Attempted theft at Kelsall cash machine Police are appealing for information from the public following an attempted raid in Kelsall. At approximately 2.45am on Friday 30th September at least two people tried to break into the cash machine outside the Co-op store on Chester Road. After failing to access the machine the two thieves got into a saloon car and fled the scene in the direction of Holland’s Lane. Investigating Officer Det Const Justin Jones said: “We are currently following a number of lines of enquiry in relation to this incident, including CCTV analysis and house to house enquiries. “As part of my investigation I’m keen to speak to anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident and believes they may have seen anything suspicious.” Anyone with any information in relation to the incident is asked to contact the Police on 101. Accountants merge Tarporley chartered accountants Hall Livesey Brown has merged its practice with Colin F Whitfield & Co. Adrian Crank, managing partner of Hall Livesey Brown, said: “Our practice was first established in 1924. In our 92-year history, the practice has grown organically, expanding its office network across Cheshire and North Wales. As a progressive firm, we have decided to grow our practice through a merger because we believe that the addition of Simon Haynes from Colin F Whitfield & Co and our growing team will help us to better serve our client base.” Colin F Whitfield & Co have now closed their offices in Whitchurch and Wrexham, relocating their team to the Hall Livesey Brown office in Tarporley. Library re-opens After an extended period of building work, Tarporley Library re-opens to the public on Thursday 27th October.

LIVING LONGER - A BONUS OR A BURDEN? ‘EVERYBODY NEEDS SOMEBODY’!

ACCORDING to the latest statistics, the number of people over 90 in the UK has nearly trebled and the number of centenarians has quadrupled in the past 30 years. In the past decade alone, the number of people reaching the age of 100 has increased by a staggering 71%. This rise means there are now increasing numbers of very old people being cared for by their not so young children. Academics studying the over 50 population have found that about 1:20 of those aged over 50 are caring for a grandparent, parent or parent-in-law. Age UK say that a third of the 6 million carers are now aged 65 and over and that the number of carers over 75 has increased by 35% since 2001. Over the past seven years, the number of carers aged 80 has increased from 300,000 to 417,000. As this continues to rise, a new ‘Sandwich Generation’ is being created! As an older parent myself, I have just finished paying for my youngest daughter’s university education. She is an artist, therefore not yet financially independent. So I continue to work full time. Whilst I love my job, there is always very little time for me. I am fortunate in that my mother, who founded the agency in 1968, has superb companionship day and night but it is down to me to organise her affairs, which can be demanding.

We are now facing a new situation where older and possibly less able sons and daughters are looking after their very elderly and frail parents. This could cause a new crisis in care that has not really been anticipated. Whilst my generation still consider themselves relatively young, we face constant pressures to continue working due to the government changes in the state pension age. So now we can find ourselves split between caring for our parents, our own children and grandchildren whilst still working full time. This has to take its toll and there will be breaking points ahead as we age, such as having a spouse that may need care, or that we encounter health problems ourselves.

Become a Bunbury carer and companion and change those endless lonely days into something worth living.

But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. Utkinton & Cotebrook Parish Council Much has happened since we last posted:

