Hear all about it! Ear infections are seen frequently at Birch Heath Vets. Long, flappy, hairy ears make dogs more prone to this condition, as dirt and moisture easily become trapped within the ear canals. Dogs which enjoy swimming are also susceptible to ear problems. For preventative care, the nursing staff at Birch Heath will advise how to clean ears; most dogs love it! Persistent scratching, foul odour, waxy discharge, redness and irritation are all symptoms which may indicate an ear infection. If you notice any of the above signs, call 01829 733777 to make an appointment, as unhappy ears make unhappy pets!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Tarporley, Tattenhall, Kelsall, Tarvin &

Bunbury areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends

and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Duddon St. Peter's C E Primary School

This term Treetops Foundation Stage Unit at Duddon St. Peter’s Primary School is home to one of the world’s most loved monsters. In true Treetops style the teachers, pupils and parents gathered together for a ‘Gruffalo' stay and play day to welcome their new starters. The children had great fun creating their own woodland creatures on the interactive whiteboard as well as doing a variety of Gruffalo themed activities including painting masks, modelling salt dough faces and making yummy crispy cakes which they each got to take home. The day was rounded off with a reading of the award winning story which saw the children as quite as mice as they followed the adventurous journey through the deep dark wood.

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER HEDGES AND TREES OVERHANGING THE HIGHWAY Tarporley Parish Council regularly receive complaints about hedges and trees on private property that have been allowed to overhang pavements and roadways. This makes life difficult for pedestrians, particularly those walking with children/with a pushchair, walking with a walking stick or in a wheelchair, who are forced to walk on the verge or in the road to get past the vegetation. Overgrowth of rural hedges can obstruct visibility at junctions and on bends, increasing the risk of accidents. Now that the bird nesting season is over we’re asking everyone to look at the hedges and trees on their property and check that they have not encroached onto the footway or carriageway. If they have, it is your responsibility to cut them back – and take into account a bit of ‘growing’ room for next year too. Thank you. For more information please visit: www.cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk and follow the links to Residents / Planning / Environment / Trees. DOG FOULING Evidence, such as a photograph or a witness statement, is needed to be able to fine people who do not pick up after their dog once it has fouled the pavement, footpath or playing field. We understand why people do not want to confront the dog owner if they see this happen. To help us gather evidence, if you know of any instances, please complete the form below and post or email it to The Parish Clerk – contact details on the next page. We will get the dog wardens involved. There’s a stream at Bunbury Watermill! Bunbury Watermill hosted an Online Field Trip ‘Oaty Porridge’ as part of The Tesco Eat Happy Project, broadcast live and streamed into schools across the UK using Google hang outs. The live lesson, all about Oaty Porridge, was presented by Sam Mann, and made in collaboration with oats producer Mornflake, and can be viewed at www.eathappyproject. com/online-field-trips/ oaty-porridge. Other hosts were Peter Robinson, volunteer Bunbury miller, and Richard Jones, an expert on oats. Children from four primary schools in Cardiff, Barry, Herefordshire, and Lanarkshire took part in the programme. As well as discussing the history of oats and oat milling, and the nutritional benefits (and pleasures) of eating oaty products, the programme featured a detailed explanation

of workings of the historic Victorian water mill. Says Peter: “It was an exciting experience taking part in this commendable series, and a real pleasure to have the production team at our lovely mill. Even the ducks cooperated!” The mill is operated by volunteers of the Bunbury Watermill Trust, and is open for visits on Sunday afternoons until the end of October, and at any time by arrangement for group visits by schools, photographic and art groups, college students, U3A, WI, and so on. See the web site www.bunburymill.com for info.

Apple pressing day a The Tarvin Community Woodland Trust organised an Apple Pressing Day, set in the woodland area between the village and the A51 by-pass. People were invited to come along to join in the fun and bring their apples to be pressed - but were advised to drink the resulting juice on the same day to prevent unexpected explosions of bottles as fermentation kicked in! The organisers need not have worried about the success of the event as it was estimated that some 200 people attended during the day and joined in the pressing and the general fun. Supported also by the Cheshire Wildlife Trust and the Tarvin Wildlife Watch there were hot dogs, burgers, teas and coffee, apple bobbing, an apple peeling contest, and lots of woodlandbased craft activities to be enjoyed by young and old.

