HOSPITAL FUND-RAISER TARPORLEY’S War Memorial Hospital is a great source of pride for the village but it has to rely on donations to keep going. This month, one of those fund raising events is HospFest, a music festival featuring lots of local bands, so please give it your support. There is some good news regarding the Tarporley allotments and Royal British Legion - see the parish council newsletter on p12. This edition also has news of students’ expedition to Borneo, ambitious expansion plans for a primary school, more success for Alex Staniforth, a local author’s new children’s book, an appeal by MP Antoinette Sandbach and more local news.

LONELINESS AND FRAILTY Loneliness is one the biggest problems as we get older. As more and more people live into their 90s they are often left with few friends; families may be scattered around the country and it can be frightening to go out of the house by oneself. Even if one is quite healthy medically, frailty is the continual

Understanding the impact

might not be very serious but when added together have a large impact on one’s health, confidence and wellbeing. Overall loss of resilience unfortunately starts in your 60s and women are more affected than men. This rises to nearly 65% of people over the age of 90.

enemy. This gradual loss of resilience which is a natural part of the ageing process, can mean that one may not bounce back as quickly as one used to, especially after a bout of illness or periods of stress. There are a number of different issues or problems to consider, which, taken individually,

Companionship

You may still manage most things within your home, but the thought of going out by yourself can be very frightening. “Better to stay put and watch the television. Maybe somebody will ring or pop in to see me”, I hear you say. But maybe they don’t, and as the nights start to darken, 24 hours can be a long time! Maybe you cannot be bothered to get washed and dressed in the morning; your appetite decreases and anything will do to eat! Meaning you could have less energy for moving about to keep you flexible. You feel the cold more and everything appears to be coming to a stop. Well sadly, it literally is!

However isn’t it amazing when you see an elderly person, albeit frail, out and about enjoying the day, engaging with their surroundings and socialising. Oh don’t we just hope we will be like that when we reach that age! If only there was just a friendly local person to come in a couple of times a week. They could do a bit of housework; prepare some nice food and have a chat. Perhaps they could even take you out for a drive or go shopping. Just imagine how this could make a real difference to your life.

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL Newsletter Allotments, bowling green and car park transferred to parish council We are delighted to announce that a Section 106 agreement has been signed between Tarporley Parish Council, Cheshire West & Chester Council and Enlighten Developments (the developer of the former RBL site). This will result in the transfer of the bowling green, 60% of the allotments, and a new 32 space car park (a slight increase on the current car park capacity) into the ownership of the Parish Council for a nominal purchase price of just £1. Readers will be aware that the developer recently gained planning permission to construct 10 new homes on the current RBL car park and remaining allotments; three of these will be affordable homes. Although the Parish Council had some reservations about the development of the site, securing these assets for the village brings an end to the uncertainty that has hung over these valuable community facilities for some considerable time. The transfer will be completed within 3 months of the start of development work. Dogs on the Community Centre Field

Parking

Please remember to keep your dogs on a lead on the Community Centre Field and, as elsewhere in the village, please clean up after your dog.

The Parish Council is acutely aware of the difficulty of finding somewhere to park in and around the High Street and the impact that this is having on High Street businesses. There are no easy solutions to the problem, but the issue remains at the top of the Council’s agenda and we are hoping to meet with the Cheshire West & Chester Council Car Parking Officer in the near future to press CWaC to take action to help alleviate the problem. In the meantime we can all do our bit by considering whether we really need to take our cars into the centre of the village or whether we could walk.

Planning Update During the summer recess, the Parish Council held an Extraordinary Meeting to consider two planning applications: • Nantwich Road development – David Wilson Homes applied to CWaC to increase the number of dwellings on the site from 95 to 100 by swapping some larger house styles for smaller ones. As the original outline planning approval (won under appeal) was for up to 100 homes, there were no grounds for objection and the application has been approved. • Daffodil Fields – Jones Homes submitted an application to vary the size and style of the proposed houses on the Daffodil Fields site. The developer subsequently withdrew the application following comments from the Parish Council and advice from the CWaC Planning Officer. 12 To advertise call 01244 350398

Village Benches The Parish Council has been assessing the condition of public benches around the village. Brand new benches are being ordered for the area between The Old Fire Station Chocolate Shop and The Swan, as the current seating has reached the end its life. The village notice board, adjacent to The Swan, will also be renewed at the same time. The benches in the cemetery are in good condition, but will be sanded down and re-stained.

