MILWAUKEE Blacksmith: Kent Knapp Colnik had come from Austria to the Columbian Exposition in Chicago. After winning awards for several pieces, including his famous “Masterpiece” he found his way to Milwaukee, where a string of commissions would convince him to stay. He made his life and home here and his work is still standing all over the city. Milwaukee’s Villa Terrace Museum is dedicated to Cyril’s work, founded on the collection of his daughter Gretchen who left the pieces for this purpose upon her passing.
Kent Knapp and his wife Shannon Kent Knapp has been studying blacksmithing since he was 19 years old. After working with a master blacksmith for a few years in Milwaukee, he lost touch with his art when his took his wife and 2 kids to New Orleans. After 10 years there, he returned to Milwaukee with his wife and 4 children and picked it up again. Stepping right back into beat with the man who had originally taught him, Knapp realized this art was going to be very important to him. When told his teacher would be selling his tools and leaving Milwaukee, the time was right for his own shop. A huge part of the draw to this art form for this family is Kent’s love for Milwaukee architecture and her rich history with iron. In 1893 Milwaukee was growing. The beer business was booming and the families that led that industry wanted large ornate houses covered in the ironwork of Cyril Colnik. 4 | Tattooed Art & Culture
Kent’s passion for Milwaukee’s history and connection to it’s beautiful ironwork is infectious and can already see that love in his son’s eyes when they repeat what they have heard about any given house. The family’s goal is to revive this almost lost art form and to pass down the old school techniques combined with just a few modern conveniences, incorporated for safety. Knapp has already answered the call to replicate Colnik’s work and produce new pieces to match existing on some of Milwaukee’s finest homes. Kent and Shannon run the shop with a great deal of teamwork, covering all the details of the running an office and the producing functional art of this magnitude. The children are often called on for tasks, each in their area of strength. Zoey and Miles, the teenagers, often help with office work or heavy lifting. The younger boys, Birdie and Oscar have been in the shop for years already and participated with dad at the Grohmann Museum Lost Arts Festival, where they demonstrated techniques for reclaiming used metal and turning into beautiful hooks, candle holders, bottle openers, etc. Oscar has already sold some of his pieces, his flair for the industrial look along with the lessons of his father, producing work that has caught the interest of others. EDITOR’S NOTE WELCOME! Welcome to the first issue of Tattooed Art & Culture. This was a long journey of well over three years of planning and execution, and now that we have launched, we are changing things again, and again. “So why does the world need another tattoo magazine? There are so many out there.” “… yes, but there is nothing like this that you have ever seen before. We have been setting the standards in every magazine arena that we launch, from luxury lifestyles, to security, and PC computing. … besides, we own it and we can do what we want without the approval of a few cynics out there.” From the Publisher, Ever since I was a teenager I had wanted a tattoo, but back then the law was that a person had to be 18, and my parents would never allow it. So after I turned 18, I joined the Marine Corps. After boot camp, when everyone was told not to go get a tattoo, and half the platoon went to get a “Devil Dog” on their body, I ventured to New Orleans for Mardi gras. Lo and behold, 19 hours later I ended up with my first tattoo as well. It wasn’t a Devil Dog, however. Since then this tattoo has been added to, and has grown into what I call a piece of art on my back. We have been publishing magazines since 1999, and it was about time we started publishing a magazine that we are very passionate about: the world of tattoos and tattooing. So I hope you all enjoy reading our publication, looking at our pictorials, and appreciate the world that we intend to capture. Our year ahead will be focusing on interviews, stories, products, shops, and artists that no one has heard of yet. There are so many talented tattooists in the world who have been unrecognized that should be seen. Not to mention that we will have an online directory for each and every shop in the world one day where readers can find everything they need to know about that tattoo “parlor.” We noticed that every other magazine out there seems to lack such a directory; well, that’s their fault. We have no problem being the first place you go before you get your next tattoo or piercing, just to make sure that artist is the right fit for you. From tattooing to piercing, we have you covered. We will be printing our publication starting in March of this year and will be mailing it to more than 25,000 shops across the United States. If for any reason you would like to reach out to us to submit your work or refer someone else’s work, please do. I’m always available to each and every reader. Feel free to email me directly anytime at: joliver@sandbornmedia.com Regards, John Oliver

