ITS TIME TO TALK AGAIN!
A
FTER the busy summer holidays, it’s back to work and back to school. I have been contemplating some of the comments in my August editorial, in particular about being part of ‘The Sandwich Generation’ and making plans for the next 12 months. I need to make a plan to ensure my mother is well cared for and she can continue to live as independently as possible in the home that she loves.
So, some basic questions:
• Is her house still practical? Does it need alterations? • Is there accommodation for a live in carer? • How much will a carer cost? What funds are available? • Would it be better to downsize? • Do we need advice? By being this organised I hope to reap the benefit of finding time for me and my younger family, instead of constantly rushing about like a ‘headless chicken’.
Time to stop juggling all the balls at the same time. There is a very informative download on our website www.bunburyagency.com called ‘Time To Talk’. Having just re-read it, I would strongly recommend a browse. It was not written by me but by professional health and financial advisors. There are some very useful check lists about planning for the future and the possibility of needing help in later life. Also on the website are a wide range of facts and figures about funding care in the home. There is a new company based in Tarporley who have recently become members of SOLLA (The Society of Later Life Advisors) which we have been affiliated to for some years now. It is so important to get the right financial advice from a SOLLA member who have been specifically trained to advise upon the unique financial requirements of elderly care.
If you would a confidential discussion or to arrange a house visit please call me on 01829 260280.

and use all the FELLING, PRUNING & space inGRINDING your home STUMP ETC We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER Kill Your Speed
Speeding is still very much an issue in Tarporley with the Parish Council receiving complaints about vehicles speeding in the village on a number of roads including Brook Road and Bowmere Road. These have been reported to the local police who have been carrying out speed checks and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. As such we would ask everyone to drive through Tarporley with care and consideration for others. The Parish Council are working with Cheshire West and Chester Council and Cheshire Police to set up a Community Speed Management Scheme in the village. The Community Speed Watch Scheme is designed to help reduce the amount of speeding that takes place within the village through the use of speed indicator devices and speed guns. The Parish Council are looking for local volunteers to help run the scheme. If you have a couple of hours to spare a month or would like more information about the scheme please contact Abigail at projects@tarporley.org.uk or tel 01829 732 516. Parish Council Cemetery Dog Ban It is with much regret that we have come to the decision to ban dogs from the Parish Council Cemetery in Tarporley. We have received numerous complaints about dogs fouling in the Cemetery on and near graves which families of the deceased have found very distressing. Sadly the Council has also become aware that some dog owners when approached and asked to keep their dogs on leads in the Cemetery have been verbally aggressive towards those who have approached them. We apologise to dog owners who have enjoyed walking dogs on leads in the Cemetery and have not let their dogs foul on graves. However due to the actions of some irresponsible dog owners we have no alternative but to take this action. 12 To advertise call 01244 350398
Cemetery Garden Receives New Look The small garden area in the Parish Council Cemetery has undergone a transformation in recent months and Tarporley Parish Council recently allocated money for this project. Councillors Kennedy and Tavernor designed a planting scheme to compliment the area and Cllr Tavernor undertook the planting of the area which is transformed. Further works are planned in the Cemetery including levelling and other much needed maintenance as well as the purchase of a new notice board. Daffodil Field Development Update The Parish Council was very disappointed to hear this month that the judicial review of the decision to approve development of Daffodil Field planning application has been dismissed. Although disappointed by this decision the decision does not undermine or weaken the Tarporley Neighbourhood Plan which was not ‘made’ at the time of the decision and therefore was not fully in place. Temporary closure of Tarporley Library Don’t forget that Tarporley Library has been closed during the summer holidays due to major building works taking place at the High School. The Library will reopen at 1:30pm on Thursday 8th September. Normal opening hours will resume from this point. Overgrown Hedges Please can we ask everyone who has a hedge on their property boundary to check that the hedge is not over growing any public footpaths, pavements or highways. Both Cheshire West and Chester Council and the Parish Council get a large number of complaints regarding overgrown hedges in Tarporley reducing visibility at junctions or blocking pavements and public rights of way. As such please can you check that your hedges are cut back.