Local author’s picture book A local author has just released his latest picture book for children. Phil Allcock, who lives in Eaton, has written Clumpety Bump, a story about a very lazy horse who doesn’t like to walk, trot or gallop, much to his owner Wally Wobblebottom’s annoyance. When Clumpety ruins all of Wally’s gifts to his friends, Wally makes Clumpety stay at home, but will he get very far on his own? Clumpety Bump is a light-hearted tale with lyrical lines of dialogue, making it an interactive read. Phil’s humour is combined with an important lesson about hard work and helpfulness to keep children engaged and excited about physical activities. Phil is a biology graduate who was involved in research for some years, but then decided to pursue his love of writing. Since then, he has had 40 short children’s stories transmitted on BBC and ITV, including six read by actor and singer Paul Nicholas on ‘Playdays’ and ten read by comedian and actor, Lenny Henry, on CBeebies radio. Cantankerous King Colin was Phil’s first published children’s picture book in 2014 followed by Animal Magic, his first board book, in 2016.

Mums ready to ‘rough it’ in India Two local mothers are undertaking ‘Ride India’, an epic challenge to cycle from Agra to Jaipur in India next March in aid of Railway Children (https://www.railwaychildren.org. uk/), a local charity formed 22 years ago to help homeless children on the streets of the UK, East Africa and India. The recent Hollywood blockbuster ‘Lion’ highlighted the plight that many children suffer unbeknown to a lot of us prior to watching the true story of Saroo Brierley, a five-year-old boy who became lost on the streets of Calcutta. Anna Chow and Jo Bigland’s journey will start in Delhi where they will visit one of the Railway Children Projects and spend the day meeting the children and seeing first-hand how their fundraising will transform lives.

The cycle challenge takes six days, cycling over 450km from Agra to Jaipur, some days cycling over 100km, sleeping under canvas and having to contend with the heat, cold, dust, unmade roads, mosquitos and of course sore bottoms!! They hope from the 5-9 hours a day in the saddle and not Delhi Belly!! Anna and Jo are busy organising fundraising events, one of which is a Race Night on Saturday 11th November at Bunbury Village Hall. Tickets will be on sale shortly at local outlets, all welcome. They have funded the trip themselves and are looking to raise £3,000 for this amazing charity. Any donations would be welcomed. Tarporley Primary expansion wins council approval PLANS to expand Tarporley CE Primary School have been granted by Cheshire West and Chester Council. The school can now press ahead with the scheme to accommodate an extra 105 children. Planning permission has been given for four new classrooms, wash facilities, additional meeting rooms and office. The redesign will also expand the school hall, relocate the staff room, offices and reposition the front entrance of the school. The expansion plans also include a MUGA (Multi Use Games Area). From September 2018, the school will be able to take 45 children split across two reception classes. The school will be holding an ‘Ugly Bug ball’ on Monday 9th October for children (and parents) who are considering applying for a place at Tarporley. If your child is due to start school in September next year, please come to school for 2pm and have some fun in our reception class. Headteacher Kerry Forrester said: “I am delighted that the Local Authority has given approval for the expansion of our fantastic school. I passionately believe we should be able to offer a place to all the children within our village who want to come to our school. It really is a wonderful opportunity for all of us here at Tarporley CE Primary School. We will embrace every stage of the expansion to enhance the learning experiences for all of our children.” Chair of governors Gill Tyler said: “As a village school, we are thrilled that we will now be able to ensure that all children living in Tarporley can benefit from an education in our vibrant, welcoming and friendly Church school.” The project will now be going out to tender for a building contractor who will work with the school team to ensure the school can open in September 2018 with 50% increased capacity. The expansion of Tarporley CE Primary School is part of Cheshire West and Chester Borough Council’s Education Funding Agency Basic Needs capital programme.

Alex is a fundraising finalist Kelsall’s Alex Staniforth has made it to the finals of the JustGiving awards for ‘Endurance Fundraiser of the Year’! His recent Climb The UK challenge made over £23,938 for Young Minds UK, to help young people struggling with mental illness get the help they need. Alex said: “This is all thanks to the widespread sponsorship and generous donations received, which totally smashed the original fundraising target of £10,000. “That alone made the 5,000-mile journey worthwhile… but to be shortlisted and recognised out of 31,000 nominations has totally blown me away.” 28 To advertise call 01244 350398

