THE IMPACT OF LONELINESS

ARE OUR ELDERLY BEING IGNORED?

IN a recent article in the Telegraph, Dame Esther Rantzen raised concerns that caring for vulnerable elderly people does not have the same ‘emotional impact’ on society as that of children. Dame Esther, who set up Silver Line two years ago, said they have recently received their millionth call and now handle up to 1,600 calls a day. The busiest day seems to be Sunday, and this August has been the busiest ever, more than Christmas, when loneliness is usually more acute.

Well it would seem so. For example, how many times do we stop to say good morning to an older person in the street? I suspect not often, and also most people do not like to ask for help because they are either embarrassed or do not want to be a burden. So I think we have to step out there and ask the question.

Last month we focused on finding the ‘Time to Talk’ to our families and elderly relatives. The one question that was not listed was, are you lonely?

She says “When it comes to helping older people there just doesn’t appear to be the same compassion….and there are people around us who feel almost invisible and inaudible”. She had a sad letter from a lady in Cornwall who said ‘I’m optimistic by nature, I have to be when I face another pointless day when I’m a waste of space’.

May be this is the most important one of all as ‘Everybody Needs Somebody’!

If you would a confidential discussion or to arrange a house visit please call me on 01829 260280. Become a Bunbury carer and companion and change those endless lonely days into something worth living.

But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER New Project Co-ordinator The Parish Council would like to introduce you to Abigail Webb, who has taken on the role of coordinating the various projects the Parish Council is and is planning to pursue, such as developing the Outdoor Sports and Leisure Land at Brook Road; the Christmas lights, and the improved maintenance of the Parish cemetery and the garden areas (e.g. Burton Square) around the village. As part of her work, she is planning a series of visual audit walks around the village with Parish Counsellors and residents to look at, for example, the condition of the roads, pavements, hedgerows and trees that abut/overhang the pavement/roads and street furniture. Details of walks will be advertised on the Parish Council website and Notice Board (near the bus stop) and on Tarporley Facebook and Twitter - TarporleyPC. It was certainly a difficult summer with the vast overrun of the roadworks at the junction of Nantwich Road and the bypass, and with the overrunning of the work at the High School with its subsequent extended closure of the library. The Parish Council has complained to the relevant authorities, outlining residents’ complaints, stressing the inconvenience people have suffered. After all the concerns, especially recently, over vehicles speeding in the village, Abigail is about to start a speed watch scheme on all the major roads in and out of Tarporley. If you would like to be volunteer, please contact her on projects@tarporley.org.uk

Cards for Good Causes Thanks to The Crown, on the High Street, charity Christmas cards can be sold in the village again this year. The charity is unable to use the usual location, at the Baptist Methodist Church, as the building is undergoing refurbishment, but the proprietors at The Crown have opened up their function room for this good cause. Cards, from a wide range of charities, will be on sale during the day from the end of October until early December. Please pop in and buy your cards there.

Affordable Homes for Sale As part of the planning permission consent for the housing development Haddington Park, off Nantwich Road, approximately 30 houses are available for purchase at below market price by people in need of housing on low incomes. People who live and/or work locally can find out more and if they might be eligible, from the sales office off Nantwich Road, which is open Thursday – Sunday 10.am to 5.30 pm and on Mondays from 12.30 – 5.30 pm. Tel 01829 730909 or email haddingtonpark@dwh.co.uk More information about eligibility can also be obtained by emailing AffordableHousing@ cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk because the local borough will be administering the allocation list.

