LATEST NEWS ON ELDERLY CARE

The study recently published in the Lancet Public Health journal, analysed the projected health and social care needs of the elderly between 2015 and 2035. So the situation is definitely getting worse! It says that the number of over 85 year olds needing round the clock care is set to double. Even worse, the number of people over 65, needing 24 hour care is set to rise by a third. This report warns the care system is now definitely at breaking point. It is estimated that by 2035 there will be 1.5 million people over the age of 85.

What the Experts say…..

RECRUITMENT DAY

Professor Jagger said: “This expanding group will have more complex care needs that are unlikely to be met adequately. For example, long term conditions such as arthritis and the rise in obesity, let alone the increased number of people over 65 likely to get dementia and other diseases is predicted to double by 2025 and treble by 2035. Caroline Abrahams, charity director at Age UK urges the government to meet the challenge head-on. She says: “The burden on families is now far too great. Effective and joined up social care services are in sharp decline. The government’s top priority must be to steady the ship…so that our older population have the confidence that they can get the help they need.”

CHARITY OF THE MONTH: Please contact us on 01829 260280

So with all this very worrying information, we know we need to recruit more experienced and caring people to look after our elderly generation. We cannot help everybody, but we can make a difference to some people. I invite anyone who wants to make that difference, to come and meet us on: FRIDAY, 5TH OCTOBER AT BUNBURY VILLAGE HALL 10AM - 3PM Join the campaign to help people remain living in their own homes!

Like us, Share or Comment on and we will donate £100 to this charity. Go to www.bunburyagency.com

Artist Amy’s a hit across the pond Congratulations to Tarporley High School Year 13 student Amy Beaumont who has recently sold her first painting. Amy who has a dedicated Instagram page as a platform for her artwork was contacted by an interested party in America. She subsequently agreed on a deal and the painting is now ‘across the pond’ in the USA. This is a huge achievement and a testament Amy’s incredible work ethic.

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL Newsletter Oathills Lea statement Statement regarding Oathills Lea from Weaver Vale Housing Trust (WVHT): “The Trust recognises that Oathills Lea is valued and well thought of by both the residents and the wider community. We are also aware of the concerns expressed by people within the local community. There is an ongoing review, which is still at an early stage, for which we have been gathering our residents’ opinions on the accommodation and facilities at the scheme. We can categorically say that Oathills Lea will not be sold to a private developer. The residents at Oathills Lea are our priority and it is our duty to provide everyone with accommodation that meets their needs, and those of our future customers. As part of this review, we will look at a number of options and work with our Tarporley residents, the Parish Council and Cheshire West and Chester Council to understand what options are needed for older persons housing in the village. The Trust will continue to hold regular meetings with residents and the Parish Council to keep them informed of all the progress in relation to the future of Oathills Lea.” WVHT will be holding a drop-in session to discuss Oathills Lea on 20th October from 11am to 3pm in the in the Main Hall of the Community Centre. This session is open to the whole ward. WVHT has been contacted by Cheshire West & Chester Council (CW&C) about undertaking a housing needs survey (for older people) in Tarporley and were informed that the survey would be done in in partnership with WHVT, CW&C and the Parish Council. It is understood the survey would be carried out with the support of Cheshire Community Action. The Parish Council’s notes on its meetings with Oathills Lea are available on www. tarporley.org.uk or via the Clerk. 12 To advertise call 01244 350398

Primary School Update Kerry Forrester, Headteacher, Tarporley CE Primary School provided an update to the Parish Council to include with this month’s newsletter: “This has been a really exciting year for everyone in our school community as we entered our first Governor led building project which has given us a fantastic new building and refurbished hall. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with our building company, Paveaways, on our expansion which commenced in December 2017 and was completed this September. The communications between the Paveaways team and our school has been exemplary, ensured smooth progression of the programme which has faced some challenges due to our constrained site. The calm and honest manner adopted by the construction team was reassuring at such times and the excellent relationships led to a strong partnership between school and Paveaways. We received nothing but high praise from the community about all of the builders and contractors working on our school site. We are delighted with our amazing school and our children are loving the additional space we have gained. This means we are now able to offer places to all of the children in our community who wish to come to our school.”