Exciting times for Bunbury Singers BUNBURY Singers is a mixed community choir, whose members have a love of singing and enjoy meeting people and having a good time! The choir have recently undergone some big changes, including the appointment of both a new Musical Director and Accompanist, Ken Fayle and his son, David. Ken is an extremely experienced conductor. He has conducted several local choirs and is a member of the Advisory Council of the Association of British Choral Directors. He is Organist and Director of Music at St Andrew’s in Tarvin. David has been playing and performing in choirs and musical ensembles, both locally and further afield, over the last ten years. He currently accompanies, conducts and teaches in primary schools in Cheshire. Sarah-Jane Stockman, from the choir, said: “We are delighted to have them both join us, and we are looking forward to a varied and exciting future.” The choir meet on Monday nights, during term time, at Bunbury Primary School, 7.15pm-9pm. You don’t have to read music and there are no auditions! Sarah-Jane added: “If you enjoy singing, meeting people and like to have fun, then come along and give us a try! Please bring along your friends too, so you are not alone!” There is a “Singing and Cake Open Evening” on Monday 9th October, and anyone who enjoys singing is welcome to come along. You’ll be sure of a warm welcome! You can contact Sarah-Jane Stockman on 01829 260714 or Alison Nolan on 07817 926201 for more information.

HEALTH & BEAUTY By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing

Why cleanse my skin? By Angela Bartlett, Owner Sensoria Beauty Q. Why do I need to double cleanse my skin? A. If you have ever had a professional skin treatment you will have noticed that your Therapist will have double cleansed your skin at the beginning of the treatment. This is because they understand that no matter what else you do with the skin, if it isn’t thoroughly clean then other products applied later in the sequence will have less of an opportunity to penetrate. Build up of pollution, oil, grease, make- up and general metabolic debris will act as a barrier to the creams, serums and moisturisers. So start with a product to dissolve oil based debris and then move on to a second step with a cleanser suited for your skin type to get maximum benefit from your cleansing routine. You will notice the difference! Q. Why are hopi ear candles good to have at this time of year? A. We are coming up to the time of coughs and colds which can leave us with blocked sinuses and general head discomfort. Hopi ear candles can help in a number of ways and are very good at relieving congestion in the sinuses. It’s a very gentle, relaxing treatment and the sense of wellbeing it brings is welcome in the autumn as the nights draw in. For a full list of how Hopi Ear candles can benefit you please visit the blog page at www. sensoriabeauty.co.uk

HospFest is ready to rock your world! A music festival in aid of the Tarporley War Memorial Hospital will be held in October. HostFest, the brainchild of Mike Linsell, Brian Blake and Ken Wood, promises to be a musical extravaganza in aid of the hospital. The Initial idea for this multi-genre musical festival came from a desire to help the independent community facility. The festival, which will be held at Tarporley Community Centre on Saturday 21st October, will be split into two parts. From 4pm there will a tea dance with cream teas provided by the Co-op and from 7pm the evening will bring a selection of music from The Spitting Feathers and many more. Tickets are £6 for the afternoon and £10 for the evening, however, if you want to experience all that HospFest has to offer and stay all day, then

that will cost you just £12. It is for charity after all. The tickets will be available soon and can be bought from Swaffield’s, Blagg’s and Tarporley Hospital Reception, so make sure you follow @ Tarporley_WMH on Twitter to find out when they are on sale and keep up to date with bands and groups who have signed up to play. Tarporley War Memorial Hospital is running at a deficit and without events like these, raising much needed awareness and funds, it simply could not serve the community the way that it has done for nearly 100 years. Being one of only a few remaining independent Hospital facilities providing both in-patient and out-patient care to the community, while not being a NHS Hospital, is something Tarporley and its surrounding villages should be proud of.

MP joins dementia campaign Antoinette Sandbach, the local MP for Eddisbury, is asking constituents to take part in Cheshire Memory Walk which is taking place on Saturday 7th October at Cholmondeley Castle. Memory Walk is Alzheimer’s Society’s flagship fundraising event, and this year their aim is to have over 100,000 people across the country to take part, to help raise £9 million in order to reach more people affected by dementia through the society’s support, campaigning and research. The event provides a great opportunity for people to come together, celebrate loved ones affected by dementia and raise money to reclaim the future. This is the first year the Cheshire Memory Walk will take place at Cholmondeley Castle following the success of last year’s event at Delamere Forest. Ms Sandbach said: “As a dementia friend I would urge people to take part and support this great initiative. With around 220,000 people developing dementia every year it is vital that we work together to ensure that long term help and support is given to those affected along and hopefully defeat dementia. This is a policy area which I follow very closely and I want to ensure that there is a long term commitment and strategy for dementia in Eddisbury.” For details on how to sign up go to www.memorywalk.org.uk