RACHELLE HOFFMAN Occupation: Piercer / Shop owner Location: Phoenix, Arizona Age: Young & spry TAC: What’s your favorite style of tattoo? Hoffman: “My favorite tattoo style would be realism; I have it all over me, and plan to cover my entire body in that style as well.” TAC: How many piercings do you have? Hoffman: “Currently I have about 60 piercings.” TAC: If you could be anywhere in the world right now where would you be? Hoffman: “If I could be anywhere in the world right now I would love to be in Disneyworld. It is one of my favorite places ever.” TAC: Most memorable moment? Hoffman: “My most memorable moment would probably have to be when my son was born.” TAC: If you could meet anyone dead or alive who would that person be? GEAR AND STUFF Gnarboards Trail Rider 4 Wheel Drive Electric Skateboard
The Gnarboards Trail Rider is a 64-pound 4WD electric skateboard that measures 47 x 16.5 x 10.5 inches and weighs 86 pounds. It probably qualifies more as a recreational transporter than an X-Games prop, especially with four electric motors that produce 850 watts of output each powering the rider to a 0 to 28 mph acceleration time of 1.9 seconds. Onboard battery allows it to run for up to 16 miles on a single charge.
Corbus Skateboards
Think skateboards can do better than just come in the same familiar deck shapes? So does Corbus Skateboards, who specialize in crafting unusually-shaped aluminum boards that offer similar weight and rideability as their more conventional counterparts.
for-speed baby stroller. Clad like a tuned-out 50s muscle car, the unusually ornate baby buggy looks more at home in the parking lot of a hot rod convention than the neighborhood park. Unlike those fuel-injected, V8 engine numbers, though, it’s all for show. At least, I hope. Otherwise, say hello to Child Services, my friend.
The Roddler comes with all the trimmings that you can only ever find splattered across the bodies of classic gas guzzlers - fin-shaped fenders, white wall tires, chrome wheels, wheel bullets, ultra-suede seat inserts and a car-like chassis. Since it’s actually a stroller, it also has baby-friendly fare, including a comfy seat (carbon vinyl leatherette), a protective top (carbon vinyl leatherette, too) and chrome grips for whoever’s strolling the kid around. Heck, the thing looks more pimped-out than any car I’ve owned, especially for something that will likely be used for only a year or so. According to Kid Kustoms though, you can order a $500 kit thatconverts the pushchair into a trike, allowing you to attach it to your future barnburner’s bicycle when he’s ready to hit the streets. That way, he can begin giving rides to all the cute little girls around the neighborhood. Available in various designs and colors, The Roddler is currently available for $1,999.
Customized skateboards usually meant sticking some unique graphic on the thing. These new boards, on the other hard, extend the design to the body itself, relegating all that admittedly cool skateboard art into the back of the pack when it comes to looking more awesome.
The Roddler: A Hot Rod Stroller

Like the first two installments of these special edition kicks, the shoes feature the model’s timeless design, paired with tattoo graphics printed on the insides and soles. Not only are these limited editions, these are also the last of the Ink on Suede series, making it a mustscore for sneakerheads of all shapes and sizes. Three designs come with the new series, with each shoe sporting tattoo graphics from either Davide di Stefano, Rino Valente or Heinz. Stefano’s goofy cartoon design comes with a black upper, Valente’s traditional fire and skull on gray, and Heinz’s Americana eagle on a cream colorway.

The special finishes of the oversized 51-30 Chrono, the subdued Sentry, the triple-movement Banks, and the sporty Player are designed to wear increasingly as you wear them, giving each an appearance that’s as unique as it is rugged — unfortunately, we can’t wear the badass 51-30 pictured above, as it makes our twig-like wrists look even tinier.