The Tarvin Woodland Trust was set up in 2008 under the enthusiastic guidance of Jim Grogan, now sadly dead, and today the roughly 1km stretch of woodland walk with a good path and occasional seating is maintained by a dedicated band of local volunteers. Their efforts are to be rewarded later this month by the presentation of an amazing sixth successive Green Flag award, the quality mark given for public open spaces which are voluntary-maintained. Not visited the Woodland Walk? Access, with some limited parking, is available from the bottom of Hockenhull Lane, the bottom of Broomheath Lane, or via Townfield Lane from the car park at the top of the George V playing fields.

BUNBURY IS EXPANDING ITS TEAM OF DAILY CARERS Do you know anyone who is struggling to manage at home? If so………. Help is at hand For just £12, you could have someone kind and caring to look after you at home for a whole hour. Whether you need help with washing and dressing or just some general help around the house and a nice home cooked meal, having this extra support could make all the difference.

A recent article in the Telegraph highlighted the fact that the number of frail elderly and disabled people receiving care at home has been slashed by a third in just five years. This is of course as a result of local authority budget cuts and just at a time when the number of older people has been growing almost twice as fast as the general population. This article goes on to say ‘Councils have been quietly tightening their eligibility criteria for care, rationing it to all but those in the most severe need’. Recent research concluded that the contraction in care services in the past five years alone is “unprecedented” and warns that further reductions are likely. Last year there was a lot of publicity about 15 minute call outs. As I have said before, I certainly could not get washed, dressed, have breakfast and be ready for work in that time.

If you would like to discuss the many options available, please contact us on 01829 260280 to make an appointment.

For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. precarious scramble across FULLYA INSURED dusty beams, in hand; grabbing WITH OVERtorch 30 YEARS what’sEXPERIENCE needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

health & beauty with Angela Bartlett

exfoliating By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing

Q. What type of scrub or exfoliator should I use on my skin? A. Scrubs and exfoliants have become very sophisticated. Long gone are the days when you skin care therapist would recommend a coarse, gritty scrub to remove surface dead skin cells. Formulations are now made to be more powerful to get the best results but less aggravating to be more gentle to the skins surface to give smoother, fresher skin. I have just written an article on the new types of ingredients found in scrubs and exfoliators which can be found in the blog section at www.sensoriabeauty. co.uk Come and visit us if you would like to try a free sample of an exfoliant that will best suit your skin, just quote ‘Tarporley Talk’. Q. When it’s cloudy outside do I still need sunscreen? A. Anyone who has received skin care advice from me or my team will know the answer to this question, which is a big ‘Yes, you do!’. Photo damage (from exposure to ultraviolet radiation) doesn’t just occur during the summer months or when the sun is out. Low level, long term exposure to light- even through glass windows and sometimes even from fluorescent tubing, damages your skin leading to premature ageing. So apply broad spectrum sunscreen every day and reapply regularly to reduce photo ageing by approximately 90 per cent.

POINT OF VIEW: TARPO

Royal British Legion should also remember Tarporley before selling Last month’s Tarporley Talk carried an article written by Ernest Boynes implying that the Legion’s land in Tarporley must be sold. This is wrong, writes David Press. The Royal British Legion did not have to sell the land and in doing so has acted with scant regard to its own Royal Charter and with disregard for the people of Tarporley. The land was owned by the Royal British Legion under the terms of a Trust which states the purpose to be: ”.. to permit the same to be used in perpetuity under the name of Tarporley Branch of The Royal British Legion for the purpose of pursuing particularly but not exclusively in the area of Tarporley and its surrounding district all or any of the charitable aims and objectives of the Trustee which are expressed in its Royal Charter” Object 3(e) of the RBL Charter is to promote public benefit by the commemoration of those who have died whilst on active service with the Armed Forces of the United Kingdom. It would therefore have been entirely in accordance with the RBL’s charter and in accordance with the terms of the trust for the land to have been dedicated as a Centenary Field in commemoration of the 1914 War. It is somewhat shameful that the RBL appear to have given no consideration to using this