Second Monday of the month (except August) in either the Committee Room or the Craven Room (the downstairs room accessed from the rear car park) of the Community Centre. Each meeting starts at 7pm with an Open Forum, during which members of the public can address the whole Council on matters of concern to them. At 6.30pm, prior to this meeting, the Parish Council holds a surgery where members of the public can talk one to one with individual councillors on an informal basis.

Community Speed Watch Scheme The Parish Council is aware that there are concerns in the village regarding the speed of traffic through the village. In order to fully investigate this, it is necessary to carry out a ‘Speed Watch’ survey. This requires volunteers to take charge of the equipment and also someone who is willing to coordinate the scheme. Therefore, the Parish Council is asking for volunteers to take this on. If you are interested in becoming involved in the scheme and would like further information, please email the Parish Council Clerk at :- clerk@tarporley.org.uk.

Give 3-hours a week and do something amazing… volunteer for Home-Start Cheshire! “My volunteer visited for 3 hours a week, this gave me some well needed respite. She played with my son, whilst I showered, ate and recharged. It was so nice, to know that on Tuesdays, in all the loneliness and chaos, there was hope - there was some help, and most importantly for me, it was another adult. I no longer felt alone”. Home-Start mum Just a few hours a week can make a massive difference to a family experiencing difficulties such as postnatal illness, a child’s disability, family breakdown, isolation, bereavement and multiple births. As one of the leading charities, we train volunteers, who are parents themselves, to lend this crucial support. This might be in the form of an extra pair of hands, a companion, someone to encourage and nurture. Time and time again this practical and emotional support has helped families get back on track just when they’ve needed it. And it’s not only the families who benefit. Volunteering can help you to make new friends, improve selfconfidence, personal and social skills and enhance your CV. “As a Home-Start volunteer I felt I was part of a supportive team and have found the experience enjoyable, rewarding and confidence boosting” Home-Start volunteer

Campaign to save Tarpo PEOPLE living in a Tarporley retirement home fear that it will be closed by the housing trust which owns it. The residents of Oathills Lea Retirement Complex and their families have written to the local council and MP Antoinette Sandbach in an effort to convince Weaver Vale Housing Trust to look favourably on the home. The elderly residents were informed three months ago that the future of the building is being ‘reviewed’ by Weaver Vale Housing Trust. The worry is that this is a precursor to closure. Campaigner Denise Willis said: “We desperately need help to get the message out to all of Tarporley and beyond…. in order to keep the building open so that the residents can stay in their homes. “We need 2,000 signatures on a petition…. but 38 To advertise call 01244 350398

we feel very much that we are in a David and Goliath position at the moment.” In the letter sent to the MP and council it says: “We were told that we would be kept informed as to what was going on, but we haven’t heard a word. It is so cruel to do this to us all, to leave us in suspense. Some of the residents’ health is suffering because of this. “There are 24 flats here, but when a flat becomes empty it is not being filled. At the moment only 12 are occupied, the other rooms are not being made available. When enquiries are made they are being told that there are none available! “We feel we should take some form of action before it is too late, and maybe lose our homes. We are all so happy here, we are like family. If the building is closed, we will all be split up and sent

orley retirement home to Winsford, Northwich, or who knows where. Some of us recently sold our homes to move to Tarporley to be near our family, now we have no idea what will happen to us in the future. Most of us have lived all, or most of our lives in Tarporley. “The doctors, chemist, hospital and shops are on our doorstep. We are settled and very happy here and do not want to move. “There is no other accommodation for the elderly in the village, (at the moment anyway, and will it be affordable if that happens?), and neither will there be for the next generation. We know the building needs updating and rewiring, but surely that would be preferable to closing the building.” A Weaver Vale Housing Trust spokesman said in response: “As part of this ongoing review, we have met with residents of Oathills Lea to seek

their views on the accommodation and facilities at the scheme, to see whether they meet the modern standards expected by our current and potential future customers, and ensure they are fit for the future. “We are grateful for all the feedback we have received from residents so far, and all this information is being included as part of this review. We are currently holding all vacant flats in the scheme while this review takes place – which is expected to be completed by the end of the year. “We have and will continue to encourage Oathills Lea residents to come to us with any queries they may have. We are also meeting with the arish council and are happy to have regular conversations to address their concerns.”

