairs room accessed from the rear car park) of the Community Centre. Each meeting starts at 7pm with an Open Forum, during which members of the public can address the whole Council on matters of concern to them. At 6.30pm, prior to this meeting, the Parish Council holds a surgery where members of the public can talk one to one with individual councillors on an informal basis. Thank you, Rotary! The efforts of Rotary Club volunteers on 30 September doing a village tidy-up is very much appreciated. Thank you. For all the efforts to ensure follow-up with the right agencies that do help keep the village in generally good shape, ultimately some campaign efforts by volunteers are needed. Grants and Donations We are pleased to confirm that we were able to support all the 8 village organisations applying for Grants this year with up to £250 each. In addition, we were also particularly excited at the formation of ‘Tarporley Remembers 2018’ to commemorate 100years since the World War One Armistice. The Parish Council resolved to give financial support as the group runs a series of events and activities to mark this important centenary year.
Parish Council Meetings Would you like to know what meetings are taking place with the Parish Council? Visit www.tarporley.org.uk and click on the meetings calendar to find out what meetings are taking place and when. New Parish Councillor And finally the Parish Council voted unanimously to co-opt Tina Royles onto the Council at their October meeting. Welcome Tina to being a Parish Councillor.

Marathon man Gareth’s gruelling month WELL done to Gareth Hughes who is attempting to run 31 marathons in 31 days. Gareth, who lives in Tarvin, started at the end of September and hopes to culminate his efforts with the gruelling Snowdonia Marathon on 28th October. What makes it even tougher is that he is having to get up at 3am every day to run the 26 miles – and then complete a full day’s work! Gareth is no stranger to endurance events having competed in the UK Ironman and finished several marathons in the past. Wife Helen said: “He just likes to push himself and wanted to do something that would really test him.” He has already raised £2,000 for three charities, including the Cheshire Autism Practical Support (CHAPS) and two charities in South Wales where he works during the week. He has set up a Virgin Money page ‘Challenge 31’ and people are welcome to donate at any time. Charity coffee at the Fox and Barrel The Fox and Barrel pub, in Cotebrook, is doing a free coffee hour during November between 11am and 12noon to raise funds for Saint Luke’s Hospice and the Cotebrook Village Hall. People are able to give donations for the coffee to those good causes.

Tarvin’s pressing engagement Ignoring dire warnings about the weather there was a good turnout for the 3rd annual apple pressing event which took place in Tarvin’s Community Woodland. Families from the village and further afield brought their apples in bags, buckets and wheelbarrows to be sliced, chopped, pulped and pressed into delicious apple juice. Willing helpers, young and old, made the event into a good fun day for all, where the children could show their creative skills using woodland materials, with hot dogs, burgers and hot and cold drinks providing appropriate refreshment. Supported by the Tarvin Wildlife Watch and Cheshire Wildlife Trust, the organisers of the event from Tarvin’s own Woodland Trust were rewarded for their hard work by knowing that they had once again tapped into the spirit of village togetherness in their award-winning woodland, given an 8th Green Flag in 2017.

HEALTH & BEAUTY By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing
The benefits of charcoal By Angela Bartlett, Owner Sensoria Beauty Q. I’m hearing about charcoal as an ingredient everywhere at the moment. Why is this and what are the benefits? A. When I was training as a Beauty Therapist we would add charcoal into clay based masks to absorb impurities, along with ingredients such as sulphur and kaolin, and it’s been used since Egyptian days for these benefits. So why has it recently made such a big come back and what’s different about it? Well, ’new’ charcoal has been specially treated to enhance its ability to absorb impurities which makes it even more effective. And it’s not just in products for blemished and oily skins any more; it’s being used to absorb pollution particles too, so it acts as a good anti-ageing ingredient by protecting the skin from free radical damage.
Q. Is there anything I can add to my regular facial treatments to give my skin a boost and combat ageing? A. It is good to add variety into your skin care regime and Autumn is the perfect time to add some IPL (intense pulsed light) skin rejuvenation into your treatments. The pulses of light create heat in the tissues to stimulate collagen production to help reduce lines and to assist the skin in being able to maintain moisture levels. It also helps to even out areas of darker pigmentation (age spots) and fade small red veins giving a more consistent skin colour resulting in a look of youthfulness to the skin. Please note that for safety and efficacy a patch test needs to be carried out for this treatment. Read more about the benefits of IPL for skin rejuvenation on the blog page at www.sensoriabeauty.co.uk

Visitor numbers are up at Bunbury Mill By the end of September, an estimated 1,762 people had visited the mill and visitor centre this year - an increase of 24% on last year’s figure. Among the visits this year have been local primary school children learning about life in Victorian times, as well as working in the mill, making bread, and a range of craft activities. The mill trust will receive grants totalling £11,900 from WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental) to replace the rotten windows in the Victorian mill building, buy new wooden cogs which the volunteers will fit to the mill’s gear wheels, and replace the old linotile flooring in the visitor centre.