Utkinton & Cotebrook Parish Council
In Utkinton the challenges brought on by the development of Northgate field continue and by the time you get to read this the opportunity to comment may well have come and gone. Let us hope that common sense prevails. We certainly had a lively Extraordinary Parish Meeting with lots of views being aired, particularly over ‘housing need’. Perhaps we need a better way of managing expectations – the loss of the ‘Daffodil Field’ in Tarporley ought to be a warning to us all. Our defibrillator has been installed at Rose Farm Shop – many thanks to John Johnson for allowing it to be located there and donating the labour and to Judith and Matthew Grant for providing it. We are still looking for volunteers to be trained in its use as well as ‘first responders. The discussions over the playground at Utkinton Primary School continue with CWaC seeking to champion our cause with the Diocese. In and around the parish the hedgerows grow and are providing a haven for much wildlife yet they have to be maintained – as do our roads and CWaC do a reasonable job within the constraints of the ‘slings and arrows’ of outrageous funding cuts. If you have a gripe about anything please use the CWaC ‘Smyle’ website (http://smyleforcheshirewest.co.uk/help) where you can report many facets of the things that might make life easier. Talking of website and social media, the Parish ones are doing particularly well with an average of around 50 visitors a day half of whom are regular and the rest new visitors, much the same can be said of our Facebook page where the average article is reaching 50+ people. We still need a Councillor for the Parish Council – please help us to help you keep the two villages as they should be.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Tarporley, Tattenhall, Kelsall, Tarvin &
Bunbury areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

HEALTH & BEAUTY
DOES BIOSLIMMING WORK? By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing
Q. How did you win BioSlimming Salon of the Year Award and does the treatment work? A. When I first heard about BioSlimming I thought “That can’t possibly work!”. it was a friend of mine who lives in, and owns a salon, in Scotland who told me about it. So against my will I agreed to have a demonstration as I have known her for years and trust her judgement. That was around seven years ago and I’ve never looked back! It’s the only figure treatment that I have seen real and lasting results with. The treatment has changed and developed over that time to give even better effects and a course of 6-8 treatments, taken weekly, combined with homecare products are usually necessary. If you want to find out the reasons why we won our Award visit the Blog page of our website www. sensoriabeauty.co.uk Q. Why shouldn’t you spray perfume onto your skin? A.This is because quite a few aromatic substances found in perfumes can react with light, and can cause premature age spots to form on your skin. It is particularly important in the summer to avoid spraying perfume onto any skin that is exposed to the light as the light levels are so much stronger. Perfume also contains alcohol which is drying and damaging to your skin, so always spray it onto your clothes not onto your skin and definitely not on any skin that is exposed to the light. In addition I would avoid any skin care products that contain ‘perfume’ ‘fragrance’ or essential oils such as ginger or citrus. 44 To advertise call 01244 350398