HEALTH & BEAUTY By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing

Should I use a face mask? By Angela Bartlett, Owner Sensoria Beauty Q. I’m using all the right face creams, so why should I use a face mask too? A. We are often asked this question as face masks are one of the least understood of all the beauty products. Personally, as a Therapist, I find them one of the easiest and most effective ways to give your skin a quick and effective boost, no matter what the skin type. This is because most masks contain an ingredient (usually butylene glycol), which works as a delivery agent and solvent, allowing your skin to absorb more of the other active ingredients in the product formulation. So, when choosing a face mask first decide on what you want to achieve from the product – deep cleansing, refining, hydration, moisturisation etc. Then check which are the main active ingredients to see if they will help you achieve your skin care goal. For more help on how to select the right mask for your skin visit the blog page at www.sensoriabeauty.co.uk Q. How long do the results of a Rejuvapen treatment last?

Angela Bartlett is a highly qualified Advanced Aesthetician with over 34 years of experience in the beauty and holistic industries. She is a past Chairman for BABTAC & CIBTAC, teacher and International Examiner. Her expertise is currently called upon to judge national competitions, the provision training and quality treatments.

44 To advertise call 01244 350398

A. Unlike other temporary cosmetic treatments the results of Rejuvapen are long-lasting and ongoing. The collagen that is produced following a treatment takes 6-8 weeks to ‘mature’ to give the rejuvenating effects expected. The number of treatments required will depend upon the condition of your skin, age and expectations. Following a course of treatments clients usually return as they can see results and want to continue the progress. The results are effective, subtle and appeal to clients that do not want any chemical or foreign substances injected into their skin. Having said that, many clients have Rejuvapen in conjunction with treatments such as Botox, as they give a great overall improvement to the skin that injectable wrinkle softening treatments cannot achieve alone. GARDENING BY JANET WEEDS

Autumn tints in October

W

ith one of the driest summer of recent years this has not been great for gardeners. If you do want to plant anything out, firstly dig a hole at least 50% deeper and wider than the pot. Incorporate a lot of well rotted manure into the soil. This will act as a sponge to retain moisture. Make sure the plant has been standing in water for at least 2 hours to soak the compost. When planting put half a watering can of water in the base of the hole then backfill gradually, adding lots more water as I go. Firm the soil down and add another can of water on the top to settle the soil. Plants that do well in October include Cyclamen hederifolium. These autumn flowering cyclamen are hardy and like a light soil and a sunny dry spot around shrubs. They also do well in pots where the white marbled green foliage looks stunning all winter. Another

Janet Weeds Garden Mentor

bulb that does well in pots is the Nerine with it’s exotic pink flowers late in autumn. Again, they need well drained soil and a light dry soil by a wall would be ideal provided that they are not shaded by larger plants. Crab apples or Malus are in full fruit now with many keeping their tiny apples all winter. You get blossom in spring and coloured fruit in autumn on small trees. The variety Golden Hornet has bright yellow apples, Harry Baker has pink flowers and large red fruit which are good for Crab Apple jelly. John Downie has white flowers and two toned red/orange fruits also good for jelly. All are self fertile so they do not need another variety to pollinate the flowers, unlike some apples. Crab Apples are a good pollinator for apple trees so having one in the garden on a dwarfing rootstock (M9 or M26 for a small tree) is ideal.

01244 318258 / 07984 627270 janet@gardenmentor.co.uk

This year my Star Jasmine or Trachelospermum jasminoides, has had flowers in summer and the glossy evergreen leaves have already started to turn red. Last winter it stayed red all winter, brightening up the garden. My Acers in pots have also turned to tints of orange, red and yellow. October is the time to finish harvesting tomatoes. Bring green ones indoors to ripen in the heat. Squashes and pumpkins should be ready to store too before any frost arrives. This year my runner beans will have finished early but sometimes they last into October. Pick them and cut the plants down to a stump. Leave them in the soil and they may well re-sprout next spring as mine did this year. Re seed any bare patches of grass after scarifying the soil, adding some compost, then sowing the seed and water in well.