Shopping Trips for Older People For a small fee, each Thursday morning older people are picked up from their home and taken by minibus to shop and visit the café at Rose Farm in Utkinton. These trips are subsidised by the Parish Council. If you would like to join, please contact MB Travel on 01606 43335 or 07774 064 838. 12 To advertise call 01244 350398

Utkinton & Cotebrook Parish Council The meteorologists tell us that we are, technically, in Autumn – but no one thought to tell the weather, we’ve had everything apart from hail and snow during September! There is much to report upon around the Parish; l Firstly the Northgate development in Utkinton – they say that no news is good news but the waiting for a decision on this highly contentious development continues to provoke discussion around the community – that the community submitted over a hundred individual objections across the May and July submissions says quite a bit. Next up is the forthcoming ‘Consultation’ by CWaC on their Local Plan 2 in which they seek to further define our communities – the Parish Council have submitted a paper contesting the decision to redesignate Utkinton as a Local Service Centre despite the community not having access to real public transport. Again it’s a waiting game as the Council ponders what it will be doing. As a result of the above two, the Parish Council has voted to investigate the potential for creating a Neighbourhood Plan to help the whole community guide the long-term future of the Parish. In October we will be looking at the process in our monthly Parish Council meeting (at Cotebrook Village Hall on 11th October) where we hope to have presentations from the team that did the Tattenhall NP and also Cheshire Community Action. The public are very welcome to come along and take part. l The proposals for a Children’s Playground on Utkinton Primary School’s playing field rumbles on and the discussions are well advanced between the Diocese, CWaC and the Parish Council to make this a reality – fingers crossed! A similar level of progress over a safe pedestrian and cycle route between Utkinton and Tarporley is being experienced with the working group having very positive discussions with the landowners along the proposed route (alongside Utkinton Road). l Our WI seems to be undergoing a bit of a revival with events being planned for the Winter Programme and all are welcome to attend – they have their own page on the Parish Website so check out their plans. l Cotebrook and Utkinton Village halls will be hosting events on the same day in November – the 26th. Cotebrook will be holding their annual ‘Christmas Fayre’ in the afternoon and Utkinton their highly entertaining ‘Quiz Night’ in the evening – we hope we can welcome you there. l Finally, our website goes from strength to strength and will pass 10,000 hits since the new site opened on 8th February and its sister social media page on Facebook has published over a hundred articles and reached in excess of 5,000 people. Add to that the fact that we produce this newsletter monthly and we hope that everyone in the community is getting to know what is going on. Third time lucky for mountaineer Alex?

THE mountains are calling – again for Kelsall’s finest explorer Alex Staniforth After twice being thwarted in his bid to climb Mt Everest, Alex has set off once more for the Himalayas in his bid to climb one of the world’s highest peaks. He is in the middle of a seven-week expedition to Tibet with the aim of climbing Cho Oyu at 8,201 metres (26,906 feet) high, with the 360 Expeditions team. Alex said: “My next step is to turn that goal into an achievement. I’m aware that most people don’t know what Cho Oyu is and assume it to be something from Star Trek. “Obviously this is no package holiday. It’s a similar process and challenge to Everest – to be fair, it’s only 600m lower…we will be climbing via the north west face and north west ridge, with advanced Base Camp at 5,700m altitude. Cho Oyu is not a technically difficult mountain and the majority of terrain does not exceed 30 degrees besides a very steep serac barrier at 6,600m.” This climb will support YoungMinds, the UK’s leading charity committed to improving the emotional well-being and mental health of children and young people. Alex added: “Having suffered depression and other mental health problems myself, let this trip be more than just an opportunity to inspire others and raise funds but a chance to end stigma; show other young people, or of any age, that mental health problems should be no barrier to achieving your potential. I want to help develop Young Minds’ hub in the North region - £30,000 could fund at least 30 open access training days on topics like resilience or self-harm, for example.” You can support the fund raising by visiting the Just Giving site at www.justgiving.com/AlexAdversity Despite the two disappointments on Everest, Alex is determined to make it third time lucky – weather and earthquakes permitting!. He added: “Once again I keep getting told; “you’re going to do it!”. They said the same last year - it’s often about waiting for the stars to align and having fun in the meantime. My mantra is to take it one day at a time. There’s no point worrying about things we can’t change. Eighteen months later, I’m excited to explore a new part of the Himalayas I haven’t visited. Can’t wait to get back out and remind myself why I started this journey six years ago. Sure, I’m nervous, and something would be wrong if I wasn’t...Onwards and (slowly) upwards!”