High time you used Zero Dry Time! You may have noticed a new advertiser in the magazine so I thought I would tell you a little about myself, writes Steve Jones Zero Dry Time is a Tarvin based business covering most of Cheshire West. I retired after 30 years service with Cheshire Police and retrained with the country’s number one dry carpet, upholstery and hard floor cleaners to take on this opportunity. You may wonder how carpets could be deep cleaned, sanitised, deodorised, stains removed and immediately walk dry but I guess the clue is in the name. The Zero Dry Time cleaning process means your furniture can easily be moved to clean underneath for a thorough job and your carpets will smell wonderful, be left with stain protection and safe for you, your pets or children to use straight away.
Customer service and attention to detail are at the heart of my business. It is perfect for commercial customers who can’t afford any down time waiting for carpets to dry such as medical settings, offices, nurseries etc. Please check out my Facebook page: Zero Dry Time Cheshire West and I hope you will agree the results look very impressive. I use the latest techniques/equipment and offer a “one stop shop” for ALL of your cleaning needs from leather and fabric upholstery to hard floors including stone, slate, marble, tiles, grout, vinyl, Karndean and Amtico. I can even carry out dustless wooden floor refinishing at a fraction of the price of sanding. I am happy to give a free no obligation demo at your home or business for any of my services…. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. I’d like to ask you a question. Where is your financial plan taking you? If you’re looking at the destination board and can only see a Monarch flight which has been cancelled or a Ryanair flight which still might be, it’s probably time to book a meeting with your travel agent and find out what other flights are available. Sometimes, when we book a holiday, it’s a bit of a last minute thing, we need a break and just want to find a cheap flight and a bit of sunshine. I’m the world’s worst for this, as I usually wait until I’m completely exhausted before thinking, I have to stop for a week. Then I’ll just look online, book something quickly and deal with the resultant problems as they occur (yes I have managed to fly back to a different airport to the one I departed from, when of course there is no car!!).
Inheritance Tax Planning, which I touched on in last month’s article, or the issue of paying for Long Term Care as and when its needed.
When I’ve planned a special trip though, I have taken my time over the planning. I’ve written down the must have, none negotiable list. I’ve sat with a travel agent and discussed the flight options, the kind of accommodation I want, and whether it’s realistic to get from point A to point B in a day, or should I allow more time. I’ve had a budget to work to, but have known that I’ve had some wriggle room on this if I needed it.
• Are there different flight paths you could take?
Whilst I might take the occasional quick leap into the unknown when I need a break, the more permanent break of retirement needs far more thought and consideration. As does the issue of
These are the areas where I really would encourage you not to enter the departure lounge without looking at the destination board. It’s the destination board which should be important enough to spend a considerable amount of time on. • What are your non negotiables?
• What does the budget need to be? • Is there some flexibility on your arrival time or is this absolutely fixed? I call this “thinking in ink”, write a list, and then make an appointment with a specialist who can put together a workable itinerary for you. Do feel free to give us a call, as ever without obligation, on 01948 840738 or 075959 28907, ideally before cancelled flights start to be the only option on your destination board.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
FLAMING NOVEMBER COLOUR With the flowers coming to an end for the year, it is time to appreciate the leaves changing colour to yellow, orange and red and berries on shrubs. In sheltered areas where Acers can thrive in cool damp soil, their leaf colour can be stunning in autumn. I have an Acer palmatum Orange Dream, in a pot. In spring the foliage is lime green but in autumn the leaves are edged with orange red than gradually deepen over the days. If you have space for a large tree in the garden and want autumn colour then try a Liquidamber. Some are huge trees but Liquidamber orientalis will grow slowly to 6m tall with yellow and orange foliage in autumn. Plant well away from buildings, at least the ultimate height away, to prevent tree root damage to structures. Last month I suggested a striking grass, Miscanthus sinensis Flamingo for autumn colour. As the weather cools, this grass takes on orange reddish hues as can be seen from the photo. Berries do well at keeping colour going on into winter and this year is superb. Look around as you walk to the shops and you are likely to see gleaming Pyracantha shrubs loaded with berries

in red, orange and yellow. Another desirable plant is Callicarpa or Beauty Berry. The variety Profusion is best for berries which are clusters of purple dotted up the stems. Needs a moisture retentive soil in sun or light shade and berries best after a hot summer. This year Berberis are berrying well with clusters of scarlet berries which make a stunning contrast on the purple leaved varieties. As leaves fall, and if you have space for a leaf compost heap, clear them up and put them in their own heap or damp into plastic bin liners, preferably with grass cuttings to help them rot down. Leaves and grass make the most delicious compost (from the plants point of view!) which is usually weed free. Dig out any vegetables that have finished for the season and add a layer, 3ins deep, of well rotted manure onto the top of the bed to be taken down into the soil over winter. Make sure you have cleared all leaves from around roses and cut off any that show signs of disease. These spore based moulds stay in the soil ready to emerge in the next season so keeping the area clear is important. Finally, plant tulip bulbs, your last chance for a display next year!