AUTO REVIEW
Touch of Class
Hyundai is making a powerful statement with the well-appointed Equus luxury sedan By Charles Hudson The Hyundai Equus was one of the first luxury vehicles we reviewed in 2013, and with a few mild exterior and interior touch-ups, as well as even more standard tech and safety features, we love it even more in 2014. With the Equus, you’re getting incredible bang for the buck in the premium performance category, inching ever closer to the BMW 7-series, Lexus LS, Audi A8 and Mercedes-Benz S-class.
2013 version, Hyundai refined the dashboard, center stack and steering wheel with sharper detailing. The seven-inch TFT gauge-cluster display is big and bold. The infotainment system with premium navigation system is displayed on a bright 9.2 inch screen, and navigated by an intuitive clicky console knob. It’s highlighted by a thumping 598-watt, 17-speaker, Lexicon 7.1 Discrete surround sound audio system. A tri-zone (front-left, front-right, and rear) climate control system keeps every passenger comfortable. Another shot of class comes courtesy of the heated leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather-booted shift lever.
Hyundai makes shopping for the Equus a snap: there are two trim levels: Signature and Ultimate. We test drove the Signature, which is impressively well-equipped: owners will enjoy 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels with staggered-width performance tires, opulent leather seating, wood trim interior, lane departure warning system, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty, pre-collision warning system, nine air bags, smart cruise control with automatic braking, multi-view camera system that provides a 360-degree view around the entire vehicle, and many other bells and whistles. Under the hood: Equus’ dual-overhead-cam 5-liter V8 engine is a 429-horsepower beast, providing plenty of muscle and get-up-and-go for merging and passing maneuvers. The V-8 engine is cutting edge: Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI), dual continuously variable valve timing, and tuned variable induction. Its eight-speed automatic transmission and rear wheel drive delivered lively acceleration, sprinting from 0 to 60 mph in 6 seconds. Fuel economy numbers are somewhat disappointing — an estimated 15 city and 23 highway — about the only negative we can say about this vehicle. The Equus offers three air suspension modes — Normal, Sport and Snow — though this car is at its best as a highway cruiser. On the inside: The Equus’ cabin is where the vehicle really stands out. With plush leather, French stitching and other high-quality touches, the interior of the Equus is something special. From the 24 | Tattooed Art & Culture

MUSIC COMING NEXT MONTH
One on One with Recording Artist
Trisha Lurie
Hailing from Santa Monica, CA, Trisha Lurie is many things. Artist, activist, musician… she follows no one, and forges her own path. She is outspoken, passionate, and unabash-

edly herself and there’s one thing above all Trisha loves to do- make great rock music. Trisha has just finished recording her debut album, “Romancing Neptune”. Engineered and mixed by the legendary Bob Clearmountain (The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, The Pretenders, David Bowie), and produced by Peter Thorn (Chris Cornell, Courtney Love). “Romancing Neptune” is from start to finish a dynamic, electrifying rock powerhouse. Thanks to Clearmountain’s contributions, the sonics are undeniably incredible. The tracks on “Romancing Neptune” range from the haunting and introspective “Beast”, to the raging “Rampage”, to the full-bore scathing reprimand “Deadbeat”, to the anthemic ode to living life in overdrive, “Smell, Touch, Taste”. “Chinese Love Trap” seethes with lust, “Eulogy” soars, and “Rich Boy” just burns… “Romancing Neptune” is at once stylistically modern, but with a healthy dash of kick ass old school Rock And Roll energy!

The Story: John Schlick is an inventor-type that needed to bring one of his product ideas to market and this was at the top of the list. After multiple design patents and partnering with Greg, it is a fantastic reality. There are other cool bicycles out there, but none that perform as well as this one.

FITNESS
Beach Body:
Get Ready for Spring with 5 Simple Exercises
1
By Samuel Colby AS AN EXERCISE AND POST-REHAB SPECIALIST, I am always asked: “What can I do to get into great shape quickly for pool season? Like anything and everything, it takes time, hard work and dedication. The human body is made up of opposing forces (for every push there is a pull); therefore, I recommend you train on a regular basis. I picked five things that an average Joe can do to get ready for summer.
2
1. Pushups strengthens and tones chest, shoulders and triceps 2. Pull-ups strengthens and tones back and biceps
3
3. Abdominal pikes strengthens and firms the abdominals 4. Low back hyperextensions strengthens and tones the low back region
4
5. Alternating lunges with weights tones and strengthens the entire lower body In addition to doing these five simple exercises, drink plenty of water (half your body weight in ounces). I also recommend doing at least 20 minutes of cardio, keeping your heart rate in the fat-burning zone: 220 minus (age x 0.70). And as always, eat plenty of veggies and lean meats, keeping your calories within your ideal metabolic range (your weight x 12). For more information, Samuel Colby at www.exercisesos.com.