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Tarporley, Tattenhall, Kelsall, Tarvin &

Journal’s sad demise helps Bunbury Mill The Bunbury Mill Team was sad to hear of the termination of the esteemed Bunbury Journal after 40-odd years of publication. However, there was a silver lining - a donation of £800 was made from the Journal’s residual funds to the Bunbury Watermill Trust, making a substantial contribution towards the cost of replacing the embrittled wooden cogs on the sack hoist drive gear. On the left of the group is Dave Clapperton of the Journal team - on the right Mike Watson, who masterminded the machining and instalment of the new cogs.

Your local insurance broker could save you money MANY of you shop at your local butchers, grocers, bakery and visit nearby independent cafés as oppose to big chains. So why shouldn’t you do the same for your insurance? Like your local green grocer, your local insurance broker can offer great service and quality products.

Insurance Services, part of The County Group, are one of the UK’s Top 50 insurance brokers. After serving the local community for 13 years, we were recently crowned Regional Broker of the Year at the British Insurance Awards, from hundreds of entries across the UK.

Many people opt to go to a comparison sites for their insurance; however, there has been an increase of people who have been dissatisfied with the cover they have purchased online. They are finding out the hard way that, although they paid a small premium initially, they have spent a fortune in the long run on hefty excesses, or after forking out for things they didn’t know they weren’t covered for.

Branch Manager, Keith Campbell commented: “We are very pleased to move offices to a location which is more accessible for our customers and to a more modern building which will improve our clients’ experience overall. Even though we have moved offices, it’s still the same dedicated team who will find the right policy for you coupled with exceptional service.

Your local insurance broker works in a similar way to a comparison site, shopping the market to find you some of the best deals from many big name insurers. The difference is, we’re real people who go through different cover options in detail with you. You can rest assured that you should be fully covered in the unfortunate event of a claim. We are now closer than ever as we have recently moved offices to: Unit 7 Portal Business Park, Eaton Lane, Tarporley, CW6 9DL. Chester

If you have a little more to protect, we specialise in Private Client Insurance. This means that we are able to offer insurance for high net worth homes and contents, personal and motor insurance and farmland and agricultural vehicles! To find out more information, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.” So if you’re in the area, we’d love to see you at our new office. Alternatively, you can call us on 01929 733866 or visit our website: www.chesterinsuranceservices.com for our full list of insurance products.

HEALTH & BEAUTY ARE MASSAGES EXPENSIVE? By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing

Q. I’ve been advised to have regular massage, but the expense puts me off. What can I do? A . There are quite a few ways that you can cut back on the cost of massage treatments. The first is to ‘donate’ your body for students to practice on. Lots of training schools and salons look for models for training purposes for their students. If you are looking for a more experienced practitioner think about booking a course of treatment rather than paying for individual treatments. Most salons give a discount for booking and paying for a course of treatments in advance. Subscribing to newsletters and social media sometimes gives you advantages. For example, last month at Sensoria we gave away 10 free body massages just for Liking our page on Facebook. Q. I need help with my nails after having gel nails applied. What do you suggest? A. Gel nails shouldn’t really damage your nails, provided the correct preparation, maintenance, aftercare, and removal procedures are followed. The real damage is often caused by heavyhanded nail technicians. Be wary of over-filing and rough handling of the nail as this will cause weak, peeling and painful nails. I recommend IBX nail treatment which is a penetrating nail treatment to strengthen nails from the inside out giving strength without losing nail flexibility. It is cheap and effective to have done and can be used under future gel nails and gel varnish to prevent further damage. To read more about how IBX works visit the blog page of our website www. sensoriabeauty.co.uk 44 To advertise call 01244 350398

Short mat bowling at Tattenhall The Barbour Institute has now acquired two Short Mat Bowling sets, with bowls, which could be used by any clubs, groups or individuals and private parties. We shall soon be arranging a session where people can come and have a go and see what the game involves. It could even be possible to create a club who may like to play against other villages for example. Due to short mat bowls being played indoors it can be an all year round game. If the game is of interest to you in whatever capacity then please call Hilary on 01829 770516 to discuss further.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

