cover trail International Nurses Day (IND) is an international day observed around the world on 12 May (the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth) of each year, to mark the contributions that nurses make to society. Lets Hear more from Jyoti Pal who had been a health care worker and now is a facilitator with TSSDC Pune. “Healthcare workers (HCWs) are amongst the high-risk group to acquire this infection. The COVID-19 pandemic has reminded all of us of the vital role health workers play to relieve suffering and save lives. COVID19 has exposed health workers and their families to unprecedented levels of risk. The theme for year 2021 is “Nurses: A Voice to Lead - A vision for future healthcare” The day is focused on the role of nurse as a professional, in bringing out the transformation in future healthcare. Facts: • The global nursing workforce is estimated at 27.8 million. • The number of deaths due to Covid-19 is 2,710 (as on 31 Jan 2021 in 59 countries) among nurses. • It is estimated that shortfall of nurses can be up to 13 million by 2030. The safety of health care workers during this pandemic is crucial for communities to overcome the disease. We should support and strengthen them. Strengthening nursing will also have the additional benefits of promoting gender equity, contributing to economic development and supporting other Sustainable Development Goals. We should appreciate their work and thank them for what they do to keep us healthy. I was working with Max Hospital, New Delhi in the ICU Ward during that phase. Of course, being a human being first, I was extremely worried about myself and my family's health as there is a high risk of being infected with this virus as I am a health care worker. But, by taking proper measures to keep ourselves safe and take care of patients and our family, I stepped forward and removed the fear from my heart and performed my duties with full zest and zeal and at the same time kept my family also safe from this pandemic. All thanks to my mentors and my seniors and my colleagues who guided and motivated me well to perform my duties and to fight as a warrior and save the lives of other people. Now, I am very proud of myself and thanks to God who gave me a chance to serve mankind.

my skill story By: Amrita Fernandez
Since historic times, humans have realized the importance of fitness to pursue a healthy life. They have tried various ways, including using herbs, nutritional supplements, medicines, or re organizing lifestyles. However, doing physical exercise has consistently topped the list. Fitness helps us function efficiently and effectively in both work and leisure activities. You can improve your fitness through running, swimming, gym, yoga or any sports. For me, it is running as it clears my mind, and a clear mind leads to creativity. Recall any social gatherings, and you would notice little kids enjoying themselves just running around without any specific goal. Didn’t we all also enjoy this aimless running around during our childhood? Unfortunately, many of us have abandoned this simple and enjoyable activity as we grew up. They say a ‘running bug’ bites you; it’s funny. I can’t remember the actual moment when I fell in love with running… it just sorts of happened. For most of my life, I loved playing outdoor sports, probably ever since I could tie my shoes. However, these anaerobic activities require utmost mind and body coordination which fades as we age. Naturally, I was looking for an activity to channel my inner energy. I am not a gym-going person. And the nearest I came doing yoga was while commuting in Mumbai Locals— the crowd subtly trains you to hold breath, balance core, perform iconic poses, or utilize bodyweight. So when a close friend cum office colleague asked me whether I would like to participate in a half marathon, I immediately nodded yes. A grave mistake, at least that’s what I felt at the time. See the pale smile in the photo (bib 1275, my first half marathon)? It is because I could hear every muscle shelling the choicest of swearing words at me midway through the run. But man, I was determined to crawl to the finishing line if required. Since then, I admit running has taught me many life lessons– the importance of goals, discipline, teamwork, commitment and much more. In my skill story, I have tried to pen a few of them down. I am just a running enthusiast who is curious and learning. So this article primarily reflects what I experienced, read, heard from veteran runners or coaches. I hope you will enjoy it, so let’s get started (or should I say - on your mark, get, set, go).