l At the October PC Meeting we took a decision to embark on a journey towards adopting a ‘Neighbourhood Development Plan’, a document that will detail the strategy for the Parish and its future and will, hopefully, enable our voices to be heard when decisions on planning, development and infrastructure are being made at Borough and National levels. A Working Party has been established and is being led by Councillor Ian Priestner and residents of the parish and the Green Space Action Group will be involved. The whole process will take around two years and at its completion we will have a NDP that will stand us in good stead for the next 15 – 20 years at least. If you would like to get involved and have skills in project management, research and analysis, marketing and communications, plus much more, then please get in touch with Ian via the Feedback and Comments page on the Parish Website. l We would like to try and allay some fears of Utkinton residents over the proposed children’s playground on the school playing field. Here too we have a Working Group comprising School, PTA and Parents, CWaC and the Parish Council but because it was a project without a home or even agreement in principle for what it might look like we omitted to consult with some of the closest neighbours. It is our intention to do so after the next Working Group meeting (Friday 14th October) and we will do so in a ‘round table discussion. l On the planning front there is no concrete news relating to the development of the Northgate field. However, having spoken to the Planning Officer and the Housing team they are waiting for clarification of detail within arc4’s Housing Need Survey before they make a decision to move to the next step, or not. In addition CWaC’s ‘Tree Team’ have put up a report in the comments section of the application that suggests that the layout, in its current form, “At present this proposal would be in contravention of best practice, NPPF paragraph 17 and retained local planning policy NE9”. Let us watch this space … l The other large project in its very early stages is the secure footway and cycleway between Utkinton and Tarporley (we haven’t forgotten Cotebrook but that is a much more difficult one to achieve!) Thus far another working group have discussed the possible routes with the landowners and will be talking with any affected house owners to see if it is feasible prior to establishing whether it is viable and affordable. Again we will keep you informed. l November 26th will see the Christmas Fayre at Cotebrook Village Hall AND the annual Quiz Night at Utkinton Village Hall – both events that prove to be highlights of the year. l Oh, we mustn’t forget that we are still seeking two councillors so if you believe that you would like to get involved in the future of our community please get in touch. Kelsall duo celebrate award success Rachel Sirett and Justine Whitfield have received their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards. The duo, who completed the award through Kelsall Youth Club, attended the presentation at St James’s Palace, London, where they received the honour from the Earl of Wessex. Prince Edward congratulated Rachel and Justine on their successes and heard about their individual DoE journeys over the last 18 months of hard work and dedication. Those who achieve a Gold DoE Award will volunteer, learn a skill, get fit, take part in a week long residential and plan and undertake an expedition in wild country.

Widely acknowledged as the world’s leading achievement award for young people, DoE programmes enable any person, aged 14-24, to develop key skills for life and work, such as confidence, commitment and team working. Kelsall Youth Club/ DoE centre leader Pete Moore, said: “Rachel and Justine were part of a team of 4 completing Gold this year from the Kelsall Group. Together they pretty much had to organise every part of their individual and group achievements themselves giving them real and significant responsibility. They truly earned this award and we look forward to their fellow participants Alice Smith and Tom Critchley visiting the Palace soon to collect their Gold Awards too.” Speaking about her DoE experience and Gold Award, Rachel Sirett said: “The whole DoE experience has been very challenging but great fun too. Working with friends on the expedition was probably the most memorable part and really feeling a sense of achievement together as a team. Helping to teach young children to enjoy dance as my volunteering section was also very rewarding and something I certainly will look to continue.” There are currently over 300,000 young people taking part in a DoE programme across the UK through a variety of centres including both state and independent schools, special schools, businesses, prisons, young offender institutions and youth groups. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Tarporley, Tattenhall, Kelsall, Tarvin &

Bunbury areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends

Amazing charitable giving follo A charity set up in memory of a Tarvin student who died earlier this year has raised over £10,000. The George Heath Foundation has been established as a charity by the friends and family of George to celebrate his young life and to ensure that his name lives on in the hearts of those who were close to him and in the numerous and diverse communities where he was widely known and loved. The 20-year-old student, from Deans Way, Tarvin, died in March following a collision with a lorry on the A49 near Tarporley. Mum Gaynor said: “Using the funds that have and continue to be raised in George’s memory, our objectives are now to provide charitable support to those community-based organisations and causes that touched George’s life; by helping them to further their public benefit work and ambitions. “Ultimately, the George Heath Foundation will endeavour to support an inclusive range of communities, causes and activities that touched George’s life, ensuring that the benefits of the Foundation are accessible to all. It is envisaged that this will encompass Tarvin and the surrounding villages. The charity aims to help everyone fulfil their potential and life.” TOURNAMENT The charity’s website is in the process of development, but in the meantime people can follow it on facebook at www.facebook.com/The George Heath Foundation. In the immediate aftermath of George’s death in March a football tournament was held, and funds in the region of £7,300 was generated. Work is underway to repeat the football tournament on an annual basis in May each year (2017 date is Saturday 27th May). Other events have been held in the last few months - including George’s friend Chloe Evans completing the Chester Half-Marathon, and a family prize bingo event in October at Tarvin Community Centre with over £1,600 being generated for the Foundation. The first donation made by the Foundation was to Tarvin Pre-School Nursery who have been very busy building their very own mud kitchen over the summer holidays and who are almost ready to have the official opening! Charitable status has now been granted by the Charity Commission (registered Charity Number 1169538). The next event is a stall at the craft fair being held at the Tarvin Methodist Church on Saturday 29th October, and after that the volunteers will be at the Tarvin Christmas Festival on Saturday 3rd December.