AUTUMN FRUITS October is a month when the garden still sports some colour and foliage before the leaves fall in autumn. Squahes and pumpkins come in a multitude of shapes and colours as can be seen from the attached photo. When you tap the squash it should sound hollow and be ready to be stored in a cool dry frost free place for up to 6 months. Leaves will start to colour up towards the end of the month. Parthenocissus tricuspidata or Boston Creeper has large 3 lobed leaves that turn a brilliant red in autumn. If you have space on a wall and don’t mind climbing ladders every year to stop it going into the gutters, then it will give interest from spring to autumn. Any well drained soil, ideally with moisture will suit it. An underrated plant is the Persicaria affinis varieties with pink or red small bottle brush flowers. Not often for sale but often seen draped over wall or in crevices in gardens they make good ground cover and will flower from late summer into autumn. New varieties are being developed for their striking foliage and one most often seen is Persicaria microcephala Red Dragon with deep red and green leaves. Lastly, grasses such as the many Miscanthus varieties, tend to look great at this time of year. They will grow tall to 1.5m and develop silky tassels of flowers in red, pink and cream before fading to straw colours in winter. Miscanthus sinensis likes any type of soil provided it is relatively moist. Paired with lower growing Rudbekia fulgida Goldsturm and Sedum spectabile in drifts, it will provide colour and movement in autumn. There is a lot to do in the garden in October. Splitting and replanting perennials so they settle

in for winter. Plant trees and shrubs at this time of year too, except for tender shrubs as they may not survive winter. Planting spring bulbs to give colour from January onwards can start in October although Tulips are best planted in November to avoid disease. Pruning of deciduous shrubs can start although any evergreen shrubs are best left until next spring before cutting back.

Make your nest at the Birches and embrace Tarporley living AS the age at which people buy their first home rises to 33, along with the number of couples buying together, the concept of a ‘starter’ property is changing. Instead of purchasing an apartment or a smaller one or two-bedroom house, today’s first time buyers are also more likely to have children and therefore more inclined to want a family-sized home with easy access to shops, bars and restaurants. While they may think that a property that ticks all of these boxes will come at a premium, the availability of Help to Buy could make that dream move easier to achieve. For example, the Government-backed equity loan scheme is available at The Birches in Tarporley, an exclusive Elan Homes development close to the bustling village centre and just a 25-minute drive from Chester city centre. Thanks to Help to Buy a four-bedroom ‘Hardy’ style property could be secured with a deposit of just £18,750. Marie Morris, sales director for Elan Homes in the North, explained: “Government research shows an increase not just in the number of first time buyers who are couples, but who have started a family before they purchase a property. Their housing needs will be very different from someone who’s buying alone and so we need to reconsider what we think of as a starter home. “For Cheshire buyers, our new homes at The Birches could be the perfect solution. They’re stylish, spacious, full of family-friendly features and enjoy a prime location in a village ranked as one of the ‘best places to live’. Plus,

with Help to Buy available, those who’ve been saving for a home of their own could find they’re able to buy a larger property than they anticipated.” The Hardy is priced from £374,995, which could reduce to £299,996 using the equity loan scheme. The lower price includes a deposit of £18,750 and mortgage of £281,246. The remaining 20% is covered by the equity loan, which is interest free for five years. An attractive four-bedroom semi-detached property, the Hardy offers light and airy accommodation. Designed across three floors, the ground floor features an openplan kitchen/dining area, a spacious lounge with bi-fold doors leading into the garden and a handy cloakroom. Upstairs on the first floor are three bedrooms, plus the family bathroom. On the second floor is the beautiful master bedroom, complete with stylish en-suite. Situated on the edge of the thriving Cheshire village of Tarporley, The Birches couldn’t be better placed for excellent schools, traditional shopping, fine dining and more. Tarporley offers a traditional rural way of life, with all the style and sophistication you’d expect of a charming Cheshire village, while remaining within easy reach of the cities of Liverpool and Manchester. To enjoy a taste of life in a brand new home in the heart of Tarporley, with easy access to the thriving high street, visit The Birches, open Thursday to Monday from 10am to 5pm. For more information see www.elan-homes.co.uk/ developments/the-birches or call 0845 293 8997.