Cloud hangs over the future of Royal British Legion branch As a nation, in July we commemorated the Battle of the Somme, writes Ernest Boynes. The official number of British dead, missing or wounded during that period is 419, 654. Tarporley shared in these losses and their names are read out in St. Helen’s every Remembrance Sunday This was thought to be the War to end all Wars but it wasn’t. Our young men and women have been in action many times since. The Second World War, Korea, the Falklands, Bosnia, Borneo, Iraq, Afghanistan. Even now our troops are engaged in Syria against terrorists who want to change the way we live. The need to care for those returned and returning veterans who find themselves in need is a debt of honour we must recognise. After WW1 such was the public’s distress at the circumstances of those returning from the front that a group of concerned people formed the British Legion to help and assist these casualties of War. Branches of the British Legion were established in towns and villages all over the country where ex-servicemen, now known as veterans, and the local residents worked together to alleviate the distress of those in need. Sometime in the 1920s the villagers of Tarporley founded the Tarporley Branch of the British Legion in order collectively to provide
help for those families and the wounded who were suffering as a result of the loss of a breadwinner or disability. This collective effort continued after the Second world war. Gradually as a result of the passage of time and the change in the nature of the village from a small closeknit community, where everyone knew everyone else, to much looser relationships, the importance of the British Legion locally slowly declined. The number of active members fell and age wearied those who were left until now the Branch is reduced to a committee of five elderly veterans in poor health and with no active members. According to records held at the RBL Headquarters there are some thirty local Members who pay their subscription by direct debit but who take no part in Branch matters. These members are urgently requested to contact the Branch Secretary Ernie Bitcher on 01829 732704 and offer to assist in keeping the Branch a functioning part of the Charity. The Branch also pleads with other members of the community to join the RBL and assist with fund raising. Without the help of the community the Tarporley Branch will close, which could signal the end of the Remembrance Parade and the presenting of the Standards at the Remembrance Sunday Service, should that Service continue. So please, remember those who have given their lives, their families who may be in distress, those with life changing wounds who need care now and, much more significantly, when they get old. AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
GLORIOUS WARM AUTUMN COLOURS
C
M
Y
In early autumn the colours change from pastels to hot colours and if you plan your garden scheme you can have a concentrated area filled with autumn colour. Autumn flowering shrubs that are reliable and flowers for weeks are the varieties of Hibiscus syriacus. These shrubs will grow on most soil provided they retain moisture. They take a year or two to start to grow and also come into leaf later in spring than most shrubs. However, the show from the large flowers ranging from white with pink centres, to dark pink, blue and pure white is well worth it and once settled in, they can get to 2m tall. For drier soil, how about Abelia Frances Mason. This likes a slightly sheltered position if it is to keep some foliage in winter. The leaves are green and yellow with fragrant white flowers in autumn. One photo is of Abbeywood gardens near Delamere with its prairie planting of grasses such as the tall golden Stipa gigantea and swathes of perennials in wide open spaces. They look stunning at this time of year. One of the plants featured are Sedum spectabile with flat heads of pink flowers
CM
loved by bees. In theory they like a well drained soil and their fleshy leaves do well in drier conditions but they also grow in damper soils. Plant next to Rudbekia fulgida Goldsturm with its yellow flowers for a striking colour combination. Work to do in the garden includes starting to plant daffodils and crocuses for spring. Divide summer flowering perennials and replant them, watering in well to rejuvenate them for next season. Water and harvest runner beans and tomatoes regularly to extend the season. Tomatoes take time to ripen so don’t give up if they stay green, leave them on the plant to ripen. If you have grown pumpkins and squashes, remove leaves so that they ripen. If you would like to visit gardens for ideas, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. You can visit Abbeywood Gardens Delamere ifrom Sunday to Thursday. Mount Pleasant gardens near Kelsall are open on 3rd and 4th September with their Sculpture Exhibition so do go and see the many different themed borders, ponds, stumpery and ferns.

Tarporley Talk September 2016 65
Season ends on a high for A strong Tarporley Karting Team (TKT) took part in the National Schools Karting Association (Natska) Sprint Finals in July at the Clay Pigeon Race Circuit in Dorset. This was the final race meeting of the 2015/16 season where the overall season championship positions are confirmed It’s also, sadly, a time to say goodbye to some of the older competitors who retire from Schools Karting as they reach their 18th birthdays! In Class 14, which is for Karts with either Raket or Restricted
TKM engines, TKT fielded four of the 11 competitors in the field. Huge congratulations go to Sam Bailey-Saltmarsh who not only won the weekend event but also the season Championship, it was also ‘well-done’ to Katie Pritchard who finished 2nd with some highly accomplished drives over the two days. Kian Ray was 5th just missing out on a trophy by the narrowest of margins and Jon Daniels finished 7th after some frustrating heats where things didn’t go his way. TKT fielded three of the six drivers in Class 1 (Cadet), this

is the most junior class which is for competitors as young as eight years old. After some competitive racing it was TKT’s Harvey Cole who came out on top, winning the weekend event, with club-mates Ewan Sime in 4th and Daniel Kenny 6th. In Class 7 (Junior TKM) TKT fielded almost half of the total field, here is how they got on. For the second year running, and in his final Natska race, it was 1st place to TKT’s James Mills, who also picked up the season Championship, again for the second year on the bounce.

or Tarporley Karters Whilst Kurt Roberts took 2nd place for the second successive season it was 3rd place for Theo Hesketh, 5th was Amy Duke, with Harry Jones 6th, Lee Whittingham 8th, Robbie White 9th and Reece Griffiths 12th. In his final Natska race Reece picked up the 158kg Class 7 trophy, so from everyone at TKT well done Reece and best of luck in the future. In Class 15 (Rotax) TKT fielded 4 of the 14 competitors, and it was well done to TKT’s Connor Bailey in his final Natska race, finishing a creditable 4th, not
far behind were team-mates Tommy Taylor in 7th, Fraser Sime 8th and Jake BaileySaltmarsh 10th. Finally, three TKT novice drivers attended their first Nationals event at Clay Pigeon, all performed well with Jake Bastable impressing the oncourse marshals such that he picked up the Class 1 Cadet Novice Trophy. Congratulations also go to Dom Roberts and James Goodchild who took part in the Class 11 novice heats. The Tarporley Karting Team is mostly funded by monies raised
by the parents and children through car boot sales, quizzes and other similar activities. We are also grateful for the annual donation from the Tarporley Round Table and the Tarporley & District 41 Club, this money will be put to good use repairing karts and buying spares. For more information about the club, including those interested in joining or anyone who feels that they could make a donation to keep the club going, please contact Howard Malyon on 07887 626 320.