land for this purpose. The RBL are leading partners in the Centenary Fields initiative which exhorts landowners to dedicate their open spaces to be safeguarded as a living remembrance to those who lost their lives in World War I, yet they seemed unprepared to dedicate their own land, or even to think about the possibility! Instead they have sold the land to a property developer, Enlighten Developments (Tarporley) Ltd. This was the only purchaser offering to buy the entire site outright. Other potential purchasers offered only options on the bowling green and allotments, subject to planning permission for development. The RBL have sold the land and will receive additional payments if planning permission is obtained. Planning permission should not be forthcoming. The bowling green and allotments are identified in Tarporley’s draft Neighbourhood Plan as protected green spaces. The Neighbourhood Plan had already completed its formal consultation before the sale, so the RBL have proceeded knowing that they are acting against the wishes of the community and gambling on the unlikely outcome of planning permission. We can’t know what price the RBL obtained, but it’s quite

52 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.tarporleytalk.com

PORLEY ALLOTMENTS

possible that they have received less money for the bowling green and allotments than if they’d been prepared to sell in separate parcels and let the community bid for the protected green spaces. Indeed they could have raised more money for their beneficiaries and had a Centenary Field. Ernest Boynes’ article is also misleading about the history of the site. There are different histories to the three parts of the site: bowling green; allotments; clubhouse and carpark. In 1926, when the bowlers lost the use of the green at their local pub, the landowner, Mr. Marshall Brooks, made the land available for them to use as a bowling green for a peppercorn rent. They built the green and a bowling clubhouse and operated independently of the RBL until 1981, when they changed their name to Tarporley RBL Bowling club for the purposes of entering competitions and applying for grants. The land for an RBL clubhouse was provided for a peppercorn rent in 1926 and then in 1966 the site occupied by the clubhouse and car park was gifted to the RBL. The field in between the RBL clubhouse

and bowling green was used for community activities, and then rented by a pig farmer until 1973. In 1974 Mr Marshall Brooks offered the land for allotments at a peppercorn rent. This was used by Tarporley Gardeners Association until 1986/7. It was not until 1986/7 that ownership of the bowling green and allotments was gifted to the Tarporley Branch of the RBL. Tarporley RBL Allotment Holders was founded and a rule was made that all plot holders were members of both the Club and the Branch of the RBL and that exservicemen had priority over others. In 1999 ownership of all three parcels of land were transferred to RBL headquarters in London. It is reasonable to presume that the gift of the allotment and bowling green land was never intended to raise funds for the RBL coffers. Even the terms of the trust in 1999 declare that it should be primarily in pursuit of RBL objectives in and around Tarporley. A Centenary Field would have conformed with this, but I rather suspect that most of the money raised from the sale will end up in London and certainly not Tarporley.

Rhian does the family proud At the tournament finals of Tarvin Tennis Club Rhian Perry kept the family name to the forefront by being successful in both doubles events. With partner Amit Tauro in the Mixed and partner Jane Wilson in the Ladies’ Doubles Rhian ensured the Perry name would again be inscribed on a trophy. Grandad Alf still plays a mean, crafty game, father John is a winner of two singles and three Men’s Doubles titles, while brother Jack also has a doubles title. In other hard-fought matches Peter Nosworthy stretched his record of singles wins to 15 out of the last 17 years, this time against a gallant Graham Bunting, the seventh different challenger to try to unseat the champion. It was a different story in the Men’s Doubles,

however, where Peter and partner Chris Lowe lost to Daniel Sherwin and Jonathan Palmer, a first time winner as was Rhian above. Wendy Rae came out of self-imposed singles retirement to record a seventh singles title, defeating last year’s winner, Sarah Mitchell. Sarah and partner Shanti Pinto, were the defeated pair in the Ladies Doubles too. There was further reversal of fortune in the last and probably hardest fought of the matches, the Mixed Doubles, where in three sets Rhian and Amit, as mentioned, finally overcame Daniel and Barbara Francis, another past winner. Overall, another enjoyable and wellorganised Finals Day for Tarvin Tennis Club, with credit due to both players and supporters.

Rhian alert at the net as Amit serves.