I received a phone call a couple of weeks ago, from someone offering to undertake a full pension review for me. I politely explained that I was a fully authorised Chartered Financial Planner, with a FTSE 100 listed Company behind me, also authorised by our industry regulator, with a FTSE 100 listed Company behind me, also of course authorised by the FCA. I didn’t get the opportunity to ask further questions, as the caller had already hung up by this point! Fortunately for me, I knew this was going to be a scam, someone trying to effectively steel my pension pot, and had a good idea of what would come next in terms of the caller trying to reel me in. I’m guessing that many of you reading this have been victims of attempted theft at some point, either though various banking scams, emails, or even letters telling you that you’ve won the lottery, all you have to do is send a payment to an account number to release the funds you’ve apparently won without ever even having bought a ticket!! Unfortunately though, many of these fraudsters are sounding more and more plausible and so, in a slight departure from my usual article, I wanted to make you aware of some of the things which should send warning lights going off, particularly with regards to your pension savings. • First of all, no reputable Financial Adviser is going to cold call you offering a pension review, so if you haven’t asked for one, I suggest you hang up. • If the caller manages to keep you on the phone, they will often talk about accessing your pension funds before age 55. This is simple, you can’t, again hang up. • Assuming they still have you on the phone, you may hear words like “pension liberation, pension loophole, free reviews, unique, environmental friendly, overseas or ethical, by now your alarm bells should really be ringing, so please, hang up.

If after all of this, you are still tempted to deal with the person you have never met, and has called you out of the blue, then do check them out on the Financial Services Register and not the details they give you. You can do this by entering the company name, the persons name who called you, their FCA registration number (if they have one) or a postcode. If they are genuine, they will be on this register, as am I, and as is the other qualified Adviser who works in my team. Despite the so called Pension Simplification Rules which were implemented in 2006 and the 2015 implementation of the Pension Freedom Rules, this area of financial planning remains complex, particularly when you are making decisions about accessing your pension savings. Advice will often be needed, but please be on the front foot, find a qualified regulated Adviser yourself, or ask someone you know has done so . In my practice, the majority of our clients come to us as a result of referrals from existing clients. Finally, if you deal with a firm or individual who is not regulated, you may not be covered by the Financial Ombudsman Service of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. The value of a pension with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the underlying funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested.

My first year as a flow Well, what a year it has been. As I stand in the kitchen still in my coat having just come back from the flower farm, making the children’s dinner with the dogs beside me following my every move as I am two hours late with their dinner as well, I look out onto the garden as the autumn starts to take its toll on the plants and trees and I ask myself “How have I done in my first year in business as a flower farmer”? It’s a good question. I have always had a love for gardening. I’ve has a little gardening round for a number of years and studied garden design at Reaseheath College as well as obtaining my RHS qualifications many moons ago. Starting a cut flower business is a dream job for me and the idea hit me like a lightning bolt one morning four years ago. I was sat having a cup of tea in bed and reading the Sunday paper gardening supplement. Sarah Raven had written an article about cut flowers. The UK cut flower industry is worth £2.2 billion at retail level and only 10% of those are grown in the UK, the majority grown in Holland and South Africa. These are stifling statistics when in the UK we have the most amazing conditions for growing a huge variety of plants from all over the world. Ignoring any information as to why the UK only grew

10% I had already decided I wanted a piece of the flower action, I wanted to be a flower farmer who would grow and sell Cheshire grown cut flowers. In my head I had written a business plan, I knew what I was going to grow, where I was going to sell. In reality I worked full time in a job that was nothing to do with horticulture, had two children still at primary school and frequently made dinner in my coat. Where was I going to find the time? The opportunity came four years later. My partner, who has a landscaping business, had been working at a house in Bunbury. The young family had a derelict kitchen garden that needed some care and attention. The deal was if I maintained the area, I could grow my flowers, so Cheshire Cut Flower Farm was born. I set to work in November 2017 clearing the area and getting the rabbit fencing up and turning the soil, which was beautiful as it had been worked as a kitchen garden for centuries. While the farm was left over the Christmas period I had set to work at home filling the windowsills with seed trays and ordering seeds ready for the new growing year. I spent hours potting up my sweet peas. I knew they would be popular