HEALTH AND FITNESS BLOG
WHICH EXERCISE CLASS IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
Zumba, Zumba Toning, Body blast, Circuits, Dance fit the list goes on with so many different classes to choose from its important you pick the right class for you and what you’re trying to achieve.
So for improvement in muscle tone classes such as body pump, legs bums and tums, core, ab blast are always a safe option. They tend to use weights or body weight to help tone and sculpt your problem areas. These classes are good but more beneficial if you mix with some cardio as everyone has a 6 pack but if it’s under a layer of fat it can’t be seen! Cardio classes, these classes aim to improve your general fitness. By pumping the blood around the body, and placing stress on the cardiorespiratory system. They can help prevent high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, obesity, stress, and some types of cancers. So incorporating some form of this within your chosen fitness plan is a no brain brainer. Classes that incorporate this are Boogie Bounce Extreme (the new fitness craze of trampoline!) running clubs, spinning, aerobics, Zumba and other dance like classes. Low impact classes have their benefits as well as disadvantages but have probably been recommended to you after an injury, physio or ongoing joint problems. The benefits of these classes are they stop extra wear and tear on your joints whilst providing a safe and easier environment for you to work in, preventing you from aggravating injuries further. The disadvantages of these classes are you often have to work twice as long to obtain some of the benefits of a higher intensity class. Meaning if weight loss is your goal, you will need to set aside longer and more regular work outs to get results. Often these classes take a lot longer to increase muscle mass too. We know that less muscle means poorer posture, it lowers your
metabolism, weak or no muscle leads to more injuries, feeling more fatigued and response times can be affected. Relaxation or stretching classes ie; yoga, pilates, stretch and tone, Bikram yoga. These are perfect at the end of a stressful week! These classes aim to decrease stress, increase flexibility, increase muscle tone improve posture. The disadvantages of these classes are there is limited cardio improvements and although you may tone, building muscle without lifting weights is a long process. Opt for this based a more of a relaxation basis. So whichever class you choose ensure that it suits your goal. Choosing the gym yourself is another option, but beware of not pushing yourself enough, choosing only the machines you enjoy and not performing the exercises correctly. Getting a few sessions with a personal trainer is always a good way to check your form and make sure you ‘re doing the most effective work out in the shortest amount of time. Contact me for class enquiries or to discuss what classes might suit you and what you want to achieve. THIS month the widely anticipated drop in interest rates came to fruition when the Bank of England voted to reduce the base rate to 025%. If we are perfectly honest, as savers, even a further drop probably isn’t going to make much difference, after all half of virtually nothing is still virtually nothing! The further drop could mean better a mortgage deal for someone trying to get on the housing ladder, or for people with mortgages, it could mean that a better rate could be negotiated with your lender. What though, if you need your capital to generate income to supplement your retirement provision? In an uncertain world, investment income is hard to find and those looking for it have faced an increasing challenge ever since the financial crisis broke in 2008. History shows us that investing in equities, or shares, has provided investors with a better chance of outpacing inflation and interest rates over the longer term, particularly if the shares are able to increase the dividend payments each year. It’s worth remembering that not all equity income funds i.e. funds which distribute dividends as an income, are the same. Some provide better prospects for total return through the reinvestment of dividends, whilst some are better at providing much needed regular income distributions. Corporate bond funds which are, by their nature, income producers remain popular with more cautious investors delivering a “fixed income” or coupon payment. I’ve always advocated a well diversified investment portfolio and this is equally true with a fixed interest strategy. Exposure to investment grade, sub-investment grade and senior secured debt will help position a portfolio to benefit from growth across the credit spectrum.
Commercial property felt the full affects of the credit crunch and funds investing in this area have been in the headlines again recently as some providers close their funds temporarily to new inputs and withdrawals. The long term track record of the asset class is however strong, and importantly it offers returns that are not similarly correlated to other asset classes, or to put it in plain English, will not react in the same way at the same time as other asset classes will. Of course, it’s important to remember that investing in any of the asset classes I’ve mentioned does not provide the security of capital which is characteristic of a deposit account with a bank or building society. The value of capital and income can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the original amount invested. Anyone considering an investment portfolio to generate income or capital growth would be well served to take professional advice from a qualified adviser, something regular readers will know I always advocate. A well diversified professionally managed portfolio of funds which blends a range of asset classes remains the most suitable strategy for investors to satisfy their longer term income needs. If you would like further information about investing for income or indeed longer term capital growth, do please give us a call, without obligation on 01948 840738 or 075959 28907. We look forward to hearing from you.