Magnificent mural celebrates learning This term has seen a group of talented artists come together to produce a mural that takes pride of place in the newly refurbished school hall and celebrates the diversity of learning that takes place in Tarporley High School. Over a period of two days pupils worked together to paint individual emblems that would represent each subject. From an art palette to a treble clef and a ballet dance to strand of DNA; the mural stands proud above the new school alumni board. Mr Bowland said: ‘It is always fantastic to see the independence of our young learners and I admire the way they work collaboratively with such commitment to celebrate our school. The work they have produced is a testament to high aspiration and achievement.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Eye make-up removal tips By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing

Q. What is the best way to remove eye makeup? A.When removing eye makeup it is always important to remember that the eye area is very delicate. The skin in this area is supported by a ‘ring’ muscle called the orbicularis oculi and handling the eye area gently is very important. A product that removes eye makeup very easily without the need for rubbing at the delicate skin is imperative. Apply the eye makeup remover to a damp cotton wool pad. Lightly press the pad onto the eye and hold for several seconds to give the remover time to do its work. Then gently wipe from the inside corner of the eye outwards over the top lid and inwards under the eye creating a circular motion. Fold the pad over to make a point to remover the make up from the lower lashes. Use a separate pad for each eye. Q. I think the eye makeup remover pads I have been using have caused irritation on my eyelids. Which ingredient could have done this? A. The well- known brand of eye makeup remover pads that you have used boast that they contain ‘eyebright extract’. There is no research to prove that this ingredient has any beneficial effect on the skin or eyes. However, the third largest ingredient in the pads that you have been using is ‘comfrey’ which can be a skin irritant and could be a likely cause of the irritation that you have been experiencing. I would suggest that you stop using the pads immediately and start to calm the irritation down with a salon application of clinical grade Colloidal Oatmeal and use a small amount of Barrier Repair twice a day until the skin settles. 44 To advertise call 01244 350398

Short mat bowling at Tattenhall The Barbour Institute has now acquired two Short Mat Bowling sets, with bowls, which could be used by any clubs, groups or individuals and private parties. We shall soon be arranging a session where people can come and have a go and see what the game involves. It could even be possible to create a club who may like to play against other villages for example. Due to short mat bowls being played indoors it can be an all year round game. If the game is of interest to you in whatever capacity then please call Hilary on 01829 770516 to discuss further.

Tarporley Allotments – alive & digging OPINION THIS summer’s mostly wet and cool weather has produced great growing conditions resulting in some excellent harvests of beans, brassicas, potatoes, roots and a variety of fruit and flowers writes John Roberts. Currently, we are cropping squashes of different types such as Butternut, Pumpkins, Turk’s Turban and Sunshine and I can personally vouch that that results are good and tasty. Sadly, though, it seems as if this will be our last productive full year since Tarporley Allotment Holders’ landlord (Enlighten Developments Tarporley, EDT) served ‘Notices to Quit’ on all plot-holders effective April 2017. You may have noticed that some of the plots have become increasingly untidy and overgrown in recent months which has been the combined result of a) EDT refusing to let half a dozen vacant plots twelve months ago and b) some existing plot-holders understandably losing their motivation and letting the weeds grow. This is most unfortunate as it might well lead to the misguided conclusion that there is now no demand for allotment plots in Tarporley. Nothing could be further from the truth as witnessed by our active society and historic waiting list. EDT has totally failed to find an alternative allotment site so, by next April, all the allotment

60 To advertise call 01244 350398

plots and access tracks will have quickly become overgrown and swamped with unsightly, rank grasses. Hardly a positive contribution to the aspiration of winning a Best Kept Village accolade. It’s highly likely that this situation will last for a very long time given the high degree of protection the allotments and bowls site enjoys and therefore the high probability that Planning Applications for development on the site will be refused. If EDT were truly enlightened, it would consider granting an extension to current leases past April 2017 which would allow temporary continuation of cultivation of the allotments and more time to locate a new site. This would also allow continued site maintenance and better orderliness. Additionally, plotholders would act as unofficial “guardians” to discourage access by unwelcome nonresidential visitors. Tarporley Allotment Holders, as an association, will continue up to and beyond April 2017 to act for its members in pursuing best solutions. To that end, a new committee has been voted into position with new Chairman, James Blackford, new Secretary, The Rev. Anne Gibson and Equipment Manager, John Latham The committee will continue to meet regularly and will manage the changing circumstances to its best abilities.