As the volatility which afflicted the markets in August, continued into September I thought it would be worthwhile reminding readers of a few market related facts which tend to bear out that what we are seeing at the moment are more shakes than quakes! Firstly, you can’t expect to invest in the stock market and think for a minute that it will only ever go straight up. Volatility is not an “if” but a “when” and it’s what we do when it happens that really matters. So what have I done? Well, I’ve just invested in my 2015/16 ISA allowance, and even if we haven’t seen the last of the current round of volatility, buying into a stocks and shares ISA now is certainly cheaper than it was in April, so I’ve purchased my ISA. I’ve also made my annual pension contribution, something else I’ve been meaning to do since the start of the tax year, but just hadn’t got round to it. I’d like to say that I cleverly predicted a drop in share prices and waited until making these contributions, but truthfully, I don’t have a crystal ball and have never pretended to have! This brings me on to my second point; it’s the time you are in the markets for, rather than the timing of entering them. Of course, I could just have easily made these contributions, as many have, earlier in the year and have seen the value of these contributions fall. With the two main uncertainties in the markets at the moment, of slowing Chinese economy and the US Federal Reserve’s decision to leave rates unchanged, with the question of a rate rise timing unanswered, I probably still will! I’ve invested though, for the longer term, so quite frankly, short term falls simply do not worry me, as I’ve said, its much less about the timing and much more about the time in. Looking at these two uncertainties, there is plenty of US data to support the case for a rate rise, from unemployment figures to headline growth, whether

this occurs in October, December or even January, the rise itself will come as no surprise. Until this is formally announced though, investors can expect more volatility; such is the short term sensitivity of markets to headline events. The undoubted slowdown in the pace of economic growth in China also continues to bear down on the markets, but the reality is that double digit growth in China always had a time limit. In 2014 this slowed to 7.4% and the IMF expects this to fall to 6.3% this year, although some economists argue that the true growth figures are lower still, this probably represents a normalisation of the global economy, rather than the precursors to a more significant seismic event. Short term tremors will continue to worry the markets on a day to day basis, but investors should continue to look beyond this to the calmer days that should follow a Fed rate rise and a stabilising in Chinese growth figures. In the meantime, it’s important to remember that a few tremors do not an earthquake make. Let’s hope this is equally true for the England Rugby team!!

FOOTBALL TALK...

TARPORLEY VICS FC

Owen goals provide gloss on tough period for Vic’s Tarporley Vics 1st Team have played three League games and one Cup game since the last report. On the League front Tarporley Vics suffered defeat against Altrincham FC Reserves, who have now “done the double” over the Vics, but then gained some stability with one all draws against both Golbourne Sports FC and Pilkington FC. To end the period Tarporley Vics 1st Team beat Mary Dendy FC 6-0 in the Crewe FA District Cup. Max Owen has claimed three goals in these games from a midfield position and the former Crewe Alex junior player has now started to flourish in the Cheshire League following his return from University. Tarporley Vics also played a quarter final tie in the Ethleston Cup during this period and they were unfortunate to lose by two goals to one against Oswestry Town FC. The game, which was played under floodlights at Yockings

Park, Whitchurch, was a well balanced game however the Mercian League Premier Division side were able to hold onto a 2 – 0 lead, despite Frank Farrington’s well taken penalty that reduced the arrears. Tarporley Vics Reserves drew one of their recent fixtures and lost the other three games. This season is seen as a development season for the Reserves, with a new group of 16 & 17 year olds moving from Junior Football into the senior level. Patience is required to allow these players to acclimatise and there have been some encouraging performances from the youngsters in these recent games. Please contact Mike, Andy, Sean, Clive, Adam or Matt or any other Tarporley Vics members for any other Tarporley Vics info. We are always looking for help, new players and sponsorship therefore any support is appreciated (Mike can be contacted on 07793905269)