Youth Employability: Making a Difference Through Coaching The development of inner self is required, but it is interesting to note that if, while learning tennis, you begin to learn how to focus your attention and how to trust in yourself, you have learned something far more valuable than how to hit a forceful backhand. The backhand can be used to advantage only on a tennis court, but the skill of mastering the art of effortless concentration is invaluable in whatever you set your mind to. - W Timothy Gallaway Gallaway quoted the above in his bestselling book The Inner Game of Tennis and this book has become an inspiration to build the concept of coaching. As stated, it is critical to consider what you gained for the future or for the rest of your life as a result of what you learned or the solutions you discovered for current problems. Aligning to this thought, coaching is an enabling process to help individuals with an environment to identify own potential and a way forward to maximize this optimally. The confidence and the trust an individual builds from this also becomes an outcome for future course of action. Let’s have some thoughts on Youth Employability and how coaching as an intervention would benefit in this. Experts talk number of issues around Youth Employability starts from lacking skills, lack of skills in handling pressure, job retention etc.
Joseph Thomas Operation Specialist Facilitator Development
Evidence states that lack of opportunity provided to experience the real working world is the core concern and recommends steps to incorporate interventions supporting youth in experiencing the same. When we address Youth Employability with the catalyst termed Coaching, there are three major areas in which the outcomes make a hit. Self-Reflection: Coaching enables an opportunity for a coachee to spend some time in his own aspirations and bring clarity to it. When this is being offered to youth, they get an opportunity to sit and think about where they stand now and where they want to be, brings a clarity in their way forward. Subsequently, this will allow the individual to realize and identify the smaller steps he/she has to make to reach each stage.
Maximizing Potentials: While having a coaching conversation, a coachee will get opportunities to think and act on what really stands as an Interference to achieve a goal or use the person’s maximum potential. When the youth get an opportunity to be coached, they will get answers to following questions: Is this the only way out? What are the obstacles I perceive in the way to achieve my goals? What are the options for overcoming these obstacles? Have I used my full potential? Answers to all these questions will help the person to bring out the Real Self. Goal Oriented Approach: Basic principle of coaching is to have a conversation around a goal or aspiration and brings out action plans to achieve this goal as an outcome of the conversation. When a person gets an opportunity to work on smaller goals, it actually becomes a prospect to work towards smaller/ bigger targets in a specific time frame. After working on these goals, it becomes a practice for them to work and adapt with their targets in future and the fear around targets will gradually fade away.
Though we see all these outcomes, coaching has been offered as a premium service to top management and senior level employees ranging from CEO’s/ COO’s to Senior VP’s. That means, an individual gets an opportunity to be coached only once they reach the levels discussed above. However, in order to achieve the above mentioned results for youth employability, it is necessary to offer this service to youth as well. Tata STRIVE have made efforts to democratize coaching by bringing Coaching from Boardroom to Classroom through which young learners are benefitted. These efforts have answered the question, Why can’t we extend coaching support to our young learners in classroom itself to help them in their journey towards senior roles in in different organizations?
And we can confidently say that there are so many future CEO’s and entrepreneurs sitting in our classrooms and coaching is making a difference in their journey.

my story “Hardships & challenges always teach you something. I came stronger with the days & happy to have Tata STRIVE in my journey”. Sonali Kamble hails from Andheri east (Mumbai) and has completed her 10th standard from Swami Samarth High School. Currently pursuing 12th from Hiraman Bankar High School.
Sonali Kamble Age (In Years): 31 Tata STRIVE Course: General Duty Assistant Batch Name: Blended GDA_0002 Company Name: Chintamani Hospital, Pune Designation: Care Giver
There are total three sisters and one brother in her family. In her own words, “As we all know that life is full of challenges. Similarly, my life has always been the same until I joined GDA Blended Learning Course from Tata STRIVE. Mine is a very big family and this directly or indirectly was the reason of my sufferings. I wanted to do study until 12th class but I couldn't go beyond 10th just because of poverty. The most remarkable thing which poverty made me to learn was to SHARE THINGS AND TO HELP OTHERS. This is the main reason that I always wanted to be a nurse. I got married in my early life only. But, my in-laws family were also from poor background and the same story cycle of my life started repeating here as well. But, this time I decided to not to be silent or keep calm and let the life to hit me harder and harder. “So, when I came to know about Tata STRIVE free of cost courses, then, I decided to avail this opportunity and attended this course. I completed the course and I got successfully placed”. Sonali shared an incident that on the very first day on job, her senior asked few questions in the team meeting, other team members were unable to answer those questions. But she confidently answered those questions based on the knowledge she gained during training in TATA STRIVE. Her senior appreciated her about her understanding and knowledge about the domain. She misses Tata STRIVE and her facilitators. According to her, Tata STRIVE turned around her life. Her family and she is happy from the support she received from Tata STRIVE which paved a path to her bright career.
did you know? • The nurse cap is patterned after a nun’s habit to keep the hair neatly in place. Although this clothing item has long been phased out as it is known to carry pathogens, some countries still use this as part of the female nurses’ outfit. • The top occupational health concern of nurses is back injury. A survey done in 2011 shows that 59% of nurses are afraid they might have this. • The first Nursing school was established in India in 250 BC.