If I were to stop for too long, thinking about current world events, I’d probably simply bury my head under the duvet and not put in an appearance for several years, hoping that during my time in hibernation, Donald Trump turned out to be nothing more than a bad dream, and the Brexit landing had been as soft as a goose down pillow. This is far from a definitive list, but I’ve only a page, and I’m sure you’re not that interested in my duvet induced ramblings! Of course I can’t influence the impact of Brexit, whichever way you cast your vote in June, for better or worse, our Prime Minister has made much of the fact that there will be no “U Turn” and that article 50 will be invoked by the end of March. The Autumn Statement this year, I think will be an interesting one. What we do know is that Financial markets have rebounded sharply since the initial falls after the vote to leave was announced, perhaps partly due to a quick reaction from the Bank of England, and also in part due to a lack of weak economic data and a very swift change of political leadership. The resultant falling pound, is a double edged sword. Two thirds of the stock exchange top 100 companies are made up of firms whose profits come from overseas, and as a result their profits have risen due to the weaker pound. (source Moneyfacts Economic View Point October 2016). This has resulted in the FTSE 100 reaching its highest level since May 2015, and prior to that it had been a number of years since the FTSE reached such heights. The FTSE 250, perhaps a more realistic indicator, also reached a new all-time high recently. However, the double edge means that we will almost certainly start to see price rises in the shops as the cost of imports increase. We’ve got very used to being able to buy out of season fresh produce whenever we want it through imports, and much of the electronic and electrical equipment we buy is also imported. If you’ve been on holiday recently, you will already have noticed how much less the pound in your pocket buys in terms of the

euro, and the dollar if you’ve travelled long haul. Ultra low interest rates have certainly benefited those with mortgages, but for years now, savers have found themselves poorer, with many being tempted to look to the stock markets in an attempt to grow their savings. As a Financial Planner, you would probably expect me to applaud this course of action, and for many it is very much the right thing to do. Recently though I’ve been approached by a number of people who have never “dipped their toes” into stock market linked investments, and whilst the temptation to do so may be strong, particularly with the growth we have seen this year, the inexperienced investor should only ever make the decision to invest in this way with the help and support of good quality financial planning advice. I’ve talked about this before, but getting your cash holdings right, will mean that when a stock market investment goes down, which it inevitably will, you don’t have to panic, you can ride out the fall, and wait for the equally inevitable rise. So, if you would like talk about how you might get that long held cash ISA working a little harder, and understand whether in fact the alternative to punitive interest rate is appropriate for you, do please give me a call on 01948 840738 or 075959 28907. Me, and my team, look forward to hearing from you. The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of any funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested.

Bunbury school completes remarkable turnaround Bunbury Aldersey CE Primary School has bounced back with vengeance to earn huge praise from SIAMS inspectors. In February 2015 the school was placed in ‘special measures’ following an Ofsted inspection. In a record time of 11 months the school turned a corner and is now ‘Good with Outstanding behaviour and safety.’ On 29th September the school received their SIAMS, (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools), and was rated outstanding in all areas. Building on the earlier years success the inspector recognised that , “The school is well-placed to move confidently into the future as leaders have the capacity, motivation and determination to do so.” The inspector spent a day in school where she recognised outstanding strengths in all areas: meeting the needs of all learners, impact of collective worship, effectiveness of RE and the effectiveness of leadership and management. Executive head teacher Fiona Todd was recognised for her “purposeful, explicitly

Christian leadership which has unified the school and bought about rapid change.” Mrs Todd said: “This judgement means even more than the pride we received from Ofsted as it encompasses not only the school ethos but the strong values our pupils embed during their school career with us and beyond.” The inspector praised the pupils’ excellent behaviour and very positive attitude to life and learning. She recognised that “standards of attainment remain consistently high and that children are reflective and thoughtful learners”. The children “express their ideas and opinions articulately within an atmosphere of trust and acceptance.” “We are blessed to have a team of amazing staff, governors and great children. This result is testament to all the hard work of our school team and we are really proud of everyone in our school. Together we can continue to move the school forward and go from strength to strength.” added Nicola Badger, Head of School.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