Gardening by Janet Heath

Last blaze of autumn colour Late autumn and the remnants of flowers are still hanging on but mostly colour comes from tree leaf colour and berries. If you have the right conditions for Acers, that is, well drained yet moisture retentive soil, sheltered position out of early morning sun and wind then they will put on a wonderful display of autumn colour. Acer palmatum Bloodgood has dark crimson foliage but a real star is the locally grown, Acer palmatum Eddisbury. This has bronzy new leaves opening to green then colouring well in autumn. Berries on Sorbus, the Mountain Ash may still be around especially on varieties like Sorbus Joseph Rock with yellow berries. This compact tree is again good for smaller gardens and grows in an upright manner. The red berries seem to be eaten by birds first but orange, yellow and cream berries are left well into winter. Cotoneasters are also berrying well this year. Cotoneaster horizontalis with herring bone shaped branches will seed itself into corners but grown against a wall it will be covered in berries into early winter and has tiny white flowers in

early spring which are a magnet for bees. Plant the Euonymus Emerald n Gold around the Cotoneaster to give you bright yellow foliage to offset the scarlet berries. Another must have plant is the Kaffir Lily or Schitzostylis coccinea because it will flower from November into December. This has grassy leaves, will grow to about 50cm tall and has exotic pink or red flowers on long stems. It likes a moisture retentive soil, in sun and is a member of the iris family. I cut down any dying foliage that does not look good when frosted but I tend to leave plants like Sedums in place because their flower heads look lovely dusted with frost. Slightly tender plants can have foliage left in place to protect them from cold temperatures then can be cut back in spring. Plant your tulips now for colour next year. Some tulips will come back year on year especially if the soil is well drained in summer. Tulips do not like wet, heavy clay soils. I find that they do well in pots with pansies and primulas planted above the bulbs to give colour in autumn.

What’s on in your village November Kelsall Flower Club The club are having a visit on Wednesday 18th November, from Paul Burrell, former Butler to Princess Diana, who will demonstrate Christmas wreaths/table decorations and give some insight on how the Royal Family managed their Christmas festivities. Tickets Visitors £7.00. Members £4.00 available from Barbara 752196 or Cynthia 752694. Tarporley and District U3A Tarporley and District U3A monthly meeting – 10am on Thursday 26th November in The Community Centre. The speaker will be Judge David Shannon who will talk on: “Humour in Court”. Entrance £1 includes tea/coffee and biscuits. Visitors are welcome to attend ONE U3A meeting to help them decide whether to join. More detail at www.u3asites.org.uk/tarporley . Existing members who have not yet done so are again reminded they must renew their membership in order to attend this meeting. Peckforton and Beeston WI Unfortunately the speaker was not able to attend our October meeting but Chris Davies stepped into the breach by giving an account of the talk by Ann Diamond at the recent autumn meeting in Winsford. Of great interest was an account of Ann’s involvement in the campaign to reduce cot deaths (experience of which she had with her own son Sebastian). As a result of this campaign there was a change in the sleeping recommendations for new babies which resulted in a decrease in the incidence of such deaths. Another highlight of Ann’s career was interviewing Maggie Thatcher in ‘Fashion Week’. Although we did not have our planned speaker we had an excellent substitute in Chris. Next month is our AGM and supper and at the following meeting on 2nd December we shall learn about Christmas Crackers. We meet at Peckforton Village Hall at 7.30 pm, just pop along and join us. Call Margaret Ellis on 01829 261898

Bunbury WI The group meets at 7.30pm on the 2nd Thursday of every month in the Pavilion, with a talk or demonstration, some brief WI business and refreshments prepared by Members. At the annual Forest Group Darts Competition held in the Pavilion on 24th September the Bunbury WI Darts Team brought home the winner’s trophy for the first time in 10 years! Following our AGM on 12th November Prof Peter Styles will share his thoughts on Fracking and Shale Gas. There will be little business and no speaker at our 10th December meeting as we take time out to socialise and celebrate Christmas. The WI is a great way to meet like-minded women, make new friends, listen to a variety of interesting speakers, enjoy some of the many organised activities or join other smaller groups for reading, keep-fit, quizzing, luncheons, etc. Visitors and potential new members are more than welcome to join us. Just turn up – free refreshments and no charge for the first two visits. Tarporley WI Our next meeting is on Wednesday 4th November at 8pm in the Done Room behind St Helen’s Church. We will have our AGM followed by a social event. Our new programme for 2016 will be available, and memberships may now be renewed. We have lots of exciting speakers, craft, competitions and of course the Pimms & Pudding party to look forward to! All are welcome; tea, coffee and cakes will be served for a small donation. Bring a friend, the first meeting is free!