Caroline joins Apprentice winner’s team BBC TV’s Apprentice winner Alana Spencer has chosen Kelsall’s Caroline Brown as a brand ambassador. Alana Spencer rose to fame with her Ridiculously Rich brand on the BBC TV series The Apprentice. After impressing Alan Sugar with her business plan and baking skills she was declared the winner of the 2016 series and bagged herself a new business partner and £250,000 investment. A skilled baker, Alana had already achieved success creating and baking her own recipes and then selling them at food fairs, festivals and farmers markets across the country. To expand her foodie empire Alana decided to replicate this business model by recruiting regional brand ambassadors. In March Caroline saw the request on Twitter, and being a huge Apprentice fan and keen baker decided to apply. Despite numerous applicants and heavy competition for the region Caroline was invited to take on the Ridiculously Rich by Alana franchise for Cheshire.

Village speeders caught

THE speed gun has been catching drivers out in Duddon, Oscroft and Kelsall recently. PCSO Ryan Reid had the Tru-Cam speed camera out on the A51 Tarporley Road, in Duddon, where a number of vehicles were over the 30mph limit. Twelve people were caught breaking the 30mph limit in Willington Road, Oscroft. Similar checks on Chester Road, Kelsall, resulted in zero speeding offences.

TARVIN TENN

Peter wins singles cro Tarvin Tennis Club dodged the showers to hold their tournament finals day and discover their 2017 champions in their 50th year of existence. Over a considerable period, Peter Nosworthy has faced several different challengers for the singles title and this year yet again managed to keep his crown - for the 17th time! He then followed this by winning the doubles title with young member Mark Walker, after three gruelling sets of fluctuating fortunes. Felicity Pochin will be a new name on the Ladies Singles trophy after defeating former winner Sarah Mitchell in another close match, with yet another first-time club winner in Ros Roberts who partnered Judi Jennings to the Ladies Doubles title. Rounding off the day at nearly 7pm Catherine Mason and Graham Bunting won the Mixed Doubles title after another three-setter, a tribute to Graham’s fitness and determination after finishing runner-up in the previous two finals played that afternoon. The event was well supported by members, friends and families, who throughout were kept well supplied with cups of tea and cakes. A most enjoyable and entertaining few hours.

SCHOOL 2018 CHOOSING the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions a parent can make. Over the next few pages you can learn about some of the open days that will be running across the area during the autumn months. Open days are so important because they can show parents

much more than a report or a school league table. You get to meet staff, ask questions, see the facilities and see how the school operates. Looking for the right school is like searching for the perfect home. It’s only when you step inside that you know if it’s right for you and your child.

Borneo expedition was ‘amazing experience’ A group of students from Tarporley High School have returned from an expedition to Borneo where did invaluable work to help local communities. I have learnt so much about how other cultures live, about how much we can damage the planet and what we can all do, in our small way to help. I have also learnt much about myself too!”

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

AUTUMN FRUITS October is a month when the garden still sports some colour and foliage before the leaves fall in autumn. Squahes and pumpkins come in a multitude of shapes and colours as can be seen from the attached photo. When you tap the squash it should sound hollow and be ready to be stored in a cool dry frost free place for up to 6 months. Leaves will start to colour up towards the end of the month. Parthenocissus tricuspidata or Boston Creeper has large 3 lobed leaves that turn a brilliant red in autumn. If you have space on a wall and don’t mind climbing ladders every year to stop it going into the gutters, then it will give interest from spring to autumn. Any well drained soil, ideally with moisture will suit it. An underrated plant is the Persicaria affinis varieties with pink or red small bottle brush flowers. Not often for sale but often seen draped over wall or in crevices in gardens they make good ground cover and will flower from late summer into autumn. New varieties are being developed for their striking foliage and one most often seen is Persicaria microcephala Red Dragon with deep red and green leaves. Lastly, grasses such as the many Miscanthus varieties, tend to look great at this time of year. They will grow tall to 1.5m and develop silky tassels of flowers in red, pink and cream before fading to straw colours in winter. Miscanthus sinensis likes any type of soil provided it is relatively moist. Paired with lower growing Rudbekia fulgida Goldsturm and Sedum spectabile in drifts, it will provide colour and movement in autumn. There is a lot to do in the garden in October. Splitting and replanting perennials so they settle

in for winter. Plant trees and shrubs at this time of year too, except for tender shrubs as they may not survive winter. Planting spring bulbs to give colour from January onwards can start in October although Tulips are best planted in November to avoid disease. Pruning of deciduous shrubs can start although any evergreen shrubs are best left until next spring before cutting back.