‘Developing confident children through creativity and choice within a Christian Community’
OPEN MORNING Huxley CE Primary School would like to invite you to their
on Friday, 23rd September, 9.30 - 12noon. (No appointment necessary.) Come and experience our: • Small classes • High adult/pupil ratio • Personalised, creative curriculum centred on the needs of children as individuals • Staff who are passionate about all children achieving their full potential • Children who love coming to school
Huxley CE Primary School, Church Lane, Huxley, Chester CH3 9BH Tel: 01829 781296 E-mail: head@huxleyprimary.cheshire.sch.uk
Why Huxley or Utkinton? As Headteacher of Huxley and Utkinton St. Paul’s C.E. Primary Schools I am very proud of our schools and the achievements of all our children. Huxley and Utkinton are small schools, in rural Cheshire, aiming to enable children of all abilities from age 4+ to 11 to achieve their full individual potential in a caring, Christian environment. Huxley and Utkinton are often described as a family, something of which we are very proud. We have an open-door policy and parents are actively encouraged to come in and talk to staff before or after school. Parents and staff work in close partnership to ensure the best for their children. New families often comment that they and their children have never before been made to feel so welcome and included. At both schools the children benefit from small class sizes: each year our Reception intake is seven at Huxley and ten at Utkinton. The school is organised in four classes, each of which has at least one full-time Teaching Assistant. This high teacher/pupil ratio means that children receive a great deal of individual attention and a highly personalised education in addition to greater opportunities in wider curricular experiences such as school productions, celebration church services and sport. We aim to develop all children to their full potential and to encourage individuality and creativity at the same time as providing the children with an exciting curriculum in line with the requirements of the National Curriculum. We pride ourselves on being an inclusive school which provides an education suited to every individual. Our highly inclusive practice is recognised locally and has been celebrated externally, both through OFSTED reports and in our church inspection. We aim to provide creative, cross-curricular, theme-based learning, linked to memorable experiences both in and out of the classroom, in a nurturing, family-friendly environment. At the heart of our philosophy is active learning both on and beyond the school site. All children participate in one trip a term linked to their topic for the term and all our children have the opportunity to take part in a residential visit every year. We hope to inspire the children with our individualised, child-centred curriculum and we are confident that all our children love coming to school. The school provides transport to and from school in the school mini-bus for which there is a small daily charge. The bus is also used for many sports fixtures and school outings, providing a useful facility for a country school. We would love you to visit us and see for yourself some of the exciting learning opportunities on offer, the enthusiasm of the children and the commitment of the staff. Please phone the School Office – Telephone 01829 781296 (Huxley) 01829 732322 (Utkinton) – to arrange a visit. Lorna Pleavin (Headteacher)
The Grange School:
Opportunities are many and varied Opportunity is being part of a rowing team as half a million spectators roar you on; it is starring in high quality dramatic productions; it is helping to improve access to education for thousands of children in the Gambia; it is surviving in wild country as part of the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme (for which The Grange is a regional centre). The opportunities we provide are many and varied. Opportunity also means ensuring that, when our students leave us, they do so with the public exam results to take them where they want to go. Over 90% A*-B at A-level and 84% A*-A at GCSE are statistics that speak for themselves. Indeed a recent national survey placed us as the top ranked co-educational independent school in the North West. However, what makes us even more proud is that our pupils are not all effortlessly academic, meaning that the added value hidden in their performance is really important. This year, on average, Grange pupils achieved over a half a grade better at GCSE and A-level than sophisticated benchmarking data would suggest likely. Of course, a successful education cannot be measured purely by the flourishing of the recipient, but also by the effect of that person on others as they move through life. At The Grange we provide the opportunity for young people to become the best of all their possible selves.