wer farmer and so bought a variety of beautifully scented peas including Charlie’s Angel, Royal Wedding and Beaujolais. I lovingly tucked them up in the greenhouse over the winter period hoping for a bumper crop in the new year only to find in two weeks time that the mice had eaten the lot! Trying not to be too disheartened by my first propagation failure I moved on to other plants, Larkspur, Ammi Majus, Bupleurum, Rudbeckia, I struggled with the Zinnia which I would later find to be the best cut flower ever! I accidently dropped one on the surface of the compost in the adjacent Ammi seed tray. It propagated far better than the others and so I planted more on top of the soil rather than putting a thin layer of compost on top of the seeds. I have since learnt that Zinnias love light. I had trays full of seedlings, by spring I had also planted seeds directly into the ground (in situ for those of you who know the lingo). I was on a role, time to set up a social media page to let everyone know about my flowers and that they could pick up a bunch at the gate of the farm and leave money in the honesty box. Armed with what I had learnt at college, I had a pretty good understanding of colour and texture, it was the floristry side of things that I was going to struggle with. Having done some research on conditioning flowers and putting bouquets together I was satisfied with the results and hesitantly put five bunches on the gate and posted pictures on social media inviting people to help themselves.

Jo Comerie, from Utkinton, has just come to the end of her first year as a flower farmer. Here’s how it went, in her own words…

Later that day I received a text from Karen who lives at the farm informing me they had all gone. Oh no, they’d been stolen. “No”, said Karen “People have left the money in the honesty box”. I couldn’t believe it! People had actually bought my flowers. I was doing it, I was flower farming, I was growing and selling flowers! I began putting bouquets out at the farm gate on a weekly basis as well as fulfilling a number of orders. I haven’t had a wedding this year but hopefully fingers crossed next year maybe. Like any new business starting out, it’s been a tiring journey but well worth it. The initially image I had of skipping around a flower field in a floaty Laura Ashley skirt, barefoot and carrying a wicker basket collecting swathes of flowers is long gone. It’s been a particularly hot summer and so trying to keep the flowers cool once cut has been a challenge as well as keeping them well watered.

I have learnt so much in my first year. Propagating sweet peas in a mouse free zone is a mission I look to accomplish for next year. My first delivery of bulbs will be arriving shortly ready for Mother’s Day next year. I have been researching what I could do for Christmas. I love the idea of a hedgerow Christmas and making up some wreaths and table decorations, all from the flower farm of course. I plan to create a flower meadow for next year too, so my bouquets will include cornflowers, scabious and yarrow. Even though the growing season is slowing for the winter, there is plenty of maintenance work that needs to be done so I can expand the business. I just need to tackle my time keeping and maybe one day I can make dinner without my coat on.

Cath’s exciting plans for Bunbury Singers Bunbury Singers started the new term with a new musical director – Cath Shaw, who has many exciting ideas for future rehearsals and performances. Cath has been conducting choirs for 20 years, and has worked with a variety of groups including community choirs, choral societies, chamber choirs and Cathedral choirs. She also performs as an alto soloist. Sarah Jane Stockman, from the choir, said: “We are thrilled that she has joined us, and we are looking forward to a varied and exciting future. “We are also very fortunate that both Ken and David Fayle are still involved with us as our accompanists, and will continue to bring their valued expertise to our meetings and concerts.” The choir is looking forward to commemorating the centenary of the end of World War One at Tarvin church in the evening on Sunday 11th November; and the Christmas concert is already being planned for Saturday, 15th December at St Boniface church in Bunbury. Bunbury Singers is an adult, mixed community choir, and welcomes anyone who has a love of singing, meeting people and having a good time! What’s on in your village OCTOBER Friday 5th October Tarvin Community Centre is the venue for ‘The Curse of the Mummy and Sherlock Holmes’ and the ‘Blue Carbuncle’ - Double Bill, from 7pm. Curse of the Mummy is a tale from darkest Ancient Egypt. Our hero, Montana Jones, is on a quest for archaeological eminence, but a love-cursed Mummy and a camp Nazi spy threaten to destroy everything! This ancient legend is unwrapped and revitalised with mischievous musical mash-ups and outrageous humour. In Sherlock Holmes and the Blue Carbuncle, the ’carbuncle’ is stolen and there is only one man with the skill, the imagination and the incompetent sidekick to solve this heinous crime: Sherlock Holmes. With food-inspired pop songs, an assortment of characters and slapstick comedy, you’re in for a treat of slick, riotous theatre comedy. Age suitability recommendation 12+ years. Go to www.ticketsource.co.uk/cheshireruraltouringarts or visit Tarvin Post Office for tickets. Mondays in October Beginners Pilates at Cotebrook Village Hall with Claire Darlington 8-9pm. £7 PAYG.