Leaf colour in November

NOVEMBER can be a drab, dark month with the warmth of autumn behind us but it is the best month for leaf colour. Visit some of the large gardens open to the public or go to a local park to see the flame colours of trees, just before the leaves fall. Shelter and well drained soil can support a lovely Acer especially if grown near larger trees. The red colour of the one in the photograph will shine out in late autumn. The yellow berries of Pyracantha Soleil d’Or, has yellow berries in autumn and winter. The berries are not eaten by birds until later in the winter. It has white flowers in spring, loved by bees and is good as a hedging plant. It has very sharp spines abut 2cm long

that will pierce leather gloves so be cautious when planting or pruning! If you have a sheltered garden with well drained soil that does not get much hard frost why not consider a Pittosporum, an evergreen shrub with attractive foliage. There are many varieties but all will take cutting back to keep them to shape and size. The one pictured is Pittosporum tenuifolium Garnettii with dark stems and green and cream leaves. Jobs to do around the garden include finishing planting tulip bulbs which can go in later than daffodils. Plant in well drained soil in sun for best effect and expect to replant in subsequent years as the bulbs are not as vigorous as in their first year.

Put fallen leaves in a separate compost bin or put in a bin liner to rot down. One of my clients has superb compost made from leaves and grass cuttings mixed. They mow the lawn in autumn which cuts the leaves up and the grass clippings help them rot down fast. Prune any roses that have finished flowering to take off the top growth. Formative pruning of bush roses can be done in early March. Climbing and rambling roses can be pruned now for next year – a prickly job! Cut off all the little spindly stems. Then look for long strong new growth to tie in, preferably horizontally so that the stem sends up lots of new flowering growth along its length. Cut out old brown wood.

A pressing engagem Despite the well-forecasted gloomy weather and bouts of rain, the intrepid members of the Tarvin Woodland Trust went ahead with their second annual Village Apple Pressing Day and were rewarded with a good attendance of equally enthusiastic supporters, bringing their bags of apples to be turned into delicious juice, or just coming along for a few hours of fun and creativity with woodland crafts. Sandwiched as the day was, between two days of dry, sunny weather, it was perhaps a pointed reminder that trees need moisture/rain as well as warmth/sunshine! Hot dogs, burgers, hot drinks were all available for a small charge, but the rest of the experience and entertainment was free, the juice created and the activities enjoyed by children and adults alike. Set in an open area of the woodland on the SW fringes of the village and supported by the Cheshire Wildlife Trust and other local services, the event was a fine reminder of what can be achieved by a group of willing volunteers working for the wellbeing of the village as a whole. The organisers give their grateful thanks to all sponsors, helpers and all who braved the weather to support the event.

Third time unlucky for Alex A

ltitude sickness stopped intrepid explorer Alex Staniforth from reaching the peak of one of the world’s highest mountains.

Alex, from Kelsall, reached 7,125m on Cho Oyu (8,201m) in the Himalayas before developing AMS, which can have deadly consequences. Alex has visited the region twice before in attempts to scale Everest but was thwarted the last time by an earthquake and avalanche. His latest climb has raised lots of cash for Young Minds UK, a mental health charity. Alex explained that he was feeling strong at 6,000m but a day of climbing at high altitude knocked the stuffing out of him. “It was only 700m of height gain but one of the most painful days of my life, albeit the highest I’d ever been. The team delayed until the following day due to bad weather so we hung back, ate and hydrated. “Pre-summit nerves are not unusual but I felt horrendous. My oxygen was switched on but didn’t seem to stop the nausea, headache or dizziness as we set off. I couldn’t even walk in a straight line. There was a relentless snow slope beneath a sickly starlit sky and I had barely made it 20 mins out of camp before I knew from my limited experience knew something wasn’t right. “It’s just a mind game” I told myself, trying every motivational technique I knew in the book. I slept for a few hours on oxygen like a deflated Michelin man, then in the morning was given Dexamethasone for AMS. I then descended with the rest of the summiteers which also turned out to be a slightly knackering day – even for me having not summited! After being ill a couple of times en-route in the baking heat and getting held up at the ice wall for a while I was simply glad to be going down… unfortunately lying around complaining doesn’t get you down the hill.” Alex added: “I’m feeling pretty rough but very pleased for my teammates and enjoying celebrating both their success of summiting and getting us all down safety. “At the start of the trip I remember being so ill I thought I was going home – I was told that my chances of success were slim and even that I should take up sailing instead! All things considered I’m pleased with how far I got, the lessons taken on board and that I can now close one chapter to open another. The journey has never been about the summits.”
